Now over 90 years later, Eagle Claw continues to carry on a legacy of integrity, honesty, and American heritage. From its humble beginnings, Eagle Claw has grown into one of the widely recognized brands in the fishing industry. Today Eagle Claw provides anglers with numerous choices of hooks and terminal tackle for an array of species, spanning both fresh and saltwater fishing.

Questions about Eagle Claw in Line Ice Fishing Reel
Q:
Does left hand reel have the handle on the left? I know silly question just need to be sure.
Answer: Yes, I bought the ECILIRBL. I hold the rod in my right hand and reel with the left. The reel can be converted to either hand. I think there is a youtube video on the subject.
Answer: You can put it on either side if I remember correctly. Used it last year. Not ice fishing yet.
Q:
Do you think you could cast with this reel? I am thinking of using it for small streams.
Answer: No I would not suggest trying to cast with this particular reel. I use it for ice fishing and it is an awesome ice reel but there isn't any type of braking system on this reel so you would have nothing but back lashes. The retrieve rate also isn't suited for casting this reel. I would suggest some type of under-spin reel.
Answer: You would probably have to strip some line out of the reel and cast like you would with a fly rod and reel. I haven't tried it though.
Answer: You might, in the free wheeling position the drum spins easily. If you have enough weight it would pull out quite easily, but there is nothing to stop the drum once it starts spinning, therefore a backlash might happen. It really does feel like a fly reel, so you could use it like that, strip out line and cast.
Answer: I think you would get an ugly backlash every time as there is no good way to thumb the reel to slow it down.
Answer: No
Q:
How do you keep the line on even on the eagle claw inline ice fishing reel when the reel is under the rod?
Answer: I have 2 of these and must say they are great reels. I use my pinky to move the line back and forth when reeling in. Been doing it so long that its automatic and I don't even think about it. Very easy to get used to
Answer: Unlike a baitcaster reel , the inline reel does not have a line guide . That being said , when filling the reel , just pinch the line with your finger and thumb and "guide" the line on evenly . I developed my own technique of tilting the real back and forth to keep the line even on the spool while in use . This is a minor drawback in the overall performance of these type reels . Trust me , I own three of these ! The drag system alone is second to none , and comes in quite handily when fighting big Walleye and Pike . Hope this helps, and tight lines to ya ! Bill R.
Q:
In which country was this made?
Answer: They are made in the good 'ol US of A !!!
Q:
What is the line capacity of this reel? Thank you!
Q:
Is the free spool in this reel smooth?
Answer: It is an absolutely "free" free spool. The only time I've had to hand strip was with the tiniest ice jigs. Most times you need to rest a finger on the side of the spool to slow it down. This is a great reel. You won't be disappointed.
Answer: The freespool is very smooth. I keep my finger on the edge of the spool to keep it from rotating too fast as I am pulling line out.
Answer: Yes, very smooth and works great for the smallest ice baits. I sometimes use my fingers so it doesn't free spool too fast.
Answer: It will free spool with the lightest jigs, best reel I have have ever used so far!
Answer: There is nothing smooth about this reel. It is your typical Chinese junk.
Answer: Yes it is very smooth even with fairly small jigs.
Answer: Very smooth even with extremely light lures.
Q:
Anyone have trouble with the anti-reverse not working intermittently ?
Answer: The drag has loosened up a couple times causing the spool to spin freely. But no issues with the anti-reverse.
Answer: No problems here. We have a couple of these and they work perfectly.
Answer: I had the same issues with my reel when I first started using it . I soon found out that when engaging the handle , a gentle click would not engage the anti reverse mechanism . A slightly quicker handle motion was all that was needed . No more problems since . Hope this helps , and tight lines to ya ! Bill R.
Answer: I have 3 of these that I use almost exclusively now and none have had this or any other problem so far. 1, I have been using for about a year and the other 2 about half a year.
Answer: I have not had that problem, but the drag setting can be easily bumped and changed. This can let line out with minimal tension.
Answer: Yes, I have had that problem. It seems to happen when you rear back setting the hook.
Answer: Yep. Also had issues with the drag. Bought 3 threw 3 away.
Q:
What pound line does this have
Answer: The reel comes without line. I use 6 lb. test, but it could probably handle 10 lb. test easily.
Answer: Doesn't come with line on it. I have 6 lb mono on one and 20 lb braid on another and both work great.
Answer: I use 1 and 2 lb. line but it is sold separately.
Answer: Does not come with line.
Answer: Doesn't come with line. I personally use 4 lb Berkley Trilene XL for all type of fishing but any line should work.
Q:
can you switch the handle
Answer: No, the only way to do it, would be to turn the reel around. The handle does not switch. So it will turn opposite direction of every other reel you have.
Answer: You can change the reel to either a left hand or right hand retrieve, but the handle stays in the same place. The reel body is symmetrical and what was the front now becomes the back.
Answer: Yes you can.
Q:
What's the difference between the two sizes (ecilirb and ecilirbl)?
Answer: there is no size difference, the "b" stands for color "black" and the "bl" stands for color "blue", even though this in not noted by the seller of the "bl" model.
Answer: Actually, I believe the size is the same. The rb means it has a red aluminum spool with the main body of the reel being black nylon. The bl is an all blue or black nylon reel. I have the all nylon in both blue and black and love them.
Answer: Concur with first answer. No difference except color.
Q:
do they no longer make this in blue? My first one is blue and I like it.
Product reviews of Eagle Claw in Line Ice Fishing Reel
Don L. Abernathey : A good basic inline for ice fishing
I've used this reel with 4lb mono in 10* temps - worked fine. No problem handling 16" trout with 22" pole. The drag works, the freespool works. Reel never snarled up on me when the line was iced.
There are $5 cheaper inline reels available (ZAvenak), but Eagle Claw is a respected name and brand. I'm liking it so far.
Morty Mcfly : Eh. Its ok at best
It ok. Drags a bit clunky and sticky. Free spool tensioner is usuless. Free spool button in a non convenient location. Theres better inline reels. Not worth it imo get a better reel
FluffyFingersMD : Great Reel - picked up a 2nd one!
My father got one of these for his Birthday... he loved it so much I picked up a 2nd one for Christmas for him this year. They work great in Minnesota conditions.
ZERK : reel gears slip
have purchased three of these 2 of the reels after you engage reel the gears slip and on setting hook reel spins will try 1 more
pyflies : Good vau

