Just curious if there are any Bass fishing kayaks in the northern virginia area.. I know of some of you, but I was wondering if any of you have pics to share as well! I will have some pics up this week of mine!
I kayak fish pretty often and have two buddies, SimonSays and a friend not on the forum, that fish with me often too. Are you looking for rigging pictures or fishing pix? or both?
Both would be great! I often see how Jon Boats are hooked up on this site, but not many kayaks.. Just want to see where this goes..
Funny thing, I haven't taken a pic of my yak fully loaded, I'll get one tomorrow!
here's a pic of a 1lb smallie I caught today and a little peak of the pedaling system Skip and I have.
Very nice, I can't wait to take a picture of the yak this wk
Hey guys,
Here's a pic from my kayak. I've improved the rigging and will post a pic soon. I'd love to see how some of you're rigging.
Has anyone installed a anchor trolley? I've been spinning in the wind and think a trolley will help out.
Rich, I've been thinking about getting the anchor trolley and a drift shute but haven't committed to getting one yet.
I'm going out this weekend with my girlfriend if you guys are interested in fishing the upper potomac.
What day are you planning on going and when?
I'm trying to juggle a few things so I can get optimal fishing this weekend and the U.P. is definitely one place I've been waiting to fish.
im planning on getting a kayak when i move back to the arlington area in spring. im looking into either the native ultimate or native manta ray. what kinds do you guys have?
thanks

Hobie Sport
I just got a manta ray 12 and am loving it
I too have decided that a Kayak is the best option for me to get out on the water considering my lifestyle and the vehicles i currently own. I have never used a Kayak before and dont realy know what options are available or what manufacturers are known for their quality.
I think I am stealing this post, let me do some more searching and I will post a new topic with some questions.
Hey guys
If its ok with you guys I'd love to tag along on sunday. How's the water there. Calm or choppy? Fast slow etc... I've never been there.
really depends on the river and the rainfall it gets. the first time i was there the water was pretty calm and clear and the current wasn't too fast. The last time though, the current was a lot faster and clarity was much worst.
This is going to be my part of my anniversary day with the girlfriend so I hope to "coincidentally" bump into you guys at the park. :
PM me for details.

x2
I wish I could go!
Just mounted the fishfinder today...it's scary drilling a 1in hole in your yak...
nice Simon! Got more balls than me, I'm too nervous about drillin into my beast.
I see you're using the folding chair technique ;D

Lol yep, thanks for that idea, works like a charm!
I have a Native Watercraft Ultimate 12. I love the boat. I have it rigged with Scotty rod holders aft, Humminbird Piranha 220 FF with a thru hull mount on the transducer and an anchor trolley with a 1.5 lb anchor and 1 ft of chain (going to go to 2 ft).
They sell the boat with an angler package that includes the rod holders, anchor kit and the anchor trolley but I added them myself over time.
The boat has mojo!
I have a LLBean Manatee you can see in my post image. Going to upgrade next year to a true fishing yak. I added two flush mount rod holders in the back, a scotty in front and today I just added an anchor trolley. I have a fish finder on order. I also installed a pulley system in my garage to hang my yak.
Paul, nice enhancer. Why do you use chain on your anchor and why is 2ft better than 1ft?
About Sunday, I am still working on the weekend schedule and will PM if I can meet up.
I'm in MD, but I fish the upper potomac now. anyway, here's my battleship. 13'10" 2-man ocean kayak ambush (pic with the middle seat removed)
QuoteHumminbird Piranha 220 FF with a thru hull mount on the transducer
Heya Paul, what method did you use for the through hull mount?
Rich, the chain helps the anchor dig better by putting weight ahead of it and keeping it in the right position.
Simon, I used marine goop to secure a piece of foam to the hull. The foam is cut out to hold the transducer and I used clear silicone to fix the transducer to the hull. If you use this method you need to be sure there are no bubbles in the silicone.

Ahh I see, I'm in the process of trying the PVC cup of water version...alot more trouble than I had imagined.
edit: i just poured a bit of water in it this morning....it failed miserably

is that a trolling motor on the yak!?

