I was going through some posts this morning while sitting at my desk, bored at work, wanting to be on the lake and realized that you guys talk about catching fish on lures that I never use, even if I have them in my tackle box! I have several topwater, cranks, lipless cranks, senko's, huge variety of worms, lizards, 10'' anacondas, etc that never get used.
How much tackle do you have that you don't ever use? Why don't you use it?
My excuse? I have proven lures and its a confidence thing. I really want to go out and use some senko's and other things but cant make myself commit. How about you?
I dont use spinnerbaits much any more even for a search bait i find myself using rattle traps and then i use my plastics i have 75 or so spinnerbaits at the ready that aint seen water all year
Large collection of spinnerbaits, only two have been used.
Same story with lucky Craft Pointers and they are my favorite
lures!
Fished a Rogue last weekend for the first time in several years.
A variety of lipless brands and colors, but the Xr50 Blue Chrome/
Orange is the one that gets used.
Don't remember the last time I fished a Spook.
At least twenty pounds of soft plastics, but when I should be fishing
them I end up throwing a jig.
75%, maybe 95% of my stuff doesn't get fished, but it's ready!

RW admit it u use the jig most cause of that sweeet STX
Spinner baits, it's like throwing a hardware store around all day
Rattle traps.I got about a thousand of them. They just come in so many cool colors but really only need maybe half dozen in various sizes if that.
But mostly the stuff I don't use is because I am not fishing the right kind of water or situations but its ready when I need it.
X3 on spinnerbaits.
I know this may sound stupid but I rarely use crankbaits nowadays. I'm mostly using soft plastics and swimbaits.
Topwater baits.... I never seem to have much luck with them
have a good size collection of spinners, buzzbaits, poppers, rattle traps, but only fish with soft plastics (worms, flukes, grubs and craws) and one Bomber Model A, one specific popper. the rest just sit there ready to be used but not by my friends that get hung up all the time. rather spend money and have it sit there than get hung in a tree or and underlying log >
i do most (90%) of my fishing from the bank since i don't own a boat. and even when i fish in a tourney with my club as a co-angler, i realized i rarely/barely use a crankbait. and i own a whole assortment cause of the Bait Monkey....
but after this weekends tourney i swore i would not buy anymore cranks....
i fish plastics 75%, buzzbaits and other topwater as well as spinners.....
so... for me...... i don't use cranks...
Crankbaits. I have a bunch of them, I keep trying new ones but I just can't catch anything but itty bitty dinks on them.
I mostly use plastics and jigs- sometimes spinnerbaits, frogs, and swimbaits.
now the ? is...lets add up the amount of money we could have all saved ;D
From more than 800 cranks I have I say that I fish with 50 in the best case.
From more than 200 spinnerbaits I fish with 10
From maybe a good couple thousand senkos I 've fished with maybe 3 packs.
And the list may go on.
But better having and not needing than needing and not having.

Let's face it: Lures are not all about "fishing", we're "collectors".

He who has the most toyz when dies wins !
and crank with a bill. I have box full of them that I always have in the boat but never seem to use.
I end up fishing spinnerbaits or lipless cranks when I'm reyling on a reaction strike
I asked this same question on another forum. I have 4 different lures that I look back and wonder why I bought them.
River2Sea Standin' Yabbie
Zara Spook-2 of them
SPRO Bronzeye frog-2 of them
YUM CrawBug
I never use these things. Maybe its confidence in the RageTail Shad or my jigs and tubes. I dont know. But all that money spent could have bought me a swimbait or two from Matt. :'(

im no pro bass fisherman. but im the same way but i find myself fishing senkos and other rubbers cause i know i can catch fish on them. im trying to use jigs and other similar lures now so ill JUST go out with one tied on the line and maybe another one or 2 in pocket so im forced to fish with it, practice and hope to catch with it
I feel the same way... I have a lot of lures I don't even use because I rarely fish in a different lake or pond. The lures that worked are the lures I use over and over again. Haven't ever tied on a spinnerbait except once or twice and caught nothing on it.
Senkos...believe it or not. I get a pack or two every year....
I'm trying,but i always get skunked when i fish just senkos.I don't know what's wrong with me......

You aren't alone. We ought form a support group for unsuccessful Senko fishermen.
90% of my tackle NEVER gets used, rods, reels, lures etc! I rarely go to lakes that require using anything but a flippin' stick. Rage Shads in the a.m. and flippin' baits after that! I have shallow/deep cranks, spinnerbaits, swimbaits, topwater lures, etc, etc, etc. Most of it is brand new and waiting its turn in the water!
spooks for me and beaver style baits. but anyone that wants to unload some lures send them this wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy . and raul put me in your will ;D
t
Somebody once told me that fishing and bassboats are like throwing money at a hole in the water.........
But, its SSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUNNNNNN!!!!!!
Its my drug of choice
I think what this comes down to is a matter of evolving our fishing preferences and techniques, to suit our style of fishing and the waters we frequent most often.
For the past 1/2 doz. years now, I've been focusing on catching larger smallmouth bass on off-shore structures, with drop shotting, tubes, Senkos and topwaters as my main arsenal. I have tons of spinnerbaits, crankbaits, jigs and what-all, that I've bought over the years. But I only use 4 rods and a small percentage of the tackle I own.
I still enjoy trying new lures and techiques; but I sure do love catching a 4 lb. smallies on a drop shot!
Rage Tail baits. ;D Don't shoot!! I am just kidding. I would have to live to be 500 and fish every day to use everything I have. Can't help it, I really believe I will use them someday.
I think all you guys need to have a garage sale, and make sure to PM me the addresses:P
I try hard to use most of my stuff, or at least switch things up and try something new on each trip but plastics really seem to work the best for me, and I'm more confident throwing them because they don't cost me 5 or 6 bucks each. And I'm sure that has alot to do with my success rate.
Yesterday I tried my Storm Chug Bug (which I love) and as loud as that little sucker is, you'd think it'd work great, but I've only had one blowup on it ever. And then out in the deeper water, I threw on a steel leader and a deep running Rapala crank but didn't get anything except a little more practice with my baitcaster. I have cranks that I'm SURE are gonna catch me a nice fish someday, but for now, plastic is where it's at.

