Your Thoughts On Fishing Scents? Effective Or Myth? 2024

fishing user avatarGrizzn N Bassin reply :

Does anybody know some good fishing scents to put on soft plastics or baits? Ive been thinking about trying it i just havent gotten around to it.

fishing user avatarww2farmer reply :

I am a big fan of Mega Strike. Does it work? I think so. Not so much to attract bites, but to mask any offensive odors that might repell bites, and to get fish that do bite to hold the bait longer......that really helps on those days when they are biting lite, and you don't feel the text book "thump" or your line dosen't move off in another direction. I can't tell you how many times in just the last 2-3 weeks I have not "felt" anything. Just take the slack out of my line and it feels "heavy", I am fully convinced those fish might not have made it to the boat had I not been using Mega Strike.

fishing user avatarrockchalk06 reply :

Thats a question that could be debated for weeks. I use it on everything. Cant tell it if work or not, but does make me feel better that I can mask my scent though

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

If the soft plastic has a built in scent like Berkley Power or Gulp don't add to it. If the soft plastic doesn't have scent added, then add a scent known to work; Bang, Hot Sauce or Mega Strike, pure anise oil or garlic are all good.

Trader Joes sells frozen freeze garlic in the frozen veggie section in little squares 1 sqaure is perfect for a bag of worms.

fishing user avatarJig Meister reply :

I never used to use it until this year. Now it seems to work well. I will have days where I wont get a hit, forgot that I have it, spray it on my jig's and bam, get a few fish.

So IDK, if you usually have strong odors on your hands or person, like tobacco, coffee, cologne etc. I would use it.

I have been using BANG Garlic, and will use the Crawdad next.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

They both mask any negative sues you might leave on the bait, and I think they get the bass to hold the bait longer. They are just one more small edge you can get on the fish.

fishing user avatardeep reply :

Pro-cure gel. It lasts for a long time. For masking my own scent, I have some cheap stuff from Walmart.

fishing user avatarGrizzn N Bassin reply :

thanks for all of this suggestions ive seen it on the rack but never pick it up im deff going to try some homemade recipes and ill get a bottle of im going t pick up at bottle today and see how i do

fishing user avatar.Paxamus. reply :

I always use scents. Anything to help, over the years I have tried all kinds, used to only use BANG, then went to powerbait stuff, tried JJs with good results but too messy for me. Plus almost got kicked out of my own house for using it in the basement. No I use Megastrike, smells good to me, fish seem to hold on longer as well

fishing user avatarunionman reply :

Brand or scent DOES NOT MATTER. As long as you remove unatural scents your good. I get the cheapest garlic scent I can find. Works like a charm. I use it on any type of lure/bait you can think of.

fishing user avatarLgMouthGambler reply :

Just picked up some YUM Garlic/Ail scent from Dicks today. This stuff smells just like what is on the Gambler baits. If the bass eat up the Gambler baits, then I hope they do the same to my other baits.

fishing user avatarOkobojiEagle reply :

I believe scented baits will improve catch rates for bluegill, walleye, catfish and trout, but my bass fishing hasn't increased catch rates with scented baits.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

Why blue gill and not bass? Both are sunfish.

fishing user avatarWRB reply :

Be carefully not to mix different scents or add scent too far ahead of time; use as needed on soft plastics. Natural fresh frozen garlic clove is about the size of a sugar cube and 1 cube in a zip lock bag works great.

