x2.....I just have nothing else to say that is constructive on this issue.
Wow. This is heartbreaking! My prayers go out to that family. So very sad.
We just aren't safe anywhere in the this world we live in now. You can't go to work, the movies, the mall, to church! ...young kids can't go to school or walk down the street unsupervised, young people can't go to college without fear...Police officers can't go out and do their job without worrying if they'll make it home to see their family and they have to think of this every day...Anglers can't even go fishing without worrying about being robbed or worse. Makes me sick.
Trying times we live in now, can't even step outside without being attacked. I would like to take a moment to thank our public servants including police, fireman, EMTs, as well as former and active military for dedicating themselves to keeping us safe.
if you are a friend or family member of his please allow me to extend my condolences and to let you know that by no means am I the only one saying prayers on you(all's) behalf.
Very sad, indeed. Awful news.
R.I.P. Gregg Hawkins. My condolences to his family & friends.
Horrible. Makes me unbelievably angry that people are capable of this. Yet they are. God bless him and his family.
May God take you on his bass fishing team Gregg. RIP.
I'm fishing in the dark alone but my buddy with his Freinds are protecting me. They don't like me being interrupted when I'm fishing.
Fight crime shoot back.
So it was a robbery? If anyone hears any updates on this story please post them here. I would like to know if/when they make an arrest. This story made me angry as well as sad.
Exactly why people should carry guns themselfs.

It happened about sixty miles from where I live. I will try and keep up with it and post any new info. Like you, I am angered as well as saddened by this senseless cowardly act.
Let us know if a Go Fund Me is set up to help this young mans family.
Very sad when you can't be safe enjoying a fishing outing.
Tom
This is very sad indeed. I hope he gets caught and put away for good.
Such a senseless act. I'm truly at a loss for words.
I'd also like to know about any updates as far as law enforcement catching the coward who did this, or ways to help his family.
7 years ago a wise man told me; Sheat runs down hill..
My condolence
Awful situation.
And we place ourselves in these situations all the time when we launch at dawn or trailer at dusk.
Another reason to be armed while on the water.
My sincere condolences and prayers to the family for a senseless and cowardly crime.

Well said Sam.
Walk softly and carry a gun.

Very sad, sounds like he was/is a man of God and with that he is on a huge lake with nothing but 15lb+ bass right now. May his family & friends find peace in God in these trying times.
How soon everyone forgets the night fisherman in Boston being stabbed to death with his own knife. About two to three decades ago. After reading about these senseless murders we think about the copycats.
I carried a 1911 with 8 mags on me with a box of ammo in the car right after Boston happened when night fishing. Never fish alone.
I think if anything will ever happen it would be at an ATM.
I don't use ATM's. Nothing is safe anymore.
Anytime I use an ATM I'm always keep a watchful eye. Having situational awareness is very helpful in keeping you and others safe.On 10/25/2015 at 2:22 AM, bigbill said:How soon everyone forgets the night fisherman in Boston being stabbed to death with his own knife. Sad .... just plain sad.
Sad ..only thing that stops bad guys with guns is good guys with guns.the police are way to heavy to carry 24/7
I was outside in the car while my son used the ATM. The guy sitting down drinking a coffee was watching my son. The door in front of my car was the only way out of the place. Luckily he never made a move.On 10/25/2015 at 3:54 AM, HoosierHawgs said:Anytime I use an ATM I'm always keep a watchful eye. We have to watch and be aware of our surroundings now. I good guy can't even go fishing. Once a person decides to ccw carry it's a 27/4/365 day job like your keys and wallet.
Society surely has changed.
Here is a good article on situational awareness. http://www.artofmanliness.com/2015/02/05/how-to-develop-the-situational-awareness-of-jason-bourne/On 10/25/2015 at 6:13 AM, bigbill said:I was outside in the car while my son used the ATM. There are lots of good books on defense. I have a few of them. Great winter reading.
Prayers to his family.Times are changing and not for the better.
I read about the NYC officer killed and heard his last radio call.
Then I read about the police k9 killed in action. Now a fisherman. Not good. My thoughts and prayers go out for everyone.
I'd love to move to my place hidden in the mountains.

Yep......people ask when/where I carry......I tell them everywhere/all the time......if you knew something was going to happen on the trip/errand.......I wouldn't go. You NEVER know when you will need to defend yourself....keep your head on a swivel.
Again....prayers to his family.
Even the family members and some Freinds don't know I'm packing. It's the element of surprise if something goes down.
I teach every family member to learn the location of the exits and hiding out places when there eating out or at the mall. Don't ever kick in the panic mode keep your head on straight and your mind into survival mode. Look at and remember where all the closet exits are. What if the lights went out. Yes there are battery exit signs but what if they went out. Trust nothing to go right. Rely on yourself to get out with your family. Get them to a safe area.
Don't trust me. Sit at your kitchen table, at night. Close all lights, close your eyes and try to get out. Now light the lights count the steps and turn to the door. Now put the lights out and try it again. My point when you walk in a restaurant count the steps, how many steps to a turn. It's not hard to remember which direction the door is in to get out. Stay calm just this could save your life.
Godbless
That's terrible. Not surprising the way things are going in this country......I think we need to start firing up the electric chairs.....
Condolences for his family. Hopefully Justice will be served.
Some perspective for those that say nowhere is safe anymore...we have never been safer than we are now. Violent crime, including murder, is down 50% from 20 years ago. Even with the wars in the Middle East, total deaths from violence around the world are at historical lows. Some things are getting worse, but overall the world is continuing to get better every day.

