Dammit. My almost new Veritas that I got for my birthday back in march just had the tip snapped off on a regular hookset with a frog. I'm careful with my rods and never banged the tip into anything. I didn't buy the warranty and don't have the reciept. Is there anything I can do to get it replaced other than buying a brand new one? I'm 16 and can't afford a new rod. I got it at DSG. Can I fix it? Please help!
It should be covered under Abu's warranty. The DSG thing is replacement insurance, not manufacturer's warranty.

Never hurts to get in touch with the manufacturer. I bought 3 Falcon Experts on closeout from a guy here. Fell face first into a rock pile and broke 2 pieces off the end of the 7' Medium rod....a favorite of mine. No idea what the warranty on the rods was, or if there was even one. Had to send in a 6" section where the rod's specs were along with $80, and they shipped me a new Cara.
I realize this isn't what you are hoping for, but your situation is completely different than mine was. My rod breaking was totally my fault, and I told them so. Your rod broke through no fault of yours. My rod had an MRSP of $280....yours is a bit less.
I definitely would stop in at Dick's. They might replace it right there and then.
No receipt/proof of purchase = no dice with Abu from my experience. You will likely have to pay their repair fee. I have an email from them that I will try and find.

QuoteThank you for taking the time to contact us about your fishing rod. We are sorry you have had an undesirable fishing experience recently. Unfortunately, we do not have a repair center for rods nor replacement parts. If your rod failed due to a manufacturing defect and is still under warranty, we will be happy to replace it with a new rod of the same or comparable model.Standard Procedure:
If your rod is within the original warranty period, we will need to inspect your rod to determine the nature of the break. Please reply to this email and include pictures of the (1) damaged rod, (2) pictures of the model number, and (3) include a brief description on how your rod broke. We will also need some (4) form of proof of purchase, do you have a copy of a bank statement or credit card statement to show when it was purchased? And a daytime phone number along with your full name and physical address. There is a $9.95 processing fee per rod on all claims. Rods NOT covered under warranty can be submitted for replacement for a nominal fee.
bought it with cash and no reciept. guess I'll have to take it to DSG and see if they replace it.On 6/21/2013 at 3:49 AM, hooah212002 said:No receipt/proof of purchase = no dice with Abu from my experience. That is why I stay away from Veritas rods!! Heard about way to many quality control problems with them. Love the rod. It is light, nice looking, very sensitive but just cannot put any confidence in them that they won't break. Sorry to hear about that. Hope they can do something for you.

If you happen to have a DSG scorecard they could look up the purchase. I don't know how far back they keep track of things but I just went through something similar with a purchase. No receipt but they found it when they looked it up by my scorecard. That was as good as a receipt to them and they took the return.
I do have a scorecard. Would they take a broken rod for return or would I have to get a replacement? On 6/21/2013 at 4:26 AM, Felix77 said:If you happen to have a DSG scorecard they could look up the purchase. With the scorecard(if you used it at the purchase).... you can look it up online also, print/email it, which would give you proof of purchase for abu.
The warranty is 3 years with abu. I had a rod warrantied with no receipt before that was a gift and I didn't even pay the $9.95 fee they usually charge for shipping. You will also probably get to keep the broken rod. You can even get the tip repaired on that locally cheap and come out ahead. Ive never had any problem with their service, its been nothing short of excellent with me.
CP, I hope that you get it taken resolved by either Dicks or Abu. Good luck.

I was going to suggest the same thing. Both DSG and bps have exchanged or refunded rods for me. I usually don't keep my receipts so they just look me up under my rewards card. Oh, also at Bps I was able to swap out a two yr old bps rod with broken tip. This one wasn't under my rewards card so they asked me to buy a an extended warranty for like $20 bucks and gave me a new rod on the spot. Not sure if it was a bend the rules kind of thing but they found a way to help. Just an idea.
I bought a rod from dicks broke the tip 2 weeks later and took it back and they exchanged it for me.
I know they also offer warranties when u purchase rods from them. They give u the full amount you paid for rod and you can either replace or buy a different one

Last thing I would do is be negative on an item already purchased, I don't see the point in making someone feel bad. The intent of the post is what to do about it.
Back to the point, DSG in my experience have been good to deal with, no guarantee that you will get satisfaction but that would be my first stop, you may just walk out with a new rod and not have to deal with shipping and waiting.
Pure Fishing as always been very fair to me, I would however use the phone instead of an email. I'm optimistic things will work out well for you.
I think you misunderstood what I was trying to do. Sorry if I made him feel bad as that was not my intent, but I genuinely feel bad for him that he paid good money for a rod that could not stand up to a hook-set. Just expressing my frustration about those rods with him. I feel his pain. That's all.

