Jig on straight braid? 2024

fishing user avatarSkeet22 reply :

How many fish a jig on braid with no leader?

fishing user avatarCraiger12 reply :

I use braid for all my jig and soft plastics fishing and never use a leader.

fishing user avatarflippin and pitchin reply :

Depends on water clarity.  You can color the last 2 feet with a black felt pen too.  If you have vegetation you can away without a leader.

fishing user avatarSoFlaBassAddict reply :

I've done it. Love it.  Braid is stupidly sensitive. Makes fishing a jig a lot easier. Plus you can just slam home the hook.  There are times when I'll put on a leader though.  I'm honestly not really sure how much the line visibility actually matters.  Having the leader does give you an easier spot to break off should you get hung up in something though.

fishing user avatarVABassin'14 reply :

I do. I started using it because I wasn't getting a great hook sets on fish with jigs. I trimmed down the weed guard and switched to braid and haven't had any problems with getting a good hook set on fish with a jig since. I also can feel the bite much better with braid.

fishing user avatarLilJakeC1 reply :

If I am not fishing in clear water or around any rocks then I will use straight braid.

fishing user avatarHook Set reply :

In murky water and at night for me.

Tungsten jig with braid on a Cumara, insanely sensitive!

fishing user avatargobig reply :

I always use braid for jigs. If I feel its needed I will add a leader with an Alberto Knot.

fishing user avatarRed reply :

I do.  I mostly flip and pitch jigs and t-rigs, never a leader for me.

fishing user avatarEastTexasBassin reply :

Straight braid all the way, never a leader.  I don't care how clear the water gets.

fishing user avatarcasterus60 reply :

Except topwaters and deep cranks all my rigs are with  braid.I mostly fish in stained to 3-4' clarity waters.I've used leaders, but didn't caught more fish.Maybe in very clear water I will.Braid sensitivity is incredible. You can feel almost everything on the bottom.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

I still hate braid.

However, switching to braided line (PP 50/12) has improved

my jig fishing dramatically! Direct tie for me with jigs. Fluoro

leader, Alberto's knot for weighted soft plastics.

fishing user avatarSiebert Outdoors reply :

I do.  It is real nice in the thick weeds.  It will rip the jig right out of them.

fishing user avatarNice_Bass reply :

never, I hate braid.  However, I have started using it just not on any soft plastic or jig.

fishing user avatarDavid P reply :

It's not just about line visibility. If you're fishing rocks, lines like P-Line CXX are far more abrasion resistant then braid. If I'm fishing heavier cover, weeded areas, or stained water away from rocks, I'll go without a leader. If there's rocks, no matter how dirty or clear the water is, I'm using a leader.

I do.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Depends on the cover.  Mostly braid direct to bait.

fishing user avatarRevo_Carrot Stix reply :

The clearest of my waters around here is stained. I'm not a big fan of braid-flouro leaders with jigs just because (in my mind) it's another potential point of failure. I seldom fish a jig beyond flippin' or pitchin' into cover. I fish a lot of rocky shallow waters and soft plastics tend to not hang up as much.

fishing user avatarjignfule reply :

Love braid on my jig, but  also caught 2X 18'' + smallies on senko w/ 50# braid in clear water the other day. Love braid. :)

fishing user avatarbweave09 reply :

For those who fish rocks and need a leader, how long is your leader?

About as long as a rod length.  Roughly from the reel seat to the tip.

fishing user avatarHammer 4 reply :

If I do tie a leader on, it's usually 3 to 5' long.

fishing user avatarvon reply :

Straight braid only. I've had too many breaks at the leader knot.

I couldn't agree more.

I usually use a leader that starts about the length of the rod I am using. As I re-tie through out the day that leader shortens up. Tying the leader to the braid is far more time consuming. When your fishing against the clock every minute matters.

An Alberto knot tied properly retains 99.9% of the line strength and it slides through the guides like butter. You are far more inclined to loose a fish because of a nick or a bad spot in the line. I have fished this knot for quite some time with out one failure at the knot. I do not use florocarbon as a leader in this application. I use P-Line, only I use the CX in stead of the CXX as mentioned in a previous post. Its a co-polymer line with a florocarbon coating. It is the best line I have found that holds up to rocks.

fishing user avataradclem reply :

I fish my jigs either on braid no leader or on fluorocarbon.  I will use which ever one the situation calls for.

Later, :)

fishing user avatars13john reply :

straight braid only a leader when in rocks 12-15lb yo-zuri hybrid

fishing user avatarGorgebassman reply :

I flip and pitch with braid exclusively and never have used a leader.

fishing user avatarScorcher214 reply :

i dont really see the point of a leader. Your line is as strong as its weakest point. so having 50lb braid, with a 15lb mono/fluorocarbon leader defeats the purpose i think.

fishing user avatarPantera61 reply :

braid, no leader

fishing user avatarSkeet22 reply :

Looks like the majority prefer straight braid. Now I feel better About using my Buzz Frog rod which is spooled with braid as my jig rod as well.

Man,...all jigs straight to braid...Seems like the fish would just see that line and run?  Maybe I need to respool a reel and force myself to fish jigs straight from braid, and see the results.  Interesting....

Why would fish be afaird of line ?

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

The jig head and line are lost in bottom clutter.

I think the fish focus on the trailer. That's not

necessarily the case with soft plastics. I like a

leader on weighted presentations and copolymer

(Yo-Zuri Hybrid) or fluorocarbon with spinning

gear for weightless rigging.

I learned a lesson once fishing in clear water with 8# f/c for smallies. Out of curiosity I switched my 5''  Senko over to my baitcaster rig w/ 50# braid. The next two fish were the biggest of the day pushing 4#s each. I don't use leader anymore. :) unless I'm on rocks.

fishing user avatarMichBassMan reply :

Jigs and Frogs in thick cover or dirty water, direct to 50 lb power pro green. Get a lure retriever though, 50 lb p.pro can be tough to break when snagged.  T-Rig I use flouro.
