How many here have the first bait with which you caught your first largemouth?
I was given a crankbait called and Angel Eye, brand unknown, and the first day out with that bait I caught 7 largemouth. This was back in 1980. If you'll notice It's a squarebill. All 7 came from less than four feet of water. It's the bait In the lower right hand corner.
Johnson Beetle Spin... Still in my box.
I do, actually I still fish with it ( maybe I shouldn´t for sentimental purposes ), it´s a now very old Rapala Original Floating Minnow size 7 black back silver foil, man I´ve changed the hooks on that bait maybe 4 or 5 times, I have clear coated it twice because it was all scratched and beat up and still catches fish. I´ve thought about honorably discharge it but everytime I´m about to do it I take it out of the box, stare at it and I swear it talks to me sayin´ : lemme ketch some more fish before I go !
Raul, I threw that bait throughout the 90's and one day as I was cleaning out my box It hit me that It was the first bait I caught a bass on and the rest Is history. It hangs In my fishing closet with the other three baits In that picture. The Lazy Ike, the sinking Ike, and the baby bass(first balsa bait) bought In 1981. The Angel Eye and two Ike baits were given to me the same day by the same guy. I owe him so much as he Introduced me to bass fishing, taught me a ton, and was Incredibly patient about me getting hung up a lot. lol
I can't even remember. Maybe a trap or a tube?
Yep - still got it, though I don't use it any more. Doubt it was the first bass I ever caught, since I fished farm ponds and pits a lot, but it was the first artificial lure I purchased and caught a bass on from a large reservoir that I intentionally went to bass fish. Young enough that I still had to ride my bike to the lake to fish since I couldn't drive, so that would put it about 1980. I always remember thinking if only the pros I read about in the magazines would come to my lake and fish, they'd see the stuff they talk about doesn't work - then I caught a bass on this Mann's Hackleback Craw, and it all went downhill from there - LOL.

I've still got some Abu spinners from the 60's that caught a bunch of smallies. Probably not my first bass, but these lures are 50 years old.
Nope, long gone.
I remember it being a red and white spoon I threw in the south Louisiana marsh.
The bass was a dink, but it was my first bass caught on an artificial lure.
Had been using minnows and worms until that time.
Red Cotton Cordell Super Spot. Cast it one day and it just flew off my line into the water. My knot tying abilities have improved since .
H & H Spinner!
Alligator got it
Not sure what lure it was. Maybe a buzz bait or a worm. I was likely 4-5 years old so too long ago to remember.
Still have the first worm I caught a fish on…
If we are talking about lure probably some sort of plastic or spinnerbait. My first bass was probably caught on a bobber and worm.

First bass was on a bobber and night crawler. My first after I started using artificial lures was on a black and blue jig and yes, I still have it. Only been 5 years though so it's easy to keep track.

I hope it was plastic.
I caught my first on a Heddon Crazy Crawler many moons ago...don't have the lure, but a great memory instead.
senko... long gone
Size 7 Original Floater Silver/Black.
Staring at it right now...
Alex Langer's Flying Fish Lures.
It was a long time ago, but I'm pretty sure I caught my first largemouth on one of those early, pre-rigged rubber worms. It was orange, rigged with two or three weedless hooks, and had a couple of beads and a small propeller on the front. I was about nine or ten at the time and that lure is long gone!
I remember being very surprised when the fish hit it because, up until then, the only times I had tried using a rubber worm, I had threaded a small piece of one onto a size 2 Eagle Claw snelled hook and dead-sticked it, just like I did with real worms. Darn things didn't work well at all! :-)
Tight lines,
Bob
My first bass was caught on a SK Bitsy Bug, I can't remember the "official color" but it was a brownish color. I learned how to do the presentation through a lot of research on youtube, online boards..etc. It was the best feeling ever because even the standard live bait fishing I did prior, I couldn't catch many bass. It was the day it all came together and figured out that I love bass fishing. I don't have that lure any longer though.

