Questions about PENN Squall II Star Drag Conventional Fishing Reel
Q:
it does not have a level wind system ?
Answer: No, the Penn Squal 15 does not have a level wind. It is built for long casts. A level wind/wormgear would add a lot of friction when you are casting and limit the distances you could throw. The anti-backlash system is pretty much bullet proof once you get the tensioner set correctly for the amount of weight you are throwing. Sounds complicated, but it isn't. A 2 ounce sinker can be thrown 80 to a 100 yards, depending on whether or not you are throwing into the wind or against the wind. These are very good reels for the money.
Answer: Not on this model...
Q:
Gear Ratio for sql 40?
Answer: Go to Penn reel site the answer is there
Q:
Is the retrieve on the 15 fast enough to work a pencil popper?
Answer: Would assume that a "pencil poper" is a top water lure of some type, but I am not familiar with it. The Penn Squall 15's that I am familiar with, do not have level winds. It would be hard to do a fast retrieve using a top water lure with a Squal 15. Not saying it would be impossible. Reel is designed for long distance casting, generally using a bottom bait, with a 2 or 3 ounce weight.
Answer: Yes. However, my answer is based on having a full spool. This reel holds a tremendous amount of line. I recommend using a healthy amount of monofiliment line as a backer and to nearly "fill the spool" if you intend to ultimately fish a braided line. You can put 500 yards of 30# braid on this spool if you wanted to but, I don't recommend doing that.
Answer: I believe so
Q:
Is this good for catfish
Answer: This reel is good for any fishing if matched to the appropriate rod. I use it on a 12' surf rod and a 7' inshore casting rod.
Q:
Is this a real penn reel because I saw in the specs its manufactured by pure fishing
Answer: PENN is owned by Pure Fishing.

Q:
How much 80ld could I fit on this reel?

Answer: Derecha
Q:
What is the 3 pound and the 16 ounce options
Q:
Que version tiene mejor lance?
Answer: Yo lo tengo y tira muy bien.
Q:
Can you use braided line and still get distance when casting
Answer: Yes you can if you use a quality braid line. I have had a 153 yard throw (practice throw on land, measured eith a tape) with braid on a Penn Squall. I have never equalled that throw with monofilament line on the reel.
Answer: In my experience, distance with braided line is longer. But will take practice to master. If you are used to casting mono, the braid is different enough that your style will need to adjust a little to prevent backlash. Also, with braid, it's more important to use a shock leader.
Answer: I haven't tried it personally with my Squall, but the guys I fish with say you can cast farther with braid than with mono. The down side is that if you get a bird's nest, you're much less likely to get it untangled and there's a good chance you'll have to cut the line. With that in mind, I fill my reels mostly with braid, and then use a 100 yard top shot of mono for casting. That way I've got lots of capacity due to the smaller diameter of the braid, but the forgiveness of mono for casting.
Answer: Good to here that I love fishing with braded line. Thanks
Answer: Thank you much appreciated
Q:
what model is indicated as 16oz., is 30 really the correct answer ?
Q:
what is the size of the power handel i want to replace it.
Q:
What model number is the "16.0 ounce"? SQL__?
Answer: 30
Q:
Why is it so expensive for a very old model?
Q:
how long reel fit? and how many pound for load?
Answer: Its very strong
Q:
How is this reel at long distance casting?
Answer: It is very good. You do have to get used to setting the friction on the spindle so then it doesn't spin freely. you need to keep your thumb on the spool at the end of the cast, but I like the action better than a spinning reel. And it's good off the piers as well as the surf. And if you get sand in the reel you can rinse it with fresh water.
Q:
Country of manufacture?
Answer: My reel information says Penn Manufacturing Company Philadelphia, PA
Answer: The box mine came in says made in China. I love mine, I now have 4 of them. They are my #1 used reel on 7' rods for inshore bait fishing and on 11' surf rods.
Answer: The box for mine has made in China on it

Does this have a bait clicker

Answer: yes
Answer: Yes
Q:
Squall® ii star drag sku 1522168 model #sqlii15sdcslh = lh is left hand retrieve ?
Answer: YES, LAST 2 LETTERS IN MODEL # indicate LH for left hand crank
Answer: Yes correct
Q:
It has magnetic brake??
Answer: The 12 and 15 have the magnetic brake, the others have mechanical (centrifugal) brakes.
Answer: yes it has a magnetic control dial on the right side plus a clicker.
Answer: It does
Answer: Yes!
Q:
It’s this one left hand ?
Answer: Well, when you look at the Model Number, if it includes LH in the number, it is for left handed people. Typically. Most right handed people use RH, or right handed reels. Lefties use the LH reels. However, with spinning reels, that you cast with with more frequency, a right handed spinning reel has the crank on the left side. I guess nowadays, you should get the left or right handed reel that you are most comfortable with when casting and reeling in. Might have to compromise some.
Answer: The PENN Pursuit III is both left and right handed.
Q:

