On my way home from work today,I noticed dead fish in the creek.
Their were... Bass,Catfish,Trout,Blugill,Gar & Carp all over.
Seen some hugh fish, all belly up.
Found out from my wife, that the city hade a Chlorine leak > Now Med.Creek is all dead of fish > > >.
Who know's when fish will thrive & swim again in the creek,I loved to fish so much.
Looks like, I got to fish the wildlife refuge for Trophy Bass :.
H.B.A.
Oh man that really really sucks. All those dead fish that you could of caught :'( Is action taking place to fix the problem?
At the very least, be glad that you had a trophy bass creek, and I would be going after the city. Chlorine is extremely dangerous and is classified as a hazardous material, there should have been no way that the city let it get released like that.
So far nothing from the 'City of Lawton' has been done to my knowledge.
A toxic creek now...Might find out tomarrow more about what the city will do or not do :.
Just make's me >.
That creek has had a lot of 10 pound bass swimming around in it.
I have been fortunate anuff to catch 6 Bass from 10 lb - 14.2 lb from that creek.
H.B.A.
Thefishing1~ welcome to po dunk town usa.
Thing's around here that can be gotton away with..I tell ya :
Just watch'ed the 10 '0 clock news...
The water tank is no longer drain'n into the creek.
Still all the fish are dead & they apect all the shellfish to die too.
They..The City of Lawton will meet tomarrow to disuss the issue with the City of Medicine Park.
I sure hope they re-stock the creek & get it back to normal again very soon.
Well I hope that you get your creek back, even though I know that it will take a few years. For what it helps the pond in my avatar was poisoned 2 years ago, but it has been restocked and although they are not too big now they are all alive and healthy.
I wish you and your creek the best.
Take some pictures for evidence when or if it goes to court. I have seen things like this get swept under the rug.
You can have chlorine in the water and it not be harmful unless you drink it, but it will kill anything in the water. Think swimming pools, you put chlorine tablets in it to kill bacteria.
Redtop~ What?
I live about 100 yard's from the water treatment plant here in Medicine Park!
Noone is dead from the leaking water tank :.
Nothing is closed off / or no access to the creek either.
No hazmat team is on location here.
H.B.A.
Thefishing1~ Thank's.
H.B.A.
Cool down guys.
Perhaps it's a petroleum spill, not chlorine?

Show us the pictures of the creek and dead fish
QuoteShow us the pictures of the creek and dead fish
Yes, please do, because this
QuoteYou are talking about a major fish kill that happend over night. Right?
I work on a hazmat team here in Texas, not to far from the Oklahoma border. I have been training hazmat personnel for more than 20 years. If there is a chlorine leak that is large enough to kill large fish in the numbers you are describing and kill them in a short time then it is a major leak and requires immediate evacuation of the surrounding area until it can be determined that it is safe enough for people to return. I called my office to check if there were any known leaks in the South Eastern Oklahoma area and they couldn't locate any. They would have gotten a report on them from anywhere in the US even if they were small. So buddy, I'm calling your bluff again.
Is dead on. I am also a trained responder and will back up the fact that a chlorine leak that is big enough to kill full grown, large fish, would indeed require an evacuation. Also, the EPA and WEF are notified of every chlorine spill, regardless of size, if it is released to the environment. Nothing reported from your city/town on either site.
But you took pics so posting them will easily prove us naysayers wrong.
Hazmat guys. Are chlorine gas and dissolved chlorine treated the same. I believe the leak in this thread was dissolved chlorine similar to a swimming pool. No body is evacuating swimming pools, but the chlorine in a swimming pool will kill big fish. The chlorine in our tap water will kill big fish if you put them in a tank of tap water.
I agree it should be reported and handled as a bad situation, but maybe not warrant evacuations when it's no more hazardous than a swimming pool.
Disclaimer. I have no knowledge of the actual leak and am only going off info from this thread.
I have been pretty good lately. Havent said anything to offend anyone and this isnt meant to either.
You may want to check your boots....
I am no scientist or trained in emergency chemical clean up, but if something like that happens that quickly, I would want some answers from a professional regarding my ground water. BTW, check the filter in your Brita.
I will gladly retract my statement if valid pictures are provided and that shouldnt be a problem since you have clearly stated that they do exist.
Good day.
Glenn,
I'm surprised at the dectectives on this site that didn't ask what an oil spill from somewhere else has to do with Oklahoma and this?
I know for a fact, that some of the same guys on here have pulled the wool over a few of your eyes in the past and ongoing to this day. Do I loose any sleep over there pretending to be something they aren't?
I almost posted some pictures of big green treees and Chris' plants on the patio yesterday. 77 degrees yesterday.
Also, if you look at the last ten years of my pictures from summer months and even some cooler days, you will see the same shirts and hats in my pictures. Some great eveidence.
By the way, you can probably tell its winter just because of the hats and same shirt in those pictures also.
So, for the dectectives who think all trees loose there leaves in winter, or there is no such a thing as green grass in winter. Big deal!!!!!!
I'm sure there are some guys that can tell you they have seen snow melt and winter rye grasses are green as can be after snow melts off, grass as green as it is in the summer.
And Chris takes the plants out on good days to water and let them drain.
I have seen so many bass that looks the same, i'm not gonna try to play CSI by sight of pictures only. Good Grief!!!!
If he lied, its between him and his maker, not you or me. I don't disagree with all of it either.
I looked at my pictures last night. Based on plants, grass, clothes, same dead trees on Fork, and such, i'm glad I haven't ever posted or bragged. You guys are brutal.
Integrity, its a funny thing in Cyber space. Alot of us have met, most of us haven't. Integrity allows us to take a handle, a name we have never used before, live anywhere we want, be anyone we want to, and we are supposed to believe it all. I take every thing with grain of salt, believe what sounds believable to me, and thats all that matters.
Whether HBA did or didn't does not reflect upon me at all.
My name is Matt Fly, and thats real, nothing to hide behind. So when you speak of integrity, look whos took a different idenity to begin with!!!! How honest is that. White lie or not, its a lie, true? Do I mind the handles? NO.
And ya'll get upset about someone not being honest.
Based on pictures, trees and grass and same clothes, thats nothing at all, not after reviewing my pictures and being observant at looking at trees the past few days.
Then based on expert photo ID. Thats brutal!!!!!!
Ya'll have a nice day!!!!!! jsut my 2 cents.
HBA - please provide a link to the news story covering this spill (or chemical leak). I would like to learn more about it, but am having difficulty finding the info.
Thanks!
Earlier, there was some one claiming BS due to other story. Then they removed it or some one cleaned it up. Talk about some snakes in the grass that won't even leave an accusation posted. Ya'll know who you are.
Then we have all these experts that have worked hazmat for lots of years. That know exactly what happens.
Looks like ya'll might need some more training.
Any way, ya'll know who you are that basically called him a liar and removed your post.
Heres the story right off of Google, chlrorine and Medicine park, some detectives. LOL

