Questions about Redington ZERO Fly Reel
Q:
Where is it manufactured?
Answer: Redington is located in the Pacific Northwest, Washington State. I'm not sure of the city. Rods and reels are American made.
Answer: Korea
Answer: Made in Korea
Answer: South Korea
Q:
What does spare spool mean?
Answer: A spare spool indicates that there is an extra spool. Each reel has 1 spool, which holds the line. A spare spool allows you to have a second set of line. This is important when you want to use a different line type or a back up line ready to go.
Answer: You can buy another spool for a spare.
Answer: A spool is the round part that holds the fly line. You can have extra spools for the same reel with different line for different situations.
Answer: Spare spool is the part your line is on, so you can have one reel with a floating line and a spare spool with sinking line, this way you can switch lines with out switching reels.
Answer: The spool is a part of the reel. It is the part that holds the actual line and can be removed from the reel. A spare spool is just an extra one. It can hold another line in order to fish a different weight line, floating, sinking, etc.
Q:
Im new to flyfishing. My uncle gave me a 8’6” rod for 5wt line. Is the 4/5 reel the best for that setup? Thanks
Answer: If this is the reel you’re looking for then yes. The 4/5 option would be the choice for you if using 5wt line. Super light and fun setup.
Answer: That reel would work fine.
Answer: It should work just fine. There are so many line options, don't get confused or over-think it.
Q:
Will the 2/3 reel fit a 3 line that is built a half size heavy? (sa frequency boost)
Answer: I have 2 of the Zero fly reels, one is loaded with 2WT the other with 3WT, both perform well, the loading is slightly different with the casts but not overly noticeable.
Answer: Sure it will, but you'll have to use less backing. Let's face it, with a 3 wt., we're not going to catch monsters, so less backing shouldn't be a problem.
Answer: I haven't tried it, but from the space left on the reel with a standard 3 wt I'd say it will accept more. You could of course always use less backing if need be.
Answer: Yes. I have an 80-ft 4wt line on mine.
Answer: Yes it can fit any 3wt line, the only adjustment you might need to do is to add slightly less backing
Answer: Yes. It might affect how much backing to add, but it will fit.
Q:
viene con carrete extra?
Answer: No, el carrete extra se compra aparte y vale 50 dólares aproximadamente
Answer: No, tienes que comprar uno. Con todas las líneas y líderes disponibles ahora, ni siquiera llevo uno.
Answer: You get what you see in the picture
Q:
what would be the recommended reel that is submersible? (i want to use it off a surfboard and it will get dunked several times)
Answer: Submersing the reel in fresh water will be no problem. If you are talking about saltwater, that’s a different story. Check directly with Redington, however I don’t think this would be recommended. Go with a reel that is designed for saltwater.
Answer: Salt water (like alakalai water) wreaks havoc on everything. With several years of salt water and alakalai lake float tube fly fishing, the best recommendation is to rinse everything thoroughly with water once you get home. Take the reel apart to clean and grease it after every couple of uses. Same goes for the line. What I did after 2 or 3 uses in salt or alakalai (Walker Lake, Nevada) was clean/grease the reel and strip the line and use line cleaner/dressing on it. If you go too much longer, the salt will start building up and cause corrosion and make the reel unsmooth.
Q:
What is the size/dimensions of the 3wt reel?
Answer: It's small - according to Redington - Product Dimensions : 5.5 x 5 x 3.5 inches; 5.6 Ounces .
Answer: 3” diameter and 2.7 ounces
Q:
Does it come with backing?
Answer: No. Reels come completely empty, unless there's some special deal going on. You have to buy backing and line. Many fly shops will spool it for you and put backing on it for free, if you purchased the reel/line from them.
Answer: No
Q:
Does it come with a reel case
Answer: It does come with a reel case.
Answer: Comes in a bag.
Answer: Yes it does. Let us know if you have anymore questions.
Answer: Yes
Answer: Yes.
Q:
Can I fit a 4 wt line on the 2/3?
Answer: Yes but if you’re gonna put 4 wt line on then get the 4/5 reel
Answer: Yes, but you’ll need to add more backing. I’d probably buy an Echo 2/3.
Q:
does this real come setup right-handed or left-handed retrieve?
Answer: These reels come setup for left hand retrieve, but they are easy to switch back and forth!
Answer: Mine came left handed
Answer: Left
Q:
Does it click when you retrieve or is it silent?
Answer: Hello,
Answer: It does click but is not your normal loud clicking. It is very low decibel.
