i heard amazing reviews on the keitech swing impact and bought a few packages. the tear very easily.
from what i read, these baits get bites when everything else fails.
when i used them, i found that they werent as effective as a senko or other soft stick bait.
i hooked them texas but they are so light they wont cast far. if i put them on a 1/4 oz jighead they would snag weeds very easily.
i only caught one nice bass and that was when it was on a jighead and just left it on the bottom for around a minute.
i am new to soft plastics so i am hoping to get pointers to increase my odds.
help on how to rig it and techniques in retrieval would be greatly appreciated.
I fish them on a 1/8 or 1/4oz worm nose jighead. Cast them out and start the retrieve when it's at the desired depth, just reel slowly. Very easy to fish and very effective. They can also work very well with a lift, drop retrieve or on a carolina rig.
Keitech swing Impacts are excellent baits. Fantastic design. I prefer the FAT swing impact, myself. I rig the 3.8" FATs on any variety of 3/0-1/8oz weighted swimbait hooks. I also like them as a swim jig or chatterbait trailer.
I've used them very successfully on 1/2 oz. jig heads for deep jigging lake trout.
My absolute most productive bait. I use a Eagle Claw Lazer Weighted Swimbait 60 Degree Hook 1/8 to 1/4. Use it like a jig. I let it settle on the bottom, shake it, hop it, drag it and swim it in, My favorites is the Swing Impact FAT 3,8 or 4.8 in Bluegill Flash. Totally weedless.
I use the little ones on Picasso School-E finesse rig, and I'll also drop shot them. The bigger ones get either dart head jig or I use a weed less swimbait hook like an Owner Beast. Don't use too big a hook though - the less hook in the bait, the better the action.
They're a lot of fun when the fish are in the mood to hit them. Use a little swimbait hook - the ones with the screw lock and a small weight embedded on the shaft - and you'll stay snag free and the bait will run true.
You could up the size of the bait, too - they make a fat version that casts a mile. I have my best luck just swimming them back slow. I love how the tail kicks just right no matter what the speed of your retrieve.
I throw the 4.8" fat on a 5/0 1/4 oz swimbait hook.
I also use them as a chatter bait trailer. Awesome bait.
You're paying too much... check out the Lunker City Ribster and/or the Swimming Ribster.

My primary use for them is as a swimjig trailer. However they are also pretty great nose hooked and fishing weightless. Swim them above grass in crystal clear water, you can slow the bait down significantly and it still swims. They look a lot like a tadpole they way their tail wags.
Problem is you can go through a pack in less than an hour if you are around lots of fish.

I second this, although use them on a few other umbrella rigs. Less hook, more action and dropshotting these are awsome. I would also look into some Mend-It to prolong the use of these as long as you have both pieces.

By comparison, the Swimmin Ribster is a fine alternative to the regular Swing Impacts.
I love these bait's as well. However, I like others use the FAT. I rig them 2 way mostly - a swimbait hook (Owner Weighted Twistlock or Owner Beast) - depends on the size bait I'm fishing or as a jig trailer.
I did just buy some similar style bait off TW and they will be there today when I get home so I will try them this weekend. Cause they sure are expensive.
VMC Half Moon jigs are my all time favorite ways to rig them. As stated already swim them slowly. When going weedless it's a 2/0 EWG with a 1/8oz bullet OR a Mojo rig.
I use the Buckeye Light Wire J-Will Swimbait Heads

Offensive Post DELETE this, totally out of line talking about my set up! You forgot the 14-16lb Fluoro part!
My Avitar is a 5.46 and 4.75 from a 20lb bag I got on this set up working weedlines.
Mend-It is an absolute must, I am going through 5-8 baits a tournament, but able to revive 80% of them once I get home and Mend them.
A drop of super glue on the nose adds greatly to the mileage I get with these. An 1/8 or lightest head I can get away with and slow rolled across the bottom 90% of the time. These are probably one of the most versatile baits I have on at all times. You can work the same places and ways you would a jig, swim jig, spinnerbait, crank etc.

Exactly.

What was this similar style bait that you purchased?
I grabbed Riot Baits Streaker Swimbait, Netbait BK Swimbait, and Reaction Innovations Little Dipper (more to use as a trailer since its only 3.5").
Take a look here and see there are many others. I want to try - Bass Assassin Boss Shiner, Kicker Fish Tail Slapper & Roboworm Robo Minnow (although the Robo is even more expensive than the Keitech) - next time!

