Markh024 - 2015 Reports 2024

fishing user avatarMarkH024 reply :

This will be my collective thread for the year. Last year my thread amounted to hardly anything due to the lack of time on the water. I'm hoping to break that this year and have a little more pictures and video to share with you guys.

Last weekend was the Wisconsin opener. Friday we fished a larger lake in mid Wisconsin called Lake Puckaway.  This is a big walleye and pike fishery, so not the best bass fishing action.  Most of the reports I was reading from weeks prior to this said most fish were in the river system that flow in and out of the lake.  So, that is where we headed.  There were a lot of boats jigging for Eyes which made navigating a bit frustrating around stationary boats.  The current was fair and clarity was 1 foot at best.  Fishing was really slow and not many rods being bent from all boats around.  We managed a few largemouth, a couple white bass, and some scrappy catfish looking for a fight. Flat side square bills (6th Sense Crush 75x), Sieberts Fogy, and Siebert Swim Jigs caught all my fish here.  I couldn't get a sniff on a jerkbait, which I thought was going to attract a few Eyes...but no luck.  Bass where very tight to cover, mainly big rocks. I didn't run my GoPro here so just 2 quick pics of my big bass and a fiest cat.

The rest of the weekend was spent on my home lake. Weather was great in the mornings but became increasingly windy West to East all day, then dying off again in the afternoon/evening hours.  Water was a bit dingy but not horrible. 2-3 feet visibility depending on where you were on the lake. I was very surprised that the lake temps where already in the mid 60's. By Saturday evening, I was getting 67 degree readings. Most of the gear I lugged up was towards 55-60 degree water so there were some lures I wish I had that I didn't.  Finding the tight lipped bass was a challenge. They were jammed against any cover possible and we had to bang or skim the edges of that cover to get any kind of bite.  Siebert Fogy (lost 3 to pike  :cry4: )  Shadalicious hollowbelly swimbaits, Swim Jigs, and Flat Side squarebills all picked up fish. Again, nothing on a jerkbait which I was pretty bummed about.  My big bass was 3lb 10oz for the weekend, with about 8 total on the weekend.  We had a lot of pike action as well, which is typical. PIcs and videos below.  Thanks for looking.

A buddy of mine fished Delavan on Saturday and he fishes there quite often. He said it was slow. 15 bass between 3 people only 4 being decent and a few pike. I'm leaving for Sturgeon Bay after work tomorrow. Hopefully I'll have something good to report.

I was out on Delavan all day saturday. it was fairly slow, I caught 13 and my uncle caught 8 with the biggest couple right over 3 lbs. They are up shallow in the typical spring spots, we caught most of them on senkos and dropshot, with a couple coming on a topwater frog as well.

Nice work, Mark!

fishing user avatarWill Wetline reply :

Mark, that was a good post and video. I really appreciate you not adding pounding rock music to the video!

Getting back to my reports, I made it up to Canada this year the week of June 20th-June26th for the musky opener.  This was my 3rd visit to Eagle Lake, Ontario since 2008.  I am absolutely in love with the place, not just with the fishing but the scenery and wildlife. This place is more amazing every time I go there.  Here's a few scenic pictures before I get to the fishing report.

Smallies-

Smallie fishing was pretty fantastic for the whole trip. I bagged around 60 smallies for the week but if my boat partner and I solely focused on smallies, we could have had 50+ fish every day.  Water temps were in the Mid 60's to low 70's by the end of the trip. We battled just about every weather element besides snow while we were there. The beginning of the week was pretty rainy and windy on and off, keeping us off the lake a few times.  We also were up during the start of the mayfly hatch which ignited a pretty good topwater bite by Wednesday of the trip.  The smallies we caught were all in the 16-19" range and 2.5 to 3.5lbs.  Great fighters but we could seem to land any big gals. I think most of the really big smallies were offshore recovering from spawn.  We hit the banks and big rock shelves in the 1'-10' range.  The last day there, I hooked into a monster smallie off our pier and got her wrapped up in some reeds which she was able to unbutton herself. It was a heartbreaker, but an excuse for me to go back next year!  Enjoy the videos and pics.  A few small musky and walleye are mixed in there.

