I was in at a tackleshop in my area recently and was looking at some stuff by Keitech. The guy working told me that a few of their products had changed their formula which is a lot less durable now. He then went on to tell me that the old formula-based products(if you purchased them) were being sold for like, $40-50 a pack because they were so durable.
Has anybody seen/heard about this?
Changed when?
I only started using Keitech two years ago, but there was nothing about them that could ever be called durable.
On the other hand, I put up with the fragility because they have incredible slow-speed action (which is likely a result of the softness of the plastic.)
I'm pretty sure it changed within the last two months.
$40-50 a pack for products that are 2+ months old?!
Sounds like I've got about $2k worth of Keitechs sitting in my storage bin!!!!
I am an avid Keitech user. Have been for over 3 years now. If what they used in the past is called durable then I can be considered a supermodel.
In all seriousness ... I know for certain the the spiders which they reintroduced recently was produced with a whole new, more durable plastic. People complained about them because they don't work as well as the classics. Maybe that is what you are referring to??
I use soft plastics from a small manufacturer because they make the best tubes which are soft. I fish a lot of smallmouth and everyone uses a tube but the fish are conditioned to the point they spit them but the soft tubes they hold on. Another thing with softer plastic is it is more lively and you don't have to move it as fast to get the desired action, Keitech makes high end soft plastic just like Yamamoto, it is about catch fish, not how many you can catch on one bait.
let me talk to you about this timeshare that I was saving for someone special...

Possibly! They were small swimbaits, like...the size of a Mister Twister. The old formula used to let people catch as many fish as you could before you got snagged and lost it.
Apparently people are paying top dollar to get a hold of those. I have a picture of exactly what I'm talking about at home...but, I'm in class and can't get to them right now lol
The original spiders do go for top dollar on forums.
Matt
Well they did have a MSRP reduction back in July could that be due to a formula change???
If it were true, theyd be on ebay.
And they are not.
When I stopped in at Susquehanna Fishing Tackle, the guy told me about 'em because I was looking to pick up a second pack.
I'll give 'em a call tomorrow to double check.
I have some on order from TW. I also have dozens of packs on hand from years before. I will check to see if I can notice anything different like a softer or harder plastic.
I'll cut you guys a deal and sell some swing impacts for only 30 bucks a pack.

I just blew through $1,000 worth of swing impacts on A-rigs last week if this is true

I never picked up a Keitech or any other higher priced bait because I thought they would be more durable. I fish a lot of pressured water and you being from central PA probably do as well. If that is the case, then you want a bait that is going to have more life and feel more natural so softer helps, don't worry about durability. If Keitech changed their formula, I'd guess it is either a lateral change meaning they have almost the same texture and density and just tweaked it to save money or they made them even softer but my friend who is in the tackle business hasn't heard of any formula change, at least he hasn't said anything so I'll call today and find out for sure.
Not in any way trying to knock small mom and pop shops, but some of the stuff I hear in those local places is pretty outlandish. Had a guy in a local shop a year ago claim that keitech was coming out with a ten inch swing impact fat. Take what you hear with a grain of salt.
I just contacted keitech and their response was no, why would you ask?
I just started using keitech swing impacts, I backlashed on a cast and the paddle tail went flying off. Is this normal?

If you were using braid you'd be lucky if the whole thing didn't fly off.

Oh yeah.
The only change that took place to our knowledge was with the spider grub. It went from a durable pvc type plastic to regular pour plastic. This is much less durable. THe new ones however do catch em. http://sfttackle.com/plastic-soft-baits/keitech-little-spider.html

Maybe
Well I also just picked up some of these because of the overwhelming good things. I had only heard not durable but that they will tear and to just keep mend with you. I planned on trying these out Friday wish me luck

Good Luck and tie good knots
I only started early this year with them but they have set personal records for me on a number of lakes. Most fish in one day on 4 separate lakes and biggest fish on 3 lakes. They catch me bigger fish in general. Thats why I just bought 40 more packs.
Oh AND my PB back in june

I use a majority of the keitech products. Love everything except for their salty sticks or whatever they call their stick bait. It doesn't catch fish here. Beginning of the spring, the ez shiner on a yum money minnow keel weighted hook flat out killed the bass. Was going through several packs a day. I would say these baits are even more fragile then a senko. However, they need to be so that the tail action continues even with a slow retrieve.
Time to go into the garage and compare the keitehcs..will report back.
lol I dont know why I found this so funnyOn 12/3/2015 at 6:49 AM, Cmiller said:I just started using keitech swing impacts, I backlashed on a cast and the paddle tail went flying off. Is this normal?

Thanks for setting the record straight!
Tight lines,
Bob
In regards to the durability of the Fat Impacts, I've seen it swing both ways (pun intended). I've had baits last a fish or two, I've had other baits that have lasted a dozen+ bass/pike in one day. I like to use the screw lock swimbait hooks with these and usually it's just the nose area that gets tore up from the screw. If you fill that nose with crazy glue, you'd be surprised how much that glue will hold the bait together for you.
Kietech swimbaits have never been durable.

In their defense, A lot of BS gets spewed around in bait shops by fishermen

That was my point exactly.
If you wanna make Keitech swimbaits less durable rig them the way I do. A single octopus hook (hooked like a dropshot, thru the nose) with a small worm weight unpegged infront of it. I get maybe 5 or 6 casts out of it before it breaks and flies off the hook. But its a great way to good bites and gives the swimbait lots of action.
Except for the durability problem they are perfect. Now, if they could just use a harder, more durable compound in the nose...
...they'd lose a lot of money. People wouldn't have to reorder as often, plus production cost would go up.