Product reviews of PENN Squall II Star Drag Conventional Fishing Reel
phaylath phoutthavong : Shipping was fast. Penn speaks for themselves.
I have gained a lot of respect for Penn. Ofc I've always known they were great products. Just a bit out of my price range. That was way before I started fishing heavily. I just steered clear from them. Until now. I love their nonlevel wind reels. That's all I seem to be buying nowadays. I'm more a Daiwa guy. Bias too. Most of my Daiwa purchase usually gets a 5-star rating. Unless shipping was slow. I do get boggle on items that get shipped late. When domestic. From china I get it. It takes forever and products are crap.
thomas walsh Corliss Walsh : Squall 40
Works great just right for most salt water fishing
Marcelo Piccolboni : good reel Penn SQL12

Reel is awesome. Needed it for my fishing trip to Alaska for salmon fishing. Easy to use and setup. Super smooth when reeling.
Jkrromero : Great reel, great price
Exceptional reel for the price. It's quiet and compact. The gear ratio works for my intentions and it just looks good. Currently have 50# braid backing w/ 25lb mono.

Description lacks detail. I needed one which evens up the line winding.
Raz : For the money it's the lowest option to get into this kind of reel and have a decent reel.
I wish it were metal, US made, but sadly now Chinese made and graphite. The spool is metal.
It comes greased and oiled for the average surf fisherman, slightly thick. This does help to control the reel.
You can clean it out, regrease with Rocket grease and either Rocket yellow or red oil and the performance will jump. You will have to fine tune a lot more over the standard oil it comes with and light weight oil like Rocket Red oil might not make it thru 2 fishing trips without needing maintenance again.
I found the grease, oil smoothed out after a little use. Also going from free spool to line take up, for lack of a better word, the clutch seem to take a little time to engage, a little rotating on the handle, you can feel it engage. I found this happens only when playing around with the reel in your hand, mounted with slight tension on the line retrieve pickup was instantaneously. This I don't believe is a problem, just an odd quirk you should be aware of.
The thing I dislike in the Squall 12 is the reel foot, it is small and width of the foot is too small. You are given a reel clamp, it is totally useless if you are using a long rod with a fat diameter, the screws will hit the rod coming off the foot. What was Penn thinking?

bc : awesome reel
Bought 2 of these reels earlier in the year to replace my Newells which finally gave out and I don't want to buy used parts to fix and old reel. I wasn't sure if they'd freespool but they do and are awesome. They're better than the Shimano Toriums I have and will replace them. I'm selling my Toriums and going Penn.
T. Castillo : Great penn reel!
Awesome reel! Penn reels ROCK!!! Use for surf fishing, holds up extremely well!
RidemCowboy : Amazing reel at an amazing price
Best level wind reel on the market for the price. At $100, 33% savings over the regular price, this is an absolute steal of a deal. Great drag, great casting ability with spool tension and magnet controls, great quality, and exceptionally smooth. Filled with 40# braid about 300+yrds, this real casts a 1oz lure almost 100 yards with no backlash. That's a 1oz lure! Can probably cast and spool off the line with heavier bait and gear? An amazing reel and at $100 you can't afford not to buy one!
caroline chiuminato : Penn reel

Brian S : Love it!
Love, love, love this reel! For boat applications, I usually go for an aluminum reel but for my pier, jetty, surf applications, I go graphite all the way. This is because for those applications, my gear is more abused. Dropping it on the rocks to grab a fish, in and out of the car, etc. And graphite doesn't scratch as easily as the aluminum so this way I keep my gear looking better. I hate buying a shiny new aluminum reel, just to have it all scratched up during the fist season. Many say this is just cosmetic and they're not worried about it but I don't like my gear looking beat up until it's old. New gear should look like new gear! Anyway, I was a little miffed because the Squalls have those gold colored metal trim rings on each side and they apparently scratch pretty easily. Mine did, the second week I owned it and I don't know when or how because I'd been really careful (hadn't purchased a reel cover yet). I thought to myself, if they're that easy to scratch up, and they're thin metal so they'll probably dent too, I wonder how much it would be to replace them. So I called Penn and those pieces are only 7 bucks. Cool, I'm not so worried about this little scratch but if they get really bad really quick, I can just replace them and since the rest of the reel is graphite and so durable, it'll look like new again. My only problem with this reel... SOLVED.
Otherwise, it casts further than my spinners out of the box with just a few adjustments, retrieve is smooth, fits well, lightweight, I LOVE IT!
Buy this reel, you won't be dissapointed!
Johnny R : These are excellent reels.
These are excellent reels....tuned right, they will deliver a 2 ounce weight, plus bait, a 100 yards without having to worry about back lashing the reel.

