Man, I don't know about you guys, but for the past two weeks I have not caught nothing. I have been using Jd's custom baits frogs and MW worms, culprits, senkos, you name it, i have been using it and I have been getting nothing other than a couple of bites. I went out to lox on Monday when there was a huge thunder and lightning storm and fished in the rain for about two hours, figuring it was a change of environment and I still got nothing. I have even changed my line from mono to braided and back again figuring to eliminate any variables. Last Saturday, my bro in law and a friend rented a boat at holiday park, and what a waste, you're not even allowed in the flats. Not one of us caught anything. Nothing. I have even tried some local canals and lakes around Margate and Coral Springs. Just hitting a huge dry spell. One of the longest. Just checking to see how you guys are doing out there. Maybe I need some new spots to fish.
About the same. I've caught 10 bass since june. Granted I haven't fished even a quarter of what I usually do. Four of em were this month.
It's always slow in the summer for bass. An old Florida saying " when the bass slow down the snook pick up", something is always biting down here. Why get frustrated when satisfaction is within your grasp. .......drive as far east as possible, then wet a line.
Yeah man, you guys are right. I'm in the market for a boat now, so I will just take my time and look. By the time I get a boat, the bass will be back out, and the weather won't be as unbearable. I think a lot has a lot to do with the water levels we have been having in the everglades as well.
During the day, try fishing the spill ways with a small scrounger with a fluke, a large black worm, or a big swim bait. Sometimes rattle traps work good. The bass are probably in the deepest water, or in areas where there is some increased oxygen - near running water. Early morning, top water, frogs, and crank baits.
I have been fishing at lox for years, it seems to me the hot summer months with high water, and constant pumping and back pumping messes up the patterns.
Just my .02
Robert (SouthFla) and I went to Lox yesterday afternoon. We didn't start fishing until ~4:30PM as the weather was fairly dicey in the early afternoon and we were on the fence whether to go or not. We dodged a couple of Irene's outer bands, but no real problems. Very comfortable fishing (78 degrees) and we caught a few fish. Rob got a nice 5lber.
ive fished 3 times out there in the past 2 months and caught only a mudfish and 3/4pound bass. and of course caught hell from the wife when i got home later than expected trying to catch "just one"
Yes, it's been tough in the Glades. All the major areas have rising and moving water. Plus the fish get scattered and into the flats. I have to see if I can in there and chase then down. Going to LOX in the AM and hoping for at least 5 bites as one of my clubs has a permit for a T in 2 weeks.
I'll be there at o'dark thirty with my five year old son, tomorrow morning. Give a holler at me if you see me, Dave. I'm pretty sure Rob (South Fla) and Jack (shallow thinker) will be out there as well.
Like Snook said, head for the salt. Best summer time fishing is in the BIG pond.
Are snook in the SUDS yet? I love getting up a the crack aXX of dawn and casting a spook parallel to shore! The refuge is NO GOOD, everyone should heed others ^^^^^^^^^ advice and fish elsewhere it is not worth the trip unless you are after muddies, pickerel, and gars ,............
it has been more miserable this summer than i can recently recall..... the water levels went from extremely low to high very quick.... constant pumping in and out, i'm hanging it up for a couple weeks.....
I thought the fishing would red hot but it wasn't. This storm came in on the incoming tide (we got a few tarpon) and it did not push in too much bait. I fished the beach a few times, but it was tough, 1 day the incoming seaweed made fishing near impossible and the last 2 days the incoming surf was surging very high, probably a 35 yd cast just to reach the water, only viable lure was a spoon. The snook should have been there with this ground swell but they weren't. I am finding some in the ICW and the inlet, but the incoming tide makes it a bit tougher. I did see some nice mutton being caught, about 25". I'm a die hard, I'll be back out again in a couple of hours, I'll be heading north to a great fishing beach first part of next week.

I was out there before that episode happened, it was closed yesterday.

