New Reel I'm building!! Check out!! 2025

fishing user avatarcart7t reply :

I'm making my own reel. Nothing else to do today, too cold and windy to work on the boat redo.

Here are the Specs.

Type 10 body frame.

Titanium deposition coating.

All aluminum frame and sideplates.

Dual braking, Internally adjustable 6 pin centrifugal and externally adjustable mag braking.

This can come in a wide or narrow spool version.

Reel total Weight: Roughly 8oz. narrow spool. 8.4 wide spool.

24lbs drag

6.4:1 gear ratio, optional 7.1:1 or even 5.4:1.

10 bearing drive system with 1 rollerbearing.

Click type spool tension adjustment

First, I started with 2 reels made by completely different manufacturers and stripped them down.

patrevo1.jpg

patrevo2.jpg

Then I added the main shaft, main/pinion gear along with the complete drag stack from one reel onto the other.

patrevo3.jpg

I then reassemble the crankside plate back on adding the rest of parts with the higher drag count onto the other reel including the star drag knob. I wish I had that other manufacturers higher end reel that had the click type star drag. That would really make this whole thing sweet.

Wah lah

The Garlueger Patrevo

Works like butter I tells ya. :)

fishing user avatarMicro reply :

It's a beast of a reel.  I take it you built a lesser reel with the other left-over stuff?  Sort of like that movie "Twins" with Schwarzenegger and DeVito."  "All the goodness went into you, and all the left over crap when into him."

fishing user avatarmemo43 reply :

WOW, I understood nothing, saw nothing, heard nothing, wont tell anyone nothing...

Wish  I had your skills or your time. My babin fever lately has consisted of honey do's. you know those things we all chose to do later. well it usually is cold later.

Nice job on the reel.

I epecially like the name "Garluger"

fishing user avatarcart7t reply :

I only wish I still had one of my old STX's reels. I like the handle/nut cover of the STX much better than the S reel and the S star drag doesn't have the clicker adjustment.

Not sure how the Patriarch main shaft/gear/star drag knob/handle will work on the Revo S. I do know the spool tension knobs are not interchangeable due to the finer threading on the Patriarch vs the S.

BTW, I'm replacing a washer on the main shaft between the star drag clicker assembly and the top of the roller bearing shaft. The Revo washer is double thick and isn't allowing me to back off the drag all the way off. I wish I had a way to test the drag poundage, I'm pulling hard on this line and the spool just doesn't move. I may be exceeding 24 lbs!! :)

Got a fish scale?

BTW, a chrome nut and nut brace off and older ambasseduer would look good, better than the grey plastic nut cap off the Revo S.

Or an Abu Shimawa.

Or a PEacemaker aka a PFLUMANO!

You can fit a daiwia handle on there swept one at that but i dont think the star drag will fit u will need that from the daiwia also .Cart you got me thinking now (see the smoke yall) i have a bunch of parts and frames around here and new micro tools and a drill press and its 34 deg outside hmmmmm

I did this in order to see if I can create a 5.4:1 cranking reel out of a Patriarch since they don't offer one. Garcia has had 5.4:1 gear kits for the Revo's, I could probably order the Revo Winch main & pinion gear as well.

If you're interested in creating a 5.4:1 ratio Patriarch for cranking,  the Revo gears will work!

fishing user avatarMicro reply :

Order the Winch's handle and nutcap while you're at it.

BTW, what's the trick to getting the shaft off the frame?  I've never broken my reels down quite that far.

fishing user avatarJimzee reply :

What you are doing here is right up my alley. That washer problem being too thick to back the drag all the way off, do you have a belt sander? When I modify Daiwa Pixys turning them into Pixillas, I have the same problem with the drag stack being too thick. I have to sand the Gear Shaft Collar down a little for the sideplate to fit right. It might work...

Awesome, keep it up, I want to see more. :)

fishing user avatarskunked_again reply :

ill take mine in 5.4:1 thankyou

In this pix

patrevo2.jpg

The small white gear you see is the level wind drive gear.  That bearing to the 7 o'clock position of it is the drive shaft main bearing (it's removable BTW for lubing).  Below that you'll see screw holes on the bottom of the pictures on both sideplates.

The main drive shaft has a metal retainer holding it down.  The screw on one side of the plate has to be removed.  (careful, about 1 in three of these I've found to be badly torqued down.  I had to get the Revo one loose today by putting the reel in a rag, then putting in a vice to hold it and then exert great pressure on a flat blade screw to break it loose) Now note the 2 screws at about 9 and 11 o'clock to the main drive bearing.  Those hold down the the plate which is actually a slider that disengages the pinion when the spool release is pushed.  Back those screws out,  it's not necessary to remove them but you do have to lift that side of the plate up enough to get the main shaft metal retainer out from under it.  You'll have to use a fairly straight up lifting motion to clear the drive shaft bearing.  Your drive shaft should now be out for servicing.  A pretty easy reel to learn to disassemble.

One other thing......

