another potomac thread 2024

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

Got to fish the river for the first time this year and had a blast. Fished Mattawoman between fire island and trash point for the most part. I caught over a dozen bass out there from 3:30-7:30 pm. High tide was around 6:30 or so. Caught a couple that were just right at 4 pounds at slack tide. Most came on a warbirds spinnerbait and a Daves football jig. My biggest fish all came on the jig. Got several 2 pounders on a crankbait and some more small ones on a fluke as well.

All in all I caught them on spinnerbait, fluke, crankbait and a jig. There was no wind to speak of until around 6 oclock. Perfect ideal conditions for sure. Hopefully next time out I will get on some 5-6 pounders. Still not bad for my first time on the river in over 4 months.

Anyone else gettin results on the river feel free to post up please.

Go ahead Steve!

Is that the spot we talked about over at Terrapin that one day that we both said we had hooked into nice fish at?  Seems familiar.

Those are some beautiful fish dude.  Looks like you got it figured out for shore.  All that anticipation to get out on the Potomac was worth it after all huh?

I'm back out this am but hitting the shore over at the same place we fished last time we hooked up.  Looking for some spawners but I'm thinking they might be a little shy this morning... we'll have to see.  Be over there around 8:15 if you're interested.

Great job though dude.  I knew you'd get on em'.  Congrats on a heck of a day.

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

I only wish I had started throwing the jig a few hours earlier instead of an hour before I had to leave. And I was catchin my fish in areas where no one really ever fishes very much when I'm out there. It's somewhat overlooked. I always see guys flying by on their bassboats. I have been goin to this area since I started on the potomac last summer and its always good for at least a few decent bass.

I really need to stock up on some more of those Daves tournament tackle jigs too. For 3 bux they are impossible to beat. I also need some paca craws in the bigger size to match up better with these jigs, I was using a baby paca and I think that hurt me a little. I'm pretty stoked to have such a good first river outing this spring and it can only get better. You really need to get a day off sometime so you can join me, or at least an early day off for half a day of fishing.

fishing user avatarRockvilleMDAngler reply :

I fished Pohick on Sunday with my buddy Nick and we slammed them.  Best producer was a red lipless crankbait but we caught fish on everything we threw.  Chatterbaits, jigs, beaver, spinnerbait, and swimbait all caught fish.  Best 5 would have been between 15 and 18 (we caught so many that we stopped weighing them after the first hour) and big fish was only 4.5lbs.

I fished on Saturday with Teddy Carr in the Aquia region, my goal was to learn that area and I learned a ton.  The cold front kept the bite down a bit but we still caught a lot of fish, biggest was a hair under 4lbs on a spinnerbait.  The water temps had dropped 10 degrees from Thursday to Saturday but the warm weather Sunday really got them going.

Now I leave tomorrow for a tournament at Gaston!  Man I love the spring!!!!

I saw Teddy Carr at Warbirds yesterday. Didnt realize how young he was. I always figured he was an old guy. Good luck at Gaston Marc

got out last night at 5:30 and got 2 hours of fishing in. The water temps were down to 63 and the bite sucked. Was I just in the wrong place or did the cold front really screw the bite up. I fished the same places that I fished a few days earlier and this time I only managed 3 fish all under 2 pounds  >:( Headed back out today for a bit to try my luck in the 77 degree weather

went out today around 4 and fished till 7. Stayed mostly in the same small area in mattawoman.Water temps were 67 when I got out there and fell to 63 when I left.Only managed 8 fish. All they wanted from me was a senko today which I havent really thrown in a few months since winter on lake anna. The biggest was almost 3.5 pounds and I got several that were just short of 2 pounds and then a couple dinks. Nothing to get too excited about. Better luck next time I guess. I really do hate fishing at low tide.

It's too easy to hit stuff at low tide. Yesterday I was idling away from a spot gettin ready to get on plane and I whacked something pretty good. Not sure what it was. So much safer at high tide to get from spot to spot. I also catch bigger fish at high tide for some reason

fishing user avatarsoccplayer07 reply :

i was not referring to driving at low tide. good point. I always use my GPS and take the same course every time just to be safe. Low tide really stacks the fish up on the outside edges. my catch ratio is at least 5:1 fishing low vs. high.

fishing user avatarA.Do? reply :

I LOVE lowtide. it keeps the bassboats back  :D while us kayakers tear it up.

fishing user avatardauberangler reply :

So is low tide better for shore fishing?

fishing user avatarsoccplayer07 reply :

no, not in my opinion. low tide draw the fish to outer edges while high tide pushes them up (shoreline too).

fishing user avatardauberangler reply :

Good to know!

very true . For some reason I been havin better luck on high tide and slack tide so far this season on the potomac tho. probably just a coinkydink. Headed back out tommorow most likely and then next week off to the cold side of lake anna for 5,6 and 7 pound spawning bass. Full moon on the 28th, the bite should absolutely be on fire by then pretty much everywhere.

It has some nice markings on it I noticed when I was holding it. probably something toxic , who knows. Im headed back out with Brent right now, launching out of pohick and fishing LHC, pohick and maybe a few other spots. The tide is gonna be goin out all day with low tide around when the the sun goes down. Should be interesting. Hoping I catch my biggest bass of the year today which would have to be over 4 lbs. Seems like everyone else has caught 5+ pounders this year except for me. I need to get in some kinda zone.

fishing user avatardauberangler reply :

Let me know when you got some open space to fish it up. Im so anxious to get tear them up after all the drama with my car, I need to take it out on some bass :D

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

Only caught 7 fish yesterday, spent 4 hours out there . My gf had the biggest fish of the day and her only fish but she was too shy to take pics with it. All of our fish came on a wareagle spinnerbait, best spinnerbait for the potomac imo.

