If so where at and what's been working for ya? Got the day off tomorrow. Thinking about hitting maybe the rapp because it's nearby.
I haven't been since Thursday. That was to Briery Creek Lake.
What was "working" is what I selected to use since I base my selection on the conditions.
It isn't about the lure, it is matching the presentation to the conditions.
Weedless wacky rigged finesse worm, shakey head finesse worm, crankbait.
Went to Sandy River with a friend two days ago. Got a few but not on fire. Really been slow on SML and Leesville as well. Looking for suggestions on how to fish this time of the year if anyone is willing...
We've been having some good success lately. All these fish were caught by my daughter & I with in the last week at Powhatan Lakes. Caught 20+ fish over 4lbs in a 3 day span. Biggest being 6.13 on a Rapala scale.

What a great time when your kid kicks your butt!!
Or maybe it's that she's smaller than you and the fish look that much bigger! LOL
I got a chance to hit Newport News Park waters here earlier this past week. Caught several bass, biggest at 2 pounds. Most of the fish lately have been 2.5 and down. Hunting the big ladies though, caught so many between 4 - 6.6 pounds this year. Fishing Jika rig, Mojo, wacky weightless and weighted.
do you have to have any type of permisson to fish powhatan lakes and can you take a jon boat out there with a trolling motor?

They are public Lakes, electric only. Yes Jon boat is what I use.
Thanks everyone! Ain't nothing like sharing those memories with my daughter. Glad she was with me when the bite was on....I find the pattern and I have her copy it and then it turned into a competition. She wants to fish tournaments with me,how cool is that!
I also had a chance to fish Powhatan Lakes. I didn't do as well as Aluma-Bass but I did manage to catch one over 4 pounds. I fished today from 10:30 to 1:00.
Great pics and stories. And I am stuck at home with a knee replacement and can't fish until next year.
Jacob, glad to see you caught a nice one on One Fish Anna.
Aluma, great post and pics. Wonderful that you have introduced bass fishing to your daughter.
I can't wait to take my grandson fishing one day and show him the beauty of nature and the fun of hunting for those little green monsters.

Take your Glock and just troll along the shore and sooner or later you will see one and nail it!!!!
Been catching em on the James on just about everything mainly cranking and jigging deep drops or flipping shallow close to deep water that has been key for us and just keeping our heads down and fishing !
is powhatan lake a public lake and can you launch there?

yes and yes
sorry one more question i was wondering if you had to have a lincese to fish it because i no some places like some lakes in lousia you got by like a 10 dollar pass to fish it for a year
You just need a VA state freshwater fishing license.

Might want to double check but you probably still need a VA license to fish the majority of those lakes in addition to the $10 to fish pass.

That would be Gordonsville Lake (Bowlers Mill) and Northeast Creek Lake. Those are locality permits. You still need a state fishing license if you are 16 years old or older.

Great catches! That looks like the upper lake right?
Yes, those fish came from top lake.
Thinking about hitting the double secret pond with lipless crankbaits this Saturday.
Then maybe not.
Conflicted.

do they fight as good as they say they do ?
Meh, I've only caught 2 so my experience is limited. Sounds a little fruity but they're just real wiggly!
I know that warmwater discharge (I think)...lots of carp? was he directly across from where you walk up under the weeds or was he near the overhead structure? There's usually one on the far bank. As far as fighting, they seem a lot like pike to me. Real good initial burst and power but then they just kind of roll over. They are delicious though.
It's not four mile run!!
I know...and I assumed you weren't bank fishing Blue Plains...there's only a few left after that...and only one has that mud.
South of old town, north of Belle Haven!
Too much info! Preserve the Aquarium from the fly fishers!
I took some casts in the neighborhood lake and caught a few small bass today
I am hoping to head up to the AP hill ponds or the Pamunkey tomorrow...should be fun managing my kayak in 20 MPH winds

How do you season them and how do you like to cook em ?
Either sliced into strips and fried or kept in bigger chunks (it helps to catch bigger ones) and grilled. Usually just salt and pepper, but I have put Old Bay in my breading mix before. They're more of a meaty texture and pretty sweet like lobster.
Those are some great fish in all those pics (both posters)! Also, it's great to see another person sharing the outdoors with kids!
I've been fishing with my son since he's been old enough to walk...he's 14 years old now.
One of my greatest fishing memories was when him & I were bluegill fishing in a base pond aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. He was almost, but not quite, 3 years old at the time. Well, we only had one fishing pole...which was one of those small rod/reel combo for kids. We were using canned corn as bait & I was the one casting & catching (hooking) the fish. I would hook the bluegill & then let him real them in.
The can of corn was open & sitting on the ground. I was concentrating on a few bluegill that were messing around with the bait, waiting for one of them to take the bait into its mouth. All of a sudden, in a sweet little childs voice I hear, "Ummmm...that's good daddy." When I look down to see what he's talking about, I find my son eating the canned corn by the hands full! LOL
Well, 10 years later my now 13 year old son (now 14) gave me another one of my greatest fishing memories when he caught & landed his personal best large mouth, a 4 1/2 pounder. He caught it while fishing topwater (Zoom Horny Toad) in the Meherrin River. He's came a long way from Spongebob, Super Man, Batman, & Dale Earnhardt Jr rod/reel combos. He now uses baitcasters & is pretty good at many types of artificial lure techniques. I've got a fishing partner for life!
Keep up the good work with those kids...the memories are worth far more than any fish I've ever caught!
Super story.
Waiting to take my two grand kids fishing.
The boy is 3 and the girl 18 months.
I told their parents they have to be able to swim before I take them to pond or on the boat.
The 3 year old may take swimming lessons this summer.
Thanks for your service. We sincerely appreciate your efforts on behalf of all Americans, even the misguided ones.
Fished Lake Anna last Friday - caught four missed two.
Largest was caught on a texas-rigged PowerTeam Lures Conviction Craw and the other three were caught on a weedless jighead and PTL JP Hammershad. In my haste to get on the water, managed to forget to charge the batteries in my camera....sorry no pics, but nothing to be too proud of either. Nothing over 16", but the 16"er was stout for his size.
SSgt Hoskins , Cool story and thanks for sharing , I am a proud supporter of our military and I know you hear this a lot but thank you !!!
Hanover-Yakker , Great to hear you got out to Anna and had some fun !! where did you go ? down by Dike 3? Private side ?

I was on the warm water side (working for big D has its advantages ) and working the rocks. I saw two massive bass easily over 22" just sitting in the eddies, but they were not in a feeding mood. When the fat 16" hit, I saw three other 17"+ bass get excited and follow him to the surface. They were hanging deep.
I love working the rocks near dike 1 - you can use one or two lures all day and catch a fish on almost every cast.
Gotta love fishing in 30 degree weather and water temps in the 70s still.

There is a little cove at the beginning of dike one on that side , the point that is just before the dike wall that leads into that cove has always produced some good quality fish for me , I love Anna !!
