Saw the other thread, and figured a more positive one was in order. I personally tried a ton of new gear this year and have settled on a few things that have a definite place in my tackle box moving forward. I've gotten way WAY into fishing heavy cover. Pads, laydown, submerged structure, weed beds and channels, you name it... I barely fished open, rocky water or even anything 20+ all year. It was a big "focus on the structure and heavy cover" year for me, and almost all of my new favorites are snagless/weedless in some way or another.
My favorite finds of this year have got to be thus:
Northland jawbreakers
Deps slither Ks
Evergreen kicker frogs
1/4oz Owner flashy swimmers w/ 5.5" Bento swims
I'm sure I'll think of more but that's probably a decent start. What did you try this year that was a total WIN??
This year was the year of the fluke for me. I had tried and tried these guys for a couple years, and saw so many people having stories of success. Then I went out with a guy who used them, saw how he worked them, bought some SK Swim'n Caffeine Shad's and lit them up ever since. They're one of my confidence lures, especially rigged weightless, ran just below the surface.
bomber crankbaits, buzzbaits and spinnerbaits, tru-toungsten finesse worms, rapala and rebel jerkbaits.
Pit Boss! The thing really is the boss. Worked for me from spring to fall, mostly texas rigged but sometimes weightless. Fantastic bait, especially for the price!
Jerkbaits - never used them a ton in the past, but they were a big producer this year for me (BX Minnow, Husky Jerks, Flap Shad, Pointers)
Megabass Pop X and Pop Max - I've used tons of poppers in the past, but I spent the extra $$$ and got one of each of these and they produced very well
Any square bill crankbaits.... I need to force myself more next year.
#1 Rage Tail Structure Bug
#2 MegaStrike MegaTube Craw
#3 Chatterbait/ Rage Bug trailer
Not sure how many you want but these would be the tops:
Extreme Shaky head + Rage Menace
Dredge Jig 1/2 brush Black blue +Rage Bluebug trailer
Pointer 78 AM Shad
Black/Chart SOS squarebill
Keitech swing impact & impact fat on a chatterbait.
Finesse worm fishing/light tackle fishing with a baitcaster - got the correct gear for it.
Snag proof kicker frog
Overall this has been the year of jigs for me...Im officially addicted.
My best producer is the 1/4oz Mata Dredge Brush jig in Junebug/black rubber skirt with paca craw in blue sapphire.
2nd bait would be the scatter raps in baby bass and smash colors ...Ive seen many threads with dislike of this bait but it has produced extremely well for me this year.
lake fork magic popper... don't know what they do that differs from other poppers but it flat out catches fish. a bit pricey, but man it just works.
aside from that, i just say jigs. i just fished them more this year and picked up even more confidence in them.

Glad they worked for someone. I'm sure they catch fish, and I'm sure I need to throw them more to give them a chance, but the DT's just work so darn well.

Lol truth be told Ive never fished DT's..... So it may be that Im missing out? As far as the ScatterRaps go I just bang them through cover and once on the other side I just pause them, they have a slow float rate so I think it helps when getting bit...
A Booyah Pad Crasher turned my bass season into one worth remembering. Can't get enough of top water frogging and have had blow ups on the Booyahs, Koppers Live Targets, and River2Sea Bully Wa.
Zoom Super Fluke Pearl on a Scrounger Head
I have only been fishing for 4 months now, but for me it was a Cavitron Buzzbait, and chatterbaits. Beyond these two lure types the only other thing that has worked for me is Senkos and a couple other random soft plastics. I am trying to get into spinnerbaits but so far they just haven't produced for me yet.
A little off topic but my goal for this year though was really to just catch a few fish and get comfortable with different types of tackle and how they work. For the most part I achieved that goal. My goal for next year is to gain proficiency with the following lures:
1. Spinnerbait
2. Jigs
3. Rattle Trap style cranks
4. Soft Body Swimbaits
None of those have anything to do with the types of areas I fish as much as those are the types of lures that "speak" to me and the ones I want to learn. Of course this might explain why I haven't had much luck with them yet as well.
When your in wind think spinnerbait.

True story
I fish clear water for smallmouth and I was happily surprised at the number and size of the smallies that the Duo Realis Spin Bait 80 produced.

