What Colors For Soft Plastics? 2024

fishing user avatarBigTerp reply :

Going to order some plastics from a local tackle maker and am wondering what colors I should be getting. These will be used primarily to fish for smallmouth in the upper Potomac river (shallow and rocky for the most part) and occassionally for chasing largemouth in various local lakes. I'm looking to get some soft jerk baits, craws for jig trailers and some tubes. Any specific colors you guys reccomend or have had luck with on these types of baits? Thanks!!!

fishing user avatarBuckMaxx reply :

I fish one color Watermelon seed... everything.

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

Watermelon ( you pick the flake color you like the most ) & Green Pumpkin will cover 80% of your needs, 90% of the time. For soft plastic jerkbaits ( flukes ) Pearl belly and whatever kind of flake color back will cover most situations.

fishing user avatarKritterGitter reply :

Watermelon, and red shad colors are all I use...

fishing user avatarGot1Fishing reply :

PB&J, Green Pumpkin, Watermelon Red Flake, and something with brown and orange

+1 on this... also watermelonchartreuse

fishing user avatarannexation reply :

Green Pumpkin and Black and you're good to go! Green Pumpkin for brighter days / clearer waters; black for any time else. I'm not afraid to try the full range of colors (some days it doesn't seem to matter what you throw at them), but those two seem to be the best all-purpose producers for me.

fishing user avatarBigTerp reply :

Thanks for the responses!! Just trying to see if there is anything that most seem to have success with. Seems to be a consensus on the green pumpkin and watermelon red.

fishing user avatarBigTerp reply :

What is pb&j by the way?

fishing user avatarThe Fisher reply :

Watermelon/red senkos, green pumpkin chigger craws, watermelon orange baby brush hogs, white flukes, rage tail lobster in Falcon Lake Craw color

fishing user avatarMCS reply :

Red, yellow, black.....white....GO TERPS

fishing user avatarTrippyJai reply :

Green Pumpkin if I had to choose only 1 colour. If I was able to get 3 choices, Green Pumpkin, Black/Blue Flake and Watermelon/Red Flake.

Now this is what I'm talking about!!!!!!!

fishing user avatarStingray23 reply :

Heres what I do for plastics. I buy natural colors like pearl white, watermelon, green pumpkin, black, smoke, clear. Then, I also get a few wild colors like chartruese and bubble gum. That should cover everything you'll need.

fishing user avatarRB 77 reply :

Top five in no particular order 1. Black 2. Watermelon 3. Pumpkin 4. Green Pumpkin and 5. Junebug. Choose different colored flakes as you desire. Day in day out these five colors have been the strongest for  me in all soft plastics including the styles that you mentioned.

fishing user avatarBigTerp reply :

Thanks again for all the replies!!

Seriously black is a great all around color, red bug and red shad, yellow worms are good for top water and white flukes and craws work well too.

fishing user avatarVzwire reply :

I've had success with all shades of blue.

fishing user avatarRangerphil reply :

A pink trickworm from zoom has been known for catching some smallmouth in the upper Potomac!

fishing user avatarToeshots reply :

I generally focus on dark colors (black/blue/purple) and natural colors (green pumpkin/brown). Most of my soft plastics variations on these two color categories.

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

K.I.S.S.   green pumpkin and black/blue for your worms, trailers, creature/craw baits, and white for a fluke, and you'll catch bass anywhere. Shiny metal flakes, and the rainbow of colors catch more fisherman than fish. For all we know, under water in might all look like one dull shade of grey to the fish.

fishing user avatarSherlock 60 reply :

Watermelon pepper, watermelon red flake, June bug and smoke pearl blue (a medium blue with a touch of a sheen to it).

fishing user avatarbackcast88 reply :

My go to color is watermelon.  Especially watermelon green brush hogs.

I always have pumpkinseed and chartreuse pepper or something with a chartreuse tail as a backup for those cloudy days when watermelon isn't the best choice.

fishing user avatarslonezp reply :

Any of the following: Watermelon, pb&j, brown and orange, black and blue. There are a million different shades of these colors. I wouldn't get caught up in the minor variances too much.

fishing user avatarMontanaro reply :

greens and browns

if you fish in mud, black

if you are feeling wild, a dark purple.

fishing user avatarMacP reply :

I fish Green Pumpkin, California 420, Watermelon Seed, June Bug, Red Bug, Black and Blue in worms and brush hogs.

Albino, Arkansas Shiner, Pearl Flash for Flukes.

Some companies like R.I. I use penetration and houdini.  I like some alabama craw colors.

Don't get too caught up on colors.

Green Pumpkin, Watermelon Seed, Black and Blue and Red Bug will cover your bases for worms/creatures.

Whites, Pearls, Browns will cover your flukes, swimmers.

fishing user avatarcbfishalot reply :

Green Pumpkin

Watermelon w/ Red Flake

Back and Blue

Only 3 Colors You Need!

Albino and pearl for flukes; Green Pumkin, black, watermelon for everything else is about all you need for the UP.

Fishing the West End quarry could get you arrested BTW, I know someone who was escorted out of there by the police.

Munkin - I haven't fished the Quarry in a few years. But when I did, I had written premission and a key to both gates. My in-laws lived right across from the block company for over 30 years, and helped keep an eye on things there, hence why we had permission and keys. To bad others had to ruin the fun. We've caught numerous 10+lb largemouth out of there, and I'm convinced the state record is in that water.

Well if you can get the keys I will go with you as I have saw some pics of fish caught there.

I cant tell you what colors to use cause I live in East Texas and I fish impoundments (reservoirs)- you'r fishing something I haven't so this is what I would recommend- do your homework and find what lives in the waters you fish.  turn over rocks for bugs, what color are the minnows, crawfish?  Blue gills?  Once you can figure out what lives in the waters with your prey then choose resemblances...  No sense in buying things that are useless.

fishing user avatarBigTerp reply :

Thanks, that makes sense.