According to what sources? The current DOJ ? FBI? Ask the folks in the Middle East if their lives & their family's lives are better than they were 20 years ago..you need to gain perspective my friend, that false narrative doesnt fly around here.
Nice try though...
I don't see any need to bring politics or personal beliefs into this guys. I personally am guilty of it because I responded to a statement I STRONGLY disagreed with in this topic a day or two ago. I thought about it and quickly came back to delete what I said. But a moderator (Doing their jobs well) had already deleted my post and the posts of a couple other guys who got too political.
Regardless of where any of us stand on political issues, I think we can all agree to just hope the perpetrator is brought to justice in this case.
I can't wait till I'm 21 so I can get a concealed carry license, the lake I fish a lot of times has zero people in the boat ramp area so if somebody decided to rob me I'd be screwed.
What a terrible thing for this family and his friends! My thoughts and best wishes to them.

The FBI is one source and it isn't a false narrative. Klebs01 is correct about the United States, and the world in general.

This information is available to all if you do research, and by research I don't mean listening to or reading the sources that always feed you information that coincides with one's preconceived opinion on the subject. That is a sure path to thinking one is knowledgeable while being misinformed. Original source documents are often available if you take the time to find them.
The fact that we are even having this conversation is just a shame. Just a great man who was enjoying something he loves. Very disappointing. Thoughts sent his family's way if by chance they are reading this.

Catch and Grease,
Come to Indiana. We issue carry permits at age 18.

Excellent post Senile1. The world is still a dangerous place, though we can't live our lives in fear. I am a big advocate for concealed carry, but it is not a guarantee of anything. For all we know this fisherman could have been carrying. My point is we do the best we can, and life happens.
Sad, senseless.
My condolence to the family.
This happened in my backyard. I fish from this ramp a few times a year. It is very sad what happened to Greg this day.
A fellow angler was killed while doing something we all love to do. When Gregg Hawkins left his house on Friday, October 16th, returning safely was probably not a concern of his. Unfortunately, Gregg was killed as he returned to the Mona Boat Ramp on the Stones River outside Smyrna, TN. The suspect(s) is still on the loose and a very small reward is being offered for information leading to their arrest.
WE NEED YOUR HELP!
In an effort to raise money for the family and reward amount, the kayak angling community is coming together to raise awareness and funds. This senseless murder happened in our backyard this time. Could it happen in your backyard next time? Please help us spread the word and raise the funds this family deserves to bring these criminals to justice.
If you have information regarding this case, please call Rutherford County Crime Stoppers at 615-893-7867.

Boat ramps are a dangerous place, most are not patrolled, and not well lit. Unfortunately we see a lot of criminal acts going on at our boat ramps.

Not a lot of news out there yet. Apparently happened not at dawn or dusk, but in broad daylight at 11 AM. One article said he was returning from fishing with family....walked to get his vehicle and interrupted a 'crime in progress'.
Sad and senseless indeed.
RIP.
Be careful out there guys.
I have no words. It's hard to believe that such a piecefull sport, that doesn't involve bullets and powder at all, could ended up with shooting.
Iv'e been in situations at various boat ramps very early in the morning where people in a car were parked. No boat, no trailer just sitting in a car watching me. There were times when it made the little hairs on the back of my neck stand up and I left and went to a different lake. Some launch sites are very secluded and it makes you realize how vulnerable you could be to someone with evil on their mind. Sadly, just one more reason to carry.
Such a sad state of affairs. I'm sure he was look forward to a wonderful day with nature and a low life had another plan. You just never know what could happen these days. Even our police are targets. Conceal carry is looking better and better. God bless his family and loved ones during this difficult time. I am so sorry for their loss.
My prayers go out to this family. All I can say is that the killer will reap what he sowed.
This is horrible.
This happen last Oct. anybody know if the slime killer was caught ?
The Rutherford County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate the murder of Gregg Hawkins. The local resident was shot and killed at the Mona Boat Ramp on October 16, 2015 after a morning of fishing with his 19-year old daughter.
Detective Dan Goodwin feels confident that the murderer likely told someone something about the crime, which is not hearsay...
Hawkins was likely killed after walking up on a crime in progress when he went to retrieve his truck.
Anyone who has information about the murder is asked to call lead Detective Kyle Norrod at 615-904-3043 or Detective Capt. David Hailey at 615-904-3113.
