Ever Been To Obsessed? 2024

fishing user avatarlynyrdsky1 reply :

Been having this same conversation with my father for a couple months now. I'm realizing he may be right. He has been saying that I'm obsessed with fishing but in a bad way. Like all I talk about is fishing, even when we were duck hunting the other day all I was talking about was fishing. When I get the chances to fish I can not stay consistent. I'm always changing baits, changing rods, changing presentation, but not like I should. I'm not giving anything any time which I am now noticing due to performance results. He says that I should of showed interest years ago, and I'm overwhelming myself now with it. I've even noticed it on here that all my posts are always asking questions and I never actually contribute anything.

This all may be due to my age and inexperience but, I am just asking if anyone else has ever become "to obsessed" with fishing?

I too have become obsessed

Just shutdown my small photography businesses to have more time to,, wait for it -----,,, "more fishing"

Seems everybody wants to get married on the weekend or somehow on the day that holds the most promise for bass fishing ( I know I missed that 10 lb der when shooting a wedding or some sporting event ) >:(

I too am coming late to the game and I'm doing a lot of reading here and other places and yeah, people have stared saying all I think and talk about is, you guessed-it

I have become addicted to the strike! I'm not kidding.

See you are not alone in you obsession.

Hope this helped

First off there is nothing wrong with just asking questions, in a way believe it or not you are contributing.  Many times I'll answer a question and it will remind me of something I am not doing, or should be doing, or stopped doing in the past.

I dunno about too obsessed but I definitely have a problem with it never leaving my mind.  I have been fortunate enough to fish with quite a few talented fishermen and from each one I take bits and pieces of their overall style to make my own.  You develop this by time on the water with them and asking questions on forums such as this.  Eventually things will begin to come together more and more and your focus will shift to trying to refine techniques or finding ones that will work best for you.

If you'd like more help or have anymore questions feel free to pm me or also, my aim s/n is listed below.

Hope this helps, don't hesitate to ask any questions.

I've always fished and enjoyed it, but over the past 3 years I've became obsessed with fishing as well.  I don't really think it's a bad thing.  There's many other things we could be obsessed with or addicted to that could be worse.  Sometimes I get so sick of looking at these same forums and tackle shops over and over everyday, but I just can't stop looking at them!  ;D

There is nothing wrong with being obsessed. Been here - done that. I can recall in my early days of home ownership having to choose between monthly house payment and new trolling motor and I chose trolling motor.

Frequently changing presentations isn't being obsessed - it is experimenting, a phase every fisherman goes through. If you only have one - or just a few rigs, and you're spending more time tying knots than you are with your lure in the water - then that's a little nuts. And that's not anything to be worried about. Most everyone you meet is nuts about something.

Conversations between you and your dad about when you should have shown interest in fishing, etc. are your issues between you and your pop. I can't and won't offer any advice. That's something you get to figure out for yourself.

Pretty funny topic, because that's all I do or think about as well is bass fishing. If I don't fish every single day, then you know there's something wrong with me. This site shouldn't have been called Bass Resource, it should have been called Bass Addicts Anonymous, because I think everyone here is addicted ;D.

I too have started fishing recently.  About ten years ago I started fishing, nothing much just an old Zebco 33, a worm, an a bobber.  Then I started playing in a band and had no time to fish.  About two years ago the band thing fell apart and I needed to find another outlet.

Then I had the misfortune (as my wife would say) of fishing the Mississippi on a Ranger with a couple of bass guys.  It was all down hill from there.  I can't soak up enough information on fishing.  I am ALWAYS searching the internet, reading books and magazines, and talking to other fisherman in search of fishing knowledge.

You are not alone...

Haha yea. I think I've figured that I've spent about $1000 in the past 2 to 3 years just on equipment which I know is cheap for some. I see that my dad just doesn't want me to waste my time and money like he did for the years he fished in tournaments and circuits but he needs to know just cause he is burned out on the sport doesn't mean I am.

My neighbor got me into fishing 3 years ago - hes 69, im 27...and we are best buds now and are completely obsessed with fishing when and where we can!!  after my first year fishing with him I bought my modest bass boat and have been dumping every cent of my "fun budget" on that little boat since (as well as equipment) - I read constantly about fishing when I cant be on the water...

