What's The Most $$$ Lure You've Lost On A Bass 2024

fishing user avatarHuntrava reply :

This story is awful.

Earlier tonight, while I was distracted, a bass took a partially tied spinnerbait OFF of my line while it was tangling in the water.  I was in the middle of changing lures and didn't have a chance to tighten the knot.  Once the two of us realized what was happening, he started fighting, and I grabbed the rod and tried to pull him in.  No luck, he's now wearing a spinnerbait.

I feel kinda bad for him (a spinnerbait in your mouth has to be super annoying) and I also feel bad for myself, because I'm out $5.  Anyone have any comparable stories??  Any fish out there wearing some of your bling?

Quite a few times through my life...  what makes me more sick is the amount of lures/rigs i've lost in one outing.  Being a bank fisherman, I don't always have the luxury of going out and getting a stuck lure, and even when I feel like taking a swim, I can't always find them.  Sometimes they're already broke off and other times they are too deep for my comfort.

But to stick with the topic, I suppose around $30, a bbz1.  Fishing braid and hooked up while fishing a dam, bass swam straight to an opening in the dam, line rubbed on the rough concrete and got cut.  I was more ticked at losing the fish, I knew it was a good one.

fishing user avatarSurpriser reply :

Lost a few $20+ BBZ-1 swimbaits. It happened only when my line would fray after catching a fish and having its teeth chew up the line. And I would be in a school that was fired up, so I didn't think to check the line after catching 4 or 5 fish in a row. I'd cast out, line would immediately snap, and the lure would fly so far I could never find it again in open water.

Matter of fact, had one fish break the line with a big swimbait in its mouth, go underwater and reappear seconds later, jump and throw the lure, then the floating lure was eaten by another bass before I could chase it down and retrieve it.

I learned my lesson and regularly check my line for nicks now.

I casted off a megabass vision once

But what hurts the most is the year long total

ive lost probably 20tungsten bullets, a half dozen 6xds, an a-rig, a few squarebills and handfull of jigs this year

I've lost a few Lucky Craft Pointer 100s due to toothy critters, yep, fished a Rattlin' Rogue for 2 hours and was catching good smallies and the bite tapered off. So after 40 minutes without a hit I decided to go with the Pointer, it is a different look that often works and it did work, I caught one smallmouth and the next cast I hook into a Musky that was well over 40", of course it cut me off and the worse thing about that is an hour later the exact same thing happened again. That was the worst though, I've lost 4 Pointers to Muskies but 2 in one day was it, 30 bucks plus the gas for the truck and boat and it cost me over $100 for 1 day on the water.

fishing user avatarRaul reply :

You feel bad for loosing 5 miserable bucks in a spinnerbait ? :dazed-7:

Hell, I loose 4 dollars in one jig maybe 8-10 times a day in which more than half only lasted one cast.

fishing user avatardeep reply :

Broke off a Morning Wood rat on a bass on a hookset. Recovered it the next day. Lost a bunch of hudds, and one Strongbass, but snags claimed them, not my green friends.

You break that many bass off!!! Just pulling your line, those trees are jungle where you fish.

Who would tie half a knot and not finish tying it? Sounds like a fish story to me.

Loosing lures to bass doesn't happen often, loosing lures to snags is a different issue, we all do that. I have lost jigs to back to back to back cast before learning to change jig type or weight....Oh was I ever happy.

Lost my favorite wooden Huddleston to a big striped bass when it ran into a steel buoy line cable...dam stripers!

Broke off a giant bass on another boats anchor rope and had another giant bass break off when it ran over a rocky point, both of the bass may have been over 20 lbs. and still haunt me.

$40 lunker punker .. last year .. last thing I saw was a series of big splashes, a hookset, swimbait rod going parabolic, something big tangling itself into the weeds, 40# braid breaking off

not sure what hurt more losing the lure or the fish or said lure dangling in the mouth of said fish or all of the above

immediately upgraded from 40# to to 65# braid the next week for the heavy setup..

fishing user avatarflyfisher reply :

I haven't bought any high dollar swim baits or anything like that so the tops for me were some pricey jerk baits i bought to try out.  Stupid pickerel sawed them right off...oh well.  Now if we are talking about gear lost that is a different story......