P.S. you can watch the news footage also of said creek.

Good day.
Just read the link provided by Matt Fly. As stated above, I will retract my BS claim.
Thanks Matt
Please note: Fellas, you can admit you are wrong and not delete your posts.
I don't claim to belong to the morality police but the accusations of dishonesty did seem a bit harsh. Especially since the facts (external validation from a news source-in this case) weren't yet in.
Wow,that sucks.I stayed out of this thread once it turned ugly.I'm glad matt fly put the "pwned" in this thread.
I truly hope they clean it up and restock it.
Ok,
As of right now. It is in SouthWestern Oklahoma... not SE OK,I never said SE OK.
The Little town of Medicine Park.
The City Of Lawton wich has the water treatment plant, maybe 100 yard's from my house.
They have had a leak of chlorine from 1 of their tanks since sometime last week.
The fish are dead & they acpect all the shellfish to die as well.
Only in certain part's of the creek :.
Since this morning 2-3 New's crews have showed up & filmed this Creek.
Two of wich,I know are channel 7 & channel 3.
Last nite on the 10 O' clock news on channel 7..they were report'n on it.
They had video of dead fish & the Maior of the town of Medicine Park in a interview.
I seen the inmate's... scope'n up the dead fish from the creek this morning. Mostly Rainbow Trout.
Last,I hade heared they say the water in the creek where i catch my bass is ok.They said they took water samples of it for chlorine.
This is all,I know as of now. H.B.A.
Hey I'm sorry to hear about that. That really blows. If the town where I fish polluted the ponds and killed all the fish, I would go Ape Sh!t.
Its awful how a whole ecosystem was destroyed because some dumb@$$ F'D up >
Matt Fly~ Thank You_ for your help to a link for the other members to view.
H.B.A.
People just like to jump the gun without having all the facts to make themselves smarter than others. See it all the time at work, lol.
HBA great job in keeping your cool in all this, I know I wouldn't be able to. 8-)
Matt Fly-Wow, thats all I can say, lmao ;D
So what do they do now? Sure it may have been mostly trout but if the stuff is killing everything right down to the shell fish upstream, that's got to effect the fish downstream. I'm curious to see (God willing your big fish survive) if they will have 10lbe heads and 5 lbr bodies.
Do states have restocking plans for accidents like these?
Good for you Matt Fly. HBA, I agree, you really kept your cool. Good job.
Tom
Come on guys, what's with all the drama? Sheesh....
Tin, Everybody has their opion & reply..That is their god givin right.I don't take reply's & opion's to the grain of assult.
We are all people here..some like ya / some don't, that is just life.
Keeping my cool is not hard to do.
I do appreciate some of you who waited to reply...Thank You.
Anyway's ..'I Know Some Of You want a Pic'..................
So..These are the only 2... I got for ya'all. H.B.A.
That really sucks on a bunch of different levels > :'(. I feel for you my friend. I had a small lake that I was just learning about and the owner stopped all fishing. He got scared of lawyers.
"kill all the lawyers"

ok, I have an idea.
Are you familiar with your local club scene? no, not the disco, the bass clubs, lol. It's not necessary but would help.
If you contact your local president, you can ask to be put on their agenda to speak at an open meeting to request volunteers.
I suggest you ask the town for permission to rally some anglers to restock it yourselves from other area resources. Everybody fill the live well with certain recommended species, give them a good bath in Aquarisol and let em rip.

