Questions about Croch Fly Fishing Reel with Aluminum Alloy Body 3/4, 5/6, 7/8 Weights(Black, Gun Green, Gold, Silver)
Q:
Instructions for left to right retrieve unclear. Small screws on hub super can't loosen. Screw on drag side reverse thread. Are others too.
Answer: Normally we inspected the products before delivery. Did you remove the E-clip before loosening the small screws? Please contact our customer support, we will send a video of instruction to you. If it doesn't work, we will resend a new reel.
Answer: To change the retrieve depress and hold the small lever on the spool hub. While holding this release lever, pull the spool from body of reel. Pull straight off otherwise the spool will bind because of close tolerences. Once off, remove the wire-like hex shaped retainer clip from inside of spool whith fingernails. Take out the one-way bearing and turn it around. Re-assemble. It is quite easy.
Answer: It's actually really easy once you know where to look. Watch this video (https://youtu.be/Y3lSicGp7To); the Croch reel is set up the exact same way with the exact same spring.
Answer: I haven't received mine yet
Q:
How do i know which way the retreive is set?
Answer: Our reel has been set at the factory for left-hand retrieve. The package comes with instructions to convert your reel to right-hand retrieve.
Answer: Actually, mine came with a right hand retrieve. You can tell by which direction the line is engaging the drag. The line should be coming off the reel from the bottom when mounted on your rod.
Q:
What weight line??????
Answer: When you choose the color like "fly reel + fly lines+leader ", you will receive a reel which is pre-loaded with fly line and backing.
Answer: It'll handle a 100 foot line, but from experience, even with the bigger 5/6 reel and especially the 3/4 reel, only use about 1/2 your 100 yards of backing, or you'll run out of room.
Answer: I'm using a 3 weight line on a 6ft 6in bamboo rod for this reel. Working well.
Answer: You didn’t say what size you purchased. Get a 20 lb backing and use the higher number fly line. Most popular is weight forward floating fly lines
Answer: 3/4 weight with backing, probably can handle 5 weight without backing.
Answer: I used a 3wt line.
Answer: I used 5 wt and that wt works great
Q:
Me wuould ser tan amable si yo por más de un producto enviar a mí en una pacllage?
Q:
Can i buy a extra spool for this item in 3-4wt?
Answer: Not sure I bought two reals. Easier to switch reals than spools
Answer: You cannot, i tried to and they said they don’t sell spools separately. It is a decent reel though for the price, and cheap enough to where you can just buy a second reel
Answer: I don’t think so as cheap as they are I just buy another reel
Answer: Can’t help with that
Answer: No they do not offer extra spool but for the price I bought two in different colors and swapped spools. Now I have one gold with black and one black with gold. They fit perfect and work great
Answer: At this price just buy a second reel, it's worth it.
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: I'm unsure.
Answer: I don’t think so. I bought an extra reel they are so cheap, but well made.
Q:
Is the floating line included weight forward?
Answer: Yes but no backing for it. They are great reels for the price.
Answer: Yes it is...and casts great !
Q:
The reel has no resistance going one direction.... It "free" reels one direction? Is it broken or is this by design?
Answer: Fly reels only have resistance ("drag") in one direction to help you "fight" the fish. You don't want drag hindering you from reeling in the line.
Answer: From your description it doesn't sound like your reel is broken, try adjusting the oversized knob on the side of the reel. That will put resistance on your line.
Answer: It sounds to me like you have something on backward, meaning, the reel is set up for left hand retrieve and you put it on for right-hand retrieve or the opposite. If you switched it from right to left retrieve (or the opposite), then you need to take the line off and re-spool it back on or the line comes off backward and you get the "free spool" thing happening. It is easy to do. Believe me, I know from experience.
Answer: I think I have a better picture of what you are saying. That is the way the reel is designed. When fly fishing you pull out a few yards of line and with one hand, hold the excess line with your left hand and as you are "whipping" your rod feed the fishing line little by little once you get your desired length then cast your line. The lack of resistance is deigned to facilitate the casting. It takes practice....hope it helps.
Answer: I assume it is by design. Saw the same with the one I purchased, but it did not seem to have an effect once it was rigged on a fly pole with backing and line attached.
Q:
Does the line come on the reel in the package
Answer: The line and leader come in separate packages, they are NOT already spun on the reel as it appears in the pics.
Answer: I ordered the reel with out the line but I believe that you can order it with the line and backing already done..........for a small fee of course.
Answer: No, just the reel, cloth sack, and manual. Very tight tolerence in shaft manufacture so be precise when removing and inserting spool. This is why this reel is so smooth.
