Yo Zuri Hybrid vs PLINE PF/CX/CXX review 2024

fishing user avatarKoop reply :

I have been an avid user of PLINE CXX this year as well as PLINE CX. Both are great lines, but lately with all the threads about Yo Zuri Hybrid, I decided to give it a try when I saw a spool of 12# Camo Green in the bargan bin at Gander Mountain for $4. I would have rather had the lo-vis clear but hey for $4 I figured I'd give it a go.

Now I hear a lot of people on these forums talking strictly about CXX, the high abrasion resistance extra strong version. But I think many are overlooking the other products in this line that PLine offers, the PF and CX.

PLine PF is a great line as well. it is a small diameter, clear line that has a higher break rating than the # it is rated for (much like other lines, but this one is up there.). This line was nice, smooth and had very low memory and management issues. 12# diameter was .01244 and broke at 18#.

PLine CX is a clear fluorescent copolymer. The line is coated with fluorocarbon to help with abrasion resistance and also gives the added benefit of lower visibility. This line has some line management and memory issues that are a turn off for me caused by the fluoro coating. It is a good line overall, but will not be my choice in the future, it is almost as if they couldn't get the sweet spot. It's close... but not quite there. 12# diameter was .011 and broke at 16#

Pline CXX as stated this is the heavy duty line. When I tested this line I used the 12# (which actually had a breaking point of 27#). This line is a beast had a diameter of .0148.

This line is highly abrasion resistant. Great for working around rocks, never broke off from smacking rocks with spinners, jerk baits etc (!with re-tying). This speaks for it self, I found PLINE CXX to have very little memory issues. This includes fishing in cold weather (Cold WI weather). When I switched to PLine CXX I immediately noticed how great the sensitivity was, this stuff was amazing!

I then tried out the Yo-Zuri hybrid in my testing today. First I'll get the technical stuff out of the way. I used 12# test, it has a diameter of .013 and broke right at 20# on the mark.

That being said, it doesn't have the added strength of the PLine CXX but has a smaller diameter. It has a larger diameter than the PLine CX and PF but also a higher breaking point.

This line is smooth. I will say that right off the bat, the first cast I watched my spinner bait hit the water and sat there for a minute and thought... wow, that was nice. There was no memory, no issues at all, it was just smooth. It remained that way the entire duration, I was surprised to see absolutely no line management issues. The other thing that surprised me was along with the smoothness, was added casting distance. I got probably an added 10-20% distance with this line over any of the PLine lines I threw. I decided the .0006 increase in diameter size over the PLine PF warranted the 2# breakage increase and better casting distance any day in my book.

Well to wrap things up, it comes down to my 2 favorites...

PLine CXX and my new favorite Yo-Zuri Hybrid. I do not think these lines can be compared directly, to me they are in two different categories and intended for two different applications. I will now be throwing Yo-Zuri hybrid on my spinnerbaits, cranks, jerkbaits and I will be throwing PLine CXX on my t-rigged plastics and other set ups I deem to require a higher break point.

This has definitely prompted me to give the yo-zuri hybrid soft variation a shot on my spinning set ups.

I hope this has been informative and will help some of the people who have been trying to figure out these two very different types of line.

Good post, I'm sure a few folks will benifit from your info... :)

BTW,  your gonna love the ultrasoft on the spinning rigs.. ;)

fishing user avataradclem reply :

I saw very similar results when I tried CXX vs Yo-Zuri.  I have sine ditched the CXX and am using all Hybrid and Ultra Soft.  Ultra Soft on a spinning reel is amazing and it is also very good on a BC as well.

Later, ;)

how is the cxx on spinning reels?  i picked up a small spool of the 6lb to try out , but i havnt spooled it up yet..

fishing user avatarsteezy reply :

Koopa, that was a great review and has forced me to take another serious look and re-evaluate Yo Zuri for more of my setups.

Not bad, a little bit coily, for spinning tackle I would go with Hybrid, less coily and more manageable than CXX of the same lb test.