The most expensive lure I have lost a bass on was a spro little John, about $12. I lost a spro bbz1 once not on a fish but I made a bad cast and got a small backlash, line broke bbz1 went flying. Unfortunately is was a slow sink if it wouldve been a floater I could've retrieved it:(

fishing user avatareverythingthatswims reply :

I lost a BBZ-1 yesterday being an idiot (not a bass), I cast parallel to the bank, and my line went over a tree branch, so I went to swing the bait back over the tree branch and my line got chafed and popped, water was very deep next to the bank and it was a slow sinking bait. Went back later and managed to ruin my 6' cast net  trying to retrieve it, I didn't know the bottom there was full of snags... Gotta pay to play! The way I see it, losing a swimbait or two in a year is the same as losing a few jigs, spinnerbaits, cranks, etc. every so often, swimbaits just seem worse because the $$$ leaves all at once!

fishing user avatarrippin-lips reply :

I'm prepared to lose $10-20 each time I go out. Sometimes you lose nothing and sometimes you lose a good bit. It's nothing to lose a few tungsten weights and hooks plus go through a 1/2 to full pack of rage craws in one outing. That's $10-12 easy. It's all part of the game.

fishing user avatargeo g reply :

Over the years I have lost a bunch of spinnerbaits, expensive frogs, and loads of top water baits.  But the most expensive was a big swimbait.  Down here we have loads of weeds and narly stuff in our shallow waters.  I now use 65 pound braid with the real expensive stuff. :Idontknow:

^^ Agreed. One day I went out fished for 8 hrs and lost $55 worth of lures. That hurt:(
fishing user avatarPreytorien reply :

I don't use nearly as expensive of lures as most guys on here. Then again, I don't often use cranks or swimbaits, so that takes a big portion of the expensive lure market out of the running.

My most expensive though was a couple weeks ago, I bought a Spinbait 80.....did pretty well with it in a very clear pond near my house, caught a few 3lb-ers then a few casts later it simply broke off the line and went *ploop* in the water about 40 feet offshore. I think it broke at the knot, it was heartbreaking.

I'll probably order another one this winter, i'm not a cranking fan so I can handle the wait.

fishing user avatarBassun reply :

I've never lost anything in the high end range like some of you guys have.  But, I am like most of you in that I don't buy lures to collect - I buy them to use and ultimately expect them to be lost, broken, etc. so I don't get too upset most of the time when I or a partner loses one.  Besides, if you are pounding banks you often find a few lures during the day to kind of make up for the few you lose if you keep your eyes open.  Especially if you are fishing a cove next to a road...

Interestingly though, I have found that while putting a big fish on deck makes for a good story, I often remember the ones that got away better.  Losing the cheap red-fin and monster striper I hooked into and faught for about 15 mins, (and even had him beside the boat once).  Or the wiggle wart lost to what I believe was a flathead that dove strait down, because I spun my drag the wrong way and locked it down.

The worst though, was a little Rogue jerkbait lost to about a 10" bass (yes, inch not pound).  We had been fishing for a few hours and had no luck.  We've all been there, threw everything blah blah blah.  Well, finally I tied on an old Rogue and bam!  Fish on.  A few casts later, another fish.  Bad thing, is that was the only one one the boat between both of us.  He tried a few other jerkbaits, but this old Rogue was the only thing getting hit.

We started down an arm of the cove we were fishing where I have usually had good success in spring and fall.  At the mouth there is a long point on one side and a big lay down on the other - I pushed the boat out to split the shores.  I shot the Rogue out over the point, while my partner was working the laydown.  Twitch, twich, thump - and I set the hook.  Well, apparently I had nicked my line - as when I set the hook I broke off the fish.  I was aggrivated since I had finally started catching fish, and lost the one thing that worked.