The ol sarcasm meter pegged off the scale.
I had a monster day today at Lox. I was off the water by 10:00 with at least a 23lb bag. Only caught about a dozen, but size was very good. Two 3s, a 4, a 5 and an 8. The big one measured 8 on the boga, which I think is conservative. She was 24.5" long with a really fat 17" girth.
I really hit a nice bite today. If I'd a had a decent stick with me today, I think 30lbs was a definate possibility. I only fished ~3 hours and spent a lot of that time trying to get my five year old hooked up on a pig.
There is plenty of fish to be caught at Lox, if you put the effort. My last four trips have had at least one 5lber in the boat, including the two biggest fish I've touched this year (the other being, Jack's monster bass two weeks ago).
From what I saw, Robert and Dale tore em up out there today also.
Thats a pig! I see he was in the salad bowl.
Monster day...no kidding...Nice one piscicidal!
Anyone heading out to Lox on Sunday 8/28 morning?

Didn't know to look for you guys, I shut down the computer early last night. If you had the 5 year old out there I think we saw you (maybe even heard you when you caught a biggie). I was the Green/Silver on Bone Triton with the steroidal Riptide 101. We had a good day too. Not huge numbers but an 8, a 5, a couple 4s and a 2 so maybe 22-23 also. Are one of the group the Hewes? We had a nice conversation with that guy. Need to learn LOX better though. What a resource so close by!
I pull up to the northern most ramp expecting to see NO ONE and was surprised to see Dale in the water. I had an average day (10 total), my biggest pushed close to 5. Most of my fish came off canal edge, fished the flats, but when I got there the bite must have died or I was in the wrong spot , caught fish on just about everything though, frog, dipper, spinnerbait and lipless. Took of picture of Dale holding up a six pounder on the way, back. I kept jonesing though for a big'un since Mike and Dale were sending me text pics, boy was it hot after about 9:30, I have to cool off Sunday, if not I would be out there. By the way I was in a white Ranger with blue stripes and a Yamaha hanging off the back.
Dale post that pic!
I heard from two of my fishing friends....a guy got a 37-38# sack today at the Holy Lands. All I know is that my wife is going to Canada next week and I'll be pulling a 4 day fishing binge. Lox and the Holy Lands are on the my list.

Yeah, I think I saw you out there. I was in a white Hewes. There was also another guy with a Hewes just like mine, fishing by himself.
Sounds like you got the five good bites you were looking for and then some...
shane,
38 lbs is just sick. I haven't even seen a 7lber out of there in awhile, much less a 7lbs average.
Look forward to your report.
Hell, wish I could have made it out today. I appreciate getting the call from you, Robert. Just had to get finished moving my shop into the new building. Maybe next time. Sounds like you all had a darn good time out there today. Way to get on em.

37#'s at the Holy lands...... I haven't been there in a year, I might have to check in up there.... Thanks
It was hot this morning. I hit the beach at 4:45 am and didn't wait too long, like my first cast. I went thru entire bag (12) of DOA jerk shads, must have caught around 100# of snook and 30 pounds of tarpon.
I was out of bait, went back to my car to get a windcheater and caught several more off the jettie.
Snook, that's great. Maybe I can meet you down there Monday morning.
The season opens in a few days so you better catch what you can now. You know the snook shut down just as soon as the season opens.
Yeah i had a fun day too. Ran to the flats and caught four in the AM then that bite died completely. Better fish came in the canals. Started pitching and getting good bites. Caught between 15 and 20. A couple 3's, a 4.5 and a 6.5. Credit to Robert for the boat side pic of the 6.5.
Nice fish Dale!
Boy, I picked the wrong weekend to be at work. Looks like a bunch of big fish got caught.
Great pics, Dale.
WOW!. You absolutley slayed'em in this heat. Way to go.

The slots shut down for sure, lol
I'll probably stop by an ICW spot before I get to the inlet at around 4 am , fish the south jettie for an hour on the incoming see if maybe any tarpon are around, they love the fast current. Then I'll hit the beach, probably on the north side, good snook hole there.
Ok. Unless I fall asllep, I'll be on the beach, north side, at 5am. My hat will be on backward so you'll be able to fnd me.
I'm leaving in the next 30 minutes I want the last of the outgoing tide. Hope the water isn't too low on the north side, if so the south beach has plenty of water with a good drop off, not as many snook but they can be bigger there. I'll find you.

Nive fish Dale. Robert does take good pictures.

Thanks. You too!
Youre not alone. I live in parkland, about 20 minutes away from lox. Fishing everywhere from local canals to holiday park to lox, the bass are playin hide and seek. The surface temp of the water is just to hot. They dig down deep in the burrows in search for more cooler water. Fish outside edges or anywhere wheres theres running water. Be sure to use something that will get down deep where ever you are. Rapala deep divers are key for this time of year. Always the same story in South Florida - when it gets scorching temp's, fishing is dead. Just fish the ground with anything you've got. In about 45-60 days fishing should gradually pick up as the temp outside should lower. Best of luck and tight lines.
PS… im always asking for spots to fish in Lox or holiday park. Anybody can suggest some new spots? Thanks.