Hmm...
Im gonna have to go ahead and respectfully disagree. Those other baits may be of similar design style, but the Keitech's swimming action while it is in the water, does set itself apart from all, or most others.
Kicker Fish is really close. Used them side by side and the tail action is identical, Keitech has more of the head wag. Kicker Fish is better for jigheads/ Swimjigs.

True, the kicker fish is close.

No worries, I am new to fishing (just started regularly fishing this year). Actually other than the Berkley Havoc I randomly picked up I have only used KI FAT. They were recommened to me by my brother in law and they worked for me so I stuck with them. I was running low so I decided to try some new baits and maybe it will be a mistake but you will never know what works for you without trying others.

Nah, trying new baits is never a mistake. Doing so, is the natural progression of learning.
I use this Charlie Brewer's Slider Heads - Spider Wide Gap Hooks
Theyre good but theyre not a miracle lure.. great action tho but even so sometimes fish dont want THAT
I fish it slow on a weighted belly screw hook
I took the swing impact fat out with me today and it got outfished side by side on two outfits by my spinnerbait
It did better alil better in summer..
I use the 3.8 & 4.8 and it has taken the place of my old favorites like the EZ Swimmer & Bass Pro Sassy Sally swimbaits (skinny dipper design but softer).
I love em as trailers on my bladed swim jigs, flipping jigs, spinnerbaits(smaller size for lift especially at night) and they are great on a texas rig pegged with a 1/4-3/8 oz wieght, heavier on the bigger models, and they are buoyant and rest on the bottom with a tail up action due to the ribs so I love to slowly swim, deadstick, shake, swim again....
Swimbaits can take awhile to get used to and gain confidence in as I used to always give up on them quickly and go to a fluke or worm, but once you get the right balance with hook and weight, you can cover alot of water with this bait and throw it anywhere if rigged weedless....
It works great under a punch skirt and every bit as good as a beaver or craw...Especially in the fall when Shad are heading up the creeks. I actually have alot of success with smaller swimbaits like the 3.8" using a modified c-rig by basically pegging a light 1/8-3/8 weight 12-18" in front of the bait and use a Gamakatsu split shot hook with weedguard and simply lip hook it like it was a live shiner. I just cast it out and do the lift and fall, or slowly reel,I have done well with this method in pressured situations and love the sight fish color I think its called.
The good news is alot of companies are making versions of the keitech although very few are cheaper, in fact most are more expensive. Bass Assassin has a good version but keitechs have the best feel and scent imo.
you know a bait is good when every company has copied it....bass pro speed shad, Kalin's Sizmic Shad,Assassin boss, Kicker Fish, Lunker City, Berkley....The Keitechs come in more sizes and have that slot for nail weights which is cool.
Anytime you see a bait copied by dozen's of companies like the Senko, Chatterbait, Swing Impact Minnow, skinny dipper, you know they are legit and good baits that should be in your box, and everyone fishes these baits in unique ways and has success which makes bass fishing so much fun...
These ribbed swimbaits are by far my favorite trailers at night for swim jigs and bladed swim jigs for bulk and vibration....that Tail gives off some crazy thump behind a quality bladed jig

Plenty of "boot-tailed" grubs were sold before this one...

Not sure why it'd take a while to gain confidence.. fish slam swimbaits .. couldnt imagine fishing without one somewhere within reach
Have you ever tried the 5.8 Impact Fat? Thinking about getting one and trying it out end of season.. I got the 3.8 but its too d**n small ..

What weight bladed jig you use?
Heck, it took the first page to see this thread is 2+ yrs old...
I throw mine on either a dirty jigs swimjig or a Matt Allen swimbait head.

Try the eco pro tungsten swing shad. They are very similar to the swing impact fats in swimming action, but I've found them to be more durable. Tackle warehouse has them. They are also half the price.