Answer: It is a click and pawl drag, so it clicks. I've seen some of the reviews describe it as a very loud click, but I don't find it nearly as loud as some of the Hardy lightweight reels or one of the old Martin reels. I actually prefer a click and pawl reel, and this is one of my favorites.
Answer: Yes it clicks. I like the click becasue I know if line in going on or coming off the spool. I do a lot of bush whacking and fishing in areas with thick vegitation and this click lets me know if my line is snagged and stringing out.
Q:
Tell me about the drag system? Likes? Dislikes? I want to put it on a spare 3 weight rod.
Answer: There is no drag. There’s not much of a need on a 3 weight reel. Typically, the fish you’re going to get on 3 weight reel aren’t very big and don’t need a drag. If you’re even on be reel, finger the line or palm the spool.
Answer: For a 3 weight, it is just fine. This is a true click pawl reel. It has a palming rim, but most do not need a grab on a rod that light in weight.
Q:
Does anyone know how much backing and line to put on this?
Answer: 100 yards of 20lbs backing, Should still leave enough room for standard 80-90ft fly line.
Answer: It’s adressed in the owners manual.
Q:
Is the gunmetal color same as the sand color?
Answer: Redington does not make the Zero Reel in gunmetal. It is only available in Sand or Black.
Answer: Slightly different color.
Answer: I don't believe so.
Q:
Is the price for a complete zero reel or just a spare spool?
Answer: For the entire reel. 2/3 is small, so the price is less.
Answer: This should be for the full reel.
Answer: The reel
Answer: Complete reel
Answer: Complete reel.
Q:
Do any of the sellers offer an extra spool option .
Answer: They might, but with all the lines and leaders available now, there's no real need. With a double taper floating line on most of my reels, I carry the new sinking leaders with me and always some ultra-small split shot. A 9' sinking leader with a strike indicator where it joins the line and you're good to go.
Q:
How much does the reel weigh?
Answer: Off the top of my head, I don’t recall, but I do remember it was mentioned in the product ID or specs listed in the product ad. You should look there.
Q:
Is the dreamsicle is just a spare spool or the full reel. Bc i just purchased one and it was just the spare spool!
Answer: I received a complete reel but wish I had an extra spool.
Q:
Would this reel be good for a nymphing setup
Answer: Great question. It does depend on how large the fish you are nymphing are. This reel is ultralight weight and has a traditional click and pawl drag system. We love this reel for any rod that is 2wt -5wt. If you have any questions, please contact us at the fly shop at 937-434-8472. Have a great day.
Answer: It would be a good nymphing reel. It has no drag system so the tighter presentation works well.
Answer: Absolutely fine for nymphing. Generally when fishing with nymphs, it's the rod that makes a bigger difference. And consider what type of fishing-- Euro-style or tight-line nymphing? You probably want the longest rod you have (9, 9 1/2, even 10 feet). For regular small to medium river casting, fishing the chutes and riffles with strike indicators, you'll probably be fine with your standard 8 to 8 1/2 foot rod. This reel is fine for either types. I've had mine for about a year and am pleased with its performance whether nymphing, dry or streamer fishing.
Answer: I don't know why it wouldn't.
Q:
This reel is pretty loud out of the box. Does it get quieter with use?
Answer: No. It is a true click pawl reel and they are inherently louder.
Answer: With click and pawl drag systems like this reel it will be slightly noisy, that's normal for this type of reel. The offset is the light weight. I am extremely pleased with my reels, they have performed very well.
Answer: Does not get much quieter.
Answer: Not so far.
Q:
Is it both left and right retrieve
Answer: Great question. Yes this reel can be converted from left or right hand retrieve. The reel box does have a manual, or my pro-staff can professionally rig your fly reel with your correct retrieve. If you have any questions, please call us at the fly shop at 937-434-8472.
Answer: It says right in the description
Answer: Yes. The manual tells you how to reverse the spring.
Answer: Yep! It comes with the conversion kit
Answer: I really am not sure, I bought this for my son!
Product reviews of Redington ZERO Fly Reel
Mermis Family : Great reel for the money.
Finally got to use this Reel the other day. I was very impressed with the way it handled. It was clearly well thought out and I had no issues with it all day. It was very light and the 3wt was perfect for some of the smaller streams in my area. The only down side I can see would be this this thing dents easily. Because it’s aluminum if you drop it, it will likely have some damage. I haven’t yet but we will see how much of a beating this can take. My have to adjust my review in the future.
mathieu gaudreault : Quick delivery, item broke down in 10 minutes
The reel broke down and I have nowehere to claim the waranty. It was delivered quickly but since I cannot use it anymore it's prety much useless, it makes me regret using amazon instead of my flyshop...
cessna928 : Lightweight and sturdy! A great light rod option.
