I received some money and feel the bait monkey wispering in my ear. What top water lures do you/would you like to have in your bass kit?
Luchy Craft Sammy and Gunnish.
RI Vixen and BL Vixen
I like skitter walks
Rebel's Zell Roland Model Pop-R, Bone White
Zara Spook, Rico,Torpedo and Buzzbait.
Yello Magic, Zel Pop, Rico and Sammy
Heddon tiny torpedo
Jitterbug
Pop-r
Buzzbait, black and white
More expensive baits:
LC G-Splash 65
LC Gunnish 95
LC Sammy 100
Allen
Pop-R, Tiny Torpedo, and Zara Spook.
Pop-R, jitterbug, spooks, buzzbaits, floating tubes, frogs, chug bug,
Snagproof Frog in the lilly pads. Around timber Ive had my best success with Heddon torpedo and a Strike King buzzbait.
CHUGBUG
Jitterbug, Skitter Walk, Spit'n King, Buzzbait
Jason
black buzzbait!!!
I'd go with the old standbys and try to get a qty of nice lures rather than a few real expensive ones. So IMHO skip all the LCs.
*3 buzzbaits (Lunker lure are still the best IMO). White, Chart and Black (3/8 or 1/2).
*2 walking types lures. Either skitterwalks or spooks. Rapalas rattle like crazy. Spooks are more quiet. I am of the opinion here that color doesnt matter for topwater baits such as these. The thing to remember here is that the fish is looking up and will be pretty much blinded by the sun. It will only see the outline.
*2 Poppers. I like chugbugs but Pop-Rs are just as good. Again, color and brand not so important here.
*2 Prop baits. I would go with a devil's horse and a torpedo just to mix up the profiles.
*1 Jitterbug (cause you never know when you might need it).
That's less than $60 and should take care of most situations.
Hope that helps.

Well folks, after huntin' bass for over 4 decades, I'd have to say my #1 surface lure for SMBass is easily the Tiny Torpedo by Heddon! I've caught Smallies on this lure, everywhere I've ever tried it. Don't be afraid to try different things with this killer bait. While you're pausin' it or sof-twitchin' it, a bassie will come up and bust it for you, if you're doin' it just right! 8-)
Now for the Bigmouths, in sloppy, weedy water, I go along with Culprit and say that I've Walked more than my share of scrappy largemouths with Bill Normans Weed Walker than I can even remember. My ex used to hang a pork frog on the back of her WW and always ended the day with bigger bass than I did. I never did let on that without the pork I could usually spank her. There is something special about seeing a smiling woman with a six pound hog bass drapped over her thumb! 8-)
May the hogs attack yer surface lures everytime on the lake this year folks... ;D

Super Spook Jr.'s have been very good to me over the years but lately the quality has crashed..... The Sammy 100 size is my go to topwater now. Also experimenting with the new Sebile topwaters that are filled with mineral water and moving glitter inside.

Same here
You have to be more specific.
Cloudy, windy day? Noise makers - pop-r, chug bugs, buzz baits.
Calm blue bird day? walk the doggers like sammies and zara spooks
Slop/Heavy cover? Toads - Zoom
Frogging is my favorite! I'd buy lots of soft plastic toads.

My favorite is a bullfrog coloured pop-r and one we use here locally in and around surface weeds is a grey weedlees rubber mouse
Reading this thread make me anxious for summer! #1 all around producer for me is the Heddon Tiny Torpedo. I also like twitching the original floating Rapala in size 11 or 13, fishing it real slow is deadly. I also like the Devil's Horse. I've never had a lot of luck with poppers, but it's a confidence thing with me....like most guys I stick with what has worked in the past, and that usually means the Torpedo, Devil's Horse or Rapala. There have been times though that I've had good success with Buzzbaits and Jitterbugs.
Strike King spit-n-king, chugbug, super spook jr., Hart ticker buzzbait, Horny toad, Snag Proof bobby's perfect frog
My Favorites are
Super Spook & Spook Jr.
Lucky Craft Sammies
Storm Chugbug
Booyah Buzzbaits
and a follow up for when they miss
zoom fluke
The most effective topwater lure I've ever used is a 3/8 oz. black Booyah Buzzbait, aka "Killa". Black blade, skirt, head, and red eyes. Its got a small metal tab that slaps the blade on each rotation that makes a "clank" sound. Unbelievable how effective this bait really is.
Second choice is a Zoom Horny Toad, and a third is a Sizmic Pop N' Toad.
My favorite topwater is a buzzbait - - I prefer a fairly light one with a large enough prop that it can be crawled - and has a very prominent "squeak."
After that - Storm Chug Bug, a good Frog, walking baits already mentioned, etc....
One tip on the Torpedo - try tying some feathers on the rear hook. After all these years they are still killer baits, and also the topwater I hooked (and lost :-[) the biggest bass of my life on.
zara spook...of course
jitterbug
pop-r
and a weedless frog like a Harrison Hoge Superior
Here are my favorites:
Cultiva/Owner Tango Dancer Chrome - walking bait
Mister Twister Salad Spoon = soft plastic pond scum bait
Booyah Buzz Bait - Black skirt red blade
Megabass Type X Frog - Surface/subsurface bait - Tonomsa Color (looks like a bullfrog)
Floating worm wacky rigged - Usually a Pink or White 6 inch Rattlesnake Floater
Rebel Pop-R
Zara Spook
3/8oz buzzbait
Heddon Tiny Torpedo
Devil's Horse
Jitterbug
in that order
I am looking at the megabass Anthrax 100 to use for topwater. Anyone tried it & what were the reults?
I have a lot of success with floating Rogues,floating Rapalas,buzzbaits,Tiny Torpedos,and Devil's Horse.

JITTERBUG FOR SURE!!!! ive tried fishing topwater for a while now and never could get a hit. i just got a jitterbug and tied it on today and i had alot of hits and even hooked one but it was too small and the hook was too big so it came off easily.
