Crank Bait Rod 2025

fishing user avatarmatt996 reply :

I need to invest in a good one for the spring season under $250 what do you guys all use?

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

What kind of cranking will you be doing?

fishing user avatarkickerfish1 reply :

You mention the spring season? Does this mean you will want to use this same cranking rod for jerkbaits as well? Or are you looking to purchase the rod between now and then? Are you wanting sort of a do it all cranking rod? The dobyns champion line has many fine choices for reaction baits. Check TW for a list of all cranking rods from their glass to graphite rods.

For jerkbaits/small to mid size shallow/medium divers the 704 series is a good choice.

If you want an all purpose rod the 705 CB glass rod is my favorite.

For deeper divers and bigger cranks the 805 and 764 seem to be good for this purpose.

All rods are under $250 but you can buy them on sale for well under $200. I got my 705 rod for $160.

The 705 and 704 are also good spinnerbait and topwater rods depending upon the weights of the baits you will be using.

fishing user avatarNitroZ9 reply :

You might want to take a look at the Denali Rosewood series. They are high quality rods with a Limited Lifetime Warranty and are around $200, depending on the model. They have several different cranking models. I don't do a huge amount of cranking and I actually use a Denali Jadewood cranking rod. It has a very small blank and is very lightweight. The Jadewood series also has several different cranking models and sell for around $100 with a Limited Lifetime Warranty. You won't be disappointed with either one.

fishing user avatarnew2BC4bass reply :

Personally I have to buy used to get a $250 (new) rod for bottom baits.  I don't think it is necessary to spend that much money on a cranking rod unless 1) you can afford it, and 2) your heart is set on having all mid to top tier rods.  I'd have all expensive rods if I had the moola.     :eyebrows:   Right now I am using a Daiwa V.I.P. Smallmouth and a Falcon Cara (both in Medium) for cranking duties.  If I ever fish where I need a deep cranking rod, then my MH Airrus Ultra XL will get called up for duty.  Most expensive (my price) was $100.

Having said that, I would love to have the Dobyns 704CB or the Pinnacle.  :blob10:

fishing user avatarSilas reply :

I agree with Kickerfish!

The Dobyns Champion 704CB (glass) is a fantastic cranker for medium cranks and jerkbaits!  I couldn't afford one, but waited and one came up on the forum, brand new....$110 to my door.

Now, If I could just get another deal on a Dobyns, I will jump on it!  Several forum guys are lauding the 705CB.  Didn't think I'd want one of those, but now I may change my mind.

I'm contemplating doing a trade of my St. Croix Legend Tournament 6'9" Dropshot finesse for another Dobyns.....I'm essentially a full cork guy, I found out!

fishing user avatarflyfisher reply :

I just picked up a kistler micro helium 7'  MM and while i have only been able to use it twice it does a great job on cranks up to about 12ft.  I haven't thrown anything deeper yet so i can't comment on that type of performance.

TW has them on sale right now for around $150 and i think they run in the $250 range normally.

fishing user avatarmatt996 reply :

I will be using it for mostly square bills nothing more than 10 feet deep

fishing user avatarrippin-lips reply :

I have a kistler micro mag for my shallow cranks and it works for me. It's my only cranking rod so I can't compare it to anything else.  You can get on on sale right now for $99       Might be worth a shot.

I thought it was preferred not to have a Fast taper in a cranking rod?

The faster the taper the less give before getting into the beef of the rod.  Most agree that a Moderate action is better for treble hook lures.  I see no reason why you can't use a Fast if desired.  Don't tighten drag too high.  Also mono or fluoro rather than braid would be a better bet on a Fast action rod.

EDIT:  Well, he$$, I see from your post count that you weren't asking, but making a statement.  My mistake.  :(

fishing user avatarFROST reply :

length of rod for the depth of cranking is a huge key, just keep it in my mind.also your reel ratio needs to be low takes the stress off you alot. i also believe when cranking you dont need a top of the line rod, to catch alot of bass. you can buy two good cranking rods for a price of a $250 rod

No, I was asking. I am actually in the market for a crankbait rod, also, so I was wanting to know.

