Sandy River Reservoir 2024

fishing user avatarluv2fish33 reply :

To all my fellow Va fishermen out there, if you guys have never fished Sandy River Resivour, do yourself a favor a try it out. I fished there for the first time on Monday with a buddy of mine. Together we caught around 20 bass, i was the lucky one and caught the biggest a 4 pounder. We fished from the boat dock all the way back to the standing timber and caught fish everywhere we went, mainly on pumpkin seed worm wacky rigged. I highly reccomend this place, on top of the heavy action it is a beautiful place to take in wildlife scenery.

fishing user avatarWayne P. reply :

I fished it the first day it was opened to fishing when there was just a muddy road leading to the ramp. In recent years I can't seem to force myself to choose that lake over Briery Creek unless it is Winter.

fishing user avatarAluma-Bass reply :

sandy is a great place!! I go there when i dont feel like dealing with the stumps at briery  I also like watching the bald eagles! Fishing is great there with alot of good size fish! But at times can get packed and every turn you make there is a boat...i guess same with briery but overall i love both sandy & briery! B)

fishing user avatarRippinglips reply :

Ive been wanting to fish sandy river for a while now. Is it a hp restricted lake like briery as well or all electric

fishing user avatarWayne P. reply :

Sandy River Res. has the same 10hp gas motor limit as Briery Creek Lake.

fishing user avatarRippinglips reply :

Gotcha thanks wayne. I heard they pull some nice ones outta sandy river...

fishing user avatarluv2fish33 reply :

I caught a 4 pounder in the standing timber. Was talking to a oldtimer at the boat ramp and he told us a guy caught a 13 pound bass a few weeks ago bank fishing.

fishing user avatarRippinglips reply :

Lol man how I could only wish to hook into a 13lb bass

fishing user avatarWayne P. reply :

Landing a fish in that size class is a lot more probable at Sandy than at Briery. Hooking one in that class is a higher probability at Briery.

fishing user avatarAluma-Bass reply :

would be cool for someone like " Hook N Look " to hold a show at briery or sandy so we could see all the monster bass and where they are holding from a underwater view! I bet you find schools of 13+ pounders swimmin around B)

fishing user avatarluv2fish33 reply :

That would be awesome to see HookNLook film at show at either place.

fishing user avatarTallent88 reply :

lets get over 16.4 !!!!!!! come on briery or sandy river !!!

fishing user avatarRippinglips reply :

Its going to hppen in the nxt yyr or so I elieve

fishing user avatarReel_Kaotic reply :

Anyone on here have any suggestions on how to approach Sandy River? First trip out this weekend, so I'm looking at least some direction.

fishing user avatarAluma-Bass reply :

I fished sandy for couple hours this weekend...caught 12bass all under 3lbs. All came off weightless soft plastics in about 3-6ft of water! I seen lots of bream beds but no bass beds.

Kaotic Ive had good luck with top-water EARLY in the morning...i also have good luck with cranks and lip-less cranks as well. The pads and vegetation is starting to come up also. Most my fish came off some type of structure w/ wood in relation to deep water. I did see some big females that were skiddish on the flats and would take off at sight of boat or movement. Good luck i think you will love this place!! There is some standing timber on upper & lower end of lake along with small cypress?? trees coming out of water in several locations that have paid off for me. I used mostly soft plastics this last outing bc i was to lazy to crank ;)

fishing user avatarReel_Kaotic reply :

@Aluma-Bass: Thanks for the info. Didn't think many people on here would share some pointers on water producing trophy bass. Thank! I'm looking forward to my first fishing trip there, hopefully Friday is not crowded on the water. Is the lower end to the right or left of the ramp? Should I be weary of stumps in most of water? I plan to use gas motor to get around. And how early can you launch?

fishing user avatarJoe D reply :

Just to add to what has been said, and just FYI, on friday the lake will be PACKED. Probably hard to find a parking spot. I have been going mostly on tuesdays and thursdays so far this spring and it still has 30 trucks in the parking lot, though some belong to shore fisherman. As far as getting around, you will not have any problem hitting stumps. Just don't ride to close to the shore. From the ramp you can go left or straight. There is standing timber to the left and if you go straight and then left down the creek arm you will find more timber. But there are plenty of fishy looking places along the way. Have fun

Joe

Cool thing about sandy open 24/7! So as early as you can get up! Unless you go into the timber fields you wont run into much stumps as you would briery, main lake is pretty wide open. It does have a good amount of lay-downs. The ramp IS kinda the lower end of the lake...as you come out of ramp the dam will be over to the left you can also go under the bridge you see and fish that section..some timber is in the back there. Also about mid lake you will see a cove to the left that will lead you on around to the timber in the backside. It all looks great out there Ive caught fish all over the lake. i may also go on Friday but got to wait till later in the week to be able to decide on that. Make sure your legal as wardens at times do hit the area hard but they usually check the usual and move on bc they have a lot more boats to check!! Remember 9.9hp ;)

Also one day think about hitting Briery up while your in the area as its not far from sandy at all...

fishing user avatarAluma-Bass reply :

and to add to the parking...if you get there early you wont have a prob it does get packed but ive always found a parking spot. I do notice after about 8-9am parking lot is packed then after about 1-2pm all your morning guys leave then you get your evening crowd start coming in shortly after. The ramps are great though...2 ramps and people are pretty good at putting in/taking out fast so it moves quick.

fishing user avatarReel_Kaotic reply :

@Joe D: Thanks for the insight. If everything goes to planned, I'll be there before sunrise.