Then, it happened.  A little bass jumps up about 10 feet from the boat, with my lure hanging out of his mouth right in front of me.  I was like, "you will never believe this" to my partner.  Then no more than maybe 15 seconds later, he did it again.  This time, my partner saw it and found it much more funny than I.  We continued down the small arm of the cove, catching nothing, but being heckled by this fish the whole way.

He started at the mouth of the cove, and while obviously coincendentially, followed us about 100 yards to the back of the cove jumping up every few mins or so.  Sure, it wasn't an expensive lure - but it was the only one we caught fish on that day - which made it priceless.  And as if losing it wasn't enough, that little bass harassed us the whole way back in that arm trying to throw the lure.  While aggrivating at first, it ended up being funny by the time we left the cove.  And, at least I know I had a good hook set...

fishing user avatarChoporoz reply :

No pricey swimbait loss stories, but a few months ago on the first day that I was trying out an A-rig, I hung it up in rocks.  $13 for the rig and another $14 for the heads and tails. Funny....I haven't tossed one since

fishing user avatarSPEEDBEAD. reply :

Luckily, I've never lost anything more expensive than a 8" Hudd and that's only because I was fishing from shore. I carry two plug knockers on the boat and I'll spend as much time as necessary getting my swimmers back.

Last week I almost had my first Deps 250 casualty. I was wading a river for muskies, got bit and it tossed the hook. Without thinking, I tried launching the bait without checking my line....SNAP! Happy to say I was aiming back toward the bank into about 2.5 FOW so I waded over and fished it off the bottom with my rod tip. I got a little puckered there for a minute.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

For some guys, losing expensive baits is some weird badge of honor that they see fit to brag about.  I prefer bragging about what I caught on expensive baits, lol.

fishing user avatarSenko lover reply :

Unfortunately, losing lures is an essential part of fishing correctly. I used to lose sleep over lures I lost, but now I accept it and realize that you're not using a lure to it's full potential if you don't risk snagging it.

That said, I was kicking myself when I lost my $8.00 X-Rap last week. :X

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

A couple of years ago my Dad was fishing a shallow runner on mono line.  He hung up about 10' from the bank and broke the line, but he could see the bait under the water. He tried unsuccessfully to snag the first bait with a second bait, which broke off too.  Then a third, fourth, and fifth bait.  When we left there were 5 baits out in the water all tangled together with their hooks buried in a tree limb.

The sad part was a couple of weeks later the water level had dropped enough to where we could walk out to the snag, but the baits were gone.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

I lost a Lucky Craft Slender Pointer 97MR in Gunmetal Shad on a big smallmouth once. Line stretched tight and all she did was nick a zebra mussel on a rock and it was all over.

fishing user avatarFelixone reply :

Knock on wood or whatever, but so far I haven't lost too much.  Mostly I have lost hooks and worms since I am only recently really trying to learn hard baits (I am a new angler).  The funniest so far, at least for me, was just this past weekend.  I typically fish from a kayak.  I was in about 6 feet of water when I was trying to change out lures.  I had pulled out the one I was going to switch to and set it on the side of my kayak.  I cut the old lure off, and reached to grab the new one.  Unfortunately, I wasn't really paying attention and lightly stuck my finger with one of the hooks.  As I snatched my hand away the lure swung out over the side of the kayak and released from my finger.  I couldn't do anything beyond sit there and watch as it sank to the bottom out of sight.