If you need as light a reel as possible, I needed a featherweight to match my 7’6” 3wt, this is 100% your best option. The finish is fine. The build quality is surprisingly clean and well designed. Without a doubt, this is my favorite lightweight click and pawl reel. I already bought another for my 5wt backpacking rod setup.
stan : Very round very clicky super lightweight
Still haven't taken it fishing, I just like the way it clicks.
September :
joefbtg28 : Love the weight, but does not hold up over time.
Love the weight. As some have said, I agree the clicker is a little weak and could sound a bit better. Works great on my 3wt creek rod. Balances my 7' 8" Echo Edge 3wt perfectly, which was my main objective.
Update:
Downgrading to 2 stars. After a few years the clicker has worn down to where the reel is unusable. Even slowly pulling off line will create a birds nest. Clicker is made of very soft aluminum and wore down even though it only interfaces with plastic teeth. The rim of the spool and frame also deformed a few times and needed to be hammered and sanded to correct the rubbing in the spool/frame fitment. Given the reel repair fee is $45 plus shipping the reel is not worth sending in for repair. I would avoid unless you are fine replacing the reel every couple of years. I would suggest purchasing something of higher quality that is worth warrantying like a Lamson Litespeed or Ross Colorado.
Royal T. Williams : super fast
Very good product with excellant service
Mark G. : Good C&P reel for the price (comparison to Orvis and Leland)
I've only had this out once since receiving it, but it's lite and simple; just what I was looking for.
I have a Orvis Battenkill III reel, the click & paw version, and was looking for a spare reel but they are extremely hard to find. The price for the entire reel was a little more than the Battenkill spare reel and it seems spare reels for the Zero aren't as hard to find for this model. I like the C&P version of fly reels for the simplicity and weight savings. I'm primarily using this for my euro nymph rod setup right now and it works well. I have one other C&P setup from Leland Fly Co. which I like so those are my only other comparisons. Some of my disc drag reels are Chinese knockoffs which were the right price but too heavy and no clicking sound on reeling in. I also had some freezing of the disc system in sub-freezing temps recently.
I can see why some comment about the louder clicking noise. It is certainly louder than the other two C&P reels mentioned above but nothing I can't handle. Indoors it much more noticeable while outdoors while in the heat of it, I can't tell the difference. Compared to the Orvis, it's not as sturdy but I don't think that's a deal killer unless you're doing some rugged hiking while the reel is exposed. Even then I think this thing will take a beating. That said, you can certainly tell the difference between the Orvis Battenkill and this reel. There is a much wider price difference though so if you're looking for a good value on a C&P style reel, I recommend it. Oh, it also comes with a nice protective case whereas the Orvis was in a soft bag.
Andrew Hernandez : Lightweight, great sound, learning curve with click and pawl
Have not had a chance to test this out yet but I have paired it with the redington butterstick 476 and casting in the yard to practice a slow speed rod has felt great. Fiberglass tends to feel a bit heavier so pairing with such a lightweight reel evens out your casting arm. I have paired it with RIO wf trout light line 4wt. I'll readjust my review when I field test it.
Kaylyn W : Seemed great at first
Little disappointed. The middle piece that holds the two sides together came out and the threads are stripped and it will not hold. This after one outing. So now I have to repair a brand new reel
Amazon Customer : The name Zero suits very well this reel
Bought this reel for my sons birthday to match a brand new Hydrogen rod. At the very first outing, the clicker system failed after 5 minutes I need to contact Redington for a replacement
Michael : Love my Reddington Zero Reel
Great 3 wt reel, very light weight perfect match to my Reddington rod.
123Hillbilly321 : That noise, wow.
Lightweight and beautiful.
That racket it makes, wow. It reminds me of when I was a kid and I had a Zebco 202 with that bait clicker. It is unbelievably noisy. I was amazed that the reviews were so good. I replaced it with a Lamson Liquid, a work of art. I also bought a Redington Behemoth and it is absolutely spectacular, I hate to use it since it is so beautiful.
StarPathOne : Excellent design and operation
Excellent design and operation. The clicker is a bit loud, but this is a click and pawl, not a high end drag reel. If you like a very light resistance for protecting light tippets, and want an ultralight reel for backpacking trips, or to balance with a light line rod, this is a great value for the price.
Adam Grace : Great reel for the value.
Great reel for the value.
Annie : RH retrievers...
