What made you rage the most? 2024

fishing user avatarPro Logcatcher reply :

So, I am making this to make sure I am not the only one who has had this bad stuff happen. Also to entertain myself.

I was fishing in the mountains for rainbows a while ago, and I wasn't having much luck. Eventually, my uncle pointed out two trout in a small pool and I cast into it. I hooked into my first wild trout! Maybe about 14 inches or so. How did I know the length? You'll see. This trout led me on a great fight, and then it JUMPED INTO A TREE. Picture the scene: a wide-eyed guy watching a trout hanging in front of his face. I guess you all know what happened next... Sploosh! The trout was gone. Now I have been out three more times, and caught nothing. I'm posting this to help cheer me up =(

Anything you guys had happen that made you rage? Post in the thread!

fishing user avatarMontanaro reply :

Thats nothing to rage about...thats fishing and a unique story.

My father raged some the other day when his new rod and reel setup he was looking forward to using had a massive wind knot causing him to abandon using it for rest of the day.

Took my boat out in mid April for first time of the year and it's making this horrible banging noise after it's put into gear.  Whole boat shakes when it happens.  Took it to the service place 2 and a half weeks ago, finally get a call yesterday, entire lower unit is shot.  Rage?  Maybe not to that extent but with a hell of a repair bill and no fishing for what will end up being over a month, I am certainly not happy at this time.  Worst start to a season I've had.

Disrespectful people, specifically when they are doing something in public that effects others yet they are completely oblivious.  Examples include driving slower than the rest of traffic while in the fast lane, standing in the middle of a walkway as people are trying to pass, being loud and obnoxious in a place where others can't escape your noise (plane, restaurant, etc).

My old man did that to my G-Loomis rod several years ago.  He slammed the tail gait shut and it snapped my rod which was leaning there right in half.  The bad part is that it was the only rod n reel I brought that day because we were going to wade a small river and packed light.  The good news is that rod has a lifetime warranty so all he had to do was pay for shipping and I got a replacement.

That boils me too.  I've seen some pretty ugly situations at boat ramps over the years.  I call it "ramp rage."  I've learned to just try and be patient and not let it bother me.  Generally, anglers aren't the ones doing it.  Its usually recreational crafts like pontoons, wake boarding boats, and cruisers.  Ironically, those are the ones that bother me on water the most too, along with jet skis.  Sometimes there will be a double sized ramp and some moron is loading/unloading RIGHT in the middle so no one else can use it.

Welcome aboard!

For me, I busted a string when my newly upgraded

St. Croix Legend Tournament spinning rod broke as

I was pulling the truck out of the car port en route

to our vacation on a great bass lake.

I don't swear normally, but I did then. It was a stupid

mistake, the rod(s) were laying down in my kayak,

but that rod was propped up a tad over the yak (which

was mounted on my truck), when I pulled forward,

the rod caught on the straps I use to hang the kayak.

SNAAAAAAAP!  *S*%$%^$$$$

Took me a while to recover while driving to the lake....

My motor breaking down after driving two and a half hours to prefish for a tournament, and then the day before the tournament due to that part taking a few other parts with it, after paying crazy overnight shipping to get the parts on time. Now that problem caused another that may keep us out of this weekends tournament, which would ruin us from a aoy point standpoint.

That and the day my villain broke will trying to unsnag my fifth snagged lc pointer of the day, after losing my nice rubber net in an attempt to unsnag it also.  Luckily I only paid fifty bucks for the villain, but losing a total of 200$ worth of gear that day really, really hurt.

This happened 50 plus years ago, Dad and I were going fishing one morning[ we had to move out a barn of tobacco that evening, so only the morning to fish] ,times were a little hard back then and we caught our in minnows. after what looked like forever catching the minnows we were on the way. About 2 miles before we got to the lake, their was a car on side of the road with  smoke coming out from the interior of the car. Dad pulled over, the drivers seat was on fire, and you guessed it, Dad poured our minnows, water and all on the seat to put it out. No fishing that day.

I still get POED every time I think of it.

fishing user avatarGetBent reply :

Drove an hour to boat storage to load up and fish. Finally got a friend to go with me. We got up at 5am. Went to unplug the trolling motor charger- forgot last time. Battery dead. I MF'd myself about a dozen times and apologized double that. We still fished. My buddy caught fish using his baitcaster for the first time while using lures so I was happy about that. He had a good time and I caught a 4.5lbs bass so it wasn't all that bad. After we were done, and I put the boat up- I checked to make sure it was charging about 5 times lol.

fishing user avatarRichF reply :

I lost a 5 pounder that would've won my dad and I our first team tournament with a really good club in NY.  It took a second for it to process after she tail walked and spit my jig.  After my next cast, I reeled up, swore incredibly loudly, and snapped my Legend Extreme over the gunnel of the boat.  My dad, who is incredibly mellow, yelled at me for the first time since I was a kid (I was in my mid-20s at the time).  We missed first place by 0.2 lbs.

