Lightweight C-40X Construction The body, side plate and rotor of the Helios SX are constructed of Okuma C-40X long-strand carbon fiber. Where graphite reel construction utilizes powder suspended in resin, C-40X uses strands of carbon fiber that become interwoven thousands of times. The necessary quantity of resin is lower, and finished parts are both more precise and deliver superior strength. Parts constructed from C-40X carbon fiber are 25% lighter and 50% stronger than their graphite counterparts. C-40X construction is also completely corrosion-free. | TCA: Torsion Control Armor At the back end of the reel and including the reel stem and foot is Okuma Torsion Control Armor. This unique design anchors the reel body within a wide yoke. Under stress, this wide footprint virtually eliminates flex and twist. Furthermore, it maintains a firm connection between the internal gears. Under load, the main gear of a spinning reel wants to push outward. By firmly stabilizing the body from the exterior, positive gear connection is maintained throughout the life of the reel. | CFR: Cyclonic Flow Rotor On the Helios SX, the full rotor system is ported to an extreme level. Instead of guarding against water intrusion, the Cyclonic Flow Rotor focuses on evacuating water from the system and drying the reel out. The shape of the rotor envelopes the system in a circular airflow. By simply using the reel, water is driven from it and accumulated moisture dried. In rainy environments, the rotor system dries faster than a traditional design when both are put into dry storage after a wet day of fishing. | RESII: Rotor Equalizing System The RES II System stands for Rotor Equalizing System. This second-generation RES System incorporates a computer-balanced weight precisely placed in the rotor. This weight allows for precision balance and eliminates all spool wobble for perfect alignments and smooth cranking. |

product description
The cyclonic flow rotor was designed to create a cyclonic Airflow, which significantly increases air flow through the ported rotor. Allows for a much faster drying time if the reel becomes wet, minimizing corrosion possibilities throughout the reel. The torsion control Armor design is made with Okuma C-40X long-strand carbon fiber technology. This not only makes the reel lighter, but also makes the reel extremely rigid which reduces twist and torque and keeps the internal parts in perfect alignment. Gear ratio 5. Weight. Drag. Helios SX spinning reel has 8 high performance bearings and 1 Rolling bearing with a cyclonic flow rotor. 0:1 with a 7. 2 oz.

Why is the smaller, 20 size ,reel so much more expensive than the 30 and 40 size reels?

Q:
Thinking of this for use with a 9 foot ML rod in the surf...what size and will it survive getting salty?
Answer: For a size it depends on your preference, but on a 9 foot ML 5000 series would be my preference. If in salty use, wash down with fresh water ASAP when done. Don’t submerse in salt water at all. Always wash at end of day with plenty of fresh water. Hope this helps.
Answer: I'd go with a 6000 for line capacity. And holds up great in salt. Just rinse well. Great reel
Q:
Would this fit a penn 12ft and what reel model would you guys recommend
Answer: The HSX 40s will fit but you would probably be better of with a 55 or 65 size reel. I would suggest checking out the Azores Z-55s or Z-65s . The larger size reels will balance better with a 12' rod.

Q:
Is this for saltwater fishing?
Answer: I have used it with 20 lb. power pro braided line and fished mostly inshore on the gulf. I have caught Red Drum up to 35 inches and the reel responded great. The gears handled the big runs a larger red fish will initially make.....very happy with my purchase. Very smooth reel.

Is this a good fit for the Abu Garcia veritas 6’6” medium/fast action spinning Rod?
Answer: The HSX-40 is a good size if you are using line heavier than 8 or 10 lb. mono. If you are using braided line, you can go down to a size 30 reel since braided line has a much thinner diameter.
Answer: I have never tried that specific rod. I have this reel w/ 4lb mono on a kastking 6'6" with those same specs tho. This is a nice, lightweight but well built reel. Handled 1-2 rainbow in the Mammoth Lakes. I've taken it to the pier at the beach and gave it a light rinse off after

Q:
"i have a G.Loomis 6 ft, Light carbon rod, 8-10 lbs, fast action, whick okuma spinner reel is suitable to pair with this rod?

