Does Anyone Still Have Faith In Spoons? 2024

fishing user avatarCatch and Grease reply :

I bought some Johnson spoons awhile back and started using them and yeah I caught fish and its fun and all but it seems like there is always something that produces better than a spoon on any day. I'm not going to go out and act like I've mastered spoons because that would be a lie but I still can catch fish with them. Does anyone still like to use spoons a lot?

fishing user avatarGrizzn N Bassin reply :

I fish daredevils, but i dont fish them that much.alot of people success with them in the winter jigging spoons but my knowledge only goes to the red and white daredevil in the summer. i catch a few fish here and there on it. i fish it bc spoons fish are fun but never my first choice. i throw it after everyhting else.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

Yelp! Caught 7 Monday on a Gold Johnson Minnow with a charteuse skirt  ;)

fishing user avatarriverat reply :

As I've posted many times, the Johnson Silver Minnow still produces for me.

fishing user avatarAlonerankin2 reply :

Sorta of..... I have several 2 oz for Kentucky lake

It's really aggravating. The lake eats spoons.

fishing user avatarroadwarrior reply :

The rocks love flutter spoons!

Dardevle five of diamonds. When you absolutely, positively have to catch every last Pike in the lake, accept no substitutes.

I also used to bust skunks with a 1/4 oz gold Kastmaster.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

My 1st bass lure was a #3 Hawaiian Wiggler back in '53, learn how to cast a baitcasting reel using this spoon.

There some good surface-subsurface weedless spoons besides the Johnson Silver Minnow; Persuader Bass spoons and the redfish Red Ripper spoon are 2 that I use in the spring through summer periods.

Structure spoons are good whenever bass are feeding on shad, flutter spoons when the shad or baitfish are larger size.

Weedless spoons are fished like weedless frogs, over the top of mates and let them swim in open water pockets or along weed lines.

fishing user avatarDarren. reply :

I haven't used a spoon except for cereal, and soup. Ok, once I did catch a rather nice pike on one. But that over 20years ago.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

A Hawaiian Wiggler is an in-line spinnerbait!

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

The #3 is a weedless spoon with a rubber skirt, look it up.

fishing user avatarPz3 reply :

I dont normally give away my secrets but. Spoon+uncle josh pork frog. Black/silver. Dont ask me why it works. Its a killer.

fishing user avatarmerc1997 reply :

Spoons are one of the fishing tools that you do not leave the house with.

fishing user avatarTyler j reply :

Big flutter for fishing tops of standing timber it really works during the summer that and a jerkbait

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

The vintage Arbogast Hawiian Wiggler #3 is a weedless spoon, looks like a Johnson Silver Minnow with a skirt.

fishing user avatarmerc1997 reply :

i did a search and tom is dead on. there is a #3 hawaiian wiggler that is just a weedless spoon with a rubber skirt. the 300 series is a spoon type body with a sputter blade in front.

tom, it amazes me how you remember the actual model numbers of all those old lures. i did go dig through my old stuff and found my old one with the spoon body and sputter blade.

It's easy to remember your first lure, rod/ reel comb, Thank you.

fishing user avatarBassguytom reply :

I use tungsten spoons when I see bass in deep water.

fishing user avataraavery2 reply :

Last year in one of the pits I fish the shad became very balled up and the bass were close behind, actually underneath.  The only bait that we could consistently catch fish with was a large kastmaster spoon.   A year ago we went to TX to fish Amistad, the wind got high so we went to the river (a little more protected) and proceeded to wear the white bass ( Sand Bass for you Okies) out with spoons.

fishing user avatarCatch and Grease reply :

I'm assuming you meant "don't leave the house without" haha I guess a lot of people do still love spoons! I like fishing them in winter deep maybe I just need to get better at it.

fishing user avatarbclark7b reply :

Bass no... I mean I could catch some but there is never a time where I feel I need to use a spoon. Too many other better options. Now if I wanna catch pike its a spoon!

fishing user avatarhooah212002 reply :

I use spoons for panfish, but have yet to catch bass with them. I have a couple spoons that are my second go to when my inline spinners aren't working.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

I wouldn't hit the lake without an assortment of jigging spoons in the boat, especially late fall through early spring and again during the heat of the summer. I like the white and silver War Eagles.

fishing user avatarbmac31 reply :

I'll throw the daredevil every once in awhile mostly outta habit from growing up. Still catches me fish. I do think there are better alternatives most of the time.

Ps. I've got a very old one that looks good on my key chain

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

I have a variety of spoon types, not too many days go by where I don't use one of them in saltwater.  For bass fishing you bet I use them, my 2 favorites are a gold Redfish key spoon and a Clark spoon, both are saltwater spoons and I only use them in freshwater.

fishing user avatarNice_Bass reply :

Hopkins shorty tied on year round.

fishing user avatareinscodek reply :

Spoons are so old school.. the only time I would consider it is jiggin deep and I hate fishin deep

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

Old school huh, do you consider a jig old school?  Wouldn't surprise me if a jig may be one of the first artificial lures ever used.  There are many types of spoons, that many jigs plus a whole lot more.  Another thing that wouldn't surprise me, both spoons and jigs account for more fish (all species) caught than all other lures combined.

fishing user avatarRatherbfishing reply :

If/when I choose to troll, I will either use a crankbait or a spoon.  The little cleo is one of my favorites.  Sometimes I'll fish a johnson silver minnow but conditions rarely seem right when or where I'm fishing.

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

I used to love Mepps syclops a good productive spoon, thought it turned over too much causing a lot of line twist.  I prefer spoons that wobble back and forth, I keep a good supply of Krocodiles on hand.  I'm sure lots of people get emails from a site with 99 cent sales, that site has Krocs every now and then for 1.99, that's when I stock up.

fishing user avatartcbass reply :

This is a Heddon Moss Boss. A great topwater bass lure. I've caught a few lm's on this. It doesn't catch all of the fish, but it has accounted for some of my biggest fish. I use it on pads and weeds and catch fish in the weeds with it like a frog and a lot of times when it comes off the pads into the open water is when fish crush it.

fishing user avatarCrestliner2008 reply :

I use to troll the musky size Johnson spoon for big pike. Caught some big catfish on that spoon as well. Only thing is the catfish destroy the weed guard. Maybe not a bad thing as I don't believe it's much of a guard anyway. Today I use a 5/8 oz. Tony spoon for casting and jigging back to the boat for deep water smallies. But only if I'm fishing a spot with no weeds.

fishing user avatarmerc1997 reply :

Spoons are a great fishing tool. one that can be fished any depth. very simple, but very effective. we have on a few occasions had the opportunity

on table rock to utilize spoons such as the johnson silver minnow in flooded brush and vegetation. i can not think of anytime of the year that i do not

have some type of spoon tied on a rod.