At Holiday Park, take the middle canal west to the Miami canal and head north. It is usually good up there although I have not fished there in a couple of months.
The fishing out west on the alley is usually good too. Also try the fingers along US 27 north of the bend in the road. At the fingers, fish the drop offs where the canals intersect. As far as Lox, try the deep water around the spillway levees and also run west past the bend and fish the hydrilla salad bowl. The bass try to keep cool under the weeds. Fish early morning at first light for the best bite.Just my .02. good luck.
I live in Coral Springs BTW..
Glades, those are spots I usually have some success at too but it has been rough out of Holiday. The earlier reports about Holeylands are good and a bunch of us have had some success at Lox. But even at Lox it's like a bite per 75-100 casts. I really don't think it's water temps but more the higher and moving water (except at Lox).Water temps down here and at the Lake are in the mid-80s and most of us have seen much higher than that this time of year. There is a tricky time every year where it seems when the fish scatter from their usual locations to either the flats or in deep holes. It's just tougher and you have to adjust expectations and use it as a learning process.
I went to Lox this morning for a couple hours before work (8:30- 11:00). The bite was not as good as Saturday, for me. There was zero wind and the fish were more skittish. I was able to scrape up a half dozen fish, though, including a 5 and a 3. I lost a really nice fish just as I was leaving...big ol horse that dug down into the weeds and got away. He was well over 5lb.
Fishing is tough, but I've been lucky enough to stay on these fish for a couple weeks now. Today was my fifth straight trip at Lox with at least one +5lb. Dave hit on a very important tip...watch the water temp and adjust your fishing. You're not going to catch much throwing a fast moving bait in 88 degree water on the flats.
Every time I plan to go there someone tells me they didnt catch much. I caught 8 in my dads lake the other day...Ill stick to fishing there, the fish attack bait like they are under famine. I see a few spots off of southern and in wellington that look great. I tried one for about an hour and caught 1 bass and got hammered by a gar

Hey Sal, I haven't been fishing much this year(health, family, work) so I was giving general suggestions to the OP. I apologize to the OP if my suggestions are not current to the conditions. I agree with you about Lox, you have to wear out your arm casting, but if you have patience and adjust to the conditions of the day, you will usually get a decent bass or three. The water temps have been cooler because of the clouds and rain. It definitely helps keep the bugs down too. This time of year I fish slowly and deep, looking for current ledges or some structure, or look for holes in the deeper water hydrilla, or deeper water adjacent to hydrilla. I know a couple areas like that at Lox. Not very sophisticated, but it seems to work for me.
Have you tried the eeliminator out at Lox? I ordered some from TW for the suitcases.

The neighborhood lakes are a good bet. There are some huge bass in some of the older canals.

I find that if your waiting for a good report then you missed the bite.

Man, don't apologize to anyone. We are all trying to figure it out and those are usually very good spots so I'm sure, least of all me, anybody's gonna critique any constructive thoughts. I'm the goof at Lox-just haven't put the time in up there. Banged these canals down here and then when the Lake got hot spent all my time up there so Lox got passed by in my learning curve. We went up there on Saturday and caught some good ones but I have no confidence "I'm on fish". Going to Cali for 6 days starting tomorrow so need to get up there a day or two before my T at Lox on the 10th. (and spend more time there in the future) And...gotta get some of those snakes and eeliminators
Thanks guys for all the posts. I actually have been extremely busy with my wife expecting our second one, which is a boy this time! I actually got to go out behind my house in the lake on Saturday for about an hour. All I used were red shad culprits and second cast boom. caught a 3 pounder. not that big but decent. About 15 minutes later I caught a 4.5 pounder. Nice size bass. It was a great day after that. If I would have stayed out longer I probably would have kept roping them. It was about 1:30 in the afternoon, but at least I found a good spot. It sure was hot out that day.
Capt. Shane is right. If you wait for the report you missed the bite. I would rather not get anything and then have a good day every once in a while. There is always some good and some bad especially in the summer down here because of the heat and the water levels.
