I'm planning a wade trip for smallmouth on this Saturday 9/26 in the afternoon/evening near Fredericksburg, VA. The water is still warm enough for swim trunks and old sneakers. Who's down? A word of caution - this wade is easy as far as the terrain (sandy bottom, minimal rocks, no really deep spots) but it does get tiring because of the distance.
In. Lock it up.
oh, and there will probably be a soggy trip to Gander Mountain involved, as per my tradition.
how far is it from richmond?
Dam, i wish i could make it. I went SM wade fishing a month ago in WV for the first time in my life and im hooked. You all have fun and be safe, o and catch one for me
Quotehow far is it from richmond?
about an hour.
You know I am in
gimmie a time and i will see what i can do
I was thinking something like 2pm-dark?
If anyone from up around me needs a ride, I have three seats. (David, you need a ride?) I'll be leaving a little before 1pm.
if yall were floating the james between bremo and columbus on the 3rd of october, you would see the flotilla of kayakers slaying the smallies. gotta love the floaters ;D

umm, yeah, ok!
I'm so down for this! If you still have a seat i could meet up with you at your place are something man, let me know

Potomac Angler, if you are in Mount Vernon I can pick you up on the way. Just PM me your address or the address of wherever you want to meet.
One seat left.
PS. it's best to just bring one rod. You'll regret it if you have to carry two rods the whole time.
I hear you man, made the mistake to bringing two rods and a full 30lb tackle bag one time...worst wade trip ever lol
And if you dont mind picking up it'd be great, I just didnt want you to have to go out of your way man I'll PM you

WHOO!! i'm cised. i think i'm gonna be stuck with plastics though, as my plastic at gander was DENIED last night. lol. again... WHOOO!!
i think i am going to be able to make it after i work in the morning. I have never been wade fishing so what should i bring and could you pm me the directions.
For everyone:
Rod/Reels:
Bring one rod. A medium to medium heavy action rod would be best. Whatever you like to fish your soft plastics on. I will be bringing a spinning rod but whatever you have and like will be fine.
Baits:
Bring a pocketful of finesse worms, flukes, tubes, and senkos. Bring some wacky rig hooks, some worm hooks, and some shakey head jigs, and regular jigs if you have them. If you have them, bring a couple of topwaters like poppers or walk the dog baits. I use a vest to carry my stuff so I will have plenty of extra goodies if you can't carry everything. An old backpack that you don't mind getting wet will work perfectly.
Clothes:
The water is still pretty warm so you will be fine with just an old pair of sneakers, swim trunks, and a t-shirt. You might want to bring a change of socks and shoes and clothes for the ride home. For the guys riding with me, try to bring an extra towel to dry off with or sit on. I'll bring some extras just in case.
I will also bring a waterproof camera and some pliers.

cmatthews what do you think about car pooling possibly? ill try and see how long i am going to be busy at work seeing as we are doing applicant testing in the morning in henrico.
d**n work on saturday that must suck. but yea carpooling would work i can drive and you can ride with me and hokie can to if he wants
A guy I used to work with a couple years ago is also fishing the Rapp that day.
He may join us, he may stay at his spot. Will let you know, Dan.
alright ill pm closer to saturday in case i cant carpool but i work at parham and shrader in the west end. fyi
We won't be on the Rapp. BTW, guys, please don't post about this spot. You can share it with other members via PM but if you post it in threads other random people can find it through Google without even registering here.
BTW, my college roommate is coming up from Ashland to fish with us.