Bayliner2858 : Penn Squall15 is an excellent reel!
I was looking for a conventional fishing reel suitable for halibut and sturgeon fishing. I selected the Penn Sql15 for it's combination of features including compact size and line capacity. The reel is well designed and constructed, and has 6 bearings and is very smooth. It will serve my needs well.
Quinton : great real for kayak bottom fishing
Use it for bottom fishing for porgie, fluke, bass, and black fish. Love it
mjohnsp : Have had this real for several years now and I've got to say it's a really quality piece in the magnetic brake works fantastic f
Don't usually write Amazon reviews but I stumbled upon this reel on here so what the heck. Have had this real for several years now and I've got to say it's a really quality piece in the magnetic brake works fantastic for casting bait a long distance & not birdsnesting. I have a couple other casting reels and this has been my go to reel for the combination of distance and toughness. I've got a diawa millionaire tournament reel that although can out cast the penn every time but it doesn't have a clicker like the penn so this squall has been a better FISHING reel for me than the diawa. I've caught some big fish on this reel one of which being a 7ft hammerhead shark. The shark was an hour long fight on 15lb main line and I really thought I would have burned through the drag but the ol penn was good as new afterwards
Turen m. : Great experience and product

Amazon purchaser 11111111 : So far reliable
Been using it to reel in sharks with 150lb Brade
E Hamel : Smooth
Amazed by the distance of my cast. Smooth. Especially like the light weight.
e.s. kohen : Bird Nest Beast
I would not recommend this reel if you can get the Level-Wind version. Unless you are very experienced with bait-casters, I don't recommend this version. I ended up getting replacing this with the Level-Wind version.
Allen Turner : Great reel, super for surf fishing where casting is important
This is a great little reel for those on a budget and those who won't be using it much and don't want to spend a fortune on little used gear. I will be using it for surf fishing where you don't want a level wind reel that affects casting. It is well made. If you need a larger reel look at it's bigger brothers.

Wilfred R. Esporma : A great reel! Much better than I expected!
This is my first conventional non-level wind reel. Wasn't sure how I'd like it but so far, I'm very happy. Used it for the first time at the Santa Cruz pier two nights ago and was surprised at how easy it was to use. I have baitcasters for my bass rods and had a much easier time with this reel. I didn't even get a single bird's nest (knocking on wood). The reeling also was a concern but after watching Youtube videos on how to reel the line, I'm slowly getting the hang of it. I have Sufix Elite 17lb test line spooled right now but plan to switch to braid soon. For now, I can practice my casting with the Sufix and change once my progress is significant enough. I've paired this reel with the 10' Penn Battalion Surf Casting rod and am definitely in need of work with my technique. Practice, practice, practice, is all I need. Anyway, if you're on the fence on buying this reel, just get it. You'll love it!

Safari Man : This reel is junk! It broke the first time it was used. Never even caught a fish! Penn should be ashamed!
I really can't believe how poor of quality this real is. Maybe I got a total lemon, but this reel is just junk. First off, the line capacity is exagerated. It says that it can hold 600 yards of 60lb braid. I doubt that. I could not even get 400 yards of Berkely Trilene Pro 80lb braid on it. There is not to much difference in size from 60lb to 80lb braid, and Trilene Pro 80lb is thinner then most other braids.
The spool release lever on mine was horrible. It would stick in the locked position and I would have to really dig in and press hard to get to release. The spool tensioner was useless. The spool was so loose that when I release it, my monofilament leader would begin to unravel all by itself. The slightest tug on the line would cause the spool to spin freely causing a back lash. I am not talking about casting here. I had to keep my thumb on the spool the whole time it was free to keep it from unraveling. I cranked the spool tensioner all the way down and it did nothing all. I mean nothing! Honestly, you would easily backlash this reel just dropping a 1/2 ounce weight over the edge of your boat and letting it free spool.
Then there is the drag. I have had smoother drags on Zebcos! This drag is horrendous! Before taking it out for the first time I was setting the drag at 15lbs. The drag felt like I was dragging a bucket of rocks through a gravel pit with big bolders in it. It was rough, gritty and jerky, not smooth and steady like a drag is supposed to be.
So I took this reel out for the first time on the ocean and anchored my boat in about 10 feet of water near a reef (hoping to catch a shark). I was afraid to try to cast it (I have casted bait-caster reels for 30 years), so I just dropped it over the edge of the boat and I set the clicker. There was a slight current and even with the spool tensioner completely cranked down it was pulling the clicker. I had to lay the rod on the line so the weight of the rod would hold the line in place. Then came the first bite. It was a short pull, maybe 2 feet at medium speed. I picked the rod up and went to turn the clicker off and the clicker button fell off into my hand! I am not kidding!! This reel broke the first time it was used. It was never casted and never eve caught a fish!
Now maybe I just got a lemon, but that would mean that Penn's quality control inspectors are completely incompetent. So either way, it's is bad rep for Penn and means you cannot trust the brand. The MSRP for the reel is $150. I have Abu Garcia Amassaduer and Record reels that I have owned for 30 years that are still working perfectly that I paid less then $150 for. Shame on you Penn for producing such a piece of junk.