My wife had a garage sale a couple months back and i made almost $200 on just spare lures! I still have a room full of gear that i don't use though, LOL!!!! ;D
I have a tub full of probably 100 different packs of lizards, and I haven't thrown a lizard in probably 2 years :-/
I never use those fancy modern swimbaits. I also never use buzzbaits. I hate them.
I don't have that many lures ect..Most of the time, I'll throw everything in my tacklebag..My twintail hula grubs get thrown the least.
Im having a tailgate sale this weekend im selling LOTS of plastics and spinnerbaits. I have no use for um take up space. Im more a abu garcia collector.some things im selling have been with me 15 yrs weird thing is i have 400+ crankbaits that i never use but seem to not want to sell um. BTW Dave ill be at the market
the only one's i consistantly dont use would be rattle traps......
never use'em, i kinda just dont like em... even though i own about a dozen of the darn things......
heck i even toss beetle spins alot, and believe it or not... have caught some noteworthy bass on them!

Raul:
GOOD POINT!
Couldn't have said it better !

i've got several large swimbaits that i very rarely throw because they are just too much work to fish with. but i try to use most all my other stuff. i prettymuch junk fish every time i go out, unless i'm sure i know exactly what the big girls are chewing. i start with several different types of topwaters until the sun is too bright and then i start trying to find the depth their at with a rattletrap or shallow running crank. and i just work deeper and deeper until i find um!
I've got a ton of lures that haven't been used in years. I now carry one utility tray that has about 30 hardbaits in it, and a soft bag with a dozen or so bags of soft plastics in it. If I loose or damage a lure, I go to the reserves. I'm catching as many fish as ever.
QuoteI think all you guys need to have a garage sale

There should be another group: group of fishermen who don 't fish senkos cuz ........ I don 't get what 's all the fuzz about :-?.
I don 't catch more fish with senkos than what I catch with other baits.

Now, how would you know that, Raul? You rarely (never) fish them!
The key to both Senkos and Fat Ika is fishing them in relatively
shallow water. That means 12' or less for me. Most guys fish shallow,
so the Senko is their go-to bait. If there is a bass in the zip code, there
is a good chance she will strike this lure.
Surprisingly, I'm kinda off the bandwagon. This has nothing to do with
the effectiveness of the Senko or Fat Ika, I have just starting fishing other
lures more often. However, for everyone that's having a hard time, I still
recommend these two baits over all others.
8-)
haha I guess I have to join the crowd that doesn't get into senkos much.

Definitely put me down for spinnerbaits. I use them the "proper way" and time of year and size and color and even blade style depending on conditions - still nothing. What a waste of my time. Bass DO NOT come looking for these things. NEVER HAD A NIP on one in 30 years of fishing. Same goes for buzzbaits. Fished them last night at sundown at a spot where I have been SLAYING bass for the last 8 weeks... nothing - not even a swirl.
Senkos and topwaters (spook type baits) are my 2 go-to baits. I ALWAYS START topwater and shallow and work down from there. If walk-the-dog style baits aren't doing it. I go to Senko style baits and catch bass by that point - never had a need to go down to crankbaits - although I have some beauties ready for any depth.
I'm getting ready to do a tackle purge myself. Way too much stuff I never use that just uses up space.
Jigs. I fish light tackle mosly, I don't have a use for them.
Crankbaits. I never really used them much. I'll hold on to the ones I have for the occasional deep sand pit.
Spinnerbaits. I've caught fish on these, it's just not something I feel I must have.
If I had the discipline, I could get by with 7" worms, 5" Tiki Sticks, 3/0 Tru Turn hooks, a few topwaters and 1/8 oz. ballhead jigs with some 1.5" to 3" grubs. I could fit it all in my pockets.
Yeah, just keep telling yourself that............. :
Frogs and buzzbaits.
I have lots of lures I don't use a whole lot, not because they don't work but because I use what I know works and it usually works well.
"better having and not needing than needing and not having" MAN! I like that! I don't feel nearly so bad about all those lures I have that have never seen water :-[...
skillet
i rarely use my extremely small collection of lipped cranks, also i barely use lizards. :-/
QuoteJigs. I fish light tackle mosly, I don't have a use for them.
light jigs are a blast! try some 1/8-1/4oz bitsy bugs
my crankbaits dont see much of the water. pretty much any lure with more than one hook. but they sure are purdy to look at.
spinnerbaits