Best model for stealhead?

I definitely recommend it.
Answer: 20 or 30
Q:
Is it normal for the bail being unable to be opened when it is on the handle side? Or is my reel defective?

Answer: Yes. the Helios HSX reels can be used in both right and left hand retrieve.
Q:
Can anyone tell me what size this reel is?
Q:
What size rod would be a good fit for the hsx-40s reel?
Answer: A 7' medium to medium heavy rod would be a good fit for the HSX-40s reel.
Answer: I use this reel with a Heavy rod but a medium heavy can be a good choice also
Q:
Would the HSX20 work with an ultralight rod?
Answer: It would make a great match for an ultra light rod. I use the HSX 20 and the ISX 20 reels for ultra light reels with 2 lb line for mini jigs. I usually fill the spool about half way with braid or thicker mono then top it off with about 125 yds of 2lb line.
Answer: It should. That's how I fish mine. 6lb test braid. 1/16 to 1/8 oz lures in skinny water for seatrout and redfish. on a 7ft light fast rod
Answer: Yes i bought it for use with a ultralight rod and it works pretty great! I currently have it on a 5 and a half foot rod, would cast much easier on a longer one but is very handy on a short one too. I would recommend using 10 pound braid with a floro leader on a shorter one though.
Answer: It should work fine. I have mine on a med light rod.
Answer: Yes, it will work great! The rod is every good and light weight!
Q:
If I was going to use this reel for casting 1/8 Oz jig heads for walleye would I get the 20 or 30?
Answer: 1/8oz would cast better with 6lb to 8lb test. If you use 8 lb, I would use a line such as Magnathin. The 20 model will handle both nicely. Depends how light you want to go. If you are after bigger Walleye...the 30 with 10-12 lb.
Answer: If you are using 6lb , i would go with the 20. If you will be using 8lb line or heavier the 30 would be the way to go.
Answer: I’ve only used the 20 and I love it
Answer: Better the 30
Q:
Would the 40 series be enough for catching 30-40lb bull red drum? I would normally use a 4000-5000 series reel for this
Answer: Definitely. Match it to the right braid/leader and your set. Go get em!
Q:
Need a reel for a 38” rod? 20 or 30? All species will be fished for. Will be using braid as well.
Answer: Braid is beuno! Dont know what you mean by 38" rod? Very short unless your ice fishing. Action, taper ect. if that's the case go 20!
Q:
how do you switch the handle on the helios sx 30
Answer: Remove the handle screw cap on the opposite side from the handle. Once you remove the screw cap and handle, install the handle on the opposite side and tighten down the screw cap.
Q:
Does the reel come with an extra spool? If not, how can I get one? Thanks.
Answer: This reel only comes with one spool. You can order a spare spool direct from OKuma by calling 1-800 GO-OKUMA
Answer: You can order one directly from Okuma as no additional spool is supplied.
Answer: The only spool that comes with it is the spool on the reel. Contact Okuma customer service and ask about a replacement or spool that would fit. Some spools that are the same series as in 20 series 30 series 40 series may fit on the real and work for you.
Answer: It did not but is a great reel. Just a heads up, switching the handle over is doable but not as simple as other reels. Sorry i dont know more about the spool
Answer: This reel doesn’t come with an extra spool. You may be able to locate one on the OKUMA website.
Answer: No extra spool
Q:
I have a Dobyns seiarra 7’ med. for senco, jigs and Texas rigs what, size and gear ratio would you recommend ?
Answer: I would go with the 30 size. The 20 is toward the lighter side. The 40 works for bass fishing also if you are going to be fishing heavierline in thick cover or vegetation
Answer: I have not had a chance to use real yet
Q:
What country make
Answer: A company with headquarter in Taiwan, but manufactured most of their reels in China. The one I is made in China.
Answer: China
Answer: China
Answer: Japanise
Q:
How much 30lb braid can the 40s hold?
Answer: Most rod manufacturers recommend spooling your reel with 200 yards of line. However, this can put you in a pickle because most braided lines are sold in 150-, 300-, 600- and even 1,500-yard spools.
Answer: depends on diameter I can tell you it holds 330 yards of 10lb Diawa J Braid
Answer: I was able to put 150 yard 40lb.
Q:
How far will the bail rotate back if you crank backwards? The reels with the triggers rotate back to an internal stop. I assume this reel has zero m.
Answer: You are correct, the reel has an anti- reverse switch that is immediate, no backspin. Very well crafted reel but no bale trigger on this model.
Answer: The Helios reels have a one way roller bearing for instant anti-reverse. there is no backplay
Q:

Answer: This reel doesn’t come with an extra spool. You may be able to locate one on the OKUMA website.
Answer: No extra spool
Q:
Would the 40s be a good choice for a 7’ medium light ugly stik carbon?
Answer: I recommend a 30 on a ML rod and a 40 for M or MH. The 40 isn't a bad choice on a ML rod, but I'd go with the lighter 30.
Answer: I actually would go smaller. I had the 40 and I felt it was too heavy. Unless you really need the extra line, I’d go 2500 or 3000 due to them being lightweight.
Answer: A 40S would be fine on a ML Ugly Stick. I would prefer a 30S (a little smaller and lighter). Less weight IMO increases the sensitivity of the rod and even more so if you are using braided line (line does not stretch like mono or flouro). The lack of stretch has also increases my success of recovering snagged lures or hooks in trees or on the bottom. Braided line also dramatically increases the amount of line on your reel over monofilament or flourocarbon line (much smaller dia. for same strength). Using braided line also increases my ability for longer casts, little or no line memory unlike mono.
Q:
Can you switch this from left handed to right handed?
Answer: The HSX-40s reel can be switched from left to right or vice versa by removing the handle screw cap and installing the handle on the preferred side.
Answer: Yes you can switch.
Answer: Yes
Q:
I want a all around spinning reel that can handle trout, bass, and catfish what size should i get?
Answer: These are awesome reels. I have the HSX30 and mainly use it for walleye and smallmouth bass fishing. It works great and easily fits 150yds of 10lb braid. Not sure what species of trout you plan to target but with catfish on your list I’d go with HSX40 so you know you have a bigger reel for some heavier line. Although, I do think the HSX30 would work just fine.
Q:
Is the 20 no longer available or something?
Q:
Would the 30 be good for my ice rods all are 32 inches
Answer: If you are fishing line thicker than 8 lb mono, the 30 will be better. For 6lb and under I would go with the 20
Answer: Should be good.great reel!! Love it.
Q:
what is the best size for trout??
Answer: The smallest one they make, should be perfect.
Answer: Hsx 20 if that's the smallest.
Answer: The smallest one that they make.
Q:
Does the handle screw in to the body to secure it or is the cap opposite of the handle required to secure the handle in place?
Answer: The Helios reels feature a shaft that is secured with handle cap on the opposite side.
Answer: The cap is required it has male threads and screws into the shaft on the hand which runs thru the body of the reel and has female threads.
Answer: It’s a cap opposite of the handle
Q:
What size would be a good fit with a st croix mojo medium action 7ft pole?
Answer: the HSX 30 is the perfect size for a 7' medium rod.
Product reviews of Okuma Helios Lightweight Spinning Reel
rc : Great reel for the money
Very smooth and light weight
VilRuS : It's the reel deal
Smooth...smooth...smooth. This reel is the reel deal. I combined it with my Helios rod and it's a deadly combination. Can launch a #6 Rippin Rap farther than Uncle Rico can throw a football.
Paul Phelps : Great reel.
Smooth as silk, a little bit heavier than a graphite reel but very well balanced. This is a high quality reel and I recommend you give it a try.
Halen : ????????
I use this on my ultralight setup and I absolutely love it. Cast very well, very smooth, and keeps good tension when you need to set a hook. On top of that i feel like its very well constructed and pretty.
Merl Fullenwider : Nice reel
Casts smoothly and smooth retrieval..... Definitely a step up from my Ceymars
Rich Green : My son loves it
Bought as a gift. Very smooth, high quality reel that won't break the bank.
Amazon Customer : Very Nice
