$100 or Less Casting Rod? 2024

fishing user avatarBrett's_daddy reply :

Okay, I would like a versatile rod that i could fish several different types of lures with...anything from senkos and craw fish to crank baits to smaller swim baits to top water. Right now the rods I'm looking at are as follows (in no particular order):

St. Croix Rage ($60)

No. 8 Black Out ($80)

Duckett Ghost ($99)

There may be others but those are the 3 I've found that pique my interest. Obviously the less money i have to spend all the better as I can put it towards something else. I'm thinking 7ft. MH/F would be the most versatile rod length/action for most all of the lures/baits I listed above but if you have other suggestions I'm all ears :).

I didn't have very good luck with the ghost and braid.

Reds gear has an okuma tcs for $104 and they have a $10 coupon.

fishing user avatarFishin' Fool reply :

I bought 2 Rages but sold them both. Didn't care for the handle.

Abu Garcia Villain is $79.97 at Bass Pro right now.

fishing user avatarRbm18 reply :

I know its few dollars more but the Dobyns Fury is a nice rod. $109.00

The rage for $60 sounds like a pretty hard to beat deal. Have you been able to get your hands on all these rods and see what feels best to you? Take into account what is most important for you, sensitivity, power, feel, etc. I've been looking around at medium light & light rods abit lately. I was impressed with the new Lew's TP-1 Speed Sticks. The blank felt light and sensitive, and I was surprised how much I liked the Winn grip handle. They are $100, top of your budget, but worth a look.

fishing user avatarSMITTY0045 reply :

I have the 7' MH Duckett Ghost and it is an incredibly versatile rod. Very sensitive, light, and durable. I highly recommend this rod

fishing user avatarS. Sass reply :

I personally haven't used Fenwick but I know I have seen more than a few times people here saying these rods are not a bad rod.

Fenwick HMG GT73MHF Casting Rod 7'3" one piece rod Medium heavy rod power, fast rod action $58.88 at 41% off it might be a steal.

Also you mentioned the St. Croix but not the Mojo Bass Casting Rods. The MBC70MHF rod is a nice all around rod and at $89.00 40% off and Free shipping its hard to beat. yes its not the latest greatest newest model but it was just a short while ago and they are very nice. They have several models to choose from but I emailed St. Croix and asked a similar question as yours and that is the model they suggested I try as a somewhat all around rod for me and the soft plastics and spinner baits etc I throw a lot. You might try and email or call them and see what one they suggest for you. But I am very pleased enough that I bought another.

I agree Fishin' Fool I dislike the Rage handles but some do so that might be a option as well if you like that grip I just don't care for it either.

fishing user avatarGoRavens reply :

I have the 7' mh ghost. Very nice rod. Plenty sensitive. Ive usedmmostly braid on it and some FC. With that said I just got a Daiwa tatula xt rod but haven't used it yet. It was 94$

fishing user avatarDCales84 reply :

As mentioned before the Ghost series of rods are nice. I wouldn't say they are the finest rod at the $100 price point but they are better than most. As with most EVA foam handled rods I found the Ghosts handle to be a bit slick so I added some shrink wrap grip and it's much improved. On my 7' MH Ghost the only thing I've used that I did not feel it handled well has been spinnerbaits... Esp larger baits around 1/2oz or more. Jigs, T-rigs, weightless senkos, and smaller crank baits can be handled easily. I will also chime in on the Falcon Bucoo series of rods. I have 3 different Bucoo models and the 7' MH is a true workhorse. It has handled everything the Ghost has and will also handle spinnerbaits and larger cranks easier. Again the Falcon needed some attention on the foam grip but aside from that if you can score one at less than retail it's a great all around rod and I'm pretty sure it's American made.

fishing user avatarChris186 reply :

I like Duckett rods, but not so much the Ghost. I had a 7'3 heavy that snapped on a hookset with a 3/8oz jig. I would get the rage, actually just bought one myself. There was a place i saw last week that had the old Duckett Macro Magics with the 20yr warranty for $100

fishing user avatarxDirty reply :

Abu garcia veritas 2.0 7ft, i prefer the medium  but medium heavy might be more versatile.

