First Snakehead of the year 2024

fishing user avatarThai reply :

Went out to my spot for 2 hours today, ended up banging out 10 bass, 1 nice 1.5lb Crappie, a gold fish, and the first snakehead of the year! Caught her on a 4'6" ultralight rod with 4lb FC line, one hell of a fight let me tell you! At first I though I had tail snagged a carp with the crappie tube I was using but those doubts were soon put to rest when she came torpedoing out of the water, I immediate loosened up on my drag as I knew this fish could easily snap the line. I played with here for a good 8 minutes before my buddy landed her for me, she was dissected and her stomach contents examined, she was also full of eggs! If I had to guesstimate I'll be generous and say she was around 24" and 4lbs

Still dont get it..... ;D

fishing user avatarXLFISH reply :

Thats a good story to stick to. Hey I guess I wasted my time putting a heater in the tank when I had those fish in an aquarium. If they are surviving these harsh conditions I guess they are here to stay. About fifteen or twenty years ago they sold snake heads in pet stores. Unfortunetly we see the end result. Keep working those "Tubes". Hey speaking of tubes (again) the lure type this time, I ordered some 8 and 10 inch tubes called Tube Jr.'s from Reaction Strike that look like big bass candy. Check em out online.

The variety commonly sold in stores is the Giant, (Channo Micropeltes) which does require warmer water to survive, the Northern is a sub tropical species which is why they can survive our winters.

fishing user avatarNewAngler reply :

Ha.  Your accusations are quite ridiculous.

8 and 10 inch tubes? That's sick.

fishing user avatarXLFISH reply :

I figure five to seven inch swimbaits work so why not try them. Thai thanks for the National Goegraphic crash course on Snake Heads there. At least I wont leave here empty handed or headed should I say.

I'm always here for a crash course in Ichthyology if you need it  ;)

fishing user avatarA.Do? reply :

Nice catch!

and uh..I guess I'm slow cuz I don't get it either....

fishing user avatarXLFISH reply :

How big do those sweeties get? I have whacked some fish called Bowfin or commonly called Mudfish in the south that destroy some baits and put up a heck of a fight. They look similar. Bowfin get up to 18 or 20 pounds.

fishing user avatarXLFISH reply :

I wouldnt think you would have to be a stunt double in a Cheech and Chong movie to get that one. If you have never done tubes then lets move on. I think its clogged Thai.

So how big did you say?

fishing user avatarThai reply :

They can grow over 40" but round here 35-37" is usually where they max out at and those are the males, unlike bass the females typically stay smaller than the males, during the pawning seasons the females will get light and the snakelike pattern on them will really stand out whilst the males get really dark brown.

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

I guess he's implying that Thai was smoking the whacky tabaccy?

fishing user avatarXLFISH reply :

Good thing we are not on Jeopardy.

fishing user avatarDan: reply :

the hints aren't totally random on jeopardy.

fishing user avatarXLFISH reply :

I think I have maxed out on cough syrup and i will go read a chapter in Sowbelly, the quest for the world record bass. I read it every winter out of boredom. Its been a stone cold groove gentlemen. See ya in the big bass zone.

fishing user avatarThai reply :

Kebert Xela ;D

Alotof you probably wont get that

fishing user avatarXLFISH reply :

Go ask Alex when he's ten feet tall. White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplain. We can use Alex in place of Alice in wonderland. Who's burning at both ends now? The Vapors baby.

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

thats a pretty swete pic there Thai, I take it Brent took that pic ? I'm gonna have to get my big behind down there in the next few days and catch some too. Just got all my reels back from the reel guy and Im anxious to test'em out before I hit lake anna. Wheres the bass pics from today ?

fishing user avatarquanjig reply :

Wow Chris, be nice. Thai was nice enough to show me this magic spot as it is quite a sight to see!!  Some very nice fish in the mix. Thai, don't put up with any of the nonsense XL throws out here, he loves to stir the pot!!(that was funny) Chris is a big bass freak, he does not enjoy the 'lil ones. He's more likley to go fish somewhere that has the possibility of double digit fish. Chris, if you want to get into the big snakeheads it would be in your best interest to get ahold of these guys come summertime!!

fishing user avatarNewAngler reply :

Ha, i got it the first comment he made. XL seems to know Briery pretty well. I may be going down there come march, gotta get some deets on that place!

Nice catch!  I would say that fish goes more than 4lbs, but it always hard to tell from pics.  I caught this snakehead a couple years ago in Kains Creek and it was weighed at 8lbs.  I think the shape of their bodies makes their weight a little deceiving...

Nice catch! I was being generous like I stated, it's no more than 5 though, I've handled alot of SH's and weighed my fair share, I'm certain this one was 4 1/4, the picture just makes it seem a little bigger...

Here's a 36" from 06

Is it just the lighting or was that snakehead that dark?  I've never seen one so black

Big bull male in breeding dress, males get a dark brown while females get really light which makes their snakepeel pattern just pop

I got told that all the time, I still dont see it though...

If you havent caught one yet you're in for a treat when you do get bit, one of the better fighting fish in terms of strength, disposition to lures, striking power, speed, and aerial acrobatics!

Once the weather warms up I'm thinking of getting a NOVA Snakehead tourney going, I know of some primo places to catch double digit monsters, I'm sure we can get you hooked up on one!

When I caught the one in the pic, it was the first one I had ever caught so it was very unexpected.  I was fishing a senko and when I felt the bite and set the hook, all hell broke loose.  I thought to myself if this is a bass, it's without a doubt my new personal best.  As luck would have it, it was a personal best, just not the one I was looking for.

NovaAngler, I'm going to try out the Dobyn's tomorrow.  Flippin4it has a secret spot he says should be clear...  I'll let you know how it goes.  I got the Dobyns paired up with a Patriarch XT, nice and light.

Thai, if you throw a snakehead tourney, let me know that sounds like a lot of fun.  I've seen them brought in during our tourneys.  They look like they would make a great belt or boots.  Some even say they are delicious.

fishing user avatarBigs reply :

There's more to this Brandon Lee connection then you may think. Thai is actually a ninja which is how he sneaks up on these fish and fools them. I would love a snakehead tourney but I should probably learn how to catch a few first dont ya think

False. I was actually a top secret japanese military experiment to create the ultimate bio weapon that went awry when I escaped from the facilities and mutated to giant proportions and wreacked havoc to the surrounding towns and villages.

lol.... Come on guys! Ninjas are Japanese, and Brandon Lee was Chinese... And the name Thai is obviously niether... I was in the military a long time and no, no-one looks alike... I can tell Filipino from Korean to Okinowan.

Nice pic with Mount Fuji in background... Manong...