Answer: No, they are packed separately.
Answer: No it does not.
Q:
Where is this piece made?
Answer: The real is built in China but don't let that scare you off. It is very nicely machined and balanced. You really cannot go wrong for the price
Answer: I discarded original container and there is nothing on the reel showing country of production. Sorry!
Answer: China.
Answer: Definitely made in China

Quisiera saber si me pueden Hacer Un Solo Paquete de Envío dado Que Estoy Interesado en comprar Más De Producto ONU
Q:
How much maxcatch 20# backing line on 5/6 reel? i.m using wf5f flyline.
Answer: Load the fly line, loosely tie on 20lb running line to fill reel to max comfort level. Now use objects in your yard to take fly line and running line off,tie to objects and now reverse the process by tying on backing first, Then the fly line should be added to complete the process by securing it to the running line or backing.
Answer: I believe I used about 25 yards worth.
Answer: 100 yds max. the spool is small.
Q:
The product description lists a 2/3wt model, but I don't see an option when purchasing. Any idea how to buy the 2/3wt version?
Q:
How much backing can go on the 7/8 reel?
Answer: It depends on the fly line, how big it is. 200 yes of 20# backing should be enough. A good tip is to put the fly line on first then put the desired amount of backing on Then just ty a loop on the end of the backing and wind it back on the spool Take off the fly line and put the backing on the reel. Finally put the fly line back on
Answer: 50-100YD
Q:
Do all of the models come with the fly line and tapered leader. The line is shone on some of the models/finishes and not others.
Answer: No, as we indicated in the description, the reel comes with fly line and leader when you choose color like 'fly reel +fly lines+leader '. We will revise the product page detail according to your suggestions. Thanks.
Answer: The answer is no. Those as shown w/ no line are reels only. Those with line are just fly line and leader, no backing.
Answer: I bought mine without the fly line / leader.
Answer: Ok just what I wanted as a backup
Q:
What is the max drag setting?
Answer: At the maximum setting the spool will hardly let out line but will retrieve line freely
Q:
How much line does the 7/8 reel hold.
Answer: It felt so cheap, i didnt bother wasting line on it. If i had to guess, 150-200yds of 20# backing and 100' of flyline. Its definitely just a decoration for me. I cant keep the spool in the reel, pops out because the shaft is bent just enough to cause a wobble and the gap on the bidge opens up enough to catch a flyline. Looks nice on my coffee table though.
Q:
How much backing should i put on my 5/6 reel and will that reel be ok with a 7 1/2 foot pole?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: I respectfully disagree with Mr. Howard; the whole concept of overbalance is personal preference. Each set up has its own feel and you, with practice, will learn how to most efficiently cast that set up. With my 5/6 reel experience, I recommend only putting half of the probably 100 yards of backing you probably bought. Unless you're in super deep lakes or large rivers, you most likely won't get into your backing, so go with what fits on your reel best, as I said in my case about 50 yards max.
Answer: The reel is fine for a 7 1/2 foot pole and the one i've got hold just the wf line with no backing (large hub leaves no room)
Q:
Where is this piece made?

Answer: I discarded original container and there is nothing on the reel showing country of production. Sorry!
Answer: China.
Answer: Definitely made in China

Q:
does the reel not come with backing?
Answer: No backing. Mine didn't come with the correct weight line. I had to buy new line for mine.
Answer: no backing but great reel for price have two in differnt sizes
Answer: No backing
Answer: No backing
Q:
can it be used in salt water fishing?
Answer: This is a beautifully made reel and should be fine for salt water. The reel is most suited for heavier or longer rods because it is heavy for its intended line size. I gave the one I purchased to the Boy Scouts for Summer Camp use with longer rods and heavier lines; the 3/4 reel balances well the 8 1/2 ft. rods at Camp. Always wash off any salt water residue ... a thorough dunking and drying, or corrosion or dry salt remains will lessen the life of reel and lines. Such is a usual procedure for salt water fishing.
Answer: I use my 3 wt ever now in then to salt water fish
Answer: Its a super cheap quality reel. I use mine for decoration. Get a Scientific Anglers Ampere IV reel. You can get em for $50, best reel for the money.
Answer: Sorry not sure it is aluminum tho so might work
Q:
would like a spare spool, is this possible?
Answer: Yes, spare spools of these fly reels are available. Please contact our customer service for more information .
Q:
Is it a weight forward line?
Q:
is this a disc drag?
Answer: Yes it is disk
Answer: yes

Q:
How much backing can go on the 3/4
Answer: I've got a hundred yards of 20 on my 5/6.
