I lost a 10 pounder in mid air today... I was flipping when he hit. I set him and it was on. I knew he was big.. Very big.
When I got him up on top by the boat instead of reaching for him or grabbing the net which was right at my finger tips I lifted him up. He was so heavy the hook just tore out of his flesh and I watched him fall into the water.
I've never had a problem like this.. I've never caught a 10+ pounder. Awful feeling.. I'll never forget it.
you have to remember that big fish have thicker jaw structure than 2-5 lb. bass , if you get a good hook penatration through cartilidge , you can boat flip them but i usually lip them , i guess you got a lesson learned . sorry to hear you lost a good fish
Once they get much over 4 pounds they either get lipped or netted. I've seen way too many big fish lost by lifting them with the line.
I only boat flip dinks, any bigger and I'll either lip them, or get them in the net just to prevent this.
Boat flipping double digit bass?
Hahahahahahahaha
a 10+ pounder flipped? i might have slapped you if i were there with you....
a fish of that size could have put you in the record books in many New England states....
Bass usually come in three sizes ~
There's the Small ones.
Then there's the Medium ones.
And then there's The One That Got Away.

I was so worried about loosing him I took the short cut.
Lesson learned.
Its all in the momentum, I boat flip DD bass all the time... I can kayak flip them too if I'm careful
I know how it feels. The Missouri largemouth record is 13 lbs 14 oz and I lost one a couple of weeks ago that had to be pushing 15. I was fishing a pink rattletrap and when I pulled her to the surface and tried to lip her. I put my whole hand in her mouth. Alas, she broke free and disappeared into the depths, almost pulling me out of the boat. I nicknamed her Dottie and will be posting a video of the pond/lake she inhabits in the not-to-distant future.
I re-live it and re-live it and re-live it. Ouch!
I know where he live's................................ I'm going after him Saturday.
One of the lessons I had to learn early when I started bass fishing, lost quite a few nice ones in a short period and that cured me of flippin big fish
I have a simple rule.
If I have to play the bass while I'm reeling it in, I lip it.
Big fish do a really good job of shaking a jig out of their head when they are "hot". Sometimes it's better to try and swing them instead of giving them another chance to throw it. I don't know about doing that with a 10lb fish but I do know that I would probably do something way worse if I hooked one that size!
Gotta stay after her now!
I just about always lip fish. You can boat flip all types of fish, just make sure to never grab the line. You need the give in the rod so it doesn't tear out of their flesh.

Ya, 01's, 02's and 03's. Never a DD that starts with a 1 though.

lol, I hear ya brother!
I flip fives with ease.. This bass was just to heavy and strong. Plus I only fought with it for 10 feet or so. It wasn't tired at all.. I didn't make it out there today. Hopefully tomorrow..

Ahhh man, let me first off say that I too tend to boat swing fish in the moment... I also fish out of a canoe and some swings are sketchier than others especially when they are in the 5+ range. Last night after I swung in a 5 my line snapped with the hudd still embedded in the top of the fish's face, with the fish in the boat at least. I know I would have been upset if that had happened mid-air losing a fish that is half the size that you speak of.
Keep at her,
She has to eat again sometime...

The winds are right today.. If it warm's up enough I'm going to her house. Rods, reels, line and baits are ready to go.
get her WPC! There's nothing I'd like to see more than you holding that sow!

Thx.... What I day it was. 20MPH wind, Cloudy and cold. I got snowed on for 5 minutes.. Not as predicted!
I got one two pounder and 3 good size (Snakes) picks... The lunkers were holding really tight. The water temp dropped 10 degrees in a week. water temp was 55. The reeds are turning red.. the Green is about gone. Lots of gray and brown cover.
I'll go back later in the week... I want his a-ss.
Welp tonight i was skunked by a pig who i think ive hooked 3 times now she sits about 6 feet deep inside a culvert pipe and i was jigging a trick worm down there felt some weight set the hook rod stayed bent over i knew i had it hooked and for the third time it jumps straight out of the water and shakes my hook. Very dissapointing

says the man who's PB is listed as between 5-6 lbs.
Currently a virgin bass fisher (well, I've fished FOR them... just haven't caught any) but any fish of decent edible size I'm usually gaffing, lost one slot size snook trying to pick him up by the line on the wall of a bridge. Sucker sat right there next to the wall teasing me. Never again! I bought a gaff that night! They're usually in the 15-20 lbs range for a keeper.
Been there, done that. Although it's hard to
know just how heavy they are w/o weighing
them
I've estimated two I've lost right at the yak,
and the other right at the net at ~8 pounds.
Stings when they're "the one that got away".
Especially when you swear they're laughing
at you as they dive back into the depths.
I was planning on going after that toad today. Woke up early to more of the same cold and very windy conditions.
All I could do was wait to see if it would get warmer and less windy. Buy one o'clock I knew it wasn't going to be a day of fishing. Lousy weather! Maybe tomorrow...

I was being sarcastic... Who says "kayak flip" haha

That's exactly what I thought, except for the K flip...was clueless about that
I'm going for that lunker tomorrow afternoon if the weather is at least decent... Last time out for her the weather sucked.. I got 4 bass though. One was near 5 pounds.
This video was a piece of the ride back to the ramp.
The weather was lousy again, I didn't go..
Maybe this week I'll go hunt for him.
Hoist a 10 pounder? btw, don't stand on superman cape or p!ss into the wind, if you ever meet a big dude called Jim, don't mess with him.