I'm certainly not proud of that moment.  I can tell you though, I've never had a meltdown like that since.  I still get emotional every now and again during tournaments, but I've matured quite a bit and can control those emotions much better now.

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

10 or so years ago I used to get bent out of shape about a lot of things.

Not so much anymore.

I can tolerate the wake boats, the jet skiers, the idiots at the launch ramp who take forever, etc.....They are just ignorant to the discomfort they might be causing, and often a calm word with them or some helpful advise will go a lot farther than acting like an unhinged lunatic.

The one thing that still turns the keys for the nuclear launch codes is other bass fisherman who act a fool. They should know better.

I don't do any of the stuff to other people that would cause me to get bent, and I expect the same in return. If you get out of your lane towards me though, your going to get an earful.........and I mean an earful.

I remember many days like that. My dad was always fishing on the cheap. We've had wheel bearings on the trailer seize en route, many flat tires and blowouts, drain plug left at home or left out(!!!), my dad getting paged to come to work when others were on call, forgetting to charge the boat battery, having to use a car battery for the boat, then killing said car battery and needing a jump, getting to the lake and remembering the gas tank is sitting in the driveway. Too many to name, really. Most are funny, looking back. I wish i could still get him to fish with me. I bought my fish & ski with that in minds, but he tells me he's too old and worn out to fool with that stuff anymore so I stopped asking.

I have gotten to the fishing hole of choice with my kayak and discovered I left my paddle home. I almost never remember to bring everything I need, especially my new action camera. Often the lure I want to use most is on a rod in my rod holder at home.

fishing user avatarjimf reply :

I've actually heard a similar story, where a trout jumped into a tree.   I can't remember where, but that's the first time I've heard of that happening believe it or not.   Great story though.

I can't think of rage, I can't think of many cases of utter disappointment.  My wife slamming the truck door on a $600 R.L. Winston fly rod, throwing a rod on my Evinrude engine many years ago, taking some OT money and buying a new prop and shearing that sucker completely off before I even got the boat off of the trailer (super low water levels, shouldn't have tried) ....

@JustinCT good vibes your way, I've been there and that is maddening and sickening waiting.   You know you are 1) missing fishing time and 2) probably going to end up with a bill.    Sucks.

I've had that happen with a double digit steelhead.  Fight was over in a flash.  Total bummer.

fishing user avatarNYWayfarer reply :

I rage over tangles that are bad enough to be cut and retied. Nothing I hate more than having to retie a rig on a boat in the wind with my eyesight.

Funniest rage story I have is when a group of my friends went fishing. The driver hit a pothole and our bucket of minnows went flying and overturned spilling water and minnows everywhere. The guy whose lap it was in was raging but the drivers rage was even better.

It seems for weeks after that trip his car would have problems starting from time to time. A costly trip to the mechanic for a diagnostic revealed that a minnow had somehow got under his mat and was laying right on his cut-off switch. Once the mummified minnow was extracted the truck had no more issues.

fishing user avatarIndianaFinesse reply :

I've had fish jump into trees before, but i managed to get them all out.  I once had a bullhead jump clear out of the water to grab my stinkbait, I was shore fishing and got the line major tangled in a bush on the shoreline and while untangling the fish jumped up and ate it.

Another time I accidentally casted across a dock, and while reeling in to get over the dock I hooked a bass.  Which would have been fine, but while reeling the small bass over top of the dock the hook so somehow got snagged in the wood planking.  I would have simply gone over and retrieved it, but there was a large rottweiler on the dock that was interested/confused as to why a fish was flopping on his dock.  He couldn't figure out what to do with it, the dog kept darting towards it while barking and quickly biting it until the bass flopped, at which it would run away from it for a few seconds. So I had to wait till the dog finally lost interest and left to retrieve the now dead fish.  Funniest thing ever to watch, a big rottweiler somewhat afraid of yet curious in a twelve inch bass.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

Rage?

Aint in my fishing vocabulary!

Even in tournament settings I'm too laid back,

Now irritated! ;)

Had plans to fish a local river system the Saturday, 6-10" of rain yesterday killed those plans.

