What is its line capacity, gear ratio?

Answer: 6.2:1 Gear Ratio, not sure the capacity off the top of my head but its quite substantial from my memory of using it.

Can the 40 be set up for both left or right handed retrieving?

Answer: Yep very easy swapping from left handed to right handed just a simple loosening of screw and then flipping to the other side and tightening in on that one.

Hi. Can I use this reel (40) for saltwater fishing and mangrove fishing, mainly for snook, tarpon and redfish??

Answer: I have used this reel with 30lb test braid for the last 6 months. It is my main reel, great price and great performance. I have pulled in numerous bull reds and 25 to 35 inch black drum...it even has a 42 inch crevalle and 4 foot bullshark under its belt. (both incidental hookups and successfully landed on the boat)

Answer: yes I have 2 I've used about year on trout redfish tarpon and amberjacks. BUT IT IS NOT MY FAVORITE LOT MAINTS .

Answer: I am using this for trout fishing with an ultra light weight 5 1/2 foot rod. I would not try it in salt water.

Answer: I don't remember but their website has the exact model number for 12 to 15 lb line and how many yards it will hold.

Answer: I have a 40 and I've used 15lb mono and 20lb braid and it works great.

Can you use 80 lb braid and is it a good reel for salmon and steel head

Answer: No idea why you would need 80lb braid. I’ve caught plenty of steelhead with this reel with 12lb test with 10lb leader

Answer: My husband says no drag is not good and 80 lb is a lot

How does it do on large fish and the drag system with running the drag?

Answer: Drag is very quiet but works fantastic. I bought this for my steelhead and walleye setup and works awesome.

Great reel! I originally bought a Ugly Stik GX2 combo but I ditched the reel because it was low quality. So now I fish the GX2 Rod with this reel in a size 40. I haven't had any issues whatsoever and it looks sweet!

I recently returned from a fishing trip to Ontario, Canada. I caught a 53" Muskie (56 lbs) using PRESXTSP35 with 10 lbs line. Talk about a work horse reel! I set the drag to about 8 lbs and the line was flawlessly fed with every run. My fishing partners thought I was using at least 60 lbs line because how easily this fish was played. Because of this reels performance I ordered/and received a PRESXTSP40 to put on a Muskie pole! I'm very pleased with its preliminary function ck and back yard casting testing. Also, after bringing in the monster fish, the reel showed NO signs of damage in any way! In fact -- I caught quite a few Northern Pike, one was 26.5"! FLAWLESS VICTORY!!!!

I bought 2 of these President XT's in size 40 for salmon and steelhead. For a number of reasons haven't been able to get out very much since the purchase but did put some time on them this summer/fall. I was fighting a nice coho when the handle of my reel snapped. Couldn't believe it! It's not much more than a thin aluminum? rod sheathed in graphite.. Cheap! In the middle of it all, I managed to swap out the handle from my other rod and landed the fish. Replacement handle from Pflueger is $35 with tax and handling. While waiting for the handle for that reel, I noticed that the other one was binding and the anti-reverse wasn't working, so when I got home I tore it down to see if I could find the problem. When I opened it I found the anti-reverse clutch spring had come off, so I figured out how it's supposed to be but I've been trying for several hours to put that back with no success. Horrible design. So the bottom line is that I've got 2 relatively new Pflueger President XT's that both have problems. I heard the Presidents are good reels. Wish I'd gotten those instead, but personally wouldn't touch another Pflueger. Very disappointed. BTW, good luck with their customer service and getting parts. I'd rate this one a zero if they had that rating.