Q:
What weight and taper line comes with the 3/4 reel?
Answer: I ordered the 3/4 weight and it came with a 5w weight forward line... which makes no sense. I had already ordered a 3w line so I didn't try to return it.
Answer: The comes with a roll of 5 wf line..no specs on the tapered leader but it appears to be 3x...I used the reel yesterday and the line casts very well..hope this helps!!
Answer: 9ft 4x
Q:
Does it come with backing or just the line and leader?
Answer: It came with just line but it wasn't spooled, it was as if it was wrapped around something, taken off and then wrapped. I ended up with quite a mess. I should have taken better care when I spooled it on the fly rod. I had backing and had that loaded already. It seem like a pretty good reel at that price.
Answer: it didn't come with anything until I contacted the seller; they said only certain models came that way; I said that wasn't clear from their page, so they sent them separately later, but the "weight forward" line is, as far as I can tell, flat.
Q:
How do you reattach the retainer and spring retainer? Part #s 26 and 27? Thanks. h
Answer: Greetings,
Q:
Are both the black reel, and gold reel hard anodized? They look spray painted, just want to make sure they hold up well. Thank you! 8-)
Answer: I have the gold and is not spray painted however the finish isn't that great,,probably powder coated...So far mine has done very well...I have a 3/4 wt and it feels really good on 5wt rod...hope this helps
Answer: My opinion is at least the gold one is powder coated mine came with a cpl chips on the spool i dont believe it is anodized it would of scratched not chipped but reel seems good for the money will be may before I can use it due to health isues also drag seems nice by hand hope this helps
Answer: I ordered the plain aluminum one I don't know about the colored ones. Nice reel. Probably powder coated
Q:
Are there spare spools available for this reel?

I'm curious how much backing is added if I choose package w/backing+fly line+leader?

Q:
Bought 7/8 reel, how much backing would I need to get for it?
Answer: That's always a bit iffy for me. Depends a bit on what type of line you're using. If you're using a heavy Spey line like OPST, which is very thick, try the full spool of lazar line or equivalent. I put WF 7# Rio Trout LT and used a standard spool of 100 yards.
Answer: It probably depends on type of gamefish you are targeting. In any case you should fill the reel to the max. I used Scientific Angler 20 lb Dacron; used 100 plus yards to do the trick.
Answer: a bout half the reel depth. Amount depends on line thickness
Answer: maybe 20 yards. the spool in not very deep.
Answer: I used about 50 or 60 yds
Q:
How much backing firs on the 3/4?
Answer: I put half of a reel of 20 lb backing at 50 meters/54 yds on my reel and still had room for 100 feet of floating weight forward 4F line.
Answer: I ended up just taping the fly line to reel and put it on first and then taped backing to it enough to fill the reel and then reversed the process. This seem to work pretty well. I paired this reel with a 6’6” eagle claw fly rod and it made a really nice combo for about $30. I have caught over 150 trout on it this year and love them paired together. I hope this helps!!!
Answer: I'd say 100ft, but how much backing do you even need on a 4wt. Rod?
Answer: Very little,reel is tiny
Q:
Can this reel be used for saltwater applications?
Answer: Yes it can be used for saltwater I suggest rinsing it and your rod both with fresh water after each use
Answer: Don't really know but the reel is really smooth and drag system seems to work well. For the price it's worth a try
Q:
How do i purchase an extra spool?
Answer: Type in extra spool, Croch Fly fishing reel on Amazon.

Q:
How do I know which size reel to buy? He’ll be fishing for stream trout. I’m surprising my husband and can’t ask him.
Answer: Which reel you buy is dependent on 2 basic factors. First is the rod you are using it on, it's size and weight. Generally a smaller reel is ok on a larger rod but the opposite, a larger reel on a smaller rod, is unwieldy. Second is how much line capacity you need, as a larger reel can hold more. Line capacity is dependent on how hard-fighting you expect the fish will be. Hard fighters take more line. For "stream trout" a 4 or 5 weight setup is most common. I purchased a 4wt myself because it's lighter and I don't mind a smallish reel when I fish my 5wt. Hope that helps.
Answer: If your husband already has a rod look on the rod to see what weight it is. It will say 5wt or 9wt. The weight ranges from 3wt to 15wt. Buy the reel that matches his rods weight. If you are buying a rod and a reel then just match up both the weight sizes of the rod and reel.
Answer: https://guiderecommended.com/how-to-select-the-correct-size-fly-fishing-reel/
Answer: The reel is matched to the rod. You probably want a 3/4 for stream trout.