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

Some people prefer fast action rods to "snap" cranks out of grass without loading the rod. I am on the fence with this. My deep cranking rod is a Mod. action, yet I can snap and pull it free from weeds without any issues, maybe because I am using braid. I just bought a Mod action rod for traps, and sqaure bills, and plan to use it with braid as well, we'll see if that works for me next year or not. If not, I will go back to a fast.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Dobyn's 764CB RM is the crank bait rod I use for all types of crank baits.

fishing user avatarQuillback reply :

There's so many crankbait model rods out there these days, but I like the Dobyns Champion series and the Phenix X-series.  I'd get that Dobyns RM 764 or else a 704 for throwing the squarebills the OP was asking about.  I'd also look at the Phenix X-10 or X-11.  I don't have any Loomis, but I'd look to see if they have a technique specific CB rod for squarebills.  Lots of good sticks out there to choose from, which is a good thing IMO.  I'd also wait for a sale or check the various for sale forums on this board and others, you'll see lots of CB rods for sale at good prices.

I don't have much experience with various makes of rods for crankbaits.  I will say that all my Falcons (Cara, Expert, Original) have a nice parabolic bend under load.

fishing user avatarRangerphil reply :

I am also looking for a crankbait rod for the lew's bb1 I am getting. I have a g loomis (older model) crankbait rod and like it but I see so many people and pros using less expensive rods and wonder if getting something else would be better? I throw mainly mid depth cranks and square bills. I fish my square bills a little different than most and slowly crawl them shallow. I would love to hear from some of the great cranking guys on here!

fishing user avatartnbassfisher reply :

I always hate to hijack the original posters thread, but what would be good specs for an all around crankbait rod that would be good for throwing all types of cranks?

Thats something I have yet to find myself as well.  In my case my deep cranking rod (St Croix LTB 7'10" Magnum Cranker) is great for just that, deep cranking with the larger baits, like SK 5xds/6xds, Spro Little John DD's, etc... But is poor a choice for general purpose cranking as it just doesn't load or cast well with bait's less than 1/2 oz. So I recently picked up a 7' MH/Mod St Croix Mojo cranking rod for the times I am not throwing the bigger baits, but it is also rated to 1oz. With no time on the water with it yet I don't know if it's the answer as a "do-all" cranking rod.

fishing user avatariabass8 reply :

The 7' mhm mojo was the only mojo i liked. Id still be using it for 1/4-3/4 squarebills had 5 guide eyes not fell out over a season. Only used fluoro with it.

fishing user avatarWar Eagle 44 reply :

I have three rods I use for cranks, a Powell Max 706CB, a GLoomis CBR 845, and a Shimano Cumara Reaction 7'7". I think the Powell or Loomis is better for square bills and shallow to medium depth baits. Either one will do what you want to do no problem. I know some guys will think I'm totally crazy but I think the Powell is the better of these two rods. I've used for every crank from a Bandit 100 to a 6XD and caught fish no problem. It's designed to fish baits more at the top end of the range like the 6XD or DD22 but I've found it to be an excellent square bill rod. LC 1.5's or KVD 1.5's fish great on it for me.

The Cumara is just a beast of a rod, it over powers most any square bill IMO, I find it best for the deepest divers and big 3/4 oz rattle baits.

tnbassfisher, the closest I've found to an "all around" cranking stick is the Powell. I know it's not going to be the absolute best choice in every situation but I've found it to be a good choice in a lot of them.

fishing user avatarKSRonH reply :

As already stated there are many good choices for a crankbait rod and most folks will have more than one depending on the depth, lure or presentation being used. I have a St Croix Avid 7' MHM rod and it comes as close to an ''all around'' crankbait rod that I know of. Take the reel that you will be using on this rod and put it on as many rods that you can find. See what feels best to you as it's all about personal preference. So many options, good luck in your search.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

I posted that Dobyn's 764CB RM is a good all around crank bait rod. The is a $250 price range crank bait bait, 7'6" for the deep divers between 1/2 to 1 oz cranks. Lew's Fritz series crank bait rods are also good for a lot less $$, not in the same class as the 764CB RM however.

A few years ago I picked a Loomis GL2 PR843C from a clearance sale that I use for smaller crankbaits 3/8 to 1/2 oz. This isn't a traditional bass crankbait rod, it's a salt water popping rod that works for small crankbaits and a good structure spoon rod!

I have a 7' M Veritas Micro Guide that is as close to an all around cranking rod that I have found.  I throw everything on it ranging from square bills to 5xd.

When I'm getting specific though I tend to use 3 different rods.  All 3 H2O Xpress Ethos 7'CC for smaller cranks, 7'MH Squarebills, 7'10"MH for deep divers.
