Copolymer Fishing Line? 2024

fishing user avatar*Hank reply :

What is the purpose of copolymer line?

Just wondering.

Thanks!

fishing user avataraavery2 reply :

Copolymerization allows the blending of multiple polymers to get some of the best properties from each.

fishing user avatar*Hank reply :

Wow that's cool I'm deffenetly going to get some!

What brand do you recommend?

I use Pline CX, many here like Yo-Zuri Hybrid, another one that I like is Silverthread.   There are a lot of good copoly lines that are inexpensive.  If you a looking for help choosing one, tell about how you will use it, baits, weights, environment and other details, and I am sure someone will be able to tell you which one is the "Best".

fishing user avatarDarren. reply :

Do you plan to use this straight spooled, or as

a leader tied to braid, or other mainline?

If you're going to use it straight on spinning or

baitcasting gear, try some line conditioner as

some of the copoly brands can be rather springy

and jumpy off your spool in coils.

I don't think anyone is truly qualified to say what

line is "best" as that is entirely subjective to that

person's opinion.

I've tried a number of copoly brands and like

Yo-Zuri Hybrid and P-Line Floroclear the best.

That's me, you can do a search and find others

who hate the Floroclear line... experience matters.

Pick one and try it out.

fishing user avatar*Hank reply :

Wow thanks for the tip!

I would probably just straight spool it and there's nothing I hate worse than line manegment problems...

:)

fishing user avatarillinifan4152 reply :

I highly recommend McCoy Mean Green. Fantastic line at a fantastic price!

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

I use copolymer for most of my moving baits because it stretches and provides shock absorbency but is extremely abrasion resistant.

fishing user avatarTrippyJai reply :

McCoy Mean Green is the way to go if you don't want any line management.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Try a few different brands, they are all fairly inexpensive.

I just purchased 600 yards of Yo-Zuri Hybrid on sale for

$8.99. I also picked up 1500 yards of Izorline for $16.99.

Then another 20% off and free shipping with some additional

purchases.

I like yozuri hybrid and pline cxx in smaller diameters, max 10lb. Floroclear up to 12lb. Those three lines work great for me.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Copolymer isn't a hybrid monofilament line! Yo-Zuri hybrid is 2 polymers co extruded; nylon core with FC outer jacket. Copolymer is 2 polymers mixed together in a compound or bipolymer, then extruded into a monofilament line.

P-Line FluoroClear is a hybrid, P-Line CXX is a copolymer, 2 different processes.

Pline CX is fluorocarbon coated copolymer.

I think its a pretty strong line. Just not as strong pound for pound as hybrid and cxx. Floroclear is a smaller diameter line and easy handling, that's why its my goto for finesse. I've landed a 5lb pike on 6lb line, and a 10lb+ muskie on 10lb. The green mist color is great in slightly stained/clear water too...

Yes, FloroClear CX Premium is a hybrid.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

Floroclear is one of the worst lines I have ever fished. After several beak-offs on multiple spools,

I finally gave up. ALL of the breaks were while casting. The line is very manageable and I wanted

it to work, but it didn't for me.

fishing user avatarCWB reply :

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

What he said. Hated floroclear. Tried Yo-Zuri Hybrid some years ago and haven't looked back. Strong as heck, pretty manageable and abrasion resistant. Have used 15 lb. on spinning gear for skipping with no issues.

Is McCoy mean green good for deep cranking ?...

What pound test would you recommend?

I use 10lb for cranking, but I don't crank deeper than 12 feet.

fishing user avatarHoosierHawgs reply :

Does anybody have experience w/Berkley Iron Silk?

fishing user avatarThe Fisher reply :

I use Silver Thread AN40 which is very thin, limp, and hasn't coiled at all on my spinning reel. It is very strong. It casts a mile and knots hold really well.

If you want an abrasion resistant line, look at Silver Thread Excalibur.

fishing user avatarNick49 reply :

I have seen the basic "characteristic differences" between braid, fluoro and mono.  Can someone explain the unique characteristics associated with P-Line copolymers or Mean Green?   (i.e. stretch, line management, buoyancy, knot holding, etc.)  Thanks.

I know some others have said they had problems with it breaking. This surprises me. I have used it quite a bit and can't recall it ever breaking. In fact, getting it to break when I needed it to was a problem at times. It's plenty strong, but a little stretchy. Definitely more manageable than a lot of comparably priced lines that I would consider "strong."
fishing user avatarplumworm reply :

I have used P-line cxx for many years on my crank and spinner bait reels. As said by one of the Mods, the strength to diameter ratio is second to none . Cxx is my go-to.

It casts real nice. Some complained about its abrasion resistance. Dont recall having issues with the one spool I had but Id be cautious.

Yozuri Hybrid is my go to. Some have tried to argue on here that line conditioner doesnt effect it. Ive noticed liberal use of it the night before GREATLY improves handling.

