Questions about Orvis Battenkill Disc Drag Fly Fishing Reel
Q:
Anyone use this in salt water?? Says sealed drag..
Answer: Yes. Used it in Alaska in the sand and salt. Worked flawlessly.
Answer: The reel does have a sealed drag, but I don't believe it is made specifically for saltwater. I know anglers that do use it in the salt, and they just make sure to break it down/rinse/dry after use as you should with any gear used in saltwater.
Answer: Hi there;
Q:
Anyone had problems with this reel I’ve had mine for a short time and it’s already hiccuping
Answer: Not that Ive seen. Its a decent reel for the money. Send it back to Orvis and theyll take care of it.
Answer: As other have said, this reel is known to be a very solid and reliable reel. I would recommend reaching out to Orvis and they should be able to help you out!
Answer: It is about the most bullet proof of fly reels. Send it back to Orvis. They will fix or replace. Call ahead for a return authorization.
Answer: No problems at all. Just back from Montana where it had a serious workout and it performed flawlessly.
Q:
Is the 7-9wt a single hand version or Spey version? It doesn’t specify.
Answer: Hi Garrett; This one is NOT the spey version. There are 2 specific sizes for spey rods which are: Item number UG2J7H 7-9 wt IV $189.00 and UG2J7J 9-11 wt V $198.00. Thanks for your inquiry. Breton's Bike & Fly Shop.
Answer: We just wanted to confirm that this was the standard Battenkill IV reel not the Spey version. If you are looking for the Battenkill IV 7-9wt Spey version, you can find it using Amazon ID: B06X152BBQ - Let us know if you have any other questions!
Answer: Single.
Q:
Considering this reel for a 5 wt. switch rod with rio switch chucker. does this reel have the line capacity?
Answer: For streams and small to mid size rivers, it should be plenty. The mid-arbor is a really good compromise between fast reeling and good capacity. I haven't seen my backing since the day I put it on.
Answer: I dont know this line. Orvis claims that with a standard WF5F line it will hold 100 yards of 20 Pound Orvis Backing. Much more if you use Gel Spun backing.
Answer: Hi ray; The battenkill disc reel would be perfect for this application. Remember that when loading your line use less backing to allow more room for a spey line which is longer than a standard WF5F type line. Breton's Bike & Fly Shop.

Q:
Does the reel come fish backing and float line?
Answer: Hi ;
Answer: Thank you for your mail. It does not. If you wish to have line and backing we can sell it to you at cost. Thank you
Q:
I have a 10’ 4 weight pole for midging is this the right balance reel or suggest differential Orvis reel please?
Answer: Hydros II or Battenkill disc II should do the trick.
Q:
How much backing will this reel hold?
Answer: It will depend on the Line and the type of Backing you will use. Orvis claims that with a 20 pound Orvis backing you can hold 150 yards with a WF3F, 125 yards with a WF4F and 100 yards with a WF5F Line. If you use Gel Spun Backing the amount increases at least 40%. I can not prove these statements as I use this reel with an Euro Nymph Line and most of the reel is filled with backing. I am talking about a Battenkill Disc II Reel (Line 3-5). The reel is quite smooth.

Q:
hola necesito para mano izquierda
Q:
Would the battenkill ii be too small paired with a 9’ 5wt?
Answer: No, it would definitely work well, though it would be rated on the lower end of the spectrum. The Battenkill II or Battenkill III would both serve you well.
Answer: I have mine on a 9' 5wt and am very happy with the balance and performance. Use it for speckled trout and Lady fish in Tampa Bay and shad on the St. John's.
Answer: I think you could get away with it. I currently have the III on my 6wt Orvis Recon rod and it’s my go-to trout setup. It’s a small reel. I imagine the II is a lot smaller. If you’re not fishing in situations where you are putting fish on the reel, I say you could do it. Preferred setup would be the III though.
Answer: It shouldnt be an issue. The difference in weight is 4.6 to 4.9oz..

Q:
Where is this reel made?
Answer: This reel is manufactured in China. The latest Battenkill Disc version is true to its heritage in looks and performance, but updated with the latest in design improvements and a significantly more powerful drag. The reel is built of 6061-T6 aircraft aluminum and is very durable!
Answer: Not sure.
Answer: (On Box) Made in China
Q:
Isn't the photo a spey version?
Answer: Good eye! This is the Spey Version. Special note................Both the Regular and Spey in size IV are not available until the end of January 2022 for the exception of dealers that may have some in stock. CGB
Answer: The photo shows both the Spey and regular version of the Disc reel but the drop down menu is for the regular model.
Answer: No, not necessarily. It's just the larger version (7-9wt). I had the same question when I bought mine (BK II - 3-5wt), which is lightweighted on both sides. The larger weights are solid on one side. It's not clear from the picture because if you click on BKI, II, III or IV, the picture doesn't change. BTW, I LOVE this reel. It's my third one.
Answer: It looks similar but is not a Spey reel. I have it on my Orvis Clear water 5/6 wt 9’ rod and it works beautifully
Answer: No it is not.
Product reviews of Orvis Battenkill Disc Drag Fly Fishing Reel

Amazon Customer : Alright
Alright
Jersey Mom : Amazing quality.
I was worried about the “memory” in the line for not having a large arbor. So far not even waves in my line, and I have a beautiful compact reel. Love the quality. Definitely feels like it will last for many years to come.
Pete : Great reel.
Compares with reels costing much more.
Levi R. : Worth the price???
Great product at first then I started having trouble with it waiting for orvis to call me back to hopefully get it repaired definitely big let down for the price

William R. Meredith : Low profile light weight great quality reel for the price
I love this reel! I bought it to replace a large arbor reel that did not balance well with my 8 ft 5 weight rod. The quality is outstanding. I love the fact that you can order additional reel spools at a reasonable price. That will be my next purchase. Drag is excellent. I was going to purchase the less expensive version till I read review about the drag. That was a very good decision. It may cost 60 dollars more, but when you consider that this reel will last a lifetime it is a very good investment.
Joey agro : Orvis
Great reel.
Matthew Drew : Well made
I haven't fished with the reel yet as I only received it two days ago but it appears to be well made. Nice and compact. Complements my new glass rod well.
Deano : I love this reel
I love this reel. It's exactly what I hoped it would be. Light and easy to use with clean traditional looks and a must have for me it can work for either a right handed person or left handed equally as well. Easy five star recommendation!!!
