First things first, this is my first post on these forums and I would just like to say hello to all.
I have been using a spinner set up for a while now a just got the interest to use a baitcaster. What would be a good setup for myself considering that I mainly throw jigs, senkos soft bait etc., and frogs. Price range would not be too limited but also not crazy expensive.
Thanks.
Ill keep it under $200
Really rods are all personal choice I would look at the Falcon Bucoo, BPS Carbonlite, Abu Vendetta, Abu Veritas, Shimano Compre, Skeet Reese and St. Croix Bass Mojo
Reels I would look at the Pro Qualifiers, Carbon lites(you can get the combos for under $200), Citica, Caenan, Orra SX, and an Accurist.
I hope this helped everything I just told you I have learned about from the experienced people on this forum
Alright thanks for the help, I will look into those. Any other suggestions?
Im suprised you haven tgot more replys yet but you will tonight, if you need anything just PM me
Look at the Powell Max 703c And the Dobyns Savvy series. 703c. As for your reel if you wanna save about 70-100 bucks, go with the BPS Pro Qualifier or BPS Carbonlite. They are exceprional reels for the money. How ever If you want to spend about 200 on your reel go with the Shimano Curado. They are exceptional. Go with the 100E if your using regular weighted t-rigs jigs i.e 1/8 ounce or more. If you plan on throwing weightless go with the 50E
How much are you looking to spend?
Spend as much as you can for your bottom contact rod. You want as much sensitivity as you can get. If your rod range is $200 then shoot for as high as you can get!
I agree but to suggest you a rod we need to know what the most you can spend is.
I am willing to spend some money because this is gonna be my go to rod.
Thats still not really a price range.
What do you want to spend on a rod? $150 or $500?
Same for your reel.
To be honest I want a decent setup for any price. The price of the carbonlite and Powell 703c is acceptable.
Thats probably one of the best you can get in that range. Also check out the shimano Crucial, its a nice stick. If you have any really in depth questions about the Crucial you could PM SoFlaBassAddict.
Ok So im guessing your price is like under $300 cause you said that was "accepible"
Get a Shimano Cumara super lite and sesitive liftime warranty and the Shimano name pair that with a Citica or Carbon lite and you will have a GREAT combo
I told you the Cumara cause you need to spend more on your rod. But if you can get a Curado you can find em used for about $140 or $150 any of those combos will never let you down
That would be correct, my price range is under $300. And I did spell acceptable right by the way.
Ha. Ha. Ha. I know lol but really I would go with thr Cumara
Pshhhhhhh forget that Cumara... and a reel for that matter. Just pick you up a G.Loomis NRX and tie the braid directly to the tip and fish it cane pole style 8-) 8-)
You can call it "The head Turner " :
Do that and tell us how it works out for ya
When I first started out fishing my junky reel broke so I did it with my Ugly Stick. Takes a while to get the fly cast down but it works!
The Cumaras are really nice rods, top quality components. Honestly though, besides the aesthetic looks of the rod, the increase in sensitivity over the Crucials isn't all that much. It's noticeable, but I don't know if I can justify another seventy to a hundred bucks on a rod. Having the completely exposed blank reel seat is quite nice though. If you've got the cash though, they're great rods.
For under 300 bucks total (add applicable taxes):
Shimano Crucial 6'10" MH Xfast ($149.99)
BPS Pro Qualifier ($99.99)
30-40lb Power Pro Braid ($12.49)
10-14lb XPS Fluoro for leaders ($16.99)
You can probably throw all of the lures you listed on that rod and be fine. I'm not really sure if I'd want to throw a frog in really heavy stuff on that, but in sparser cover you'd have little to no problems. If you want a bigger stick that will still work for most stuff the Crucial 7'6" MH Flippin Stick will do everything you need as well. Those are $179.99 new. If you've got the coin to handle buying a better reel, look at a Curado. For most situations something in a 6.X:1 or 7.X:1 gear ratio will work.
I've got four Crucials now and will be adding a fifth before too much longer. Couldn't be happier with those rods. I think I have 5 Pro Qualifiers. Fantastic reels, especially at the price. You can get better reels, but I've been extremely satisfied with them.
Make sure you check out the Flea Market here. You can usually find some really good deals on quality equipment.
Cumaras are only $200 but if you want a Curado go with the Crucial

The Cumara Reaction series start at 200 bucks. Thats not what he's really looking for from what I understand. The regular Cumaras are 219+. If you shop around, I'm sure you can find them at better prices though. The same holds true for anything mentioned in this thread.
I have a kistler helium 2 ltx mh casting in the flea market. It's a 6'6" fast action. Retail is just under $300 and this rod is in mint cond. I also have a like new shimano curado 200e7 spooled w/ 50# Power Pro. If your interested, I'll sell you the combo for $260 shipped.

What is a Reaction I have ment to ask someone already but never think about it

Im by no means an expert on SHIMANO's products, but i'm too lazy at the moment to look it up, but I can scientifically guess it's a rod designed for reaction baits. i.e Cranks, Spinnerbaits, etc. It probably has a parabolic bend.

BASSclary hit it on the head.
Just wondering, is the Abu Garcia Veritas a decent rod?
No one knows for sure but im probably gonna get one so is my cuz. They look really nice and they are suppost to be lighter than carrot stix!!!
Here is a TT review >>>http://www.tackletour.com/previewabugarciaveritas.html
I was just looking around at the rods that all of you suggested and then I found this one. I mean if its a good rod why not get it instead because its so much cheaper. But I was just wanting to see if anyone had any experience using it.
You know it doesnt come out untill the first of Semptember, right? But Cabelas has them on pre-order

Lol... oh.
I would go with a Cabelas XML which are on sale for $70 and a Quantum Catalyst which is on sale for $90 and come in at $160 plus tax or shipping.
The XML series of rods is great and is normally $140 and I have 4 of them and can't beat the warranty.
If you are looking for a crankbait rod I would suggest the Cabelas Prodigy PDC705-1 MH/MF which I have and use as a shallow to medium crankbait rod. I have it paired with a Daiwa Exceler and the total combo investment is $130.
Cabelas also has the XMLTi rods on sale for $119-$140 http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?id=0030280119418a&navCount=5&podId=0030280&parentId=cat20372&masterpathid=&navAction=jump&cmCat=MainCatcat20166-cat20372&catalogCode=9IS&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat20372&hasJS=true
For the amount you've listed I would get a Powell 703 or 704 and pair it with the Curado 100. You could fish all of the things you mentioned, and for the money the Powell's have good sensitivity when fishing with jigs, t-rigs, etc. If you can spend a bit more you should consider a Dobyns rod, with the Curado.

this is would make you a really sweet setup! A Daiwa Zillion 7.1 and a Zillion rod 6.9MH XF.. that rod is very very sensitive (The Zillion rods are IMHO are very close to as Sensitive as my Steez and I should know lol I own A LOT of Steez and a few Zillion rods and there light to) that rod is mega powerful and will handle frogs with ease and has plenty of sensitivity for any soft plastic. that setup with 40# braid will give you all you need for any single hook rig and frogs.. balances well in hand and is pretty light... Zillion rods are light the reels are a little heavier but I weighed that setup right now for you and it comes out at 362 grams. thats not bad when you look at how powerful that rod and reel is. plus it will last you forever. I think it would be something you would really enjoy and you could get the setup new if you look for sales or on ebay for a deal on the reel 420ish...