The dumbest one is related in that I have a bad problem of setting lures in the channel around the cockpit of my kayak.  One the day in question I got skunked, and wasn't in the best mood when I left the water.  I had stayed later than intended in hopes of catching anything so I was rushing when I was loading up my gear.  I picked the kayak up to load it on my car.  I heard something slide, but didn't think too much about it until later that night.  As I was sorting out the tackle I had used that day and getting everything back in order I noticed I was missing a couple lures.  It wasn't until that moment that I realized what I had done.  I had only cleared the lures off one side of the kayak, and dropped the rest when I picked the kayak up.  This actually broke my heart for a while as I thought I had lost a very old popper that I inherited from my father.  I searched all of my boxes, but didn't see it anywhere.  It was definitely a lesson in what others in here have said.  If you don't want to lose it don't throw it.  Fortunately, this had a happy ending.  The next time I went out I was digging in a box looking for something to use when I found the popper.  I have no idea how it got in there, or how I didn't see it when I looked the first time.  The last time I remember seeing it was when I set it on the side of the kayak.  Now I am torn.  Part of me thinks this is a lucky lure and needs to be used.  The other side of me reminds myself how upset I was when I thought I lost it and how happy I was to find it.  I still haven't used it again, but it does come with me each time I go out.

fishing user avatarbigbill reply :

Well I was in a rush to fish one day. I just lost my self control. I had just purchased five new lures. Besides my favorites that are my old faithful ones that work every time I throw it. You know where this is going right?

Let's factor in some uplifting wind coming in from the water towards the man-made road bed that's 4' above the water. Add some over head trees with low branches.

I lost three new lures and two old faithful ones before I packed it in and headed home. I hardly ever lose anything in the course of a season. I've lost the topnockers to big bass but that's maybe three in ten++ years. oops the rapala I lost to the lure theft. At day break in this one spot it's so violent of a strike it rips off my lure every time. It loves the rapala minnow f7 in blue.

fishing user avatarthomas15 reply :

I have lost a few $4.00 crank baits but not many. That's all. In general I try to be careful and will spend quite a bit of time trying to recover an out of control lure.

I have decided that this year I'm going to take many more risks in the hope that I will become a better angler and catch more fish. One thing I did recently was take several of my lures out of my tackle boxes and put them in the china closet. On display. This way there is no possibility of losing them. One of them is a original Daredevil Spoon I have had since I was 7 years old (I'm 57 now) and another notable is a Wal-Mart FLW crankbait that I used to catch my first LM. I have caught quite a few bass and chain pickrell with that lure and replaced the trebles at least once. It has been snagged several times and recovered but I would really feel bad if I lost that one at this point. I've had it about 20 years now, I think it cost $2.99. I always considered it my good luck lure. The most expensive lure that I actually paid money for are a few $12.00 soft body frogs. Most of my lures are sub $5.00 tackle.

Midway through last summer marked my return to any kind of fishing after a 11 year layoff. I feel both like an old salt and a beginner all in one. I have a boat now, more time to fish and the desire to really get down to the nub. All of my past bass fishing was from a bank, now with a boat it's all new. I did sometimes use a bait caster in the past but now I want to do 90% of my fishing with a bait caster. And really make a study of bass fishing.

fishing user avatarDogmatic reply :

I always carry a folding saw, goggles/snorkel, and 2 lure retrievers, on what I spend on some baits, I can't afford to lose them if they're retrievable. That being said, last season I started experimenting with umbrella rigs. Being primarily a swimbait fisherman, I'm aware of the "go big, or go home" philosophy, and saw some videos, which lead me to putting larger and larger swimbaits on my rigs. Starting with Spro bbz1's and tru tungsten 4", with moderate success, I continued to go bigger, Mattlures U2 and Ultimate gills, 6" Bull shads, 6" Hudds, even tried 8" Hudds(but I snapped that rig off a few times, recovered them though). With the forage in my home lake, I started working with Baitsmith Shads that I scored a deal on. Well, as mentioned many times in the other thread "I know I should, but often forget...", you really need to check your line, knots, and re-tie often, and always check your drag, but I dont, which led me to lose this rig on a nice Striper jumping at the side of my boat. Took the rig($15) and three Baitsmith Shads($25 ea.), problem is, those baits are nearly impossible to replace now, especially at that price. Live and learn.
