Lost my PB... 2024

fishing user avatarEGbassing reply :

Today I decided to try skip casting because I just could not get a bite. I made a few terrible skips, and then started to figure it out. After a while, I skipped one out near some cover and immediately hooked a dink. A little while later, I was about to leave and decided to make one last cast. Skipped it into some cover and something thumped it, so I set the hook. That fish fought like no other. I really was struggling to keep from being pulled into the water for about 30 seconds. I had mostly locked down my drag since I was fishing a jig, but that thing was pulling line like my spool was open. I had to tighten it down as much as possible in the middle of the fight just to slow it a little. It finally decided to swim towards the bank, and I just kept reeling as it got closer. It finally got about a foot off the bank and with one last enormous jump, through the jig at me and swam off. I know most of you won't believe me, but my honest estimate would be 13 pounds. My previous PB of about 8 pounds felt like a dink during the fight compared to that beast. Probably never would have landed him if he hadn't decided to start swimming towards me. Even with a MH/F rod and 40LB. braid. ;)

Don't sell yourself short. From your blow-by-blow description, I'm pretty sure that bass was at least a 20 lb-er. @OCdockskipper will confirm.

Is that sarcasm? If not, I apologize. It's just that everytime I post something that involves me catching a 4+ lb. bass, 99% of the comments are people saying it didn't happen, it probably wasn't really a good fish, etc. etc.

fishing user avatarNittyGrittyBoy reply :

Yeah I was just cutting up, but I did like your story! I don't doubt it was a grown un though keep after it.

Now that you know that fish is there your always gonna fish that pond for her

Yeah, there are multiple potential PBs in that pond. I've landed several in the 7 pound range, and my PB was about 9 pounds. Also, trust me, I didn't exaggerate the fight at all. It really did fight harder than any fish I've ever hooked. I thought I'd fould hooked a carp for a while, and then it jumped...

fishing user avatarTroxBox reply :

I lost my PB about a month ago. A possible double digit. Almost got it to the boat before it saw my ugly mug and took one last HARD run, snapping my 12lbs line like it was nothing. It was totally my fault. I should have tested the drag before I even picked up the reel. It was also during a tournament which made it that much worse...

Anyways, after about 30 seconds of shaking my fist and cursing under my breath, I turned to my co-angler and said "Dang Hybrids!", then went on fishing again. I just wanted to pretend that I never saw it. The worst part is that when it got close enough to see, my co-angler was too busy stumbling for the net to catch a glimps. And with that being said, I'm sure no one believes me either lol.

It's all part of the game... and in the end, all it did was feed my hunger for the sport.

I think we all have lost that monster a time or two ,it is defiantly disapointing ,but now you know that she is there, and trying to get her again is very exciting. hope you land her and show us the pic's

Yeah, I'll try. That pond is full of monsters so I'll definitely land a few more 6+ pounders there. (even if I never hook that one again) :)

Oh. 8 - 9 was my estimate. Both times I said "about". I didn't get a weight, just an estimated length before releasing it.

fishing user avatarOCdockskipper reply :

There should be an event in the Elite series where all of the anglers come back to the dock at the end of the day and tell Trip Weldon what they estimate the 5 biggest fish they caught that day weighed.

fishing user avatarShane Y reply :

My "what would have been" was a least 10. This was probably 20 years ago.  I was a kid about 10 years old and showing my sister how a crank bait worked. I was dragging it back and forth in the water while standing on the dock at a public boat ramp. A giant bass came up and flat out inhaled  that sucker. I didnt know much about drag and had it locked down tight. When I set the hook........POW !!!  Line broke. It was a hoss for sure.

Wow. When I started fishing I didn't know what drag was. Luckily I didn't hook anything. Probably would've broken off. ;)

fishing user avatarkenmitch reply :

Don't you just hate it when the big ones are only in it for a short game of keep away. Not sure how much she weighed in the end but it sounds like she's got the game down to a science. Most of the time they'll get scared and spit it out farther away from their opponent. Seeing how she cruised right on up to you and stared you in the eyes before spitting it out reinforces her dominance and also let's you know you hooked a master of the game. If your lucky you'll get another chance at her in the future.

The big ones are always she's for the most part as the males don't tend to grow that large.

haha, yeah. Wouldn't be surprised if I hooked her again sometime because it's a pretty small pond.

I'm not gonna BS on it... there are some big bass out there! Personally I've never seen any over a pound in my area, but I have gotten a bite or two that I know was well over a pound and  lacked the skills/timing to hook it. T=You know it's there. So keep trying and pull that hawg out of the water!

Dont stress it, I have lost so many giant fish this year its unbelievable. Lost my PB largemouth and smallmouth. And some giant fish at the mississippi.

I believe you, because I did the exact same thing with a stripe bass that looked like it was as big as a person and nearly got hit with the rig when it slingshotted off of its mouth. It also broke the levelwind on my reel. It happens. You’ll get the next one.

fishing user avatarOCdockskipper reply :

That's important when you are trying to land that big one.  Like yesterday, I hooked this bass, fought him for over 6 hours.   All of a sudden, he jumps clean over the boat.  Broke my rod & I had to tie the line off on the mumble, mumble, mumble.  Left me out there with nothing but a paddle.

I hooked my pb when I was 4 years old. I'm 27 now, still haven't landed him yet.

It's probably a catfish....Bass don't live that long.

Thought I had a new PB today. Turned out it was an 8lb channel cat:crying-baby-2:

Personally, I really don't mind a good fish getting off as long as it gave me a good fight. Heck, I let 'em all go anyway although a photo is always nice to have.

A week ago I thought I had a tournament in the bag with a monster bass, then saw that it was a Muskie. I was so mad. Released it without a picture, angry. Then realized I was an idiot and that was my first Muskie ever and I should have gotten a picture and appreciated it.
