Which people taught you to fish 2024

I learned most of my fishing from my grandfather who was born in California. I learned alot from fishing in New yorks clear waters. Fishing for old Northernstrain largemouth prepare you for any condition. Fishing in the midwest,or deep south is very easy, you can catch a 5 lb without even trying, or with little skill. Well not little skill but its way more competitive in Northeast and westcoast. Which forces you to become better angler.

My father, grandfather, and two uncles taught me to fish. I was always with at least one of them. 8-)

My Dad with the basics.
Virgil Ward and Bill Dance probably taught me the most along with assorted anglers I fished with when I joined a club at 18.

My dad introduced me to hunting and fishing, for which I am eternally grateful.
In any case, it would be a stretch to say that dad taught me how to fish (on the contrary).
Though I'm basically self-taught, the one man who taught me the most was Al Lindner
(penpal and founder of In-Fisherman).

#1: Working on my uncle's charter fishing boat in the Gulf of Mexico and learned how to locate/read deep water structure.
#2: Joined two bass clubs whose members included John Torian, John Hall, John Dean, Lonnie Stanley, Villis P "Bo" Dowden SR, Harold Allen, Larry Nixon, Tommy Martin, & Zell Roland.
#3: Attended a 5-day seminar in Houston Texas that totally changed my outlook on bass fishing. The man putting on that seminar was Elwood L. " Buck" Perry, not only did I buy his books but I became a devout student of his teachings. I took what Buck taught about deep structure fishing and applied it to Toledo Bend.
#4: A devout student of Bill Murphy: Finding & understanding deep structure, Douglas Hannon & Shaw Grisby: Understanding bass behavior, Rick Clunn: Mental aspects of bass fishing, & Bobby Murray: Big bass can be caught on light line

Taught myself through camp one day at 8 yrs old(Fishing on and off for years).I wasn't as serious till i moved up here.I've gotten real serious the last 3 years.I wish i gotten serious alot younger...i regret it now,but i got a 2 1/2 year old partner now...he's gonna be raised fishing if he wants to be...lol.
My mom tells me the only other person who fishes in my family chain is my grandfather.She told me storys of his catches and how he rather spend the day at a lake than anything else.I really wish i gotten the chance to meet him alive.He died when my mom was 13.

I learned the most basic information about fishing from Jack Dolson, our next door neighbor. It wasn't until Jerry McKinnis started a show called the Falls City Fisherman that I really learned to bass fish. That was in the late 60s.

My dad taught me how to trout fish shortly after birth. I was the only flyfisherman I knew of in the north Georgia Mountains for years. Then when I was about 17 I met my best friend Adam (aka Doghouse on this site) He got me started bass fishing and it's been an addiction ever sence.

I learned most of my fishing from Micky, my co-worker at the time he was the first on to put a BC in my hands with a Loomis rod. He instructed me how to feel the bottom as I reeled it in what to throw out and when and not to keep changes lures every five minutes. Later that day he gave that rod and fishing has been a passion since.

My whole family is known for fishing in my area. We are the ones who spend our lives fishing. We have gotten tons of kids fishing in our area we take them for trout I take people bass fishing. We show them our "secret" spots. I have learned the majority of things from my family on fishing in general. For bass fishing I have learned from my dad, uncle, a local pro that took me under his wing, and all of you at bass resource!

My Dad worked a lot, we did go fsihing , off the rocks in the Rockaways in Queens NY a couple of times.Most of our free time was spent on baseball.
He took us upstate fro a few summers and I first learned how to fish bass from a guy who was our neighbor and owned a boat livery place on the NY side of Greenwood Lake
Most of what I learned is from Al Linder and Bill Dance. I have to confess I don't get that deep and am probablly more casual in my attitude than most on these forums
Since I have been a member here, I have learned the most from LBH, Zel and Avid.
Long Mike,RW,Risk Kid and Alpster have all been a huge help also

My dad started me out fishing when I was about 3. He took me surf fishing at the OBX and helped me reel in a 5# flounder. After that he would take me to my aunts pond with a cork n worms. My best friend had a pond on his parents property and we did odd jobs around the houses to get some money for a small jon boat and oars. We caught a lot of crappy and bream and couple of bass accidently hit our hooks from time to time. When we got old enough to drive we spent the summers on the pier fishing for king macks down on the coast. When I joined the Marine Corps it was over for me because I was 10 min from the intercoastal waterway and became an avid flounder and sea trout fisherman. Got in good with a lot of the old timer locals and they showed me how to truly fish for them. This past spring I got what I call burnt out on saltwater and decided to go for bass. Most everything I have learned has come from this site. I don't often have a lot of luck, but its my goal this year to become a somewhat decent bass fisherman. Hopefully it will come easier with time spent out there.