Musky-

We did really well for the musky opener. We moved quite a few fish and overall between 2 boats, netted 6 over 40 and another dozen under 40". Big fish went to the captain of my boat, at a 50" monster caught on a number 6 size bucktail!  My new PB was caught on the day we arrived, setting the bar at 46.5".  My big fish came from a DEPS 175 SS, flash carp. I caught another 41", 32", and a couple in the 20's.  The other boat we had with us caught a few 40-43" and a number of 30's. It was a lot of fun and most of the hot musky action started toward the end of the week when the waters were getting right to the 70 degree mark.  All the big fish were caught off rock slopes next to the main lake, with fresh vegetation near by (usually in a small cut bay or large full bay).  Here are some videos and pictures of the musky our boat caught.

I wanted to share this panoramic I took using my phone.  This was our view right from where we were staying. This was from one of the days storms pushed us off the lake for a bit, but of course I was fishing the point out here for smallies.  :eyebrows:

I highly recommend it. If you do go and bring your own boat, bring and extra prop and your wallet. This lake has a lot of submerged boulders and reefs. The guys I went with have been going for the past 15 years and they still hit rocks/reefs every single trip.  Dont let it deter you, it is an amazing place!

I unloaded my card every time I came in for dinner and after dinner.  I wasn't going to let that happen again!  I'd launch my gopro in the lake and forget about it if it happend again.

Looks like an awesome trip

Been a while. Not a lot of fishing for me this year but I have a new home and a nice pond right out my door to fish in. I tried out some new swimbaits. Picked up one on a G2 Shellcracker and another on a GC Jointed Claw. My kids got to see the one on the Claw and we're thrilled. Next spring it's go time for them.

Sweet time with the boys. It won't be long and they will be asking you why they can't fish more often.

nice man!! awesome that you got that across the street, easy and convenient way to teach the kiddo's...now scratching that itch is just a country mile cast away!!  :eyebrows:

fishing user avatarMarkH024 reply :

Snuck out again for an hour and a half today. Threw around a swimjig but only landed this fat girl. She was 3lb 5oz on the Accu-Cull digital.  Other than that, it was a ghost town. Warming temps this week should help for next weekend.

fishing user avatarFrog Turds reply :

sweet man!!  so how your workin that gill bait?  is it a floater, slow sink or what?

fishing user avatarMarkH024 reply :

Thats a slow sink in dark male color.  I was throwing it with a steady retrieve as well as a stop and go.  The two fish I picked up seemed to hit on the stop and go, both tight to vegetation.  It was really windy yesterday and temps were dropping quickly.  One of the fish came off a weed clump about 4 feet from the shore, so it wasn't much of a fight.  I had a huge blow up when through a weed patch on a Jackall Gantarel but the fish missed completely.  It sounded good size, but never could tell how big it was.  I also lost my one and only Gan Craft Jointed Claw 178 in Gill color (very hard to find). I'm not even sure how but my line severed at the line tie on the bait and my knot was still in tact.  That was a painful loss, pretty bummed but that's fishing, right?  Those Mattlures Hardgills/Baby HG are freaking awesome in the water... I will definitely be getting some of the Hardgills in the bigger size.  The Baby is a nice snack size for the pond i'm fishing but for waters that have some potential, the bigger size would be my preference.

I have also been throwing these swimbaits on my new Champ 806SB.  What a sweet stick, just wish it was a cork handle.  I think i'm going to wrap the handle in X-Flock.  The rod is a bit much for a baby hardgill, since you can throw that bait on a conventional rod, but i was able to fish it on the 806 with relative ease with good casting distance.  The rod is rated 2-8oz and the baby HG is 1oz or maybe a shy under.

fishing user avatarMarkH024 reply :

Putting one of my brand new Mattlures Hardgill to work today before the ice shows up. It was chilly out there. My hands were hurting quick so its gloves time next time out for sure. Glad to see the fish are still feeding good. The first one had a nice fat belly.20151107_151026_zpsr8dvo9ar.jpg20151107_155613_zpsv70upr7f.jpg