8 lbs gamma spinning & 12 lbs for casting green I also love the yo Zuri hybrid 6 lbs & 12 lbs line.

Flouroclear is an  outstanding line ...I also love iron silk as the new version may be the best on the market ....I fought a 32 inch musky on 6 lb with no problem.Great castability , no memory, and  very very strong.Love it on my spincast reels and makes a great inline spinner line as well as cranks but can be used  for anything. Some find it a little  stretchy but for me I say ....so????? Nothing wrong with stretch  ...a fabulous line.

fishing user avatarK_Mac reply :

I am a big fan of P-Line CXX. While it does have some memory, it is no worse than YoZuri Hybrid in my opinion. Either line benefits from the use of KVD Line and Lure. Both lines are great values and are worth trying.

fishing user avatarThe Fisher reply :

Silver Thread AN40 in 6# is on two spinning set ups.

fishing user avatarTurkey sandwich reply :

I've cursed Hybrid as a main line before (though, at the time I wasn't familiar with line conditioner), but have grown to love it as a leader coupled with braid.  I like fishing it as a leader versus mainline for a few reasons.

- it's still pretty low visibility compared to mono

- with braid, it still provides a lot of sensitivity but with a bit of a cushion for reaction baits and can help keep treble hooks pinned to the fish.

- it's d**n near indestructible.  12lb carries a 17+lb breaking strength and can be fished through sandpaper covered in razor blades.

That said, as a main line...

it's memory can be crazy and without aggressive use of line conditioner, you may be pulling backlashes and birds nests for days, potentially damaging the line and your patience. Also, it's not going to cast nearly as well as braid.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

I have used Yo-Zuri hybrid and P-Line CXX.  I have had no issues with either of them.

fishing user avatarTxHawgs reply :

The Yo-Zuri, Silver Thread and Mean Green do they sink or float. I have never fished a co-poly, I currently fish expensive fluros. Guess the only benefit would be stretch for treble baits over fluros correct? Right now for those baits I'm throwing the Sunline Reaction, can anyone think of why I should maybe try a co-poly over it? If it floats I will try it as a leader to braid for topwater instead of the Sunline Reaction leader on braid. Thanks guys.

I use 15lb Mccoy Mean Green (.015 inches, .381 mm) for small swimbaits and have been very satisfied. Affordable, smooth, supple, abrasion resistant, and no memory. $8.99 for 250 yards now that's value! I have this spooled on my BB1 baitcast reel and Shimano.

fishing user avatarPAGreg reply :

Another vote for McCoys. Been using Mean Green. Just ordered a spool of Xtra Clear to try.

fishing user avatarHoosierHawgs reply :

Interested in the Silver Thread AN40. I could get a 3,000 yard spool for $15 so that seems like a great deal. Does it sink or float? How is stretch and sensitivity? Line handling? For reference I usually use Trilene XL.

fishing user avatarThe Fisher reply :

I use AN40 on spinning reels. Low stretch, very supple, never had a line twist, casts a mile. I'd try it at that price.

Here's some info

SPECIFICATIONS

Silver Thread AN40 was developed with the stealth approach in mind. Designed with an incredibly small diameter, this line can really cover the distance. The AN40 formula is very limp and supple, making it a favorite among fishermen. If you require long casts and low underwater visibility to get close to the fish, look no further than AN40. Available in original silver and low-visibility green.

Yards LB Test Average Diameter
300 4 .0070 in
300 6 .0086 in
300 8 .0100 in
300 10 .0112 in
275 12 .0128 in
275 14 .0136 in
275 17 .0147 in
275 20 .0161 in

It's tuff but the memory is horrible not so much an issue with a baitcaster but the stiffnes  of the line I believe comprises the smoothness and lenth of a cast

fishing user avatarRacerx reply :

I like Fluoroclear and have never had a single issue with it. I decided to try the P-Line CX when spooling up my new Curado.  First thing I noticed was the "springiness" that others have mentioned. I guess I'll see how it is when I finally get to throw it. Fingers crossed.

Don't remember what I paid for my 3000 yard spools, but pretty sure it was quite a bit more than that.  I think you should grab a spool.  I've got 12# on several reels and like it so far.  Also have 8# on a couple b/c reels.  Don't use any line conditioner on it.  Last year was my first time using AN40.  Working great so far.  Got to try a small spool of Mean Green.  Lot of people like it.  So many good lines, so little time.  :(

fishing user avatarDaleGribble reply :

I love pline floroclear as well. Use it for cranking and trigs and soft plastics. Castability is great, sensitivity is good, line memory is not an issue especially with line conditioner. Never had a problem with it.

I just figure buy what works for a good price. That's why I've mostly stuck with Trilene for everything that's not contact or frogs. So I think I will go ahead and give the AN40 a try especially for the price.
