who makes the best hooks
Plenty of opinions for this question.
In my experience, Gamakatsu.
That's just my opinion....
Do you prefer the red or natural "bronze" color?

I prefer the nickel/black.
I've used red hooks, never impressed with them
and as they scratch, they lose the red coloring.
Different brands may have models that excel in a given application. What are you looking for?
Questions about "best" iare rarely informative.
Try to ask about specific use; who makes good hook for ________ fill in the blank application.
Tom
They're all good in they're own way. I love the mustad trebles. Owner Ewg hooks. Trokar flipping and drop shot hooks.
Gammys are the best I have come across for multiple technique. I have however started using VMC and although they are very good, not quite as sharp as games. However, for the price point I can't justify using gammys. Also, I usually break off before any hooks get dull.
That's like asking what company has the best peanut butter.
Gammy, trokar, mustad, all of them are awesome. Depends on what you are doing.

Peter Pan honey roast for me.
Both Mustad and Eagle Claw (Tokar) make good quality and average quality hooks. VMC has been making treble hooks for OEM lures for decades. Gamakatsu, Owner and Daiichi are high quality hook suppliers.
If I had to choose a premium hook maker today it would be Owner, but there isn't any reason to choose one, we have several excellent options to choose from.
Tom
do you buy vmc over gamakatsu?
I vote ALL OF THE ABOVE LISTED. Each has their own place and uses. I fish all of them. Just depends on the application.
Owner hooks . hands down best hook maker ...
their hooks cover all my needs -
- green wacky hooks -
- wide gap plus hooks -
- rig n hooks -
- ST 41 treble hooks -
- over size worm hooks -
- CPS flipping hook -
- beast hooks -
MUSTAD

I agree, owner are the most used for me though.
Owner with gami right behind them...
If I had to choose one manufacturer for all my hook needs it would 100 percent be Owner.
Easy question for me. The best hooks are the ones I find on sale.
Hootie
Jig hooks I like eagle claw, Gamakatsu for t-rigging and trebles I try and use what is laying around.
Owner for trebles, Eagle Claw for worm hooks, VMC for flipping hooks.
Owner, gamakatsu, and daichi are my go to brands but i also use a lot of eagle claw and vmc depending on what im usingthe hook for
Splitting hairs. I'm a gammy man for the most part. I only get picky when it comes to weighted swimbait hooks. Then it's either lake fork tackle or owner beast. To me for the most part a hook is a hook. Match your tackle as sharp is good
The jigs I pour are 95% Mustad, and a lot of that is price relative to Gamakatsu. I have every brand in my box, I really don't think you can buy a bad hook anymore.

What popped into my head was.....
That's like asking which young lady is the best at this brothel...most of them are very good.
I prefer jiff by the way.
. This is one of my weaknesses in life and that is why there is none in the house right now.On 11/14/2015 at 11:46 AM, rippin-lips said:Peter Pan honey roast for me.
I use Gamakatsu and Daiichi for fly tying. For bass, Owner hooks are great.
Jiff??? Peter pan????
Do yourself a favor and get some skippy. You'll never look back! Lol.
I like Owner and then Gamakatsu for soft plastics, a lot of my baits come with VMC ( Rapala, Storm & Blue Fox ) and those are also good.
No, I consider VMC to be good quality like Mustad at the price point, Gamakatsu and Owner are excellent quality however at a higher price point. On 11/14/2015 at 11:59 AM, shaggydog said:do you buy vmc over gamakatsu?

I used to use gammy ewg 4/0 but they were getting expensive then i found bps brand ewg hooks and they are way cheaper and i see no difference in them really. 25 for 7 bucks any body else try them?

Great minds think alike.
I prefer Gamakatsu
I like VMC pretty well.
I use alot of Moaner and Gama and Owner
Gamma
My last purchase of hooks were Gamakatsu, pretty happy with them.
If I had to pick one brand I'd say Eagle Claw (Trokar). I've had great luck with them, they're wicked sharp and they stay that way, and I've only rolled 1 point. That was when I got a flippin hook wedged in between rocks and was trying to break my 50 lb braid when it rolled and bent the hook out slightly. That's good enough for me.
A woman's hand. Good luck unhooking that vulcan death grip off your wallet .
This question is subjective and depends on personal preferences.With that said my favorite brands of hooks are the following;
1.Gamakatsu
2.Owner
3.Eagle Claw
4.Mustad
These brands make excellent hooks for both Saltwater and Freshwater fishing.
Gamakatsu for me.
Texas rigging a skinny worm like a 6 inch jelly worm I use the regular offset hooks of many brands. If its a little dull like the Eagle Claw Lazer Sharp I just touch it up with a diamond file and its ready to go . Fatter baits I use wider gap hooks . I like for the gap to be twice the thickness of the bait .
The problem with hooks is the same throughout the bass fishing industry: There are no standards.
So today I like the Gammies and tomorrow I go with Eagle Claws, both 2/0 worm hook sizes.
But I have no idea of the metal in the Gammies is better than that in the Eagle Claws or if the weight is the same for a 2/0 worm hook.
The type of hook also depends on the plastics you are throwing. There is a huge difference between hooks for Zoom 4-inch finesse worms and a Gary Yamamoto Flappen Hog. And there are differences between each type of hook in each category.
Not to be rude and please understand that I appreciate your question because I was in your shoes many years ago, but the best hook you can use is the one you have the most confidence for the type of bait and technique you are throwing.
And as you get older you will want a hook with a larger eye so you can tie the Palomar and other knots easier.
My more liked hooks are the following in this order:
And lately Cobra Heavy Cover Flippin Hooks have served me very well. Excellent price at TW on them and very well built from what I have seen. But only have used them a month or two.
Owner. Then Peter Pan creamy.
Gammys are best (sharpest) IME
Gammies are my go to worm hook for 99% of my applications. I like VMC for replacement trebles on my hard baits. Owner and Mustad are great quility, just not my cup of tea. Now in salt water, Mustad all day long...
I'm an Owner fan. I use a lot of their hooks and I have never been disappointed. There are many good brands out there. Mustad Ultra Points, Trokar, Gami, VMC, and many more.
I'm a fan of vmc and gamakatsu hooks
Trokar is my favorite straight shank flipping hook, gammy is my favorite EWG hook and favorite wacky worm hook, Owner is my favorite swim bait hook, and VMC is my favorite drop shot hook.