Gorf : Not for windy conditions.

Rickster1221 : Great value at a great price.
This product is by far worth every penny I paid for it. That being said it was cost-effective and inexpensive
Amazon Customer : Not impressed
The reel seemed to be a good value, so I took a chance. After fishing this reel for a month now it has been a disappointment. The line is constantly coming of the reel and getting wrapped around the spool or handle. Poor design or cheap. Don’t waste your money.

Robert A. : The 2nd time I used the reel, the clicker ...
The 2nd time I used the reel, the clicker stopped working and appears to be broken. The temperature at the time was around 0 deg. F. The other features seem to work as advertised. The free wheeling spool with adjustable brake is handy .
todd : Nothing smooth about this reel.
This is your typical Chinese junk forced on us every day. There is nothing smooth about this reel. You will need at least 4 or 6 pound test or the rough drag will break your line every time you get a big fish.
THAT TEXAS Gal : Three Stars
Not bad for the price

Does what it needs to do. I would have liked just a tad bit more space between reel and rod, but that's a super minor complaint.
Dave C : Smooth, but not sure if I'd buy another
I've only used this reel a few times for panfish through the ice. It operates smoothly. It has a good retrieve ratio for the fishing that I do. Size and weight is comfortable. It seems to have solid construction for its price. The line can easily unspool and one time it got tangled under the housing. I'm not sure yet if I'd buy another; I just need to use it a few more times to decide.