Off the self scents; a small amount applied to the worm front end is all you should need.

fishing user avatarGrizzn N Bassin reply :

im going to get a garlic scent and and maybe some jj but some one said it was to messy??

fishing user avatarGrizzn N Bassin reply :

im going to get some garlic bc that seems to be the scent of choice for a few ppl and ill also get some mega strike or somehting along those lines

fishing user avatarEastTexasBassin reply :

JJ's magic is my favorite. When I run out, I can tell the difference. Megastrike is awesome on swimbaits and frogs because it's also a lubricant

fishing user avatarnew2BC4bass reply :

Met Tom D's wife. She carries a plastic bag with ground coffee in it. Uses it whenever she gets into a bunch of crappies. I believe she said she dips her jigs in there before casting...fish on almost every cast while they are in the area. I see professionals spraying a scent on there lures before casting. I don't know if they are using it as an attractant, to mask their scent, or both. It is something I would like to try.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

1. MegaStrike

2. JJs Magic

3. Carolina Lunker Sauce

4. Jack's Juice

5. Gulp!

6. Anything you want!!!

The best scent consists of blending live Nightcrawlers into a paste and soaking your plastics in the goop.

You can now purchase blended Nightcrawlers or worms ready to go.

You also need to purchase Dr. Keith Jones' book, Knowing Bass - The Secrets to Catching More Fish. It is expensive but it is the guide on the bass' senses and what to do to catch more of them.

Remember, NOTHING LEAVES THE BOAT WITHOUT SCENT!!!!

Good luck.

X2.

JJs is rich in garlic scent.

I use garlic most of the time.

Can it hurt? Nope.

Can it improve the time the bass hold the bait in their mouths? Yep.

fishing user avatarDeadeye-1 reply :

I use two products.

One is called Kicking Bass, has a strong Galic smell and is made from/with natural fish oils. WARNING: Stuff sticks to everything and you will smell it for days if you get it on your clothes and such. I pour a small ammount into each bag of plastics as soon as I open them and allow it to absorb deeply into the plastic. It is availble as BPS.

Second is from Berkley and simply called Bass Attractant. You can find it at BPS and Wal Mart. I squeeze a little onto the worm every so often. First time I used it I caught 12 bass. Used it while fishing with a friend, who was using the exact same bait as I was, and I had 7 in the boat before he even had a hit.

I am convinced that both of these products have improved my catch ratio.

fishing user avatarA-Rob reply :

I don't add scent to much anymore

but if the plastic has some built in scent I won't complain!

fishing user avatartrupp30 reply :

I like to use Smelly Jelly in both Crawfish or Shad, depending on the soft plastic I am using. I am like many others who have responed in saying; I don't think it will attarct more fish, but when they bite I believe they do tend to hold on longer.

John... I accept the sensory similarities between a bluegill and bass, however, I've taken many, many more bluegill under a bobber allowing the gill to sample my bait than chasing down a swimming offering. On the other hand I've brought more smallmouth and largemouth to hand offering a bait with more movement than would allow for much "tasting" before a whole hearted commitment to consume. Put differently... I believe a bass reacts to profile and motion (visual cues) more strongly than taste.

I wish in Gene's video he threw the bait with no JJ's first. I would imagine he still would have gotten bit just as well.

Watch the 2nd video - he did exactly that with a 10" worm.

Thanks for that explanation. I wonder too, if the feeding behavior is centered around mouth size. Smallmouth will nip and peck, too. And letting them "play" with the bait a little longer often is the difference in getting hooked up. This is primarily for deep drops in 20+ FOW. Even deep caught largemouth seem to just suck the bait in.

JJ's on a frog or toad? Maybe to add color to a toad, but for frogs, I prefer to lube them up with Megastrike. I think it helps the hollow frog body rotate on the hook easier for a better hookup, and the fish definitely hold it longer.

fishing user avatarKingMidas reply :

I use Bang in the garlic scent. I use it by spraying a bit into the bag with the soft plastics and then on individual baits once I have it rigged up. I don't buy the idea that it actually attracts fish. I use it to mask the fact that I touched the bait and I also believe that fish hold on longer because of the scent. I had a ten inch LMB completely swallow an 8 inch power worm my first day using Bang and since then im not really confident without it.

I use the aerosol version of the scent... The regular spritzer bottle leaks if it tips over which leads to a smelly car/anything it touches

fishing user avatarGrizzn N Bassin reply :

yeah i need something to lube up my frog ive notice my hook up ratio isnt that great on the frogs.