Before doing any of this, remove the 2 small springs on top of the pinion gear holder and put away in a safe place!!!!  Those things are not held down and if they go shooting off they're a dickens to find.

:)

Now this I understand.  I worked on a friend's old Diawa last night.  I found a little spring  that I didn't take out.  My first thought- "where the heck did this come from."

fishing user avatarThe_Natural reply :

Hmmm....I figured Pfluegur, BPS, and some Browning reel's parts may be interchangeable, but Revo and Pfluegur?

fishing user avatarThe_Natural reply :

Oh...just saw that Plueger and Abu are both pure fishing brands, and both made in Korea.  I'd bet a paycheck they come off the same assembly line.

The differences between the Revo line and the Patriarch, besides minor ergonomics,  are in the spool and palm plate side.  Put aside the fact that the Pflueger reels come in narrow spool and wide spools, the Revo spool is marginally taller than the Pflueger.  I was equally interested if I could swap the Pflueger centrifugal brake mech with the Revo S.  You can't.  The patriarchs would fit onto the Revo spool shaft but the brakes themselves didn't reach out far enough, when fully extended, to make contact with the outer spool ring mounted on the palm plate.  Shame.

I wouldn't expect all the parts to be interchangeable, but being able to swap gears and such speak quite a bit.

fishing user avatarThe_Natural reply :

I must be asleep....are these the two 'totally different reels stripped down'?

patrevo1.jpg

It just didn't click the first time I read your post. I feel stupid for having to 'research' why the parts would fit. I'm slacking....I didn't know Pure Fishing owned Abu and Revo.  Do the old round Abu's still come from Sweden?

fishing user avatarMicro reply :

Pure Fishing owns Abu Garcia, Pflueger, Shakespeare, Penn, Fenwick, All Star, among others.

Abu's most popular round reels are still made in Sweden - the C3, C4s, Records, and some of the Rockets.  Some of their other round reels, big saltwater reels and some of the lower priced reels are made in China.  Abu's spinning reels are made in China.  Abu's Revo line is made in Korea.   Somehow, Abu has been able to maintain very good quality control despite the diversity of manufacturers.

Plfueger was purchased by Pure Fishing in the last few years.  Since then, their reels have gotten closer and closer to looking like Revos.   In fact, Revos and Pfluegers are now both serviced at Pure Fishing's HQ in Iowa.

It's pretty clear that whoever makes Revos also makes the new Pfluegers and the Johnny Morris line of BCs.

Well, looking at them now I can't remember which is which. I think the reel on the left is a Revo S, the one on the right, a Patriarch. .

fishing user avatarcart7t reply :

Here's one more I'm adding

jm.jpg

This a Johnny Morris Signature JMX10HC, this is the one currently selling for $170. I left the main drive shaft and pinion gear in this shot. While a casual, quick comparison would seem to indicate thay're the same reel as the other 2 it's not. The reel assembly itself is significantly larger. There is a difference in the way the spring release is designed with a small bar held down by a screw which one of the springs fits into. (At the 1 o'clock position in the picture at the top) Another thing of note, the main drive gear on the Morris reel is BIG. Significantly larger than either the Pflueger or Garcia main gear.

The drag stack though, besides being physically larger due to the main gear size, is identical to the Revo and the Patriarch.

I have no doubt this reel is probably made with some machining that's used on the Revo or Pflueger. There are some parts in the mechanics that could be interchanged. The reel uses the pushbutton style palm plate release vs the newer thumbscrew release used on the Garcia or Pflueger.

I'm betting this is an older Pflueger based frame used in the now discontinued Supreme and the Summit. The Patriarch as well as the new President seem to be borrowing the Revo mechanics with some minor differences. I'm betting we're going to see the end of the Pflueger reel handle attachment and see the Pflueger, as well as the BPS line go to the nut screw handle attachment that comes on the latest President and newly introduced BPS Pro Qualifier.

The other reels for comparison

I hope no one thinks I'm bashing because I think they all come from the same place; I went to school for marketing and it just fascinates me.  I would say Korea has a better record/reputation than China, and some of my favorite fishing products come from China (Daiwa Zillion Rods/Quantum PT Superlites)...so I'm not just saying that.  This should probably make the Pflueger guys angry, because generally a Revo is seen as a higher end reel than a Pflueger.  Why?  Marketing!

fishing user avatarMuddy reply :

No I could give a  . I use Pflueger, because they last forever and do the job, only Tackle Junkies care about such things.

Actually, it doesn't make me mad.

The Patriarch is an incredible reel. The best part? It's sort of a sleeper and not getting the attention the Revo's, especially the STX are and thus, the prices on them have been real low, especially on Ebay. I've picked up 5 of them now and not spent over $125 for any of them shipping included.

These were all NIB BTW.

That's an 11 bearing real, aluminum frame and both side plates, Titanium deposition finish, dual braking, etc. Honestly, a better reel than the STX built on literally the same frame with the same parts for way less.

I'm happy. 8-)
