Answer: Hard to explain, but you hold with fingers in Center and thumb by the line. The flap out part is not held. Check you tube, they have good videos

We have not specifically tested the flip reel to 200lb and whilst we believe the structural integrity of the reel will be fine, hand line fishing is not normally associated with such high weights. Answer: It really depends on what you are fishing for you can put any size you want on it. I did not like the product. It doesn't work well at all. I tried different sizes and tried mono and braided lines and followed directions it just isn't that great. The concept is great but it function is not. It great in case of emergency and better than nothing.

This reel is a lot different than most cuban yoyo types. As some have pointed out, the rubbery material is sticky and will grab ahold of the line and not allow casting when dry. I read these reviews and was about to walk away from this product, but I decided to watch some of their videos on YouTube, and decided I would see for myself. I am glad I did. You MUST wet the outside rubber material with water before casting. It looks like the water just runs off, but it makes it go from unusable to just as good as my hard plastic yoyos just from being wet. The one suggestion I would have, is to buy some quality 20+lb mono to put on this so it isnt so sharp to handle with bare hands (this 10lb? line is pretty sharp), and also the line loaded from the factory is subpar just like every preloaded fishing reel I have ever seen. Just unspool the preloaded line straight into the trash, and reload something easier to handle and of better quality. Also the preloaded line is only held to the reel by a small piece of tape and not tied on at all, so if you happen to use most of the line, it will probably come loose and you will loose the line and any tackle on it anyway.

Inner silicone ring is peppled on the surface which snags the string while casting... immediately stopping the cast. Maybe good for dock or pier fishing.. unable to use to cast line..

Mine may not show verified purchase because it was on my wish list and someone purchased mine off my list. I like that it is comfortable to hold and the fact that you can wrap up everything on just pack and move. Also the line cutter came in handy and works wellWhat sucks is the thing just didn't work I wet the rubber and line and still could not cast it out. The line just would go out one turn or so and stick to the rubber. I also want to note that the original line it came with was not wrapped correctly in fact it was tangled up. The concept on this is awesome it needs a better design and also better quality control. I will take this out fishing a few more times and if anything changes I will update my review.

Have used Flip Reel earlier in the year and have now bought a load for the holidays for both the kids and friends. It's such a cool little product and allows you to fish at a moments notice.

Seen a few comments here about casting, it does take a little practice but when you get it, it's great. You must dunk it in the water before each cast but the rest is technique. Remember this is a hand line so most of the time we're simply droping the hook off the side of the boat.

What I also love is that we can throw 10 reels into a small bag and everyone gets to fish at the same time - awesome!

The folding feature on this hand reel is a neat concept but the lip of the spool causes a lot of friction on the line making casting anything light weight all but impossible. The manufacturer recommends you wet the spool to reduce line friction for longer casts. If you want a cast-able hand reel go with virtually any of the molded plastic models and polish the spool edge. Even the smallest one can be cast a reasonable distance with a 1/8 ounce lure. If you don't mind spending a lot more money to get what is unquestionably the world's best hand reel get an anodized aluminum Yoyito kit. It's only 3.5" in diameter so fits you pocket just fine without anything to fold. Even if you consider the 3.5" diameter the Yoyito is capable of casting a light lure a long way and it's more compact as it is than these are when folded up. If you want to go on the cheap the smallest diameter molded plastic ones will out perform this reel for casting by a LOT.
The folding concept is a brilliant idea but the material used in spool construction make it a terrible caster. Do yourself a favor if you intend to do any casting with it and avoid the Flip Reel.

Very disappointed in this product.

No matter how much weight I tied on, the line would not unspool from the reel when I cast it. As soon as the slack ran out, the line would grab the silicone rubber bell and snap back. This happened even if I wet the bell beforehand. It was actually a little dangerous as the weight came straight back towards me just as fast as it had been going out. Fortunately for me, I was just practicing so there were no hooks on the line yet. The only way to get any length on my cast was to first unspool the line and let it lay on the ground around my feet. You can imagine the mess that makes.

It's too bad because I really liked that the bell would cover the tackle when folded back over, which would keep hooks and lures from snagging in my pack. Oh well.

This is a great concept with flawed execution. I love the design, quality materials, that it packs down small and the fold-over feature for storage, but every attempt to cast is met with the line and hook flinging back at me. Wetting the bell as outlined by the directions doesn't do any good as the water beads right off the rubber/silicone, and the light texture of the bell doesn't seem to help. I've used yo-yo reels previously with no such problems. It's a great idea that needs refining due to this design flaw. If you're just looking to drop the line over the side of a boat, bridge, or dock, this will work fine for you, but don't count on casting. I'm hoping for a version 2.0 that solves this because I really want to like it but can't recommend it as this point.

I love this! I bought this for my cousins to use however I've found myself using this more and more! I'm used to fishing with a cane pole and this is much better! It's easy to cast and reel in. It has a convenient line cutter and a spot to place the hook so it doesn't stick anyone! It's made from materials that are very durable and look pretty cool. I definitely recommend this product!

I thought this reel would be great. But it is unusable. The rubber lip will catch the line because of texture on it. Wetting it down doesn't work at all. Buy a cheaper hard plastic one. The 9 inch ones are the best. Buy a 6 inch one only if you have too save space.

I took this product to a lake near high Sierra to try it out before including it with my usual backpacking gear. Casting any distance off the shore line was definitely not going to happen straight off the reel even though the bevel of it looks like it could be done. The silicone material is just too sticky to allow any smooth feeding of line. What I ended up doing is stretching my arms out and accumulating a loose pile of line careful set at my feet before tossing my line in. Because of the heavy weight used to cast I was able to get the line out a comparable distance to a normal rod and let that sink to the bottom of the lake as I fed more line in. Letting my hooks and power bait float a few feet of the bottom worked well for the trout that day. I do believe this would work even better in small creeks and streams where you can actually see the fish take the bait to set the hook because the weight being so heavy I had a few little guys stealing my bait without ever moving the line enough to move the weight.
The size and pack ability are next to none. The silicone cover allows me to keep one setup ready to go and simply cover it so nothing snags on the hooks in my pack.
Once I try in a creek or stream I will have to update this review.