The "zero" will be upside down for all the RH retrievers out there
carld : Good deal.
Seems to be well constructed. Have not used the reel yet but lightweight and perfect for my needs. Good price.
dustin case : Five Stars
An amazing light weight reel
Kevin R. : Two Stars
Looks great and perfect size. Unfortunately the drag just sounds...awful.
Moua H. : Five Stars
nice reel
cj : I love this little reel
I bought one for my girlfriend to use on her 8ft 4wt. I liked it so much I picked on up for my 7.5ft 3wt. It's supper pleasant to strip line from and reel back in. I dig the click!
Adam Grace : Great reel for the value.
Great reel for the value.
Amazon Customer : It’s a clicker and has no drag adjustment— very well made though
No drag adjustment
Cgarcia : Get this reel
Perfect reel for those who want to feel the trout and smaller fish without a drag. Love it and would recommend it for small creeks and streams.
J. T. : Lightweight but Loud!
I like Redington products generally and own some of their Clearwater combo rod and reel sets. I had a box store 5 weight rod that was fairly inexpensive, and wanted a lightweight reel as basically a line holder. This Redington Zero fit the bill. It looks fine; and feels like it’s built well in this price range. It will be easy to exchange spools with the push button locking mechanism. What I love about it is how lightweight it is. Seriously! I basically feel the rod and nothing else with this attached! This would be a great reel to take backpacking because you would never know it was there unless you looked at it.
To me, the downfall is how loud the click and pawl mechanism is. Any click and pawl reel will make some noise; but when every other angler looks up at you when you pull line out you know it’s an especially noisy reel! That’s seriously it’s only drawback.
Colt Lacey : Bang for buck with just one issue I found.
So, while I realize this is a reel on the cheaper end, it is also a very simple reel which I do like. It is great for working with fish that aren't massive. It is a clicking style, so no adjustable drag which I am just fine with. I use the 2/3 with my 1wt Redington Butterstick, The drag on the 2/3 model is extremely light which again,I don't mind at all. The reel will fit 100 yards of 20# backing and your fly line. The clicking started out quite loud, but after fishing with it for two weeks almost every day, it has quieted down quite a bit. The only reason I am giving this reel 4 stars is because while reeling in a large rainbow, the main shaft had unscrewed itself and the entire spool came off in my hand. Had to yard the fish in by hand at that point. Just screwing it back in at the lake did not work because it came apart twice after that. Also, every time it came apart, while trying to put it back together, I had inadvertently wiped all the grease off the shaft, then the reel was very tight and would not spool out easily.
In the end, I was able to fix the issue. I used blue loctite on the main shaft threads, then cleaned the shaft and applied silicone grease to the main shaft and spool. After taking on and off a number of times, reeling and running line out, the reel is completely back to normal and not tight any longer. So as a suggestion, if you purchase one of these, maybe consider adding loctite to the main shaft threads. I will be doing this to my other Zero reel I bought. But aside from that, it has been a great reel and I highly recommend it, bang for buck, it's a great reel if you're not too worries about drag.
Michael Sawicki : 2/3 Weight
Awesome compact fly reel. Perfect 3 weight reel! Highly recommend.
ugo labadini : ottimo rapporto qualità prezzo
bellissimo, ottimo prodotto, spedizione velocissima complimenti al venditore Garue
Jacob Flick : Perfect for my 2wt fly rod
Perfect for my 2wt fly rod. barely weighs anything. Wouldn't recommend if for anything over a 3wt because it doesn't have an adjustable drag system
carld : Good deal.
Seems to be well constructed. Have not used the reel yet but lightweight and perfect for my needs. Good price.
Jay A Roehl : Five Stars
Great click pawl reel!
Amazon Customer : Three Stars
Well made. Too simplified.

Awesome reel. Delivery was really slow
Michael : Love my Reddington Zero Reel
Great 3 wt reel, very light weight perfect match to my Reddington rod.
KJT : Great Reel
Great reel, superlight and durable.
Amazon Customer : Three Stars
Well made. Too simplified.
Nomork : Great value light wt reel
This reel is solidly built. A decent value, and looks sharp.
I have used it a handful of times and am enjoying it.
It is a good solid reel.
The only real con is, it is loud. If you don't like the sound of clicking while reeling, go with another reel
Tom : Great Value for the Money
Great Value for the Money, and looks good doing it. I bought this for a bass set up, however I may buy another to pair with a small trout rig. The reel feels like its quality made, and was very light. Also a nice choice of colors available. Redington makes quality products at affordable prices.