Answer: 3,4 is for light line/weight rods, 5,6 medium line/rods 7,8 heavy line/rods. Go with 5,6. He can use 4,5,6,7 weight line.
Answer: short answer, 4 or 5 weight would work.
Q:
The description states”croch fly fishing reel with cnc-machined aluminum alloy body with 100ft fly lines and tapered leader. where is the line ?
Answer: I have bought two of these reels. A 4 wt and an 8 wt. Both came with the line not installed. The reels are quite nice. The lines are "beginner's" lines. The leaders are adequate.
Answer: That's a good question. I seem to recall when I bought mine, the complete set with line was in the dropdown menu under "select". Now the menu has "Reel Only" . Looks like the complete set with line is no longer available.
Answer: There was no fly line included with this product. I believe this was a case of illegal and false advertising and am surprised that Amazon would place its golden reputation at risk.
Answer: Mine did not come with a line we had to purchase separate. Must be why it's a good price
Q:

Answer: Mine was anodized aluminum and I thought mine was a pretty good product for the price. It was better than one I bought at one of the big sporting goods chains at less than half the price.
Answer: Im not sure on the aluminum & it is powder coated i think it chips but for the money seem ok looks pretty good to i got the gold
Q:
how do you switch from left to right hand, ive tried to unscrew the screws but i cant seem to loosen them
Answer: Chances are you can't. You probably bought a right-hand retrieve and wanted a left (like me). You can't change it, unfortunately.
Answer: Pull out the spool, turn the bearing around then reassemble the reel and turn it so handle is on right side.bearing is a little tough to remove
Answer: Release to spool and a take it off. On the back side there is a spring that holds In the bearing. Take out the retaining spring then the bearing. Turn bearing over and replace retaining spring. This is a one way bearing.
Answer: As has been said, you can take off the spool and reverse the retaining spring. This video will show you how, and the set up is the same as the Croch reel - https://youtu.be/Y3lSicGp7To
Answer: Remove the spool and remove the metal clip on the back amd flip the bearings in the plastic clip around
Product reviews of Croch Fly Fishing Reel with Aluminum Alloy Body 3/4, 5/6, 7/8 Weights(Black, Gun Green, Gold, Silver)
L C : Not recommended for medium to heavy use
Not worth the headache of rigging this reel up and end your day on the water. No grease or oil inside the reel( bearings dry) save a little more money and get a simple lightweight tough reel. Not recommended for medium to heavy use. I fish several times a week with fly and regular spin gear and it didn’t last one day . No matter what always disassemble your new reel and lube it up where it’s needed!!
Jessica : Great Reel -
This reel is great. A buddy and I took it out the day it was delivered. We got home and he ordered 1 also. Unlike many other small reels this has a nice reel handle that is usable. The drag system works great. No reel wooble. Only suggestion to manufacturer is the seats could be a bit thinner.
Monomoy : Reel is just as advertised.
Arrived in 2 days of shipping and in a nice felt bag, inside a solid box. No problem changing over to L hand after pulling out retainer clip and reversing the main bearing. easy peasy !
Added some grease and it now spins silky smooth. Tight fit and nice finish. Nice gold color as advertised and looks to be a very decent product. time will tell, but for a 5/6 reel I'm very pleased with the purchase and low price.
Sidney E. Holden : Quality workmanship
Could not believe the quality of this reel. Price was unbelievably affordable. I want to buy another one a different size next. I bet, after having taken it apart and examining it closely, it will give many years of service.
Kogabear : Great value, strong reel, will serve you well.
I've had expensive reels and several of the lower "price" ones and they all do the same thing, to be truthful I can't tell very much of a difference. I find that putting money in good line and pole, my fly fishing is better served, that's where the difference can be felt. I got this reel because of the price, I don't care for the plastic style preferring metal of this size and shape. I have the more traditional flatter shape ones and like this better. It's light enough and my pole is balanced. It has a nice drag with a slight click. It free spools on the retrieve. I put 20 lb. backing, Scientific Angular, Air Cell wf5f. I won't necessarily be a backup but another option for fishing.
Amazon Customer : The quality is great
I love how it's so smooth working and light weight. The perfect reel you could ever buy.
SW : I like it:)
Just what you’d expect. Honestly it looks like all the other China fly reels but cheaper. They must all come from the same factory. This one is $20 while the other options are $25-60. I’m happy with this reel- smooth drag, medium weight, nice looking. Yes, it could be a little lighter but a for cast reel, not bad. I purchased the 3/4. Keep it oiled and back off the drag when you put it away and I bet you get decent life out of it.
solocanoe : BEST reel value I've ever found
I bought 2 - the olive and the gold. both in the 4/5 size. I flat out love them.