The falcon bucoo 7ft mh is nice, i have the micro guide version and while its nice i probably would just get the regular version and save 30 bucks.

Honorable mention, the 40 dollar berkley ylightning shock rod 7ft mh is a very nice for the money, a little bit on the heavier side in comparison to the other roads i mentioned but still very nice for the money

fishing user avatarpaleus reply :

Check out the Abu Veritas and Vendetta. The Vendetta seems to be a little stiffer than the Veritas. Both under $100

What about the Villian on sale at Bass Pro Shops for $79.97 right now? Normally  $179.99.

$79 qualifies you for a Abu Garcia sweatshirt for S&H costs.

fishing user avatar0119 reply :

Get the biggest for your bang!  Go to pure fishing's close out web store and get a $150 Fenwick Aetos or Smallmouth rod for 50%. Better rod than paying full retail for a lesser rod.

fishing user avatarEmersonFish reply :

Buy the Rage. Great blank for such a low price. Cut off the black cover on the handle. You can shape the foam underneath a little if you like. Wrap it with tennis racket grip tape. BOOM!

fishing user avatarMIbassyaker reply :

Between FFO tackle and the St. Croix rage closeouts, I bought 4 casting rods this winter, every one under $100 (not counting the reels, of course):

FFO also usually has a promo code active that will knock even more off the price or shipping...they cycle through a few different ones every several weeks.

Where do you see the Abu Garcia Villain for $79 at Bass Pro? When I type it in there's nothing but Vendetta's, Vengeance and Veritas.

fishing user avatarFishin' Fool reply :

Unfortunately you have to go into the store. Not sure if you have one near you.

You might want to call ahead and see what sizes they have left because at that price they are going fast.

That's where I'd be headed. The Villian is a darn good rod for $80.

With a gift card and credit card points even a better deal for $35. Plus you can submit for a Abu Garcia sweatshirt too :)

Just don't get the 7'6" MH if you want an all-around rod.  Although rated down to 3/8 oz., it will barely cast 1/2 oz. a decent fishing distance.

As mentioned, the Fenwick Smallmouth and Aetos at FFO are great rods.  The HMG will most likely be the older model.  Still a very good rod at what FFO sells them for....or the full $99.99 for that matter.

If you read through some of the links already given to other threads asking this question, you will come across Berkley Lightning Shock and H2O rods as possible options.  My standard Lightning is a decent rod for the money.  Other possibilities are the Berkley E-Motion and the Field & Stream Tec Spec Elite (sold by Dick's Sporting Goods).

No experience with the #8 rod, but have read a couple good reviews of it and a youtube video.

My choice is normally to go for the expensive rod on sale unless looking for a specific model  As it happens the last new rod I bought was the Fenwick HMG 7'2" Medium-Mod Fast from FFO after a friend told me how well he liked his and what he used it for.  Turned out to be a very useful rod for me as well.

Out of the list, the Rage. If I had a choice in that price range, probably a *** *** black.

I went to my "local" Bass Pro (which is over 2 hours away from me) and they don't have any Villain 2.0's. Yes, I did call first to find that out but wanted to go any way. They said they never had the Villain and you can't find it anywhere on their web site either...just Veritas, Vendetta and Vengeance.

fishing user avatarMaster Bait'r reply :

I got a MF 6'10" 13 Ohmen spinning rod for $65 at Gander once.  Also got I think a 7'1" MHXF Crucial for I think $75 iirc @DSG closeout .47 tag extravaganza.

I'll be signing autographs later if anybody is interested.

Weird. I don't know what to tell you. My receipt is right in front of me on my desk, I get to submit for a sweatshirt. Sorry you didn't have better luck.

fishing user avatarFishin' Fool reply :

Go Dobyns Fury. Order from American Legacy and sigh up for their mailing list which will get you $25 off your order. You'll still have to pay shipping but it will be under $100.

Yeah thats were I bought my Fury. Didn't think about that.

fishing user avatarBaitMonkey1984 reply :

I really like the St.Corix Rage, one of my favorite rods. I jumped on a halo twilit series rod during the 25 days of christmas and really like that rod. Light, and loads up nice too. TW might still have them for like $60.