Oh and I went to Mallows Bay the other day , heres a pic of my first bass there ever. Caught on a red baby minus 1. Also caught a 13 pound catfish that day too on the same crankbait. The second pic is a lil football fish I caught that was the length of a two pounder but weighed about twice that, talk bout a short lil chunk.

Steve, is Mallows Bay hard to navigate?

When I was there the water was muddy but I bet when it's clear it's easier to deal with. I had a few nervous moments when I almost hit stuff trolling around. I was there when the tide was goin out and almost low tide. No wind made it easier to manage too. I would guess at high tide you gotta be extra careful . That is my fave spot I have been to on the river. Even tho I only caught 3 bass out there , Im sure there are tons more in there and some giants at that. It was just a cool spot to fish imo. Only 1 other boat out there in the couple hours we were there.

fishing user avatarRockvilleMDAngler reply :

Mallows Bay is an awesome fishery but you can really damage a boat there if you don't know the layout of the wrecks.  The book "The Ghost Fleet of Mallows Bay" is an excellent read and has several good layouts of the locations of the barges which has been very helpful when fishing the wrecks.  During the summer you can have a hell of a time getting to the wrecks at low tide when the grass is really thick.  There are a few really nice spots in there that hold some monsters but you need to expect to lose lures and don't try going in to get that $10 crankbait off that innocent looking wood.

Sounds like Im gonna need to drag you out there with me one day so we can get on these monsters. Anyone else ever fished mallows bay ?

Ya I looked at some areial pics before I went out there. I'll go back there at some point when I decide to launch out of Aquia, it took me 30 bux in gas just to get there and back from leesylvania which seems like a waste to me. Here's a pic of my first snakehead which I caught yesterday in mattawoman

Out of hope springs? Isn't like 20$ to launch out there, or is there another ramp in aqua.

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

never heard of any ramp that costs that much to launch. I know leesylvania charges around 13 bux on the weekends and 8 bux during the week. I have an annual pass which is the way to go. Can someone chime in and maybe clarify ? What are the ramp choices in Aquia and how much do they cost ? Either way I rather save the wear and tear on my boat and outboard and launch much closer instead of makin a 10 mile round trip. Aquia is better fishing then anything further up north anyways, fewer snakeheads to deal with too from what I hear.

fishing user avatarLdavis reply :

If I remember correctly Hope Springs in Aquia is $15 on weekdays and $20 on weekends to launch

fishing user avatarVABasser reply :

Yeah pretty sure they raised the price to $20 on weekends from $15 last year.  Weekdays are still $15 I think.  Absolute ripoff, I refuse to launch there.  Further back in Aquia there is another marina you can put in called Willow Landing.  Been maybe 2 years since I've been there, but at the time launch was $10.  But if you are burning $30 in gas just on the run from Leesylvania to Mallows your outboard must get some terrible gas mileage

OK I should clarify bout the gas mileage. I put 9 gallons in one of the tanks that was empty, went from leesylvania to mattawman, then to mallows bay and then back to leesylvania and used just about all the 9 gallons I had put in. It's a 1992 johnson 200 gt and it gets probably around 1mpg. Sux but that's what an old carbed 2 stroke does on a 20 foot boat.

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

the water was crazy low all day which made me nervous bout crossing the river but I did it anyways. Paid off, me and my buddy both caught a few decent fish. Biggest was 4 pounds and a few 3 pounders along with a few dinks and a striper I caught in 15 feet of water on a crankbait.

I rather avoid those 3 footers if at all possible. You were right tho when you said the water level made for some good fishing. If only I found the pattern and location I was in sooner before the sun set I could have caught alot more 3-4 pounders, maybe even a 5+. Always happens to me when I go out, I start off slow and then start to catch on, by then it's time to leave. Such is life

fishing user avatarRockvilleMDAngler reply :

Launched out of Pohick by myself around 10:30 (late start thanks to catching up on sleep following a 2-day Deep Creek Lake tournament) and fished the right shoreline out to the main river pitching jigs and blue fleck power worms to standing timber.  Caught 6 fish biggest was 3lbs then went accross the river to Pomonkey where I caught 4 2-pounders at the grass at the mouth.  Decided to go back into Pomonkey and caught 8 bass from 1.5 to 2.5 pounds on a speedcraw.  On the way out I pitched a sweet beaver to a laydown log right accross from all the beached party boats having a great ol time, a big fish inhaled it and I got her to the boat but when I went to lip her my hand bumped the hook and she was able to shake out of my grip.  She looked to be every bit of 7 pounds.  I was crushed.  Went back to Pohick where I took two dinks off the dolphins at the Navy pier.  Headed home at 4:30.

Wasn't able to get bit on a crankbait, chatterbait, spinnerbait, frog, or popper but the soft plastic bite was definitely on.  I talked with some people who had done well on walk-the-dog baits but I never tried one.

fishing user avataregolfer reply :

Sounds like a great day.  Sorry about the biggun' you lost.

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

Marc- You still had a good day tho considering your best limit was probably close to 15 pounds. Sucks to lose a biggin so close tho.