The click isn't too loud...the large arbor is great...the drag works fine...and I just get to fish...not worry if I put a scratch on a reel that costs hundreds of bucks when I lay it down to land a fish in the net. (My son got my Orvis stuff...I'm happy with this reel and don't miss the other)
Nathan james poelstra : Comes right handed but can be reversed
Great beginner reel. I got back into fly fishing a while back and got this to go with a wakeman combo. (Good pole, bad reel that's why I bought this reel) I've had it for about 3 months and I havnt had a problem with it. Except for the reel comes tight handed. Which is a simple matter of flipping the bearing, which isn't that hard.
Michele Miller : Works perfectly
I don't know why others pay hundreds more for name brand reels when these reels perform just as well for hundreds less.
Benny : The drag works fine for as seldom as I need it
First off I'm a novice, I have been fly fishing off and on for 15 years. I fly fish sunnies in the spring and that's about it. For $16. you can't beat it. The drag works fine for as seldom as I need it. It holds line and its smooth. no plastic!
Jared : I was pretty disappointed with this reel
I was pretty disappointed with this reel. Price-wise it was cheap enough for a beginner fly angler, but it looked cheap, like r would o my last a season or two. I sent it back.

Barry J : Surprisingly great value for the money
Reel is well finished, has a decent drag, and good line capacity. I higly recommend this product.
Amazon Customer : Oversized to use as nymph reel - could almost be heavier
I had one of these already for my 5wt flyrod and liked the reel enough to order another - has a simply sprag bearing type reversing system (flip the bearing to reverse the action) with good sensitivity between settings on the reel.
I thought the cage would prevent the euro leader from getting behind the reel and it seems mostly to do so but the gap is just enough that in theory you might need to pop the spool off - the only issue is that the spool retention lever is somewhat dainty and I wonder if it will stay engaged over time.
Tradesman : Reasonable
Well I guess I was expecting more. I purchased the reel with the 3wt line and leader since the line and leader only added about $7 to the total cost.
I realize that the quality of a line has much to do with the casting experience, but I am completely willing to accept that risk for the added $7. Unfortunately it's the reel that was the disappointment.
Another reviewer made note that the machining quality was not very good. That is the reason I am giving the reel a 2 star rating.
The weight and overall feel of the reel provide a decent balance to an inexpensive Eagle Claw "Black Eagle" 4wt 8' rod I have. The softer medium action of this rod seems to harmonize well with the reel.
In a light weight set up like this, I don't expect the drag to be much of an issue aside from paying out line for casting. The drag seems to be smooth and decently adjustable. I believe I can dial it in nicely for stripping line to cast, although I haven't yet loaded it up.
My real complaint for the reel, and the basis for 2 stars, is there is a rub between the spool and the frame. The rub occurs along the slot (guide) where the frame tine and slot on the outer rim of the spool meet. Perhaps this is poorly described, but the "tine" should not actually touch the inside of the slot in which it rides. The described tine is the narrow extension of the frame that extends to the outer rim of the spool creating the enclosure to keep the line in the spool housing. Anyhow, whether the spool is slightly out of round or the spindle isn't quite straight, the spool rubs slightly as it rotates.
This should easily have been caught by QC when the reel was built. I have not sent the reel back yet, as it will create an inconvenience, but it is certainly something that I should do.
I actually like the reel overall, but the risk of receiving one that has issues is real. If I keep this reel as is, I will constantly be thinking of replacing it because that rub is annoying as hell. Perhaps return shipping is covered for "defective". I guess I will look into it.
Update 4/2/17: The seller has contacted me about the issue. So that's a good start. I will post about the follow up as it evolves.
Update 4/8/17: I returned the reel. The seller responded to my review via the Amazon email system and I consider their communication to have been timely and satisfactory. The seller shipped a new reel that functions as it should.
I raised my rating to 3 stars. I would give it 3.5 if possible. I think the combination of materials and workmanship at this price point meets my expectations. It' essentially a $20 reel. How much can be expected? At any price, one expects function without defect. The second reel I received satisfies that criteria.
I think if you purchase this reel and there is no defect, you will be satisfied with your purchase. It's a lot nicer than a stamped tin or plastic clicker.
As far as the customer service, I think they did a stand up job.
