Questions about SHIMANO THUNNUS CI4, Offshore Saltwater Spinning Fishing Reel
Q:
is the Shimano Thunnus 12000 better reel when it comes to power than the 8000? is it as higher the number the better the reel?
Answer: no, the number is the size of the reel - 12000 is bigger in size than the 8000. 4000 is the smallest of this range.
Q:
If I’m going for large pelagics and sailfish, with live bait will this do the job or should I go with a larger size Saragosa.
Answer: Yes. It would be a great live bait reel for sailfish. We’ve used it for tuna fishing and it’s been a very good reel.
Answer: Not tested on any fish beyond 20lbs. I am using braided lines 30lb. The drag seems to be reliable. Worth a try on a sailfish. Good luck.
Answer: Never fished for sailfish but the 4000 Thunnus is capable of handling 40 - 50lb stripers.
Answer: 1200 is way big enough.
Answer: I think it would be great I love them it’s all I have and it’s a good price.
Q:
would the 12000 be able to handle a good size tuna or a very big shark off a pier, witch happen to me and it just blew up my other reel i was using
Answer: Yes. Absolutely... it is used to catch sailfish. It can hold up to 300yards of 80 pounds of braid. Max resistance of weight is 25 pounds of drag. I pulled in 300 pound sharks off the surf.
Answer: I believe it can. The Shimano Thunnus is a very powerful reel. On a recent trip it was fantastic catching 50kgs to 80 Kgs Chao Phraya Catfish in Thailand
Answer: The 12000 would be best for yellowfin and pairing with an 8 foot rod.
Answer: Yes. The 12K would be a good choice.

This shimano made in japan?
Answer: I don't own a Shimano Thunnus 6000 reel, however, I own several Thunnus 8000 and 12000 reels. All were manufactured in Malaysia, so one can reasonably presume that the rest of the Thunnus Series is manufactured in Malaysia, as well.

Q:
What would be the best rod to use with the Thunnus 4000? I'm looking to do inshore and offshore. Would this even be a good reel for that?
Answer: This is a big spinning reel. If you're trolling or dropping a jig it will be best to use a stout rod. I use Hurricane rods. They're headquarters are in the Florida Keys. I also have several rods that work well with this reel. It's great for surf fishing as it can hold a lot of line. I use it with a lighter rod for fishing the reefs. I needed something to get my snappers in to the boat before the sharks and/ barracuda get my fish. After pulling in just heads, I decided to get something that can retrieve faster than the sharks & barracuda, and this one does the trick.
Answer: This is a great reel for any saltwater fishing. I use a 7' medium flex rod and fish primarily for red drum, speckled trout and flounder. Boated a nice 40" cobia last week with this reel/rod combo. Smooth dependable action with plenty of muscle for heavy fighting fish.
Q:
Is the baitrunner clicker loud then most baitrunners?
Answer: I have the Shimano Thunnus 16000 and 12000 spinning reels...both are bait runners...there is almost no difference in sound level....neither of the spinning reels bait runner sounds are as loud as the baitcasting reels I use...Diawa Sealine 30, shv's
Q:
What are the best corresponding rod models for the 4000,6000,8000 and 12000? Thank you.
Answer: I have the 12000 set up with tsunami airwave 11'
Answer: I have a 12 foot Diawa costal sp surf. The setup is great!

Answer: Made in Malaysia
Q:
Is the baitrunner clicker loud when the fish takes line?
Answer: Not as loud as the baitcasting reels I use.
Q:
is the Shimano Thunnus 12000CI4 Reel a baitrunner?
Answer: Yes. It has a lever that engages the secondary drag with its own drag setting. The bait runner releases witha slight turn of the crank or by lifting the lever. One more thing. Mine was submerged in salt water surf for a few minutes I rinsed it with fresh water and all is good. Many other reels would have failed. The only other reel that has held up this great to salt is from a small company called Nereus. Check out the Nereus SH 2500
Answer: Yes. It is a baitrunner. There four thunnus models 4000,6000,8000 and 12000.

Very good
Fred KMA : It’s a SHIMANO
I am a fan of the Shimano reels but don’t like the cost. Just got it so no new review yet but since so many people have claimed getting a used reel I figured I would say something. My reel came well protected in a secondary postage box. The seal on box from Shimano was cut and the wrapper bag had been opened or poorly closed to begin with. The reel appeared to be scuff free and no obvious signs of usage. I assume the seal was broken to verify the reel in box was reel that the box said.
Preliminary operation shows that it is A very smooth reel. I’ll check on it more later. I have matched it to an Okuma Cedros 11 ft MH surf rod. Not accounting for lure or weight and bait it was very well balanced. I am happy so far. My only real complaint is cost. It’s a shame we don’t build things like this here for a reasonable cost but that gets into too much political talk.

Tbl25 : BEST REEL I OWNED
I was deciding this or the Shimano Baitrunner and super glad i went with this one. I paired this up with the tsunami airwave and it is by far the best rod and reel combo i have ever owned. The Thunnus is super smooth in casting and reeling. Caught my first salmon on this and it was a smooth and fun fight all the way through.

Great reel for fishing
The Key Master : Great Value, The fish do not have a chance
I purchased this unit in November 2004. It had a tough year as I use this reel to surf fish in South Carolina. I use it with 30 pound test fireline. I always use the baitrunner feature.
This is simply the best surf reel on the market. (I did own a Van Staal for a few months, and traded it in for the Thunnus.)
With this reel, I landed a 4 foot shark and a 6 foot manta ray on the beach. The drag held togther. The reel gets plenty of splashes from the surf, it holds up well.
Towards the end of the season, it was completely summerged in the sandy surf water and the gears started to grind. For the low price of $24, Shimano serviced it. It is like brand new!
My one complaint - I need a lot more line. These large fish will take the hook and run. Even with the very small diameter of the fireline, the 6000 is a bit small. I now plan to use the 6000 as my backup reel, and I purchased a Thunnus 12000 for my primary. It holds about 550 yards of 30 pound fireline!
Bottom line - a great reel that is backed by a great company. The service is wonderful and reasonably priced. The drag and strength of this reel will enable you to bring in the monsters of the sea! (Just be careful to understand your line requirements)