I have to say my friends Troy, Stephanie and Karen taught me the most (outside of the forum). They all taught me the basics of choosing rods and reels for certain fishing applications and how to set up certain basic rigs.
Aside from that my father and I have traded quite a bit of knowledge back and forth and have helped each other become better over the past year. On here I have learned quite a bit from watching some of LBH's videos, talking and listening to some of the vets of the forum (in the Va area) such as Sam, Basspro48, Btlva, etc. These guys know this state, the water ways, how to fish em', and if your nice enough provide some generous tips and info they use regularly. I really appreciate all these guys do for us Northern Virginia anglers.
It's nice to come some where were we can talk and share info instead of trying to talk to guys outside of here who a lot of the time are stuck up and/or do not want to give up any info on the waterway or "how to find the fish". Alot of the boaters on the lakes around here are like that. The boaters on the Occoquan are normally pretty cool though (the river).

My grandmother taught me how to fish. She didn't know all that much herself, but she would take my brother and me out in her boat and we'd all do our best. She realized we loved it, so she bought us guided trips, took us on camping trips, houseboat trips, and even got us lessons (e.g. fly fishing lessons, fly tying lessons). For that I'll always be grateful. She is the one who sparked my love not just for fishing, but for the outdoors. Fortunatley, she's still alive and kickin', and for a grandmother, she's very young. I plan on visiting her in GA this winter to get in some "swamp fishing" and redfish fishing.

I first learned to fish with my dad as a kid. We'd fish the rock jetty in Moss Landing, CA every chance we had. I learned more bass technique from my good friend Long, he taught me 80% of what I know today.

I got my fishing mainly from myself. When were young my mom, dad, and brother would go out to the lake and maybe do very little fishing maybe worms on the snoopy pole back in party cove, but mainly swim and water skiing. That's how I got the love of the water and fishing gave me a excuse to be on the water and grown to love it. My grandfathers (both) died when I was very young or before I was born. I wish there was some who could have gave me some pointers on fishing, but I guess Bass Resource is my grandfather now.

Grandma taught me how to fish as a small child then my Grandfather and Dad taught me later on and taught me quail and dove hunting as well. Never did any deer hunting. I was never a very good shot so the only way I could down a quail is if I scared him to death. ;D Funny thing my eye sight dramatically improved over the years to the point that the eyeglass restriction was removed from my drivers license.
Now Im kind of curious how my shooting ability has improved or unimproved. Back to the subject,, Dad was responsible for teaching me lures and plastics, and trolling in the boat. He called it fatboy fishin.

My Grandfather introduced me to fishing when I was 4 or 5, we mostly surf fished on Masonboro Island and fished a little in the sound behind the island. I quit fishing around the time I was 15 or 16 and got back into fishing around my mid 20's mainly King Mackeral and offshore. I got burnt out on the saltwater scene and have been freshwater fishing the last 2 summers. I have learned most of what I know from trial and error and from Bass Resource.com. My goal for next year is become a better angler period, in both the fresh and saltwater, however I will focus more time on Bass fishing, than saltwater

Well, my dad brought me for the first time but I learned to fish in saltwater for the most part. I had a few people showing me the ropes. Capt. Kevin Dailey, Capt. Bill Mancini, Bob Mancini, the Dolph brothers and a few others.
Much of it transfers but freshwater has been a self learning thing. Dirk was always ahead of me (knowledge wise) so I'm sure I picked up quite a bit from him too. Fly fishing, I was taught exclusively by Bob and Bill Mancini.

I thank my grandpa for taking me out fishing early in my life and introducing me to such a great sport. He was the one who gave me the bug and taught me the basics of fishing. I have also learned alot from watching Bill Dance and I try to learn something from every person I go fishing with.

Taught me how to fish when I was just a toddler. On the banks of the Cattaraugus Creek in Versailles.
Grew up there in the summers at my Grandfathers house which is on the banks. Parents worked weekdays and I spent all day with him and my grandma. Never forget my grandma hooking into a nice steelhead. She got it within a foot from shore and it came off......my grandma actually bellyflopped into the water from shore to try and jump on it. She missed. ;D Best fishing memory ever as a child.

as far as bass fishing my uncle got me started after i took intrest in it,my dad i guess first got me into fishing in general by taking me to a small pond owned by my grandfather to catch bluegill when i was really little. we also go surf fishin too

my dad and my grandpa. I'm lucky in that my grandpa was the late and great comby of comby rod and reel repair. He could do anything, he tied his own jigs and spinners to even working with Bass Pro Shop when they were still a small company. ;D