Buying Frenzy : For The Price A Decent Reel
Right out of the box this looks like a good deal for my backup rod. And it came with everything you need to set it up. It came right hand retrieve but swapping was as simple as pie. Drag is smooth, retrieve not as much (thus the 4 rating) but acceptable at this price range. It will catch fish.
Fowtown : Didn’t make it to first cast.
Took it out for its first run. And there is zero line tension. Unable to get it to work properly. Very disappointed and ruined a good fishing trip
Phillip Reedy : Please read, I had drag issues on arrival but the fix is mind numbinly simple.
Out of the box, the reel neither spun smooth and free in retrieve direction or had a smooth linear drag force so I decided for the price I would risk destruction to disassemble. The Spool is quick release and the release works perfectly but not as smooth as a higher tier reel, I decided to pull out the one way clutch and look at the bearings, both were stiff, gritty and dry. This was easily remedied by removing the one in the spool cleaning and lubing with Reel X (what I keep on hand since I'm in saltwater more than fresh) and it was good to go. The one pressed into the reel body would not come out so I gave it a good squirt of reel x and spun it with the lid to the lube and it came right to life and smoothed out good enough. Next I removed the screw from the drag knob (reverse threads) and fully unscrewed the drag knob (standard threads). This must be done carefully as the drag knob clicker can be damaged. When I felt the knob try to bind I wiggled it and you can feel the drag clicker let go and you can unscrew it further. I had to shake/wiggle it several times before the knob was clear of pressure from the spring. removing the knob (knob facing vertical up) you will see the drag clicker (little brass nose cone near the bottom, 3 silver pins, a spring washer and a normal washer. All of those parts will fall out if turned over and gravity gets them. remove them and set them aside for safe keeping. There is a small nut on the spindle now exposed, Mine was a 5/16ths, standard threads, and when removed the spindle assembly and drag pack, and drag clicker can be removed. I recommend holding the spindle in place while removing the nut. Next, flip the reel over making sure not to let the spindle and everything behind it fall out, remove the spindle, drag pack (noting orientation) and drag clicker. There is a drag washer, a drag fiber and a keyed washer (in that order) that will probably need pried apart. My drag fiber was completely stuck to the drag washer and had ZERO grease on it which was causing it to bind up when when the drag needed to slip. Coat the both sides of the drag washers with a drag safe grease, and reassemble in reverse order mentioned above. The reel now spins freely and the drag has a wider adjustable range and a very linear pull. I dabbed a little grease on the point of the spindle that quick release slide over and it helped smooth out the quick release/reinstall. The spool is quite wide on the 3/4 to make up for the large arbor. I will update with line capacity asap.
Steve : Loading Line on Reel
This reel looks and feels good. My comment at this time (as I have not fished with it yet) is that when loading WF 4F line, it only needed 20 feet of 20 lb backing, just enough to cover the arbor a couple of times and so that I would have some backing to tie the fly line onto. The arbor of the reel is large in diameter, a nice design item for a 3/4 weight reel. Converting it from right to left hand was super easy, watch the video. The clip in the printed instructions is not the correct clip. The clip is retained within the arbor.
Karl A Mayer : I ended up replacing with a better reel. Don't bother
When I ordered this item, I thought why not take a chance on a low cost reel. This was going to be used on my second fly rod. The fact is, even though it appears to be solid and well-made, the reel just doesn't work very well. For example, if you pull line off the reel quickly, the spool will spin too fast and create backlash. This also happens when you try to reel in quickly. It just isn't worth even the small amount that it cost. I ended up replacing with a better reel. Don't bother!
BFC : Good quality reel for the money.
Didn't expect it to have bearings.
Didn't expect it to have bearings. It's a better reel than some I have costing 5 times more.
Sidney E. Holden : Quality workmanship
Could not believe the quality of this reel. Price was unbelievably affordable. I want to buy another one a different size next. I bet, after having taken it apart and examining it closely, it will give many years of service.
EHM : Undersized and this Reel Winds Up the Line by Itself
I wanted a reel for a 4 wt. fly line and some backing. The reviews said these reels run small, so I ordered a 5/6. I put 50 yards of 20 Lb. backing on the reel, but then I couldn't fit all of the fly line on the reel (the fly line is 100 ft. long.) So, I ordered the same reel in a 7/8 size. The 4 wt. line and backing fits on the 7/8 reel. However, I also have a problem with the reel when fishing. First I strip line off the spool before casting it. Then, while I'm casting, this reel winds the line back onto the spool. The clutch bearing is so easy and smooth, the casting motion causes the spool to turn and wind up the line. Adjusting the drag setting doesn't help and there's no "clicker" or any other mechanism to help overcome the inertia causes this problem. One workaround is to strip extra line before casting and do it, again, before the next cast. But that's no an ideal solution and it's more frustrating than you might think until you have to deal with it.
