Most irritating fishing condition? 2024

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

For the last 3 weeks it has been extremely (20-30 mph) windy which drives me absolutely nuts. You can't position your boat correctly, you can't cast the way you want, you can't feel your bait the way you want, and you back lash more. I have been catching every time out but when I get home I'm more irritated than if I hadn't gone!

That's my rant for the month thank you

fishing user avatarWesley reply :

I hear you man, the wind the last few weeks has sucked majorly.  I am ready for some calm no wind days.

fishing user avatarMatt Fly reply :

When the wind comes up in the back of a creek or pocket that is full of stumps below the water line.

Easiest way to pop a hole in the boat.    That stresses me ou crawling out with the nose coming down hard.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

The ULTIMATE BAD:

High wind with freezing temperatures and rain, fishing in chocolate milk.

Been there once, but it won't happen again.

>:(

fishing user avatarPopeye reply :

Yep, I don't care much for Mariah when I'm out fishing either. I can handle the cold and rain, but can't do much to offset windy conditions.

fishing user avatarmoloch16 reply :

I don't cuss often, but if I'm fishing on a windy day I cuss like a sailor.

Yes, days like that just me off!

fishing user avatarTokyo Tony reply :

Another very frustrating situation is shorefishing on a hot windless day with tons of mosquitos. That's almost always enough to make me leave.

fishing user avatarflechero reply :

I hear ya, Catt... but it's been longer than 3 weeks around here!  Tuesday afternoon we had about an 8 hour window with winds under 15...  I had a stomach ache and left work at 1pm.   ;)

Check that, we also had a nice Sunday (2 weeks ago) but I had to be in Dallas on family business.   :-/

I don't even mind high wind so much if it's not a sustained wind...  nothing worse than a trolling motor on high and the boat is drifting backwards.

fishing user avatarfishizzle reply :

Right now we have gnats like crazy.

hundreds of them that foolow the boat

fly in your ears eyes and mouth, yuck

ps.  wind and mosquitos annoys me too

fishing user avatarfishfordollars reply :

Since I started back after my health problems I do not think the wind has been under 30mph on any trip. It sucks!

fishing user avatarHawg Fan reply :

Definately Gnats and Mosquitoes

I'd rather have gnats and mosquitoes than a gusty wind. You can always put on bug spray.

fishing user avatarFR0G reply :

Wind. I hate it with a passion. And its been non stop windy for the past 2 weeks.

fishing user avatarBassin_Fin@tic reply :

High wind without a doubt.

I'm in a 14 ft aluminum with a 50lb thrust trolling motor. Can you say spinning in circles??!!!

Then the fish decide to get buried 10 miles deep in cover so flipping is the way to go.Yeah right, the way to go into a sanitarium in about an hour >:(

fishing user avatardonbeatya reply :

okay i only fish this 40 or so acre pond here in el paso, tx and the wind here(i.e. desert) sucks so bad since i float tube it i cant really handle anything over 15 mph. THE WIND BY FAR IS THE WORST CONDITION TO FISH IN PERIOD!!!!!!!!

fishing user avatarMaxximus Redneckus reply :

I hate cold fronts

fishing user avatarJoel W reply :

1st let me say that I fish the NYC reservoirs. We're only allowed to fish from 12-16ft rowboats, oars only. No trolling motors. So I row great distances.

The wind is my biggest pain in the butt.  Boat control/positioning can be anything from a pain to just plain impossible. Even getting from one spot to another may be out of the question. Even getting back to your assigned boat section may be out of the question if you don't keep one eye out on the weather at all times.

fishing user avatarGStrider reply :

Worst fishing conditions: 1) Not fishing 2) Reading about you guys who can at least fish now and complain about it.

fishing user avatarA-Jay reply :

Yes - I am not a fan of a big blow - I do all my fishing from a canoe - and I HATE It when I'm getting blown all over the lake !

It's been like that here seems like every time out - I'm ready for DEAD CALM !

I hate when it's real windy for those exact reasons.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

I grew up in marshes along the Southwest Louisiana coast so mosquitoes aint no problem

On Toledo Bend there are millions of tiny grey bugs we call gnats while they don't bite they will crawl in & out of your pocket.

This has been 20-30 mph sustained winds not gusts; the gusts will have you straining to stand up right.

fishing user avatarBrian_Reeves reply :

I'm with you Catt.  I HATE wind.  It does nothing good for me.  It blows over my bbq grill, screws up the lake, makes fishing out of my canoe impossible (which is my favorite fishing platform), messes up my gas mileage, and makes fishing light jigs (my specialty) completely useless.  I hate the wind with a passion.  Unless you have a sailboat, the wind sucks.

fishing user avatarPond Hopper reply :

Post cold front muddy water... seems I have been dealing with it for 3 weeks. I can deal with wind, a nice little chop seems to make the fish bite.

fishing user avatarJimzee reply :

Well I would have normally said wind until I went to Guntersville on a "real" lake and found out what wind really was. (30-40 mph) I have never drained a trolling motor battery on any lake in WV....Guntersville eat it alive. I will never complain about the wind in WV again. ;D

fishing user avatarburleytog reply :

Wind, wind, and more wind.

fishing user avatarfourbizz reply :

I'm a fan of wind up until about 15-20, after that I am with you guys. If boat positioning and casting weren't an issue then I would be happy. Wind+Swimbaits= ;D

But post frontal conditions in cold, muddy water. I will probably just stay home and head butt a wall. Gets me angry and gives me a headache just like the fishing would have, but I saved $100.

fishing user avatarLavrax reply :

fishing in midsummer under the sun with temperatures in the order of 106 degrees, with a hot burning wind as if was from an exhaust  pipe blowin in your eyes and drying them.. Also having wasps, bees following you, spiders and thirsty vipers crawling everywhere :s.. Waiting for the sun to descent only to realize that a massive mosquito cloud is forming over your head, which is time to head home !

fishing user avatarfarmpond1 reply :

The three most irrittating fishing conditions (from a boat) are wind, wind, and wind.  Sometimes I wish I had a heavier fiberglass boat to help counter the wind but with gas prices being what they are...

