New Competition For Basspro And Cabelas? 2024

fishing user avatarFelix77 reply :

Looks like Dicks Sporting Goods is opening up a new line of stores similar to BassPro and Cabelas.  It will be under the "Field and Stream" brand.  The first is in PA and others are rumored to open up including one in my backyard.

Cool. The more the merrier!

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

Cool, maybe Buffalo and/or Rochester will get one. Kind of lean around here for that stuff. The Gander Mtn. in Henrietta is bad, the Dicks pretty much right across the road in Marketplace Mall is ok, probably the best one in the Rochester area. In and around Buffalo the Gander in North Tonowanda is much better than the Henrietta store, and the Dicks in Galleria Mall is ok, but like the Rochester area the rest of the Dicks are pretty lame. BPS is an hour and a half drive for me, and frankly, unless I am bored, or have another reason to go that way, I don't really care much for it. I have been in other BPS's in other cities and the one in Auburn has been the worst.

fishing user avatarMrSwimJig reply :

It will be interesting to see what comes of it.  More choices is never a bad thing.

fishing user avatartomustang reply :

Sounds good to me.

Nice to see a Dick's store going to focus on the 'roots', well a lot more than what's in DSG now

fishing user avatarScorcher214 reply :

Would love to get one by me. Lol, the DSG by me doesn't carry enough fishing tackle. I'd like having a outdoor specialty store near me.

fishing user avatarAK-Jax86 reply :

I live in Jacksonville FL I have 2 by me the one in the town center has an extensive collection of hunting and fishing gear and the other one ain't too shabby either. I would like to see them open up or concert one into the field and steam concept you are talking about. I like bass pro shop but for some reason there is not one here

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Competition is always good for consumers.

fishing user avatarjhoffman reply :

I dont understand opening these big stores in major cities. Do that many outdoor enthusiasts live in major cites? I simply dont see that going hand in hand with an outdoor lifestyle. The city drives me insane.

I always wondered why they choose the locations they do. Lets look at bass pro and cabelas within pa. Both, in the south east corner of the state. The majority of the recreation is found in the north central and north west portion of the state.

If I was in charge at one of those corps. I wouldve put mine right smack in the center of the state. Equal driving distance for everyone. Or better yet, I wouldve opened bass pro on the way to Lake Erie or Raystown. Epicenters of fishing! Im sure they choose locations based on traffic but when the bass pro isles are empty in except for sales days something is wrong. If you wouldve put that bass pro at raystown it wouldve been a sure thing it wouldve been full from Apr->October almost daily.

fishing user avatarFishing Rhino reply :

I'm sure they do in depth marketing studies to determine locations, and one of the prime factors has to be population densities in various areas.  They also study demographics, but basically it boils down to this.  They build 'em where the money is.

fishing user avatarfowlskies reply :

That is awesome!!!  I live 40 mins. north of Latham in the Glens Falls area.  The closest BPS or Cabela's is 3-4 hrs away, I always wondered why they wouldn't put one in Albany, I mean if you travel north on I-87 on a Friday night or Sat. morning and look at the traffic heading north to Saratoga, Lake George or the Adirondacks it only makes sense to put one there.  I lived in Albany for a few yrs and when I'd head north to visit the family on weekends the traffic was almost as bad as rush hour with people escaping to the Adirondacks.

On another note there is talk about a Cabelas coming to my backyard off of Exit 17 that will be viewable from I-87 to catch the people heading north to the Adirondacks, but that is a good 5-8 yrs away.  They are trying to develop the Exit 17 corridor with all the new microchip plants coming to the area and are looking at Cabelas being the anchor store for a new shopping mall and business district.

Bass Pro?

fishing user avatargripnrip reply :

Interesting.  I have an old boss that I worked for at Home Depot that now is a manager at Academy.  He says Dick's is supposed to put a store where I live and I am wondering if that type of store is coming to this area.  In Tulsa we have 2 Academy's and 3 Dick's.  Bass Pro is close by in Broken Arrow.  I would be thrilled to see this happen.  A place that carry's loads of gear other than Wally world would be awesome!

fishing user avatarDarren. reply :

Please make it so down here in the Hampton Roads area!!!

fishing user avatartrailer reply :

I'm lucky. They are building a BassPro just 10 minutes away from my house. We are a rural state but they picked a major interstate interchange for the location. Every week I drive by and see more progress to my heart's delight. In the past I had to drive to Memphis, Shreveport or Branson/Springfield.

I figured I might be the only fisherman in Rochester who hasn't been to the BPS Auburn store. Sounds like I haven't missed out on a lot.

I don't buy much tackle these days compared to my younger days, but even my modest needs can't be met by the combination of Dick's and Gander.

fishing user avatarFelix77 reply :

Agree about the Auburn BPS. It's tiny and limited compared to any other I have been to. I go to the Foxboro MA one if I am bored. Kills me because I am a Giants fan. :)

Just hope they don't hire the people that work at the other dicks stores. Every Dicks store I have ever been to has had horrible customer service and nobody who worked in the hunting fishing department had a clue.