Benny : The drag works fine for as seldom as I need it
First off I'm a novice, I have been fly fishing off and on for 15 years. I fly fish sunnies in the spring and that's about it. For $16. you can't beat it. The drag works fine for as seldom as I need it. It holds line and its smooth. no plastic!

Gary : Punches above its weight
On a dark and wet November morning in the PNW, I took my trusty 5/6wt fiberglass rod, and this brand new similarly sized reel to a local river in an attempt to truly break the thing in and find its capabilities.
Guided by cell phone light and the bubbles of the stream, I waded out to about ankle deep, and stripped off about 30ft of WF6F line with an unweighted pink and green woolly bugger on the end. During those initial strips, I discovered the drag was set far too lose and the reel did backlash considerably. Luckily, removing the spool is easy and intuitive, something that could not be said of the redington this reel replaced.
Line untangled, I cast out downstream using a single handed spey cast, and proceeded to swing through shallow riffles and seams.
The line goes tight and I set the hook. The moment of truth is upon us.
Chum are not like Coho or Chinook. They don't aerialize, but they dig deep and run for miles. The strikes and headshakes are incredibly aggressive. The males are usually between 16 and 20lbs and are an incredible fight on an underweight fly rod. And it was one of these upper teen chum that destroyed my swung fly and was now headed down river towards the ocean.
With the drag set appropriately and applying proper pressure to the fish, I manage to get him to turn about 20 feet before my backing. And charge me. I slap the reel handle and am pleased to see it take up slack almost as fat as I could strip it in.
3 minutes later, having battled this tiger striped dinosaur to land, I popped the hook out and set him free. The trial by fire complete, I humbly offer these notes with regard to this reel:
1. Its a $15 reel, that could easily pass as an Okuma costing 3 times that. The action, the drag, and the fit and finish feel the same
2. The drag is smooth at medium-high tension. Good enough to put the brakes on a fish it shouldn't have been fighting in the first place.
3. Anodization is uniform and free of blemishes. I got the gold one, and it looks awesome with a yellow line and orange backing.
4. This is purely personal, but I like having auditory and tactile feedback when reeling. Silent reels just feel weird, even though being able to quickly spool up line has its advantages
Directly comparing this to the older style of Redington path reels I replaced, this is hands down better. It feels better on the rod, the frame is more rigid, and the spool is easier to change out. I will absolutely add this reel to my "beginners fly fishing kit" recomendations
Amanda : It’s ok for now. Very Smooth
Didn’t like how the drag was set for leftys from the factory, took about 30 mins to switch it to be right handed. Had to take the whole reel apart to switch it. Had very small springs and detents, be careful to disassemble in a clear bag because springs will jump out. The main screw is lefty to tighty, righty to loosy. Very smooth reel.
Joe : Total garbage!!
This reel failed after a year of use. Don’t expect this to last. I have an old pfleuger that is 20 years old and I have only ever had to replace small screws that fell out once. This reel is set up for right handed retrieve, you can set it up for left handed retrieve by flipping a small clip inside. However, this might seem dumb, it won’t make that gratifying click sound anymore.
This reel can’t really handle the line it comes with. When you pull line out it has a tendency to bunch...a lot. I’ve had this happen dozens of times. Sometimes the line will get stuck and you will have to remove the spool.
Long story short...don’t waste your money on this unless you really love being annoyed by little things that shouldn’t happen with a new reel. This is crap.
Scroopy noopers : Go catch some fish
This thing catches fish. Wasn't expecting a whole lot for a 20 dollar reel but it functions well and I had no problem catching larger fish with this reel. Buy it.
Max L. : Works, but save your money.
First off, this item is NOT CNC machined like the item title says. It is made from cast aluminum. The casting is of a pretty low quality, and the paint is pretty ugly too. There is some slop between the spool and spindle, and the spool isn’t balanced so when retrieving line the handle wobbles. The drag is quite poor, without much usable range. Also, it only barely fits a standard, WF5F line and 50 yards of #20 backing. But what can you expect for a $16 dollar reel. If all you plan to use it for is hold line, and not fight fish into your backing than it should get the job done.
Kevin D : GOOD REEL FOR THE PRICE
Good inexpensive reel. However, despite what the company says, mine came loaded for RIGHT hand retrieve. You have to unwind the line, swap the handle and then re-spool. Not a huge deal but I was specifically looking for a LEFT hand retrieve when ordering and the info posted by the company is inaccurate.