I thought I'd be clever this year and get an anchor mate so I could drop and raise anchor on a whim (without getting rope burns or constantly untangling kinks.  It works as advertised and I'm fairly pleased with the product (though there could be a few improvements).  Many (read "most") of the lakes I fish, however, have hard clay bottoms and if the wind is stronger than about 10 mph, the anchor just skitters along the bottom until I drift into deeper water.  Then it just suspends under the boat.

Did I happen to mention that I hate the wind?

fishing user avatarrondef reply :

I hear you on the wind conditions.  It is not fun to fish in the high winds.

Sounds like the WI opener tomorrow, only the temps should be in the low to mid 40's with a 20mph wind, and a 60% chance of rain, and thunder thrown in the mix, great....

fishing user avatarNick B reply :

Being here in New Mexico, wind is by far the worst part. It definetly determines what days I will fish here. Breezy here I can handle, windy is dangerous here, 30-40 sustained gusts to 60. Of course Murphy's law always comes into play on windy days, My outboard will decide its time to go to crap on windy days. Im sure when I move to Little Rock in June I will find a new condition that is the most irritating. When I was stationed in Ga, I would say the heat and bugs were the most irritating the wind wasnt really that big of a problem

Yeah and those little bugs called no-no's or simms.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

Hail isn't any fun either :(.

fishing user avatarthetr20one reply :

I can take the wind. I really don't mind it unless it has heavy rain with it. I have been on Lake Erie in some pretty rough stuff, (20to30mph) that gets a little hairy. But on our smaller lakes I just deal with it. I hate fishing in very calm scorching hot bluebird sky days.

Okay, you've got me there.  That is pretty dang irritating.  That and jet/water skiers.  I'm surprised nobody has mentioned them.

fishing user avatarrboat reply :

Wind, jet skis, waterskiers, powerboats, crowded ramps, idiots,

and having to take a leak and suddenly every boat on the lake stops in viewing distance.

fishing user avatarwilsonm1 reply :

hi, im in middle schoool, my most irritating fishing condition is having my family around, both of my sisters can be so annoying.

fishing user avatarFishinDaddy reply :

Air Boats - They are everywhere, Sunday I was drifting down a canal about a half cast off the bank and had an Airboat go between me and the bank.  I wish I had a big crank bait on the deck at that time.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Roadwarrior...no alcohol beverages allowed on my boat for any reason.

No alcohol beverages allowed on any boats during a tournament.

Smokeing is OK but if we get very technical, I can DQ anyone smoking if they throw their cigeratte buts into the water as pollution is grounds for a DQ.

And no wild women allowed in the boats, either!

fishing user avatarVekol reply :

Wind. And I always know it is going to windy on any given day when I'm in a boat and have a fishing rod in my hand. When I'm at work it seems the wind is generally about 5-10.

fishing user avatart bend tex reply :

I agree -  the wind on TBend has been BAD this year.  My wife and I have spent about 25 days during March and April at our fish camp on TB, probably had maybe 25 HOURS of decent wind conditions.  All our favorite bass (and crappie) spots seem to be directly in the path of the wind-of-the-day!

fishing user avatarRed reply :

i cant stand the wind either.  although it usually makes for better fishing, it makes casting difficult.  and i fish from shore, so i cant always position myself to cast with the wind.  i usually turn on another brake and make shorter casts if i have to cast into the wind.

fishing user avatarJoel W reply :

::)

No Way !!

I haven't had a cigarette in more then 15 years, and I only occasionally drink beer.  I have strong feelings  that it doesn't belong on any boat, let alone a fishing boat, where ones senses needs to be as sharp as possible both for finding and catching Bass, and for the safety of all concerned. Beer, and for that matter any alcohol is best left for after ones day on the water. :o

fishing user avatarWayne P. reply :

Rude fishermen are the most irritating for me. Everthing else is tolerable.

fishing user avatarCory N reply :

My least favorite condition is people cutting directly in front of me as I'm working down a bank or spot.  Just because I have 30 lbs thrust and they have 250 HP... :-/

fishing user avatarcart7t reply :

Wind. Period.

I was out yesterday, sustained winds at 20, gusts to 30.

It was ridiculous. What made it worse was a tough bite.  I normally would've picked up the pace with soft plastics or a jig but it's tough to drop a bait in front of fish and hold it there when the boat is going all over the place.

It seems like the midwest has been in a windy pattern this entire spring, on top of all the rain that's muddied up the waters.  Probably the worst spring season, conditions wise that I can ever remember.

fishing user avatarB-Ass-Mad reply :

Thunderstorms........................or Wind!

fishing user avatarwdy77 reply :

I HATE THE WIND!!!! Im in the west TN area and I have been fishing in the wind for 5 months,, when is it going to stop!!!!!!!!!!!!!    :-/