I suspect:
1. When members use the search function it searches all posts for information.
2. Information from Bass Resource comes up in web searches. It is how I found the site and became a member.
Hay we encourage people to use the search function and if it helps provide all the background so someone can ask a specific question then power to them. If it was not useful all history over a year old would be deleted.
I would recommend you use the owner beast hook on the 4.8. For some reason it makes the bait last several bass vise just one that I was getting using the regular twist-lock hook.
I'm with you Angry J. However, the guy who resurrected this asked a specific question to an earlier poster, and likelihood of an answer is diminished somewhat on older threads...however, in this case @primetime is still around often and will probably reply. I do like bringing up older threads when the conversation is CLEARLY relevant and consistent. Why have 17 different threads about recommended rods for medium diving crankbaits, when a consolidated discussion in one or two might serve as better source of info?
But, it is as it is and will always be on public forums....guys will get disapproving replies when resurrecting old threads.....and the next guy will get disparaging remarks about starting new thread about something discussed in last couple months...or years...I'm pretty impressed with the levelheadedness of most of the mods and old-timers here on BR....they treat most posts as if they bring valued questions...whether necro....or repetitive....(excepting those desert island "only two lures" silly ones, of course)
Often, older threads are archived, and not available to the search or sort function. With upgrades to forum software, we've been able to allow these functions to "look" further back, without a hit on performance.
There's a plethora of information in old threads, and we wanted to have the best access available to all, even if you don't have a link to the old thread, as is the case with the sticky lists of all time great threads.
Thanks a lot to bringing up old thread. I got 6 packs of keitech 4.8" laying around, gotta get them out to use again. I normally use with either 1/4 or 1/2 oz buckeye J-will swim jig head depend on how deep the water I fish or trailer for chatterbait.
i like when ppl using search function. Many time I see the same question post over and over again. Btw the search funtion here in the forum is pretty suck, I would get a better result to search from google and link back to this forum to get to the specific, Im looking for.
The biggest problem with the internal BR search engine is that it doesn't do three-letter words. Like jig, or ned...or rig, etc. You're right, JJ, using google with " bassresource.com: jig " in the search box will get you better results
You'll also get better results to, if you change the "This Topic" to "This Forum."
Why does it matter reading an old post full of questions and answers.
If I wasn't interested, I wouldn't open it.
I don't look at the date when a thread was started.
If it's title interests me or if I think I can add to the discussion and maybe help somebody out I'll open it, if not I move on.
Mike
Keel weighted, jig head, wrecking ball, and as a swim jig/chatterbait/spinner bait trailer, A-rig, etc.
They work on everything d**n near.
Just like any lure, there's no one set way to deliver a soft swimbait, the angler is the mystro.
In weedy natural lakes, I keep the swimbait just beneath the surface 90% of the time.
I'll deliberately cast the swimbait into heavy emergent cover, which bangs it around like a crankbait in a stump-field.
I've lost too many Keitechs to bowfin, and now only throw the Big EZ (same performance, better durability)
Roger
Just wondering, if anyone has fished these on a scrounger or not? I've been told the boot tail style baits will throw off the thump from the collar, is that true?

I'm sure it will work. I generally use a non action bait on a scrounger, since the head adds the wobble. But I don't see why it wouldn't work well with a action tail bait.
I really enjoyed this thread. I actually just purchased a few packages of the Kieltech Fat Impact baits with the idea of using them on a 3/8 oz underspin to use as a swimbait. After reading this post, I realized that if this plan don't work for me, I now have spinnerbait and swim jig trailers. Any other ideas on how to utilize these baits?
p.s: I also use the search function and bring up older threads when I can. Just like this thread, I might have missed this information if I would have started a new one.
The 3.8 and 4.8 are both really versatile and strong producers for me.. What I like most is that I can fit them as a trailer to almost anything from a football jig to a spinnerbait when the conditions dictate it. They haven't quite replaced grubs and tubes for me as numbers baits, but I tend to have one tied on in some fashion most days.
What I've found works
- swim jig trailer
- football jig trailer (especially in current, will often use a swinging rugby head for this as well)
- spinnerbait trailer (adds a TON to the profile and vibration On dark days/murkier water conditions)
- keel weighted hook (simplest, and most common rig for me)
- underspin ( when I want a more subtle flash - especially effective for slow, fluttering, jigging)
- weightless (very slow, lethargic presentations)
With these, I also like that the use of different skirts and jig head shapes doesn't tend to negatively effect the action much so long as it's hooked properly.
Excellent thread! I bought some Keitechs recently (3.8 and 4.8) and bought 4/0 and 5/0 weightless swimbait hooks for them.
Love the action on them, but yet to catch a fish. It's early still up here in New Hampshire, but I have a feeling any day now I'm going to see the awesome that these baits hold within them!
Also, I found this thread using Bing search for "ways to use a Keitech"
I prefer the action weightless on an Owner CPS Hook. If I do add weight I'll use the Chikubi Rig (Two tungsten nail weights inserted into the molded holes on the belly of the bait) it adds a little weight to get it a little deeper without ruining the weightless body wobble. If I do use a jig head (not often) I'll use a 3/32 Zappu Mustang Head. I have found that these heads still maintain the desirable body wobble.

I've been looking for a cheaper substitute but haven't been satisfied with anything else (yet). Do these Lunker City baits "undulate" as well as the Swing Impact? (The little Havoc Beat Shad has a similar action and I use them A LOT too but they are much smaller than when a bass wants a big meal).