CXX is really for when you need something ridiculously strong and abrassion resistant.

It's been great for me on two Abu cardinal 502's. Disclaimer: after spooling, I let all (or nearly all) the line come off the spool behind a boat/canoe then reel it up w/ tension. You can also do this on land using a weight/a person/whatever to keep the end of the line stationary while you walk out the line of the spool. Then just reel it up w/tension. This greatly reduces (eliminates?) line twist when using these lines on spinning reels.  I do this w/ CXX, Yo-Zuri, and fluoro.

fishing user avatarsweet daddy reply :

I blew money on both of them and I wouldn't recommend either of them.

So how much money did you "blow"? Neither line is expensive,

the cost of the trial isn't much of a factor.

I experiment with different lines all of the time. Most line is "ok".

What usually stands out is bad line, not good line. Some really

suck! Among those you might choose to fish, they generally

have a couple of attributes that are particularly important to

you.  It seems to me that the issues are always some kind of

compromise.

::)

fishing user avatarsweet daddy reply :

To expand on how they suck, one word stiff. I don't spool any line under 12 lb on any of my reels because I fish heavy cover, and expensive lures. For the hybrid I lost seven dollars, and the pline was a buck fifty to two bucks on clearance. Both of them felt like piano wire, flew off the spool, and wasted time that I can never get back. If the light versions work for your needs by all means use it, just kill the hype on the stuff above eight lb.

You know Ive have switched to the YZ Hybrid 6,8, and 10 and love it.

RW suggested it and Im really glad I switched.

I just set up a frogging/heavy cover rod and saw some Hybrid 15 lb in Smoke in clearance and put it on the baitcaster on that new setup. I loved the lighter YZ Hybrid stuff so much why not. Well I hate it.      As said here its very stiff (piano wire is pretty accurate really) and it does tend to want to fly off the spool. As far as the "I wasted time I can never get back" geezem...you were still out fishin ! Relax, Its supposed to be fun. ;D

Im looking for suggestions on what to replace it with on that setup. Im a fan of lighter lines vs heavier/thicker lines.

Mark

fishing user avatarEastMarkME reply :

Anyone ?

Thanks Mark

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

The heavier Ultra Soft is still some of the most limp stuff I've used. I use 12 or 15lb for buzzbaits, cranks, and spinnerbaits. "Stiff" is not a word I would ever associate with it. Maybe you had a bad or old batch SD

fishing user avatarHammer 4 reply :

I would try the hybrid ultrasoft, I have it on bc and spinning.

Re: the coils popping off, am I to understand your putting this line on a spinning reel..? If so, and unless it a 3000 size, 12lb is likey to heavy...10 lb is about as heavy as you can go on a 2500..the 3000 should be able to accept the 12lb ultrasoft..just a guess on my part.

Also, are you guys spooling it on right..?

You do realize that the actual breaking point of this stuff is much higher than the rated strength don't you?

You can probably fish 10lb YZ or PLine and have a higher breaking strength than the 12 lb mono that you're using.

fishing user avatarsweet daddy reply :

If you have money to waste buy pline, and yozuri. Dont get up I disagree when I sport the told you so look.

Well tons of the members here use both lines so we all must be doing something wrong. What line should we be using?

You have made your opinion heard once already in this thread. Further more, I do not even remotely begin to understand you when you say the "hype on stuff over 8#" I have fished these lines in 10 and 12# and they are both great.  Now please either offer some constructive responses or stop trolling this thread.

OK, Line Expert, What line should I use?

If you're going to knock 2 of the most popular lines in use, then be prepared to offer an alternative.

This is just like the post you made where you knocked the dual braking system in use on BPS reels but you never stated why it was bad or offered any other choice.