I decided to splurge on a new reel and chose the Okuma Helios after doing some reserach on fishing sites. Really glad I did. It's a definite upgrade from the $40 to $60 reels I was buying. It's smooth and fast. Already looking to pick up more Okuma reels for my larger spinning rods and baitcasters.
Some Guy Who Buys Stuff : Great reel at a good price.
Great multi-species spinning reel, have the 20 on a lightweight walleye rod, this is my 3rd Okuma reel (Ceymar, RTX-30) and while this one is the ‘chunkiest’ of the bunch for closing the bail (you do close the bail by hand, right?) it’s still miles better than any other spinning reel (Shimano, Plueger, Abu Garcia) that I own.
Really it’s a great reel, if you get one you won’t be disappointed.
rc : Great reel for the money
Very smooth and light weight
MattF : Hi quality fit and finish.
Arrived quickly, and it’s a beautiful reel. I haven’t fished it yet, but first impression is great. It’s well built, and very smooth.
Chris : Excellent reel with one exception.
The weight quality and performance is really excellent. The one problem I found is close proximity of the bail arm to the rod. I tried using this reel on a Cadence and St. Croix Rod and in both cases when holding the rod at correct balance point the bail hits my fingers upon line retrieval. The only option that works is choking up on the rod or holding the rod with 3 fingers behind the reel. Either way it doesn't feel right. I still definitely recommend this reel because it's durable, light and mechanically awesome. The design in my opinion is just .25 in. off from being perfect.
I am NY : Great fishing reel!
Paired this up with a St Croix Mojo Bass 7ft MH fishing rod. Mostly used with Texas Rigged soft plastics and some medium to shallow diving crankbaits. The combination is amazing! Super smooth cast and I can bomb my baits far into the lake when I am bank fishing. Retrieve is very smooth and quiet. I can't complain but the I can speak for the fish I've been landing at my local lake!
Daniel E. Dorry : Lightweight - smooth - easy to cast
Put this on an St Croix Eyecon and it's a dream for walleye. Smooth and precise drag. Easy to use. A + I used both 10 lb braid and 8 lb fluro .. both perform well
Billy : smoooooooowtha
looks nice; drag is sooooooooooo good ;6 lb. can haul a whale in with it!
Doug Blais : Smooth
Nice reel.
Scott Walters : Great reel
Great product
Daniel E. Dorry : Lightweight - smooth - easy to cast
Put this on an St Croix Eyecon and it's a dream for walleye. Smooth and precise drag. Easy to use. A + I used both 10 lb braid and 8 lb fluro .. both perform well
Robin Berg : Great reel
Bought for a friend and he loves it......I think he's buying me one for Christmas.
vinnie : Like the feel
Nice smooth reel light weight
Truth Be Told : Okuma
What can I say, Okumas are a very well put together reel. Reliable.
david : Buttery smooth and worth every penny.
This is my first Okuma reel and while its about $ 50 bucks above my normal reel price point It is worth every penny. Its lightweight, has excellent casting distance, reels in buttery smooth, true instant anti reverse with zero slop I may add (never had that in any reel before this one), and excellent drag. I have not caught anything throwing crankbaits yet but have caught many large walleye trolling and pulling these lunkers off the rocky bottoms in Marinette Wisconsin. Not sure if this is the right reel for trolling but it still performed excellent. Only knock I have is it scratches easily so if you want an expensive reel to look nice don't set it down where it can bump into other objects or equipment.
Brett R. : Works great
Good all around ultralight reel.
Amazon Customer : Super moulinet
Ce moulinet roule vraiment bien ,je m’en sert pour pêcher le pike et le musky d’en problème
Nikolay Lazarev : Handles fast rivers like a champ