I always thought if I would just fish that worm I would probably catch a bunch of fish.
I caught my first bass on a night crawler. I guess you could say, it is long gone.....
Mine was also a #7 Original Floating Rapala. I lost it the same year (1964) to a nice walleye. That was the same year I got hooked on artificial baits and that, a Lazy Ike, a Daredevil, and a Mepp's spinner became mainstays in my tacklebox.
I figure my first bass was on the old hook and worm????
My first bass on a lure had to be a rooster tail in either yellow or black. We would go down to the creek and throw these all day. They catch anything that swims.
Lost it years ago. A orange Rooster Tail. I put it my pocket one day when I was about ten y/o. I had to cut it out with scissors which left a hole in my shorts pocket. I forgot about the hole and put a $10 bill in the pocket to ride rides at the fair. Needless to say, I lost the $10. Lures have been costing me money every since, lol. I think the Rooster Tail ended up in my pond.
I caught my first bass slow rolling a Strike King 38 special through lily pads in a farm pond. Blue and yellow skirt with white blades that had silver flake on them. I still have the bait. The skirt band has since rotted. I keep it in a zip lock bag in my man cave.
If I still had the lure that caught my first bass, it would be about 65 years old today
It was called a "Creek Chub Injured Minnow", it's now a collector's item, but was similar to today's Devils Horse (propbait)
Back then, those who were fortunate enough to own a boat usually owned a rowboat complete with oarlocks and oars.
When we stopped to fish, the oars would be sitting in the water on both sides of the boat. Soon after catching my first bass,
I whacked one of the oars on my backcast, which busted the Injured Minnow in half (it went from injured to dead).
This was around 1950, a time when plastic plugs were slowly replacing wooden plugs, but the first plastic plugs
were from hunger. Many of the vintage plastics had a weak seam joining two halves (not along the length, but thru the center).
My Creek Chub plug broke in two halves, the fore spinner attached to one half, the aft spinner attached to the other.

Hahahahaha!!! It sure was! It was one of those really cheap plastics that come in the little spincast combos. The worm is so stiff that I'm surprised it even caught a fish!
I'm fairly confident it was a beetle spin and it's long gone
Live cricket.
Lost that bait long time ago, but I have another one just like it.
I'm almost certain my first bass was caught on a twin tail Yamamoto hula grub t-rigged with a very small bullet weight. My dad used to fish the James with his brother all the time and once I was big enough to go (probably 6 yrs old) I would go with them. We slayed the smallies on those hula grubs!
Original Marabou Road Runner in chartreuse
I dont remember the first bass I ever caught , but it was probably caught on a white marabou jig . I caught lots of fish on those jigs when I was a kid back in the 60's
That's pretty cool with it being that old! I don't have my first bait but I do have the bait my dad caught his 15.2 out of the back of my boat on! that was cool!

Did I miss something?
1/4 oz. SK Bitsy Bug, blue/black with a 3" Powerbait grub. The fish was roughly the same size and weight. Lost it later that same trip.
But I do have my boys' first-bass lures tucked away.

Same here except mine undoubtedly went to the great tacklebox in the sky.
First largemouth I remember catching was on a live crappie minnow...so no I don't still have that one.hahaha.the first one I remember catching on an artificial lure was on a 6 in. luck"e"strike curly tail worm in electric grape.i think you can still get them at wall mart...
first bass was on lite live frogs the first lure was a 3 inch berkley pearl white swimbait
My first bass came on a baby bass Strike King Bitsy Minnow... still have it, although it took 5 guys, an oar, and a paddle boat for me to get it back from a tree once.
Rapala Orig Jointed
Still have it.
No idea what I caught my first one on. I was too young
I dont remember it but I have pics and stories. I dont still have that live bluegill My first artificial ever caught on I still have it. I have several lures with memories that I have "retired".
Crème Midget crawler....spybaiting in the early 80's.
The first bass I caught on a lure was about 2lbs and I caught it on a mepps inline spinner with a minnow body. I remember it like it was yesterday
.... my brother and I were wading through a forest pond and ahead of us was one lone stick, just out in the middle of nothing. I cast to it and about a foot away from it I hooked up.
It was all downhill from there!
I'm thinking this was the mid 80s. ... so no, I do not still have that lure. I'm sure I threw it until I hung it up somewhere and lost it.
My first artificial was a chrome black-back Rat-L-Trap. There are a million of them so I wasn't particularly attached to it. I do however keep a good stock of them in my tackle box.