@Aluma-Bass: Hopefully I'll see you out there. Everything is legit. My motor is only 8hps, I'm excited I can bring it...save some battery power. I heard about Briery before I heard about Sandy. That too is on the bucket list for the year.

fishing user avatarReel_Kaotic reply :

Now the weather forecast is looking like showers on Friday afternoon. Considering venturing out on Saturday. May still go Friday, if weather stays light rain.

fishing user avatarAluma-Bass reply :

yea im seeing 40% chance of rain/ t-storms Fri...ive gone on days with forecast like this and it turned out a nice day and glad i made decision to still head out...and ive had days where ive been caught in down poors  . Hard to determine unless you just go...but sat does look better!

fishing user avatarReel_Kaotic reply :

Looking as though the rain showers are not coming until late in the afternoon. If we get there early enough, we'll be on the road when it's expected to start. News says only light showers, either way, I'm going. Loading the vechicle tonight!

fishing user avatarAluma-Bass reply :

yea looks like Fri is only day i have free this weekend...with my best friends wedding on sat, and my other best friend kid b-day on sunday, not to mention mothers day! Really i just want to FISH all weekend but gotta pay my dues/ respect ;)

fishing user avatarReel_Kaotic reply :

Same here, everyday this booked with something. Taking the day off to go tomorrow. Just hopefully the lot is not full.

fishing user avatarAluma-Bass reply :

i should be out there, im gonna say around 630ish in the morning. Taking one of my younger buddies with me...Ill try to look out for you while im out there if i dont see ya at the ramp. You WILL get a parking spot...dont worry

Not sure if you remember but ill be in 14ft Tracker Grizzly. Ill be the guy sitting on the boat deck with a 40oz beer in one hand and rod in other. haha jk :D

looks to be a colder morning!

fishing user avatarReel_Kaotic reply :

Great, I'll be on the blue/silver SeaNymh, trolling everything from the rear. See you out there.

fishing user avatarReel_Kaotic reply :

I had a great time out Sandy. We only pulled in 3 bass, but the scenery was the best. We got out just as the rain started. I can see why it's a bass heaven. We're looking forward to going back...very soon. Here's one of the fish I caught.

fishing user avatarReel_Kaotic reply :

Pocahontas is sleeper. There are huge bass out there. We can definitely get up and hit both locations. I didn't weight the fish, but I would say it was close to it. Pocahontas may be on the radar for next weekend. I have some new spro frogs I'm dying to use and some old ribbits for backups. As for Sandy, seems like every spot you looked at housed a bass.

fishing user avatarRippinglips reply :

Nice bass looks like bass havven out there lol

fishing user avatarTallent88 reply :

Your a jig man now huh you bn snagging some fish with them jigs

fishing user avatarReel_Kaotic reply :

Bass heaven! I'm loving jigs now. All the bass we caught, all were on swim jigs and trailers. Letting the jigs swim and then die every few feet. Since that day out powhatan, I've been hooked on using jigs and using them a lot now. Yesterday, I threw a spinnerbait for the first time this year.

fishing user avatarhookingem reply :

I told you about the frog..... ;) good fish congrats!

fishing user avatarReel_Kaotic reply :

Thanks...I'm hitting them with the Spro's next time, veggies should be fully blown in a couple weeks. Jigs will be in the back pocket to follow up.

fishing user avatarAluma-Bass reply :

we got out about 715am fished till 1pm caught about 15 bass between us both. Most of ours came off soft plastics, couple off cranks. My buddy was catching his mainly off t-rigged lizards. I caught most mine off wacky rig and 2 off cranks. Buddy caught biggest off lizard at about 4lbs. Turned out to be nice day other then wind picking up making white caps on main lake.

fishing user avatarAluma-Bass reply :

gonna hit it up in the morning for about half day!! ;)

fishing user avatarluv2fish33 reply :

Nice catch there Kaotic1 the fist time there at sandy was enough to get me hooked on that place. Now all I need to do is get my own boat and get back there again.

fishing user avatarReel_Kaotic reply :

Thanks, I'm back out there first chance. Like the next few weeks, actually. Everywhere you turn looks like the ideal spot to house bass.

fishing user avatarluv2fish33 reply :

kaotic1 when my buddy and I went we basicly got on the boat and made a left from the boat dock and fished the dock all the way to the standing timber, we caught bass in every cove and every spot we went, of course the bass got bigger once we got into the standing timer.

fishing user avatarReel_Kaotic reply :

luv2fish33: That was my plan for the next time I went out there. We shot to the upper end of the lake and fished the timber there and worked our way back. As you can see, we didn't do to well. Did you fish the rip-rap on your way to the other timber or just the hangover brush? I had hard dialing to what the fish wanted, however it was my first time there.

fishing user avatarAluma-Bass reply :

late report but been busy this week....

5/13

Fished from 730am - 1pm...i caught 10 bass total all under 4lbs. Several in 3-4lbs range. I was flipping a beaver style bait into heavy cover or along the steep rock walls in back section and started hooking up. All but 1 fish came off beaver, other was wacky rig senko caught on lower end of lake.

fishing user avatarluv2fish33 reply :

Sorry it took me a while to reply kaotic1 been a crazy week here..Yes we fished the rip-rap and the hangover brush and had luck with both...Everything we caught was off a wacky rig.

fishing user avatarAluma-Bass reply :

5/27

Fished from 730am to 1pm...caught around 10 bass, biggest at 18''. All caught off soft plastics. Cloud cover helped...as soon as sun came out of clouds after about 11am bite died. I stayed on lower end all day.