I submitted a resume before in regards to a part time position in the lodge. I have torn bows down to individual parts and rebuilt them, plus all the fishing experience, never even had an email.

I've never been to the Cabela's in Hamburg and not seen a full parking lot. I was there yesterday to pick something up at 9am when they opened and the lot was already half full.

Someone does their research.

fishing user avatarKoofy Smacker reply :

First ones are going in Pittsburgh and Harrisburg I think. DSG is based just outside of Pittsburgh so they are keeping it close. They WILL be carrying handguns as well as a lot more fishing and hunting stuff. I have seen new stuff being added to the inventory daily which is all stuff that DSG doesnt carry in their stores

Hey, I'm from Rochester too. I live in Ontario right now but lived in Greece for awhile. Nice to see fellow locals on here.

We have a Gander Mountain in Florence, Al.  I think in the six months or so that it has been open I have bought one crankbait from them.  The Dick's Sporting Goods in the same town has good service and fair prices.  They had the same price as BPS on the depth finder that I recently bought.

As much as I don't want to agree with you but yeah. The only BPS in Ontario, Canada is the one just outside of Toronto in Vaughn. You figure in the metropolitan area it's located in there are at least four million people, which is probably just under half the population for the entire province. We may per capita hunt and fish far more up north but you aren't potentially drawing upon millions of people...and every time I drive by the Vaughn BPS the parking lot is full -- summer or winter.

Ah well.

It's an hour away. Gander MT....bout a half hour, Dicks is seriously no more than 10 minutes from me. I do most of my shopping online but it would be nice to be able to go into a store and hold a reel or rod before i buy it.

fishing user avatarAvalonjohn44 reply :

Cool, I like the concept of another big outdoor store. If only because when they close up shop in 2 years I can get a lot of baits on clearance... ;)

fishing user avatarThe Rooster reply :

We're getting a regular DSG store. I'm interested since it will be just ten minutes, maybe not even that long, away from my house, but it will just have the same stuff I can buy at my local tackle shops. I hope it doesn't cause problems for those guys, I'd far rather shop with them over a box store. I know they will have things that DSG won't, plus I get deals with them sometimes, and also, there's just the "feeling" you get when you go in and they know you and you know them.

fishing user avatarBlues19 reply :

Closest store other than Walmart that sells fishing stuff is a Bass Pro or Academy in Springfield Mo. So I splurge when I have to drive an hour and a half. I wish they had something closer. Even if it was Walmart creating an outdoor store. I would love it. Sounds like the Dicks will be up north where as Academy is south.

What problems have you had at the Auburn store?  I have always had a great experience with that store and the customer service

fishing user avatarpymy bassin reply :

I have been to the DSG in Cranberry Twp and have to admit their hunting and fishing section is ALOT better than the normal stores. It's a 2 story building and almost the entire up stairs is hunting/fishing related. It's gonna be a tough choice for me now, cause I live an hour from it and an hour from Erie where they are putting up a new cabalas in the mill creek mall. Guess only time will tell how good the cabelas is once they build it. It's supposed to be very small though.

Personally, I like the Auburn store well enough.  It is far better than my local Rochester-area Dicks and Gander Mountain stores, which tend to have pretty limited selection (Dicks worse than Gander).  There are plenty of sales people at BPS, and all pretty nice.  I've never really tried to test the limits of their knowledge (or mine :)), so I can't really comment on that.  I will say, though, that every time I'm there, the rod selection is somewhat limited, at least on the higher end.  If I drive an hour to visit, I want to be able to handle the best gear, try my reel out to feel the balance, you know, kick the tires.

Anyway, it is a minor gripe.  I only go there a couple of times a year, generally for the spring sale and when I'm in the area visiting family in Syracuse and have some time to kill.  For me, it is more about getting excited for the season than buying necessities, which I can get on line at BPS or just as easily at places like TW.

Anyway, I'd love it if they put one of the new Field and Stream stores near me.  Competition is always good.

fishing user avatarchromedog reply :

I hear ya.  They tend to overload on BPS brand rods and have very few of anything else.  Sometimes it can be really limited.

There is also a rumor that they are opening up the Cabelas just outside of Albany Airport near Wolf Road. Read it on the Times Union.

I use to live right off Wolf Rd on Sand Creek.  I'm kinda interested in where they would put it on the north end of Wolf.

I wonder if they will go for a BPS off exit 17, the article I read in the PostStar said it was would be either or and that both stores were interested in the area and were aiming more towards Cabelas.

It's be nice to be able to go somewhere else other than Dick's and Walmart for my hunting & fishing supplies/needs.  Only been to the Sports Authority a couple times on Washington Ave Ext. but wasn't impressed.