Yep. The yak was made with the battery compartment and a place to attach the motor, but i don't think ocean kayak makes these anymore...i would probably get another one
Alright, my apologies for taking so long to post these pictures..
This is my new Mad River Canoe from Dicks Sporting Goods.. (Great for family outing or with friends..)
Here is my Yak - Heritage Redfish 12.
Outfitted with a Eagle 242 FF, 3 Scotty Rod Holders, 2 Flush Mounted Rod Holders.. I TOTALLY Cannot take credit for the way this yak was put together..
My buddy Rob has the exact same yak, and i copied it from head to toe..
Absolutely no originality, but I love it anyways..

My friends Yak- w/ a nice flat head to boot.. hope he doesn't get mad i posted this.. hahaha
Nicely rigged kayak! Space is a premium on mine (only 9'-10') so I'm still trying to work out the best places to put stuff.
thanks, yeah.. if i had to figure out the logistics for everything on this yak, i'd go nuts.. 8-)
Thats why I just copied my friends yak to the T. hahahaha
Check this out.. my buddies flat head caught yesterday! this must have been a blast to catch.. man..
That's a huge cat. What's he using to catch the hunkers?
He hasn't gotten back to me yet, but when i find out i'll be sure to let u know.. He's invited me for a trip to his "spot".. I may have to schedule some time to visit him down in richmond for a blast..
Rich, I went back out yesterday.. and on the 2nd outting, I managed to land 2 smallies at that lake.. the senkos w/ the chartreuse tail worked!
Wow amazing cat, they got a bunch in Richmond that size but I've never targeted them and I dunno how to handle them... looks like it'd be a fuuuun fight though
Cool!
I have yet to catch any smallies.

Missed that part!! Call me out when you head down =D

I'll be heading to Burke Lake tomorrow between 1 and 2pm. If anyone is interested in meeting up that would be great!
Also, if anyone has any great "spots" and wouldn't mind sharing your secrets help me out.. or PM ME!!! ;D 8-)
Hey guys,
Just wondering if anyone wanted to head out to Fountainhead either Saturday or Sunday the 23 or 24th of august. Thinking of Kayaking out to a good spot to fish a variety of fish.. Have had some luck at other lakes, now trying to expand into new territories..
Yo!!! What's up Eddie! FYI that last catfish was a Blue cat (not flathead). And for the guy who wanted to know what I used, it was a live bluegill on a circle hook. And yes, it was hella fun. As far as kayak fishing goes, I'm up in Richmond, I have a Redfish 12 and love it. I love the area just below pony pasture area (James River)in Richmond, I go down to Virginia Beach pretty often and fish in Lynnhaven inlet, too. Let me know if you ever want to join me. Ed, we gotta catch up and fish the twin yaks.
Heya Robchoi, I'm down in Richmond too with a Hobie sport, lemme know if you head out to fish down here one day, I'm definitely up for it!
I'll be down at the Eastern shore (Kiptopeke) this weekend, but maybe next week we can try for some smallies in the James. I was thinking of taking a trip to Briery Creek some time, too. I'll let you know. I wonder how much this rain will affect the fishing.
yea...I was planning to launch down river of belle isle, I had some luck there a few weeks back...I hope the rain doesn't turn the fish off
ROBBBBB!!! WHATS UP DUDE!!! YEA MAN!!! FINALLY JOINED THE BEST FORUM ON THE NET.. you gotta show these guys the other cats you caught! I'm going out this Sat to Beaverdam again with a buddy of mine.. Hey what are you doing on Labor day? Hows the baby coming along?
Like I was telling Simon, I'm gonna be down at the Eastern shore (Kiptopeke), flounder fishing, maybe some speckled trout, etc. The baby's coming along great (Dr. says). She's been kicking alot. Good luck at Beaver dam. Is this the place on Occoquan river you were talking about?
I posted the pictures of the catfish on the "Other Fish Species" section.
I think the Beaver dam eddie is talking about is in Northern VA arouth the South Riding area. Awesome cats =D
Thanks Simon. We'll have to go catfishin' sometime. I'll try to give you a heads up when I go again.