Got call last night to fish a marsh today, 25-35 mph sustained NW wind & bluebird sky...uh no!

fishing user avatarHawkeye21 reply :

Last Thursday I was fishing a small river and it was about 38 degrees and winds up to 20 mph.  I was floating downstream back to my vehicle and casting to the shore along the way.  Managed to catch my first and only fish of the afternoon which seemed to make the trip all worth while, at least I thought.

On one cast I got my lure stuck in an overhanging tree so I had to paddle back up stream and into the wind to get it out.  It seemed as soon as I tried doing that the wind blew the hardest and longest, like it was trying to make me mad.  What made it worse was that about 20 feet down stream was another overhanging tree that the wind wanted to blow me into.  I needed to stay out of that because of my poles sticking up.

I struggled for what seemed like 10 minutes paddling up stream, trying to reel in loose line, trying to stay out of the trees, getting line tangled up in my poles, getting blown down stream and paddling back up stream.  I was cursing the wind like crazy.  I said I don't understand wind! numerous times.  I was so frustrated and was trying to paddle with one hand while the other was holding my pole and still trying to get the lure out of the tree.

At some point a raged so hard trying to paddle into a gust of wind that not only did I almost tip my kayak over but I ended up bending my paddle.  Must have been a lot of force put on it paddling into that wind and current.  It gets my blood boiling just remembering it. If I was smart I would have just cut the line, set my pole down and paddled up with two free hands then got the lure.  Or just left the d**n thing in the tree.

I didn't rage over it but the passenger in the car did.  I was driving his AMC gremlin (I think he was tired) and I was turning left onto a side road.  In order to "beat" an approaching car, I had to gun it a bit.  Unfortunately, in doing so, I dumped a bucket of minnows all over the floor and onto his legs and feet.  Like I said, he "raged" about it for a bit.  (I thought it was kinda funny).  Authors note:  It was funny because it was at the END of the day and not the beginning.

fishing user avatarEastCoastAngler reply :

My dad and I were fishing a few years ago at our "honey hole", it was getting late in the day. We had just started throwing hula poppers when it sounded like a toilet flush on my dad's. He fought this monster to the bank where it had slightly wrapped around a laydown. Another guy that was fishing with us volunteered to get the fish free from the snag. He went into the water, got the fish free, and lifted it out of the water by just the line. This bass bro 12 pound mono like it was floss. Needless to say that was the largest fish I've ever seen lost. And the guy wasn't invited to fish anymore.

fishing user avatarblckshirt98 reply :

For me it was when I went to my favorite local lake one afternoon and it was exceptionally windy (from shore, 15mph+ steady).  I was dropshotting and the wind/current kept taking my rig to places where it would get hung up and I'd have to re-tie (which in the bad wind brought my frustration level up even more).  I got hung up 5-6 times (at one point it was three casts in a row) at which point i started cussing and packed up and left.  So with driving time included it was about 2.5 hours wasted, and $10 worth of gas, a bunch of lost terminal tackle, and not a single bite.  This is why when I see heavy winds I just go home now.

Fishing out of a jon boat, went to cast a crankbait and it snagged the tip of another rod that was sticking up. Broke that rod and backlashed my other reel. Lost 2 set ups in one cast.

Another time fishing in a jon boat, standing up on the bench somehow one of my rods got knocked over the side. Luckily I was able to tie on a deep diving crank and snagged it the first cast.

Once I took my kayak crate on my buddies bass boat for a day of fishing.  My 4 rods were laying on his deck and he couldn't help but stand on them.  It wouldn't have bothered me if every setup was worth over $350.   After watching him trample them and nicely asking him to watch out for them several times, I decided to get them up and put them in the rod holders on my crate.  Of course, that means they were sticking straight up.  About a half hour later I was bombcasting a crankbait and caught the guides of my month old Megabass Orochi.  Completely ripped out two of the guides.  I didn't rage on the outside, but inside I was molten lava.  On top of that, I couldn't get any of the local repair guys to answer a call so I had to send it to Megabass USA's guy in Texas.   I spent $35 shipping each way, $20 on a rod tube, and $40 on new guides.  Now my $300 Megabass rod is worth $430. <_<

My dad went out once with my mom for an evening cruise in the pontoon. He had taken a rod with a deep diving crankbait because stripers had been schooling recently and it so happened that he ran across some. He started casting and catching and for whatever reason, my mom decided to walk up behind him as he was about to cast. Well, he floored her with his backswing of a Norman DD22. Fortunately, no hooks penetrated. But, as you can imagine, he never lived that one down.
