I live in frigid Minnesota and will be moving further south ASAP.....I am thinking Kentucky, Tennessee, or possibly another area. I'm retired so fishing and everyday living are my main concerns.....Any advice would be appreciated as to just where, what lakes or areas....I've never fished these places, so I need some pointers.....I'm a country boy , so rural small town living is my preference.....Decent bass fishing needed, of course......Thanks
Keep going further south my friend!!!!
Jeff
If you like the seasons east tennessee is pretty awesome. Yeah we get some muggy weather in late summer but not much. And winters get cool but no hard water and the smallies bite well thru winter. I like in Knoxville area and have more water to fish within an hour than I can fish well.
Tight Lines
If you have the choice.. land between the lakes area is pretty nice.. TONS of fishing water.. we have all the seasons.. you might see a snow or two but we never really ice over..

Land Between the Lakes is a beautiful part of Kentucky and like rhino joe said, there is more available fishing waters then a single man could ever hope to cover. A large portion around LBL is not greatly developed so buying property will not cost you an arm and a leg.
Don't come too far south like so many folks do. 7am this morning it was 72 with 100% humidity. 84 by 9am. High of 90 yesterday will be the same today. Summer is much worse and its only fishable before 9am each day. Even then you are soaked to the bone with sweat. At least you guys can put more clothes on, I cant take more off without going to jail! West Tn. is my wish, maybe north Al.
Central or East TN if you are looking at TN. I live in the Memphis area and have to drive about a 100 miles to get to Pickwick Lake, which is where I like to fish. Personally, I would rather put up with the hot weather in FL than the cool or cold, depending on your perspective, in TN. We may not get -70 chill factors in the winter like MN, but if there is a chill factor of 40 or less these old bones don't like it!
Hey Charlie Brown, maybe we can swap homes!
come on down, mississippi or alabama will give you what you want.
winters maybe cold to us, they wont be to you.
water is open all year.
Florida, lots of freshwater and salt water is never far away. Weather has been beautiful here, hi 70's to low 80's, it does get cooler in Jan and Feb which is not to my liking.
Miami must be cooler than the s.w. coast is, its 240pm and 89 degrees. This is the hottest Dec in memory each year it gets hotter. They are catching bonefish here and in 55 years here they had never been north of the keys/biscayne bay.
In summer when the water hits the upper 80s the bass are add hard to catch as they are up in those frozen lakes. and our summers are 8 months long.
the problem with Florida nowadays is it is basicly a suburb of new york.
Amen
Kentucky lake is pretty awesome ay time of the year. Would not be a terrible place to live.

You are pretty much describing West Tenn weather 5-6 months a year. It gets hot 90-100+ and very humid here from May-sometimes Oct. Winter is hit or miss. One day 10 degrees and the next it may be 75. I had some of my best fishing ever last winter after 52 years living here.
You could always try Missouri lol. Table rock really comes to mind but you wouldnt be far from bullshoals lake. We do have every kind of season though. Summers can get blistering hot and winters equally cold. But fishing can still bet done fairly comfortably up into mid November. Like a lot of lakes around the midwest area the best bass fishing is usually February to May but you can really have good fishing anytime of the year on the rock.
Thanks for all the suggestions.... Now I'm lookin at all my maps....Hmmmm!
I live in Tulsa, so I am unbiased. My recommendation would be to look at the TVA chain of lakes. Probably the best all round weather, all year. My first choice would be in the Pickwick, Wheeler, or Wilson Lakes area. It may get a little chilly in the winter, but there are few mosquitoes to worry about in the summer.
Maine is a paradise except for the ice on the lakes.......I'd summer here and winter in Northern CA, or even Canada (Vancouver Is. if they'd let me in!) I love wilderness, but wilderness often comes with harsh winters. As SirSnookalot says, old bones don't like that! But I do remember how mild Tennessee was!

I've been visiting the area just east of you looking for a new home. Went last July/August and the humidity wasn't nothing like home. By 6pm it was pleasant, here its still in the 80's through the whole night and windows don't get opened till January. They close by the end of March.
I moved to SC from WV, much better climate for me. I'm an hour from Murray, and an hour and half from Clarks Hill and the Santee chain. I would look hard at Texas. Drier climate in areas, bigger bass. I don't know what u call rural, the County my Mom lives in (WV) doesn't have a red light.