I do try to not talk in detail about fishing to others as they will die of boredome.....you should draw the line there - if they are not interested, dont talk about it :)

Obsession vs. Passion....now if you lose your house or go into bankruptcy because of fishing, your passion has become an "obsession" - but probably you are not obsessed, rather you are like most of us, overzealous and very passionate about what we love - and that is tricking those bass into biting the end of our line  ;D  ;D  ;D

I had a baby 3 months ago - prior to agreeing to having said baby, I told my wife my 2 days per month fishing are sacred, and must remain as a condition to the agreement - sounds wild right, and sure enough she has tried to meddle with that agreement, and I quickly shot it down - I spend every 13 days in a row working non-stop and taking care of the baby and the house, on the 14 day, I go fishing - because I am obsessed/passionate.

My neighbor's good friend is 75 years old with pulmonary fibrosis and is very sickly, has to use oxygen tanks all the time - STILL goes fishing with him, but can only stand it for about 2 hours now....we are a passionate group us anglers!!!

fishing user avatarBigEbass reply :

As far as you changing lures alot....

I FEEL YOUR PAIN...I still struggle....for me I think changing lures to the extent you are talking about can be deleterious to your results - especially if it means re-tying all the time and spending less time actually with a bait in the water (been there, done that, still fall victim from time to time).  I am trying and trying to focus more and more on finding the best spots or "spot on spots" rather now, and choice of bait takes a big back seat I think, choice of bait at that point is largely more a matter of what serves the purpose at that given depth and on that piece of structure/cover...

Everything works in my experience, but everything does not work when you present to an area that isnt prime bass habitat....how many casts have I made to areas that were low percentage?  How many times did we re-tie because rather we were not on the fish, but that same bait may very well work around the corner on that creek channel bend in 8 feet of water near that brushpile on that bend?

I am very new, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but I think we relative newB's need to focus much more on location location location....this has helped my fishing pick up slowly this past year (although I didnt get to fish very much in 2010 baahhhh).

Good luck and take care - and ask questioins - I know I do, cause we all have to learn - and its a lifelong process perhaps  :)

I been there myself. I think it can easily creep in and we dont even realize it. The good news is you can tone it back by learning to relax a bit. Ive found that I am actually fishing better and enjoying it more now that Ive curbed the obsession. Balance is close by. My wife used to get ticked because all I would talk about was fishing. Now we talk little about it, but when we do she is interested.

Doesnt mean Im not still obsessed, just that there is more balance now. I found getting back to some of the other things I used to enjoy helped.

I'm at this point too...Starting to clam down a little bit. 4 years ago i was walking 2 miles in 31 degree weather just to try and catch a fish. Ain't doing that this year.

Fishing has been a hobby for years for me. Even though i just started back up again 6-7 years ago targeting strictly bass mostly these days,I'm enjoying it even more now than i did in the past.I try to pace myself,I really don't want to burn out. I plan to fish when i can till I'm 6 feet under. The key is don't let it get to you.Keep it as it is a "hobby". Don't let it completely take over your life though,it'll become something you regret then.

Well said, BigEbass!

I think you need to be very passionate to be in this sport. It can be a very humbling sport if you don't put the time into it.

For me, the passion is to get away from the stresses of life for a while. A lot of guys I know would rather go to the pub or something, but I'd rather channel my energy on the water.

Some days on the water are better than others. After a good day, you recap what you did, what techniques you used, the conditions of the water and day, how you felt that day both physically and mentally and store that information away until the next time.

The bad days make you wonder what went wrong, what techniques you could have or should have used, was the focus/concentration there and you take mental notes so you can adjust for the next time you feel the day on the water is slipping away from you.

I'm constantly thinking about both those scenarios, so yeah, I'm obsessed, but passionate sounds better... ;D

Obsessed maybe...but Passionate, For Sure! I think this is a better way to put your thoughts and actions in order!

IMO, a passionate person has very strong feelings about something or a strong belief in something...Those of us who become committed to learn more, to be better, automatically become more involved to any endeavor or subject thus being more passionate about it.

Passion - Persistance - Preparation... IS NOT OBSESSION, that's what makes us more successful, and in anything we undertake.

The three P's are not for the lazy and/or the weak at heart.

If you're passionate about Fishing... you'll FISH.

Sounds like we're all a bunch of Passionate fishermen around here, huh!

No, I've never been to obsessed.  Where is it located?  Just yankin' your chain.  Trust me, there are those on this forum who are real sticklers regarding spelling and grammar-if you haven't already figured that out.

Yes, sometimes I think I'm too obsessed.  The problem is two fold for me.  First, I haven't found too many other people around here who share my obsession.  Second, since the ice is still too thin to walk on, I can't go out and turn my related obsession into a compulsion (ice fishing).