Whats the ave sized smallie here and water depth, I want to choose my gear accordingly since I cant bring it all lol!
Also what other fish are here?
I second what potomac angler says
hey chris man what time you wanting you looking at leaving at?
The average size fish question is tough to answer. There aren't a TON of little fish like you would catch in the Rapp closer to River Rd. but the fish are bigger on average. The fish in the pics I posted at the beginning of the thread are my biggest from this area. They range from 16-19". I have seen but been unable to catch a few 2.5-3lb fish and one that I think would have gone 4lbs.
The water depth ranges from ankle deep to up to your chest at the deepest. On my trips, I can wade the whole trip without going deeper than my belly button. The deep spots are easy to wade around in shallower water.
There are smallmouth, the occasional largemouth, green sunfish, bluegill, some sort of shad/chub that I can't identify but show up in schools by the dozen, catfish, some GIANT carp, and I even caught a small striper once but I wouldn't count on it happening again.
I have only been down there a few times this year and haven't done particularly well (although one of three times I was fly fishing for the first time) but I have seen the fish and I know they are there.
If it's a tough day then we can head down the road to River Rd. to try our luck there.
Is there enough room here to fly fish? With all these people?
i will be attending this wade but will only be able to wade for a couple hours. camping out in staunton that night. anyone know how far of a drive it is to staunton?
Quotei will be attending this wade but will only be able to wade for a couple hours. camping out in staunton that night. anyone know how far of a drive it is to staunton?
two hours or so. If you go west towards Culpeper and then south on Rt. 29/Rt.15 to I-64 it will be quicker than going from Fredericksburg back to Richmond and then west on 64 from there.
QuoteIs there enough room here to fly fish? With all these people?
probably. There are enough spots to fish along the way that we should be able to separate and have plenty of rooms. Are you planning on fly-fishing?
well i shall definately be coming to learn a thing or two about smallmouth fishing. aint done much good for them outside of the 12in range.

I have an old fly rod, but it hasnt seen any water since i've had it. i might, but i will definatley be bringing my BC setup as well. i've never fly fished, so i'm sure its going to be an abomination if i try it out.
Accuweather is forecasting rain for Fredericksburg on Saturday afternoon. Hopefully it will be wrong like it has been for the rain that was supposed to happen this week.
Nice Smallies I love catching them, the last year I went fishing 07 I caught a 3 pound small mouth in nottoway river near some rapids that was fun my reel actually broke off and I ended up jumping in after him when he got close to the bank lol. They put up a better fight then any other bass I've seen even better since this one was in the rapids.
BassShepard, thats a nice looking dog.
Got some rain down here last night, dont know how much but it didnt seem like too much. Hopefully it was the rain that was supposed to hit tomorrow.
The gauges still look good.
In case there is rain, how does Sunday at the same time look for everybody? As long as the gauge height doesn't increase too much we can still go on Sunday if it rains on Saturday.
The forecast for tomorrow is very nasty guys. It is supposed to rain from 2pm until Sunday morning and it is supposed to be cold. 66 degree air temp is fine when you are dry but very cold when you are wet.
I hate to say it but I think we need to postpone the trip. The cool weather today along with the long nature of the forecasted rain storm has me thinking that it is going to be too cold to fish. This is not an area where we want to be when it is raining heavily. It is just dangerous.
How does next Saturday look for everyone?
Unfortunately I will not be able to make it next three Saturdays actually - However I wish you all the best of luck!
We will just have to plan a "kill the unemployment boredom" trip sometime soon Dan 8-)
Next saturday is no good for me. and this sunday is no good for me. Is this the final decsion? No good for tomorrow?
Yeah, it's just going to be too cold. The forecast says 66 degrees and rain the whole afternoon/evening. The river has steep banks and I don't want to be in it when it is raining. It would be very easy to get swept down through Fredericksburg by a flash flood.
I'm sorry dudes but it's just not going to be any fun at all with that kind of weather and potentially dangerous.
NewAngler, do you ever have any weekdays off?
David, we'll schedule something during the week sometime soon. Maybe Potomac Angler can join us if he's free?
Sounds good! Just so you know ill be gone oct 3-10th on a cruise sooo no fishing for me... unless I go out fishing in the gulf *High possibility of this 250 bucks for 6 1/2 hours of gulf fishing I am extremely tempted. *Problem is with my drinking tenancies I am worried enough about my bar bill after this :/
But if you want to try to go out next week certainly let me know!
Unfortunatley its budget time for my company. And I wil be working practically non stop until about mid to late october.
I never have a DAY off, however I can "schedule" meetings that just so happen to be the same times you guys are fishing. Let me know. I'm going to hit a pond in the morning in Bealeton, will post some hawgs (hopefully)
If the weather in Fredericksburg looks anything like it does up here, it looks like we made the right call.
The weather was so nasty, you all made the right choice. I would really like to make one of these trips soon.
Yeah, it was far too cold and the USGS water flow and height gauges spiked pretty high. I'd really like to get a trip in but it's going to be very difficult with everyone's schedule and the fact that there isn't much warm weather left. The water will be too cold to wade soon.
