I have only been fishing once this year, and none last yesr due to health issues with my father (hes recovered foe the most part, thankfully). The one time I did go I was put to the test immediately to see if I still "have it", was bluegill fishing with a bluegill rig, and low and behold, the first fish I caught was a bass. It put up quite a fight and upon landing it, I celebrated like a little kid. Obviously it is no 7 lb linker, but I am sure it was at least 12 inches. I put him back in the water after I took a couple photos, and in my glee, I forgot to measure it to see if it was indeed a keeper. Ill post a pic or two, and let you guys see id you think it would have mwt the 15 inch requirement or, if I fell short. Or well I would have, but unfortunately the file aize was too big.
I will say I definitely couldn't wrap my hand (and I have fairly large hands) around the girth of the fish in front of the dorsal fin. And judging by the size of its mouth, swallowing prey such as 5 or 6 inch bluegill should be no issue for that fish.I know its hard to say without a picture, but sadly, file size was too big to upload, even after cropping the pic.
Uhh!!! where the picture?
10lbs exactly. Lol just kidding! Your first bass is a great accomplishment, it gave you a great fight, and you let it go. Awesome! Try reducing the file size and then posting it. And it's great that your dad recovered.
Upload the file to a site like imgur.com or tinypic.com and then post the link here
You could also use Phatch which is software that will do a ton of things to a photo.I use it all the time to make photos more web friendly.
Photobucket has been my old stand-by for years.
There we go. Like I said, no giant and probably not even a keeper. But being as it was my first fish on my first fishing trip in two years, I was happy to take it. Especially on a bluegill rig.
I am only guessing at 13.5 in. maybe push 14"
Nice fish !
I would definitely give him 15 inches
Definitely 12-15 inches....
Ting Ting ... You think it's 15" ?
I hope it is. I tend to be bad at overestimating though.

Hey man, when your telling the story its as big as you want it to be lol....
He definitely gave me a good first test upon my return to the fishing hole. 6lb line and a steel brim hook, that was fun.

Lol true, but I do wanna be honest ans be careful not to overestimate. I had someone tell me I was lucky to push 12" on that one.

he's over 13 but not over 16
To quote my old uncle "Dudley", My favorite fishing partner and philosopher, " Every deer you harvest, every fish you catch and every kid you teach how to hunt and fish is a trophy" Man, I miss his wisdom. A campfire, a splash of sippin whiskey and a new day tomorrow.
as long aa he makes 15, that makes me very happy, even if it is by a mere eyelash. On 7/29/2014 at 9:44 AM, Weld said:he's over 13 but not over 16
That fish ain't close to 16" but next time use fishing line and measure, then when you get home get out the tape and measure the line.

Alright now, talking Phil, Hunt, Fish, campfire,
And my personal Fave, Old Forrester! Sippin!
Hey u wanna going fishing? Lol!!!!
I've caught a lot of largemouth in that general range this year, and I would say its in the 13-14" range. The first picture makes it look bigger than the others.
And by my state's regulations, they want us to measure them with their mouths closed and tails slightly pinched (for reasons I dont know, but ill follow their guidelines).
Provided you aren't holding him way closer to the camera (which it doesn't appear that you are), the fish looks like it's about as long as you are wide at your chest. Might be able to measure yourself and get a general idea of how long it was.
I've seen way smaller looking fish bump 15" in a tournament, wouldn't be surprised at all if that fish was 15.
sweet, thanks for that info. Since im just more of a guy who throws live bait out there content qith whatever may bite (unless its a gar, yikes them teeth) ill happily take a 15 inch bass any time I can get it.On 7/29/2014 at 1:50 PM, Bluebasser86 said:Provided you aren't holding him way closer to the camera (which it doesn't appear that you are), the fish looks like it's about as long as you are wide at your chest. Should I ever become a competent baas fisherman, Id of course have to have a larger catch to celebrate.
The beauty of just baiting up and throwing out there is that you never really know what you are gonna get, ans the possibilities make it that much more thrilling, for me it does anyway. Just goes to show when even fishing for small fish such as bluegill, be ready for surprises, such as that. In fact I caught that as the first fish, it was a few minutes later when I caught the first bluegill. I was more than content just to catch a few bluegill, but in my mind I said to myself "man wouldnt it be nice to catch a keeper size bass", and sure enough perhaps I did. The more I look at it, the more I think it managed to squeeze in just enough to measure "15. Sucker put up a heck of a fight on that bluegill set up.
Here was the last bass I caught prior to the one in question in this topic. I think I did better this last time around. Lol

Did you bring a tape measure this time?!?
Bass pro has a really nice tape you can carry in your pocket, was a couple of bucks. You can also measure the handle on your rod, for instance the handle on the rod I use the most is 12" so from there I can estimate if I don't have my handy dandy tape measure in my pocket. On the boat I have a ruler on the gunal.
Nah not this last time, that trip was kind of an impromptu trip so I grabbed my rods and tackle box rsther quickly and left without even thi king to bring a tape measure.
If you don't have a tape measure lay it on top of your plano box. If you are lucky enough to find a box with a tape measure on it that is even better. Helps with estimation when you don't have a tape measure or scale.
Wish there was a way I could take a picture of a tape measure pulled to 15", superimpose the bass into that pic as evenly as possible with the tape measure. Classic OCD symptom, but dang it, id habe loved to known whether or not that was a keeper by alabama game and wildlife standards (15" minimum for largemouth, smallmouth, and spotted bass).
Eyeball test of sorts I suppose, wish I would have had a tape measure on hand for a definite measurement.
Maybe this will give an idea of how close it csme to 15"
Use a dollar bill or any valued bill. A us bill is 6 1/16 inches long, so just say 6 inches. If you fold the bill in half then its 3 inches and so on. This will get you close enough. But note its not a legal way to measure a keeper fish.