This may put a couple guys on your bass hole. If that would be the case, maybe you could contact Trout unlimited, but either way, you can show how the citizens can get it done.
Just a suggestion.
Skillet~ Thank's Bro.
It sucks to see such a good Creek, Go to chit in a hand bag.
Lawyers~ I totally agree with ya on that 1...Skillet
H.B.A.
L_B_H... Thanks for insite. I appreciate it.
A little info for ya...The Town of Medicine Park, buy's Rainbow Trout.
I believe from Missouri. They spend alot to get them here & stocked.
Medicine Park is only ask'n 'The City of Lawton' to re-stock the creek
with Trout.
So, with what ya suggested...Would it make a difference?
H.B.A.

Depends if they go for it or not I suppose.
But even if they pay to replenish the trout (finally got my video to work), there are lots of other gaps that are going to be missing from the food chain.
From freshwater clams and Catfish to biozymes and Bluegill. These are the things I'm talking about replacing, not just the bass and trout
That really sucks.
Well,
It seems that all the 'Town of Medicine Park' is conserned about is...
The Rainbow Trout & nothing else >..Some Town i got to live in :.
I did find out, they had the same so called accident back in 2003.
H.B.A.
QuoteI did find out, they had the same so called accident back in 2003.
Hopefully the accident that your creek is now dealing with
is no worse than the one that took place in 2003.
I say that because, judging from the size of the bass you caught,
they almost certainly were over 5 years old, which is a good ***.
In the meantime H.B.A., let's hope for the best.
Roger
RoLo,
I'm always glad when you decide to put your 2 cents in . I hadn't even thought of the situation in that light :-[...
As Ever,

RoLo~ The bass in the creek come from the Lake above it...
Lake Lawtonka.
They can either get through the bottom somewhere /or they come over the spillway.
This last summer we had major flooding around these parts & the gates at the spillway were raised up pass 72" for day's on in.
Needless to say a but load of water & fish came over the dam.
A lot of fish died from the wild ride through the creek & some survived.
I didn't start fishing the creek till about 3 year's ago.
I hade no idea the same so called accident had happened before.
So,on that fact...I hope the fish make it, like they have in the past.
A lot fish have died already & where i go for bass in the creek has dead fish lying on the bottom. :-? So, I'm confussed about what has been said about the fish down stream...They say they will make it.
Then why are there Blugill & LMBass lying dead on the bottom ???
I hope for the best for the this creek...It sure has been through Hell in the last year.
H.B.A.
just came up on this thread and all i got is wow. best of luck witth the creek and the fish hopfully your spot didnt get hit as bad or at all
HBA,
Maybe they are talking about it getting more diluted the farther downstream as it mixes with more clean water :-/...
As Ever,
skillet
Those may have been drifters from upstream that finally sank further downstream in your hole.
Sorrry man hope you find another great spot
It was actually clorinated water (drinking water) that was leaked into the creek. I haven't heard how many fish were affected, however treated water dissipates quickly in running water and the damage should have been minimal. I just hope the city of Lawton finds and fixes the problem. By the way, glad to see local on this board.
flipin4bass~ maybe that is why,in back of 2003 the fish survived it down stream.
I believe the guys are right, about the fish just driffing down stream & are located at where i fish.
Most of the dead fish are all in 1 spot { Bath Lake }.
Nice to see a local guy on here too.
H.B.A.
i've lost favorite fishing areas completely lately, and it truly sucks.
Triton9~ I fell for ya bro...
It's a shame not to be able to fish your Honey Hole's /or anywhere close to home.
H.B.A.
HBA, just saw the thread and can't believe what has happened to your fishing hole. It just stinks. I'm not sure if the board members understand that the water treatment plant belongs to the 100k + population city down the road and not the little few thousand population community it's facility has affected. As a former resident of Lawton I can vouch for the corruption of it's leaders. I'm sure they will find a way to snake out of responsibility for this at MP's expense. It's time to get lawyers involved if you ask me. big
hey HBA just thought id add that i have some family out your way somewere around Lawton and Anadarko
bighead~ You are so right about the City of Lawton.
True snake's in the grass.
Medicine Park is not that much better either.
H.B.A.
RedskinRiot27~
Maybe...Meers, Elgin,Cyril,Cement or Apache.
any of though's ring a bell?

This thread has dwindled down just 2 or 3 people now. It's time to use the PM function guys.