Your comments have no merit and even if they are just your opinions its no reason just to bash other peoples choices.

fishing user avatarkikstand454 reply :

i run 10,12 and 15lb yozuri hybrid on all my rigs and 8lb ultrasoft on my spinning reel and ive never had a single bad thing to say about it. its strong and smooth and has very little memory in the grand scheme of things.

i used to fish what i consider the best mono out there.... big game... and hybrid kicks its rear in every way.

imo if youre not goin to spend REAL money on super custom line and off brand elite pro stuff.... this is a great alternative.

i will not be changing lines anytime soon.

well...hahah... except that i like the berkley flouro and power pro braid of course... ;D

great comparison and write up!!!!!!!!!

If having lost $7 on line that you didn't like is that big of a deal to you than maybe you should not be fishing guy!!!

fishing user avatarChiCityBasser reply :

I primarily use spinning rigs and at the suggestion of RW I also use Yo Zuri Ultrasoft but went to big on my setups also with 10# and had many of the memory issues. After he suggested 6-8# for the spinning I went with the 6# and haven't had those issues.

I also use P-Line CXX in the 8# version with no problems on my spinning gear. I also now spray them with the KVD line & lure conditioner just as a bit of an insurance policy and no issues.

My B/C pretty much all has braid on it with one setup having mono

i love the expert advice from both of these guys

line is like all other fishing products----try them, if you like it then use them.

Sorry man, but the Yo Zuri and P Line are far from 2 of the most popular lines in use.

Regular nylon monos in all of their varieties are much more popular.  Trilene XT, XL, Big Game, Stren.

Power Pro, Sufix, Fireline, and Spiderwire braids are also probably more popular than these.  Yo Zuri isn't even widely sold in retail stores.

I'm not saying that the lines are bad (haven't used them), but they are most certainly not the most popular lines in use.

I was referring to lines in use by a lot of posters on this forum, I see these 2 lines referenced a lot in posts on this forum.

I was not implying that they are the absolute 2 most popular lines in the fishing world.  I will try to be more clear next time.

A meaningless poll.  I don't care what is more popular, most recommended, etc.  All I care about is results.  CXX gets them for me.

One vote for CXX.

;D ;D

But seriously, I trust the opinions of many of the members on this forum. I think this is a fairly knowledgeable and discerning consumer base so if a product is preferred by many of the members than I think it is probably worth looking at.

As JFrancho said, a meaningless poll.

I also misread your post.  Forget I even said anything!

Trilene XL, XT, or Big Game for me.

fishing user avatarSimonDM17 reply :

I'm currently using 6lb hybrid as a leader for finesse applications, 20lb as a leader for heavy cover or big baits, and running 12lb ultra soft on my crankbait rod.

I LOVE the 12lb ultra soft, and I have yet to experience one breakoff with either the US or the hybrid.  the US casts wonderfully on baitcasting gear.

When i get my swimbait setup going in the fall, i'm probably going to spool it with 20lb hybrid, so i guess i'll see about the casting issues then.

fishing user avatarrubba bubba reply :

The CXX is on clearance at TW; so you get it for $7.88 (in a couple of weights) AND you get 20% off.  In case anyone wants to pick up some.  Not all weights but a few.

fishing user avatarI.rar reply :

i fished the 6lb cxx on my cardinal 801 spinning reel yesterday. while it does have a little memory even after some ardent line conditioner , it is very smooth and has excellent castability (new word?). i didnt catch anything so i cant comment on that part but overall im happy with it.  :)

fishing user avatarBig Bait Fishing reply :

i find that yo-zuri (6 #) sinks way to much as i was using it for fishing for bluegills and i was making long casts . when i go to retrieve the line (with bobber) it drags the bobber down and a ton of slop with it . btw , i was using the ulta-soft . so i might try the stuff in 10# or 12# on my baitcaster . but there are alot of other lines that i think i would go to before the yo-zuri .... as far as CXX goes , i was using it for swim baits but recently went to a line that is much more managable , IZORLINE XXX !!!! this line is very strong also and you don't have the nightmare slinkyness of CXX . i only like CXX in 10# and under , anything else , no thanks ...........

fishing user avatarSfritr reply :

Great post

I personally don't care for the Cx but I may have had a bad spool.  My was twisty, it crimped and had too much memory for my taste.  I will definately try the ultra soft.