Big difference between New York state and NYC, the state is beautiful with lots of outdoor recreation and there just isn't any place just like NYC, it's a wonderful place. South Florida fits me well, coming from an urban area I appreciate a lot of the NY influence here, food, entertainment, Broadway and cultural activities, a bonus for me is the diverse ethnic population. I just love Miami Beach, had a second home just north since the 80's before being here full time. I'm in Delray only because of gr children, further south would have been more to my liking. But it isn't for everyone, I'm a city boy at heart.

Last summer was abnormally cool with less humidity than I have ever experienced. If it's climate change I hope it stays like that. It was not a typical West Tn summer by any means.

You can have it.
Snook I get that.
I only posted my comment because OP was looking for more a small town living.
Florida while great for many styles of fishing might not be to his liking lifestyle wise.
Give me a cabin on the TN River.
This fall we traveled from Florida to Lake Superior. In our opinion at least,
the two most beautiful states we traversed were Wisconsin followed by Kentucky.
As for Florida, it has a charm all its own that compares to no other state.
To avoid urbanity, high prices and congestion, get away from both coasts (Gulf & Atlantic)
and head to Florida's interior peninsula, (plenty of podunk towns).
You say you like fishing? Pick your poison, freshwater or saltwater.
Roger
Plenty of great fishing in east TN. More lakes than you can keep up with.
Louisiana.
Both salt and fresh water fishing at its best.
And you can contact Catt and fish Toledo Bend.
Plus the food is great!
Get a place on the upper end of Tellico lake in TN; you can fish for a multitude of species, and the scenery is great.
Louisiana? I grew up there, but would never retire there. The humidity is brutal, and every living creature bites. Family and food keep drawing me back.

How do I find this area on a map? I'm also retired and would like to find a good fishing area with a low cost of living index.
I'm all about Cookeville, TN. 1 hour 15 minutes from Percy Priest, 1 hour to Old Hickory, 50 minutes to Dale Hollow, 30 minutes to Center Hill, 35 minutes to Cordell Hull, 45 minutes to Cumberland River, 30 Minutes to Caney Fork River. 50 minutes to Great falls lake and Collins River. Cookeville is extremely cheap to leave for the ammenities it has (ample shopping, places to eat, outdoor stores, hospital/clinics). Not prone to natural disasters either. I'm really happy with where I live.
That being said, if I were going to move it would be closer to Chattanooga. The fishing down there is better. As a city, I much prefer it to Nashville.
Land Between the Lakes has great fishing, but no scenery and nothing to do in that area. Small towns n' all.
Traveler - Land Between the Lakes is between Kentucky And Barkley Lakes in western TN/KY. Nice area, but it's not very scenic. Go outside of Knoxville/Maryville TN. Cheap, beautiful country and you can fish for whatever freshwater you want. You could even fish while tailgating to watch the most wonderful college team in the country...
Now you owe me a fishing trip... :-)

Don't come to South Florida, when I first became a snowbird in 1980 the cost of living was very reasonable, but that has changed. Our first place was on a saltwater lake that led into the ICW, fishing was really good then with a variety of species. If I were to move there are places in Florida I might pick other than where I'm at, I'm really attracted to Southern California too.
If you are a football fan and like rooting for your home team because they are winners, DON'T MOVE TO TENNESSEE

I spent an hour last evening on Google Earth looking around the Knoxville/Maryville area; the area has a good airport, hospitals, shopping, etc. It's worth a closer look. If I win the Mega-Millions tonight I'm gone...........
I could've bought a house off of West Millers Cove rd in Walland about ten years ago. If I had, I'd probably still be there.
Geez I thought The Land Between the Lakes was very scenic. Tons more so than concrete Florida. Paris seems like the small town I'd like to be part of and I found the bank fishing incredible the few weeks Ive been there exploring. I can only imagine the fishing would be better from a boat and roaming that river. Spent time east of Chattanooga/Cleveland area too. Scenic for sure but I never heard anything positive about the fishing in the Copperhill and Lake Blue Ridge waters. Just century old heavy metal pollution and tiny stocked trout.
Don't rule out Raleigh NC. Falls Lake, Harris Reservoir, Kerr Lake, Jordan lake. Nice city with four season and stuff to do but not a big city. Good jobs and airport.
Also the savannah river is Keowee, Hartwell, Russell, and Clarks Hills. All good lakes and some close enough to Murray and Santee Cooper with mild climates. Not alot of big towns around these lakes, but good fishing.
+1 for the Chattanooga, Tn area. Chic, Guntersville, and Pickwick are all close.