This was my first year fishing by kayak, so I fished mostly soft baits until ,june then tried crankbaits and chatter baits. Can't say a killed it with either, but the biggest bass I caught this year was on a chatter bait. I caught the 2nd rainbow trout in my life on a chrome Rapala deep diving minnow.
Zoom horny toad and swimming fluke, Yamamoto kreature and d-shad, and spro little John.
Bass Assassin's Bang Series Tapout Worm 7.5"
Enhanced with liquid salt & infused with Bang Scent Formula
Basically a fat Trick Worm.
Roboworms. I bought a pack last winter and tried them in the spring. Went to one of my favorite bank fishing spots at a reservoir lake, tried soft worms for thirty minutes and no bites. Didn't want to give up so finally put on for the first time a Roboworm. Three casts and caught a bass. Felt good working an area and not giving up and finally getting a bass. Since then I always carry Roboworms and they have kept working for me.
Swim Jig, Siebert
Rage Space Monkey was a new bait for me this year. I caught numbers and size pitching and even swimming it.
Well being Fairly new to bass fishing only bout two years this year I picked up ribbon tail worms and lipless crankbaits and I've caught a lot of good fish on them. Also I caught my first spinnerbait bass and top water bass this year and I'm starting to figure the bass out on my local 37 acre lake. I really look forward to next year and put what I've learned to the test to find the monsters in the lake. I've pitched jigs a bunch but no takers so hopefully next year I can pull the big girls with them. Tight lines!
Pop x/pop max
Biffle bug on hardhead jig
Ima roumba
KVD squarebill crankbaits;1/16 oz owner wacky jighead with zoom finesse worms, jackall flick shakes, senkos, yum dingers; 3/8 oz jigs with rage tail chunks, paca chunks, wacky rigged yum dingers or blackwater t floater worms; swimmin caffeine shad rigged on owner weighted cps hooks...that's what worked for me. There were a few more but that was the bulk of what I caught most of my fish on in 2014.
Spinnerbaits and trickworms killed it for me this year! Caught my biggest on a creature bait. Just happened to start raining and was messing around and tried it and BAM!!
Luckestrike Rc2 crankbait!
Strike King Rage Blade....definitely a big fish lure
Hildebrandt Okeechobee Special Spinnerbait...they love that oversized blade.
Red Eye Shad in a now discontinued color that shall remain nameless...
I caught the most big fish on 3/8 or 1/2 oz jigs with 4" Pit Boss trailers.
I caught the greatest numbers of fish on wacky-rigged 5" Senkos.
I had the most fun catching fish on ScumFrogs.
As far as specific hard baits, I did very well with the Bill Norman N and Big N in bull bream color, the Bill Lewis Rat-L-Trap in Chartruese Crawfish, and chatter baits.
Tight lines,
Bob
KVD Sexy Dawg
H20 Slush Daddy
Berkley Havoc Beat Shad, not as good as the Keitech, but more durable, easy to get and less expensive
Zman Finesse TRD
I like and fish Zoom plastics a lot and this year picked up a few bags of Magnum finesse worms. I can't say enough good things about that worm. Black was the best producer but Houdini was durn good in certain conditions.

X2 on that.
for me it would have to be the lunk3rhunt frog. My biggest fish was caught on it and it's the most fun. Now I am using lipless crank baits like the Strike King Red Eye Shad and they have produced some Giants for me and my buddies.
Buzz baits. Over the years I have fished them maybe once or twice a year, but only until I thought of another bait to use. This year I decided I was going to fish the bait correctly, and it paid off. Now I will be using them right along side my frog.
Not my best lures by any means but the Hudd Shad and Hudd Minnow do work .. no lunkers on them cause theyre a bit smaller but they catch
For me it was the summer of the gunfish. I didn't really want to plunk down the money for one but was able to find a few used for pretty cheap. Man are they the bomb. Got some of my most violent strike off them. Even if they miss the fish seem to come back and get it. Great bait.
Depps Crankbaits
Siebert Brush Jigs
Bladed Swimjigs
Arashi Squarebills

Agreed! No monsters in them yet and I'm still learning to use swimmers of that type but both are really cool for creeping along the bottom. Def a nice approach to have in weeded areas and low current rivers too!
I finally caught some fish on a swim jig. I've been fishing 3/8 and 1/2 ounce sizes and had yet to get a strike. I got some 3/0 hooks that I'd hoped would fit my shakyhead mold but turned out to be too thick. What they did fit nicely was my 1/4oz swim jig head, so I poured some and gave them a try. That light head with a twin tail grub produced good numbers of fish for me, especially around water willows.
Also had some good success with a Duo Realis popper 64.
I had success with a magnum trick worm with the tail dipped in JJ's Magic on a shaky head. I actually had luck with a lot of stuff that I dipped. It was my first year using JJ's Magic and I'm sold.
Zoom Trick Worm. Once I discovered them I had fun rigging them on a split shot and using them bank fishing and kayak fishing. Cheap and you get a lot of them in a bag.
New baits that performed well for me ....
Strike King Rage Structure bug - texas rig with a 3/8 or 1/2 oz tungsten weight has been catching quality fish
Heavy Grass jigs with a Rage Craw trailer - 1 to 1-1/2 oz , throwing in the grass or sandgrass off the main weed line for reaction bites. I like both the SK Hack Attack jig and Dirty Jigs No Jack Punchin' jigs. 50 lb braid & flipping stick
Weedless Huddleston Shad- great change of pace to swimming RI Skinny Dippers in the grass
Duo Realis Lipless crankbait - excels for rippin' retrieves
10" Big Bite Bait Kriet tail worms - bulkier than the Berkley power worms and seems to attract bigger bites
Eco Pro Tungsten buzzbaits - very loud and unique sound, hook is on the small side so I recommend that you add a trailer. Rediscovered buzz baits this year
Ima Roumba
PopMax
#1 - Powerbait 4" on a drop shot
#2 - Missile Fuse 4.4 on a Mojo
#3 - Yum Flash Mob Jr with small swimbaits (Zoom swimmin Fluke Jr's)
#4 - Cavitron Buzzbait
#5 - Sexy Dawg
Notable mention for the Strike King 1.5 Flat.
Rebel pop r's, rapala dt series (mainly the dt10), northstar southpaw jigs, and sieberts dredge series the whole series is great jigs.
There were two baits that were new to me this year that I absolutely whacked them on. Strike king 10xd and a Mattlures strong perch wakebait.
1. Missle bait Baby D-bomb green pumpkin red , 8-7, 7-12, 7-2, 6-12, 6-10, 6-10, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-2
(and green pumkin purple, superbug) also in just d-bomb color too.
3. roboworm hologram shad 6 inch and missle bait fuse 4.4
The worst
. Live target anything , 2 frogs crooked out of the box, 3 of their crankbaits broke in the same day.