First time using Okuma product.
The reel feels great. Love the handle...It is smooth but it could be smoother for 8 bearings. The drag is amazing. If you dial it in for your type of fishing it works flawlessly!
Fish on;)
Merl Fullenwider : Nice reel
Casts smoothly and smooth retrieval..... Definitely a step up from my Ceymars
AZ : Good for salmon fishing
Decided I want to spend more than 30-40 on a reel and decided to go with the Okuma 40s. Love it for throwing hardware for salmon here in the PNW. Drag is really nice, allows you to have multiple intervals that flow well.
Amazon Customer : Retrieves with ease and, pairs up with my st. Croix rod very well.
This is a great spinning reel. It handles bigger fish even though it is a 2000 size reel. Very dependable.
joshua : Five Stars
Great spinner! Half the price of a Shimano Stradic and feels really smooth. Casts very easy.
James S. Middleton : Smooth, strong and solid
I'd probably not have bought this reel if it wasn't on sale. A little too pricey for my use. On sale though was worth giving a shot. What a nice reel.
Mark Allen : Quality at an excellent price!
An excellent spin reel. No need to drop a bundle on a Shimano, I've fished both and this reel is just as nice.
Nikolay Lazarev : Handles fast rivers like a champ
First time using Okuma product.
The reel feels great. Love the handle...It is smooth but it could be smoother for 8 bearings. The drag is amazing. If you dial it in for your type of fishing it works flawlessly!
Fish on;)
Craig : Quality item; excellant price.
Have not put much time on these reels yet, but my older Okuma spinning reels have been going strong for 15 years (solid use each year; freshwater and saltwater). I reserved one star because this newer reel has (lightening) holes drilled in the spool that will allow saltwater to splash on the main drive shaft. The older design has solid spools so the main shaft was shielded. Since the new reel does not have a rubber seal on the main shaft-to-bearing entry, I'm concerned that salt water will cause an earlier death for this design.
Bryce : Awesome reel just wow!
Wow such a smooth real, just as light and smooth as my shimano stradic ci4 and for the half the price! Very awesome reel highly recommend, if you are on the fence about this reel dont be pull the trigger and buy you will thank me later!
goforbrokeu2 : Outstanding reel
Very light. Great drag. Using 10lb J Braid works great caught several 10lb plus redfish the first weekend of use.
VilRuS : It's the reel deal
Smooth...smooth...smooth. This reel is the reel deal. I combined it with my Helios rod and it's a deadly combination. Can launch a #6 Rippin Rap farther than Uncle Rico can throw a football.
Tom Y : Good quality reel.
I have been using this reel on my G Loomis Max Light rod and couldn't be happier. Reel is very light and operates smoothly.
Sue/Alex : 1 year later
1 year later, after catching bass and catfish, I took it to a saltwater bay. Landed a massive black drum @18lbs, with 20lb mono/20lb flouro leader. This was the smallest reel I had and it delivered. Gonna need a good rinse and probably seasonal component replacement in salt, but It did it.
Yves Labrie : Best ever bought
Good price-best value i love it
Phong Dinh : Great!
I have bought and used this reel for two months. It is very smooth and strong. I caught hundreds sun basses and crappies.
Jay Matsumoto : It is very good
It is very good
Glenn : Near Perfect Reel
Buttery smooth, very solid feel, casts like a dream. Would recommend to anyone looking for a great spinning reel that doesn't break the bank.
James : Grat real
Cast well and far
Paul Phelps : Great reel.
Smooth as silk, a little bit heavier than a graphite reel but very well balanced. This is a high quality reel and I recommend you give it a try.

Toki : Great!