East TN...Knoxville area...Cherokee Lake, Norris Lake, Watts-Bar, Douglas Lake, Clinch River, Loudon Lake, etc... so many places to fish!

I've been looking at the Knoxville area on Google Earth; I've found ramps with lots of bass boats which tells me there must be clubs around the area. can you tell me what they make at Alcoa?

Not really familiar or either I don't quite understand what you're asking. I know that there is a nuclear power plant located in Oak Ridge, TN.
I was born & raised in the mountains & coal mining towns of Harlan County, KY, which is located right on the borders of VA & TN. After my mom & dad divorced my dad moved to Knoxville. He still lives in the east TN area.
I was a recruiter for the Marine Corps for 3 years & was stationed in Knoxville...by the way...I didn't volenteer to be a recruiter, I was "volen-TOLD!" lol.
Anyways, I fished Douglas Lake located in Sevierville, TN & it is a beautiful & wonderful lake. Growing up, we would travel from my home in Harlan County down to the lakes in east TN...mainly Norris & Cherokee...both great lakes for nearly any species & both have quality smallmouth in them.
I also fished Ft Loudon lake while I was on recruiting duty...but didn't enjoy it because of all the pleasure boat traffic. I don't mind pleasure boaters...but when they scream by right next to your boat as your trolling the banks...well, it makes me want to cast a Zara Spook at them so that I can hook them up & snag them off of their boat or jet ski! lol
Seriously, east TN is AMAZING! It is BEAUTIFUL & that's mine & my wife's dream area to retire in!
I lived in Knoxville for about 4 years until I relocated to Charlotte. As for local Bass clubs, I didn't get too involved with any while I was there, though I know there were several. On 1/5/2014 at 2:14 AM, Traveler2586 said:I've been looking at the Knoxville area on Google Earth; I've found ramps with lots of bass boats which tells me there must be clubs around the area. can you tell me what they make at Alcoa?
The Alcoa plant there (as best as I can recall) makes hot/cold, rolled, and ingot aluminum for various applications. I think the do a lot of recycling of aluminum cans, but that's about all I know of it.

Well, there *is* a small test reactor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, but the commercial (TVA) nuclear plant is down I-75 a bit (about halfway to Chattanooga) on the Watts Bar reservoir. Spring City is about the closest town to that plant. Watts Bar has some decent fishing pretty much year round.
There is another TVA Nuke plant farther south (near Soddy Daisy, just outside Chattanooga) on Chickamauga lake. Never fished there, so can't say.

Agree with all of the above. Beautiful place. Great place for fishing!
Alcoa makes aluminum. A lot of aluminum.

I was looking at the town of Alcoa and found a large plant that has train tracks going into a building; I know Alcoa produces aluminum products but I was wondering if this plant produced anything in particular like foil, cans, or sheet material. The plant is directly across Rte. 129 from McGhee airport.
I was actually thinking Maryville looked like a good area, it's close to the airport (good for when the kids want to visit) and medical facilities in Knoxville (us'in old timers need good medical facilities you know) and I found a good ramp 20 mi down Rte. 72.
I like where your head's at!
If all the above is a must have. Huntsville Al would fit the bill. Airport , NASA is there and miles of city. But water in town you can fish. Within 1.5 hours of Chattanooga and fishing there. Or the same to Tn and Pickwick Dam. Or 30 miles to Some of the best fishing around.
But if your hunting a low cost of living and no State income tax and fishing that is great. Pickwick, Counce Tn or near there is hard to beat. Not much here, Other then a paper mill, Small Pipe Steel mill, Million dollar boats.
But for an airport memphis is 1 hour 35 minutes away.

Me and the wife live in Solway..just outside Knoxville. Great neighbors, great fishing (all year)(winter my favorite) Do not want to move back to Oregon!!

Alcoa makes rolls of sheet aluminum for cans (beer, coke cans). They also pour small pigs to sell. They use to make raw aluminum from boxite ore, but they closed that part of the south plant in 2009. There is some decent fishing in that area, but I would highly recommend looking at the Chattanooga, Cleveland, Dayton triangle area. The fishing is 10x better.
