I'm assuming ill get alot of people saying pointers anyways but, pointers are a bit too much for me, I'm still in high school and have no job, so i usually wont buy a lure over $10 plus ive never even used a jerk bait so i definitely wont pay for a pointer to start out. Just comment your favorites besides the lucky craft pointer.
Smithwick- Rogues classic producing jerkbaits
Rapala-xrap nice baits for the money...
bass pro shops stuff don't look to bad...never used one personally
Academy Sports H2O baits are inexpensive and work well. Rick Clunn STX jerbaits are good too, might need a hook change.
You may want to look at the Luck "E" Strike RC. I have one but havent fished it yet.
Luck-E-Strike Rick Clunn Stx, Excaliber EEeratic shad are two that I tried and had good success with last year. With the RC Stx getting a slight nod for smallmouth, and the Excaliber seemed to be a better LM and pike bait. I will try the SK KVD's this coming season. I have always had the Spro Mcstick on my try list, but for some reason I have not yet. I was never a big fan of X-raps, I caught fish on them, but I got way too many duds right out of the package, baits that would sink like rocks, leak, float, etc....I did like the husky jerks though, and for many many years they were my go to suspending jerkbait.
My favorite is a L**** C**** P****er. But I really like the Rapala XRap. I throw it a lot.
I did buy two of the Luck E Strike STX jerkbaits last month to see wht was all the fuss about, and it is a great jerkbait for 8 bucks. ( if any of y'all buy these, change the split rings and add quality hooks). I found out hard way. Otherwise a good bait.
Suggestion. Start out with the Smithwick Rogue. They are 5 bucks or so and they are proven baits.
I love the Owner Cultiva Rip'n Minnow 65 and 70 but they are getter more expensive and harder to come by. I also like the Damiki Striker 90, and Yo-Zuri Sashimi Jerkbait. For a good bait on a budget I'd say Bomber Long A, Spro McStick, Strike King Wild Shiner, or the classic Smithwick Rogue. I personally wouldn't pay $8 for the Luck-E-Strikes, they are $4 baits MAX...not worth it.
I use the Bomber Long A most of the time. Second is Rogue.

Why dont you think the LS is a $8 bait? Just courious...
Rapala x raps, BPS XPS pro series, Lucky Strike RC, I like the old Rebels, gotta tweak em a little with suspend dots or solder on the trebels, but if u can get em right the bass love em.
X2 on the H2O baits from Academy, every H2O bait I've tried perform very well, and the price is outstanding.
Luck E Strike and Excaliber Erratic shad are my two favorite cheaper jerkbaits. The X rap is a good bait too but just doesn't seem to produce as well as other jerkbaits for me.
I had a lot of luck with the Spro Mcstick 95 this fall, a few bass every trip. Oh, and the pike liked it too
SPRO McSTICK IS MY FAVORITE.
Check your message box.
Rapala husky jerk.
I have just started fishing with jerkbaits. That said, I caught the most fish on a pearl Rick Clunn lucky strike jerkbait, closely followed by a bone colored Eeratic shad jerkbait.
I have caught more fish on the XRap than with any other jerkbait.
Im going to cabelas today and im going to pick up a few luck e strike rc stx jekrks

For me it's the overall quality of the bait. I don't like the hooks, saw one in the package that had a broken hook and, including the RC cranks, I've seen alot of shorty manufacturing...off center line tie, off aligned hooks, cracks in the body and bill. I just don't think the quality is there compared to others at that price, they're almost the same price as an X-rap and are far behind them in quality.
Yozuri Pins minnow is the best jerkbait ive ever used followed by the xrap. I think the pointer is a great bait but overrated...
The Excaliber Erratic Shads are great lures for the price. Hard bodied jerk baits are my absolute favorite kind of lures to throw and I have never spent over $10 on any of them. The Erratic Shads have great action and run true straight out of the box. Get a couple of them and you will be pleased with how well they perform. I am not a fan of X-Raps just because I have never done well with them but I know people who absolutely love them as well. There are definitely good options out there without have to spend the big bucks on jerk baits, but recommend the Excaliber Erratic Shad.
Diawa DB Minnow, Bomber Long A
I like the XCalibur EEratic Shad, it's a great bait for the money. The H20 baits are also really nice and the price can't be beat. The only thing about their jerkbaits is the only one that suspends is the deep diving model. The 2 shallow jerkbaits are floaters. You might also check out the new Strike King KVD jerkbaits. I haven't used or even bought one yet but they look awesome. The color patterns are outstanding and it comes in 2 sizes.
Over the years, the Smithwick Rogue has been my biggest producer.
Was wondering if you could tell me what the difference in action between a deep diving husky jerk and a deep diving X-rap is? It's possible you've never used either (deep diving version, i mean) but maybe you knew...On 1/6/2013 at 11:54 PM, Dwight Hottle said:Rapala husky jerk.

Long ago....over 20 years or so, the Rogue in black back, gold side, orange bottom was THE bait at TOLEDO BEND, La./Tx.

I use a lot of the deep diving huskies. Probably have two boxes of them. I use them to cover deeper water. They will run as deep as 17-18 feet on a long line, small dia braid. The husky deep divers & smithwick deep divers have a similar action but subtly different.. I don't use the X-rap deep diver much. They have a more erratic action then the husky but are smaller in profile. The husky is better in colder water and the X-rap is better as a warmer water bait when the bass are more willing to chase.
the spro mcstick in the 110 and 95 and the husky jerk by rapala.
Rogue
My favorite is still the Smithwick Rogue. Sometimes you have to play with them so they susspend right but when you get them right they catch fish.
Wow, no one here using Vision 110's.....

If you missed it, the goal was to provide the OP with some ideas on jerkbaits that are cheaper to buy and learn on (lose) than pointers. The MB Vision 110 simply doesn't fit that criteria.
Rogue but bought me a McStick to try out this year, they look good.
MirrOLures are pretty good good for me and have better color patterns that are more realistic than most. Koppers Live Target Herrings look pretty sweet. X-Raps are okay but the bills are very fragile.

He said keep it at or under $10.

Thank you sir!

LC Flash Minnow 115. You can find them used for about $12. At $8 - $10, X-raps are a rip off. The bill isn't durable, and 3/4 of them don't run right out of the box. Husky Jerks don't seem to have that problem. Smithwick Rogues are a good option if you don't want to spend too much.
Snook tear up a jerk baits finish after just a few catches. I found the generic lure bodies that netcraft sells to be a economic alternative and you can put on your own preference of hook. The cost its low but color choices are limited. On the plus side there colors copy lucky crafts. Mirrorlure Mirrodines and Catch 2000 are good durable cheaper alternatives too as is the original Rebel Minnow.
Definitely check out the daiwa DB minnow. Very good hooks, suspends perfectly, and it has great colors. Best feature? Its only $6.
The LC Pointer is one of those baits that you should save your nickels and dimes until you can afford to buy one... it's that good.

I'm surprised no one on here has suggested the Rapala original floating minnow. Once the water warms up a bit, that thing will get eaten when nothing else will. Cast out, let the ripples settle, then one twitch. Let the ripples settle again, then two twitches. Repeat. I've caught a ton of fish doing this.
I don't know about the rest of the country, but in Missouri, the tournament record of the Lucky Craft Pointer is unmatched. The spring jerkbait window isn't open that long. I'd go ahead and save my pennies for a few Lucky Craft Pointers.
That being said, I hear about more and more guys each year throwing the Vision 110.