i didnt get the impression you were trying to make him feel bad myself. but honestly, i see a lot of people constantly snapping and breaking the higher priced rods. its part of why i stay away from them, i hate having to deal with returns and shipping and stuff like that.
CP, in the future, always save your receipts for stuff youve paid good money for. even if you just cram them all in a folder and stuff them away in a drawer some where. after a year or so you can clear out the older ones and throw them away...
I scan and save to file may of my receipts as some fade in time.
Thank God, I found the reciept! Scanned and printed a copy of it and I'll mail the rod to abu along with the warranty form, the $9.95 check, and the reciept copy. I hope they send me a new rod, I actually really like it. I think I just had bad luck.

Nice!!! Good for you!!
They don't require you to mail the rod in. Take the picks and if it was defective a new one will show up at your door. I have done it once with a veritas and like said before I was able to repair the original rod so I ended up with two. The replacement they sent me just broke and I sent them an email with pics and info. I'm hoping I have the same response of "expect your shipment in 7-10 days". They didn't even charge me the 9.95. If you have to mail the rod back that's probably easily 25 bucks just to ship one way. I would stand by to hear back from Abu.
I'll try that before I ship the rod, thanks. On 6/22/2013 at 3:43 AM, jsc4324 said:They don't require you to mail the rod in. (Dear Abu Garcia,
My 3-month old Veritas rod recently broke on a regular hookset. I have never abused the rod or banged it into anything. It snapped right in front of the first guide from the tip guide. The model is the 7' 6" MH. I would like to request a warranty replacement of the rod. Included is a picture of the break, rod identification number, and proof of purchase. I bought it at Dick's Sporting Goods in march. Please reply back as soon as possible with information about what can be done. Thank you for your time.)
I attached a picture of the rod break, my reciept, and the rod identification number.
Do you think they'll send me a new one?
They should. My original complaint was a cracked micro guide. This time two guides broke right off while casting. I'm waiting to hear back also. I don't see why they won't send you a new one. Seems to clearly be a defect. The rod is covered by a 3 yr warranty so I'm sure pure fishing will make it right.
I did see a video with Blair Wiggins explaining that rods do get damaged in shipping and handling in the store. He demonstrated shaking the rod and stated if there was damage it just may show up at that time.

Youll probably have a new rod within a week
Cpbass I just heard back from abu on my rod issue. New rod on the way as I suspected. I do have to pay the 9.95 but considering its my second time replacing the rod I guess that's a pretty fair deal. Hopefully they are as good to you
I also just heard from them. I am happy to announce that I am getting a new rod for just the $9.95 shipping fee. Thank you all so much for your help!
This is one of the most common breaks in modern rods and is caused by high sticking or other wise bending the tip beyond 90* to the blank. If it were a defect it would have broken on the first use. At any rate retailers and manufacturers are both generally eager to please so I'm sure you'll make out fine. Going forward, continue handling your rods with care but also be extra aware of your technique and be sure to never bend a rod beyond 90*. It not only jeopardizes the blank but actually loses mechanical advantage over the fish.

Good deal! Like DVT said manufacturing defects usually show up in the first couple of uses, so I'm not completely sure your break was due to such a defect. However, lucky for you (and the rest of us) most manufacturers are very willing to replace a rod even if it's blatantly obvious that it broke due to misuse rather than manufacturing defect. Manufacturers know that they're going to be replacing 1 of every X number of rods for some reason, so they build that in to their pricing strategy. It's basically a replacement plan that you're paying for whenever you buy a rod. I've heard of people getting replacement rods before after straight-up telling them that they slammed the rod in a car door!
Rod manufacturers know what breaks rods, they have been doing this a long time. Whether it's a rod, an auto part and any about item, companies producing parts figure product defects into the overall wholesale pricing. Those defective parts during production is what kept my scrap bins full. My partner and I for a short period of time owned a stamping plant, one might think parts being stamped with the same dies and same pressure would be perfect everytime, not so. A rod is probably no different than any other manufactured item, not every one will be perfect.
OP, are you using braid? If so, have you set your drag properly to slightly give on the hook set to prevent ripping the lips off the fish, and rod breakage? Just curious as its something I had never thought about till doing a lot of research on braid before switching to powerpro 30#.

drag? What's drag? Jk. I am using 50lb braid, I use it for frogging, punching, and spinnerbaits. I do loosen the drag quite a bit when using spinnerbaits but not for the other two.On 6/25/2013 at 10:08 PM, loudcherokee said:OP, are you using braid? I asked the guy that works at my local tackle shop bc I have some of those as well.. He told me that they had a 3 year over the counter warranty.
