Hi all
Its going into mid-summer here now and we have been fortunate enough that most days have been cloudy and rainy, so the fishing has been ok.
Pretty soon the heat will be on with clear skies and temps in the 30's.
As you know the bite can get tough. On Sunday it was pretty steamy, water temps around 25c and after the morning bite died off, we were cruising some of the rocky banks and the finder picked up lots of fish at the 10m (30') range on the rocky ledges. All over the dam that depth seemed to hold fish. I was dragging a T-rigged liz and only manage one bite. My deep diver cranks would get nowhere close to that depth. Most of our fish where caught before 10am fishing the reed lined banks and water weed in approx 9' of water.
So the question is how would you entice these fish to bite? What would your 5 top Summer lures be? Scanning some of the articles it seems a jig is the lure of choice...
Pic is ls the largest I managed on Sunday, caught with a watermelon seed lizard.
Thanks guys
BM
My top 5 Summer Lures (in no particular order)
1) Square Bill Crankbait
2) Spinnerbait
3) Plastic Worm/Crawfish
4) Senko
5) Hollow Body Frog
This year it has been
Fluke
Jig and craw
Senko
Spro Frog
Baby brush hog.
Jigs, shakyheads, deep spinnerbaits, texas rigged worms, deep diving cranks. If i were you i would try a jig and if that doesnt work try fishing a shakyhead really slowly shaking it on the rocks.
Definitely get into drop shotting, if you locate fish on or near the bottom. They'll even go after it when suspended; I've actually seen (on the graph) suspended fish go down towards my drop shot before it hit the bottom.
You can also try floating a wacky rigged Senko under a slip bobber. Very deadly, especially if there's a light chop on the water. There is a good article, in the "pinned" section" of one of the forums here, depicting this technique. This works wonders when they are really finicky.
In no particular order - Drop shot/split shot. Shallow Shad Rap. Fluke with underspin. T-Rigged baby brush hog. Poppers.

This year was:
Senkos
Fluke
Bare Jigheads/soft plastics
Shallow cranks 0-5
Deep cranks 7-16
Frog, fluke, trick worm, rinse and repeat.

For me, this year, my most productive summer baits were: A - Jika rigged soft plastic ( mostly one brand or another of creature bait)
B - square bill crank ( primarily a Timber Tiger DC 8 or DC 4)
C - weightless senko - wacky rigged
D - deeper diving crank ( primarily as Timber Tiger DC13 or DC16, but I fished lots of different deep divers)
E - Bubba drop shot ( Berkley Chigger Craw was best bait with a Berkley Jerk Shad a strong second.
I spent this season learning soft baits:
1. Zoom U-Tale in gourd green, T-rigged worked best.
2. 5" Watermelon w/copper& orange w/red (say that 5x fast) Senko, mostly T-rigged, sometimes whacky.
3. 6" Berkley Gulp pumpkinseed night crawler, T-rigged, weighted & weightless.
4. Berkley 7" electric blue Powerbait, T-rigged, weighted & weightless.
5. 4" watermelon w/red & green flake Senko, yep, you guessed it, weighed & weightless.
It's snowing out now, so we'll see what I try in the Spring.
Merry Christmas everyone!
I did the best this year on:
1.Squarebill
2.Swim jig
3.Frog
4.Havoc Pit boss
5.Shakey Head
I had some good luck this last summer with a fat ika, besides that was learning drop-shotting and that's my new favorite! As I look out my window at almost 2 ft. of snow ........ it's also in the 30's here

All types of jigs? Swim jigs, football, flipping and pitching? I have never really fished jigs before, so as soon as ice is gone around here I am getting into it.

Here's a fish that liked the Fat Ika, too!

Yes.
1. FROG
2. FROG
3. FROG
4. Crank
5. U-vibe worm
I usually stop at 3... Frog frog frog all day!!
Jig
Frog
Trickworm
Crankbait
Senko
Not in any particular order. Senko probably would produce the most #'s with the Jig or Crankbait yeilding a bigger fish on average.

I throw one jig & one jig only!
Terry Oldham's Eye Max
In no order
T rig rage craw with 3/16 or 1/4 tungsten weight
Wacky rigged senko
Swim jig
Kvd 1.5 and 2.5
Black/black cavitron buzzbait at night
Thanks for the responses all!
So Jig takes it by a long shot. Square bill and wacky senko right up there too.
I rigged a blue/black jig up this morning and will use it on the weekend. I get the feeling that the fish will hang around the rocky drop-offs for quite some time yet. Especially in the heat of the day. I suppose a slow drag will be the best presentation? Is it better to drag it up the drop or let it fall down the drop?
Cheers!
Dennis
I see the favorite color for jigs is blue/black with similar color trailer. I recenty purchased 1/4oz Outkas Jig Bold Gill. What would be a good trailer and trailer color for this jig?
I read right after the spawn blue-gill color can be deadly, we have a lot of blue gill up here in WI.
Personally I'd be using a variant of green pumpkin or watermelon for a trailer. As for what, well your options are endless. Single or double tail grub. Part of a swim senko. Havoc subwoofer or a paddle tail swim bait. A craw style trailer. The list goes on and on.

Thanks for the help. Learning the swim jig should keep me busy this spring/summer.
It's a good bait to have in your arsenal.

I might try and put a trailer on it in okeechobee craw its a little different but something different can be good
1. White zoom fluke
2. Bluegill flash Keitech impact
3. Sexy shad SK spinnerbaits
4. 7" green pumpkin curly tail power bait worm
5. 1/2 oz pb&j SK football head jig with cinnamon trailer.
1 most fish, 5 least fish. All of which were my most productive tools.
10" ribbon tail worm, T-Rig
8" lizard, Carolina Rig if not too choked with weeds
Frog
Spinnerbait if its choppy on the water
Buzzbait in morning/evening