Karl A Mayer : I ended up replacing with a better reel. Don't bother

Woogyeman : Balances out beautifully. Reel strips and retrieves line remarkably well far ...
WOW! I had bought this reel as a spare for 6 wt line. At the low price, and reading other reviews I had thought it would be an ok reel to keep as a spare around in the truck for an emergency breakage replacement. Well did I ever get a surprise, this reel is on par with any reel that has been attached to my 8 1/2' Fenwick FF80 rod. Balances out beautifully. Reel strips and retrieves line remarkably well far above comparably priced units. This reel now is my main reel I use with this rod.
Jon-Michael Harper : Nice little reel.
Really can’t complain about anything for the price of this reel. It doesn’t feel expensive, how ever what do you expect for a reel under $20? I did flip the bearing inside to change the direction of the drag. But for fly fishing you really don’t anything super fancy for it simply just holds the Line. 5/5 would recommend.
Dennis : great reel for the money
Great reel with plenty of space for backing and line. Very smooth retrieve with adjustable drag. Great reel for the novice.
Wallymortar : Croch Fly Fishing Reel
The reel is perfect for its intended purpose. I purposely bought a line weight/size one bigger than the rod and line I intended to use it with (5/6 reel for a 3-weight rod) based on the recommendation of an expert fly fisherman. This was a good choice in that the 5/6 reel is better balanced on the 10' Euro-nymphing #3 rod I installed it on. I'm not sure of the quality compared to more expensive reels but, so far, its very satisfactory. The quality and function would match reels costing 4-5 times or more than this reel. Any fly fisherman knows the primary purpose of a fly reel is just to hold line and this reel definitely serves that purpose well.
Sam S : Best reel no matter the price.
I only paid $17 for a reel that is perfect for my 5 wt rod I built. Unless you steal one, you couldn't beat this deal.
Amazon Customer : It’s ok.
The die cast left some imperfections in the reel I received. It hasn’t affected performance so far. It’s just a little disappointing. The drag is ok. I bought the 3/4 for my 3wt rod, so not really counting on using a lot of drag anyway. It’s a $20 reel, and that’s what I got. FYI: apparently one Chinese company is making this reel for many different companies. This is the same reel as the maxcatch eco, anglers dream, rudder...I’m sure there’s more. Basically if the reel is under $35...it’s probably this reel
Amazon Customer : It's just a device to store your line.
Good little reel for the money. Drag is not silky smooth like some folks reviewed.
Steve : Loading Line on Reel
This reel looks and feels good. Amazon Customer : NOT CNC MACHINED
This reel is a case of "you get what you pay for". Be aware this is NOT cnc machined. There are casting marks all over it. The paint on it is very thick and uneven. But it does hold line and the drag does seem to work. It's good enough for the price but it's listed as a machined reel which is a total lie.
James : Nice Reel
Surprisingly, this is a very good reel. Being so inexpensive, I expected it to be sloppy, but it's well made. It functions as well as any of my more costly Ross Reels. It was easy to reverse to opposite hand function. The disk drag works nicely and is quiet. (Having grown up in the era of click drags, this is a bit disarming. I miss the sound of my drag screaming.) I've caught some trophy fish and this reel handled them with a smile. I would like to get another spool, but they don't offer them. At this price it's more economic to just get a second reel anyhow.
Lewis G. Roberts : Need help on how to set it up and use ...
Need help on how to set it up and use it. Can't get a hold of anybody. Any one help me?
Pete... Trussville,Al : a good buy.
I used the reel yesterday for the first time. The reel's mechanism is very smooth. This reel's finish is "just OK". But for the money, I think,,a good buy.
Gen5Runner : Wells made “value” reel that works.
I gave this one star in hopes that folks looking at the one star comments would see this review. Comments about the drag not working properly are ALL due to the reel being used backwards. My reel arrived set up for right hand cranking. If you want to reel with your left hand, you must remove the one-way bearing and turn it over. Otherwise you’ll be turning it backwards. If you mount it backwards to reel with your left hand, you’ll be reeling against the drag when taking up line and free spooling when talking off line.
The tolerances on this reel are much greater than on an expensive reel so it may wobble a little and your line may slip between the spool and frame. You can’t expect tight tolerances on a value priced reel. Otherwise this reel is well designed and built.
Rick D. : Good price and works OK
best value for the money! Most fly reels are overpriced. This was the most economical, and it works fine.
BFC : Good quality reel for the money.
Didn't expect it to have bearings.
