Do you direct tie your crankbait or use a snap swivel?
No brainer for me, I direct tie everything.
For crankbaits....a snap, specifically a #2, 3 or 4 Duo-Loc snap. No swivel!
Direct tie on most.
sometimes I'll use a duo-loc but for the most part I direct tie
It depends. If the crankbait has a split ring on the front eye, then I tie directly. If there is no split ring, then I use a clip. I like to have that degree-of-freedom level in place.
I forgot to mention that I remove all split rings from the line tie. Even the oval style are the source of most foul running baits.
i use the snaps,,,not swivels,,,allows me to change colors or size very quickly...
I used to use snaps all the time. I didnt have much luck so i tied directly to the bait and started catching some bass. Makes no sense but i am now direct tie only even though it takes some time to change baits.
Norman Speed Clips on all cranks, but only after I remove the split ring.

I use a SNAP ONLY on all crankbaits.
I also take off the split-ring.
I think the poll might be a little skewed - - as some of the "direct tie" people might be tying directly to a split-ring, which would not actually be DIRECT tying.
Direct tying to a crankbait's line-tie is one of the best ways I know of to kill the action.
Question, why do you guys not use the swivel but you use the snaps?

I think the better question might be - why WOULD you use a swivel. Crankbaits don't spin in a circle.....using a swivel is just a bunch of unneeded weight and hardware.

Oh ok, thats something I didn't think of.
Thanks for the quick answer.
I didn't vote because it all depends on how lazy I'm feeling. I either tie on directly or use a snap.
Berkley Cross-Lok snaps. No split rings.
Direct Tie
One exception is during vacation.
For instance, many Canadian lakes offer multiple opportunities (e.g. largemouth, smallmouth, walleyes & pike).
When I get tired of cutting & retying, I'll sometimes use a No.2 Duolock Snap (Offshore Angler) without a swivel.

I use a Normal Speed Clip or a crosslock snap after I remove the split ring. I'd like the Speed Clips to have a little larger ring, say the size of a #2 split ring, but I'm generally happy with them and have never lost a fish on one. It sure makes changing crankbaits easy!
O rings for me. I have no trouble with them or retieing. I haven't experimented with trying straight to the lure but I have read that it takes away from the action of the bait. You guys will have to tell me yall's take on that

If there's a split ring I tie directly to that, if not I add one then tie to it.
No-swivel snap for me with the split ring removed.
I don't fish cranks much, but when I do, the majority of the time I tie with a Rapala knot.
If I'm going to do some experimenting with cranks, I'll use a snap, only for expedience sake.
Direct tie with a rapala knot.
I used to use snaps. Now, I just direct tie everything.

Direct tie. My feeling is that the snap swivel is adding something to your line/lure that will cause it to look unnatural.
I'll use a snap and hook on to the lure's split ring if it has one. If I can get a pattern down, or find a lure that they are hitting, then I'll tie directly to the split ring.
I usualy tie to the lure but lately I have been considering the snap swivel. My 9 year old daughter uses one for everything (she is scared of getting hooked when tying knots) and the last 5 or 6 times that I have taken her fishing, she has out fished me while using the snap swivel. I might just have to give it a try.
Smallest Rosco Duolock snap I can get away with that is tested above line test I'm using. Usually size 51 or 52. Don't like tying to the split ring as the knot always seems to move to the split portion. Oval shaped split rings are better.
If I'm not sure what they want I'll use a snap so I can change baits easily. Once I figure it out I'll tie direct.
If I'm running cranks through timber or trees I always tie direct.
I use snap/swivels on all my lures. I thought it would just give them more action, and, I can't see as good as I use to keep retying my knots, so it helps. But, after reading Stringjams post, I dont know why I've been using a snap/swivel . I think I'll change to just a snap.
I used to use swivels but then I went to direct tie. I don't think it matters that much but I really love direct ties.
direct tie only
A question for those who remove the split ring. Why? I use snaps only, and if it has a split ring attach to it, if not to the tie. I am a CB novice, so please explain. Does it affect the action? Or is it a fouling issue?
I tie everything but my brother-in-law just pick up some speed clips...said they give the lure more action...don't know personaly.

and those big hooks hanging down look natural?i use a snap with no split ring.

It creates an unnecessary joint that absorbs some of the crankbait's action.
Direct tie for me.Never tried a snap swivel.
